When Malibu launched its “Get Ready With Malibu Pink” campaign this spring, the rum brand had all the necessary ingredients for a modern influencer campaign. Creator partnerships with Sabrina Brier and other influencers, on-trend “get ready with me” style videos, all centered on the debut of a new flavored rum with guava, coconut, and pineapple. But there was also one element that was surprisingly new terrain for Malibu’s parent company Pernod Ricard: its first major campaign designed specifically for TikTok. A platform once off-limits Until very recently, alcohol brands like Malibu were completely absent from TikTok. But over the past two years, TikTok’s stron…

Let me tell you my trick for remembering the names of people I meet: I don’t. It’s not for lack of caring. It’s just that my stupid brain seems to only excel at remembering trivial things, like my family’s exact food orders at a random restaurant we went to in 2023. That same brain is largely worthless at matching names to faces, especially when it’s been a while. So a couple years ago, I swallowed my pride and started maintaining a “People” note on my phone, which is basically just a list of folks I’ve met with some basic descriptions to help me remember them. It’s not fancy, but it’s already spared me from potential embarrassment on several occasions. This s…

Oprah Winfrey’s podcast is headed to Amazon. Winfrey’s production company, Harpo Entertainment, struck a multiyear deal to give Amazon-owned Wondery exclusive distributing and advertising rights to “The Oprah Podcast,” the companies announced Monday. Under the agreement, Winfrey’s podcast will expand to two new episodes a week starting this summer — and Wondery will distribute the show’s audio and video across Amazon platforms. Under the deal, Amazon has also obtained rights to the library of the widely-watched “The Oprah Winfrey Show” — which ran from 1986 to 2011 — as well as the talk show host’s book club and “Favorite Things” franchises. No financial terms of the a…

Whataburger, the Texas fast food chain known for its made-to-order burger, is continuing its planned expansion across the U.S. The “hometown burger place that hasn’t compromised” will open 15 new restaurants by the end of June, according to what the brand recently told USA Today. The chain first announced it would be growing in 2020, after being acquired by BDT Capital Partners the previous year. Shortly thereafter, the fast food joint began launching new locations in new states. It focused its growth most aggressively in Southern states like Tennessee, Missouri, and Florida. At the time, the company said in a press release, that the chain isn’t just growing, but al…

As summer approaches, cities across the United States, Mexico, and Canada are readying to host the highly awaited 2026 FIFA World Cup kickoff. But with exorbitant prices and disruptions ahead, local officials are battling to tame discontent as fans try to keep their eye on the ball. On Monday, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that New York City, which is serving as a cohost to a series of World Cup soccer matches with New Jersey, will host free fan zones across the five boroughs. The free programming aims to offset the high ticket prices that may gatekeep fans from attending the event. For instance, some tickets to the final m…

After Meta announced it would lay off 10% of its workforce next month to offset AI spending, employees swarmed to Blind—an anonymous online workplace forum—to get a few things off their chests. According to a report by Blind provided to Fast Company, posts containing negative sentiment about AI at Meta have grown to 83% since late 2025—that’s a roughly 300% jump since 2024, when just 20% of posts on the site about AI at Meta were negative. “Meta is dead and depressing,” one post on the platform said after the company’s layoff announcements. Cynicism around AI and workplace culture at Meta is pervasive on the platform. “They do not care about the employees any…

Taylor Swift recently filed a series of trademark applications designed to protect the star from AI-enabled impersonations. Swift already holds a wide array of trademarks, but these latest filings, at least one intellectual property firm suggests, serve a new purpose: protecting the timbre and character of her voice itself through what is known as a “sound mark.” In two recent filings, posted April 24 by Swift’s company, the celebrity applied to trademark two recordings. In one, she says, “Hey, it’s Taylor,” and in the other, “Hey, it’s Taylor Swift.” The recordings themselves are not particularly novel, but that is likely beside the point. “The concept of protect…

Passengers flying with low battery on their phones might be out of luck—at least if they are flying American Airlines. The country’s largest airline is implementing a new policy that will restrict how many portable chargers passengers may bring to the aircraft, citing potential safety concerns from lithium batteries. “We know our customers rely on portable chargers to keep devices powered throughout their journey,” the carrier told CBS. “To support safety on board while ensuring our customers continue to have the ability to charge when on the go, American is requiring customers to keep these devices easily accessible during flight.” The new policy goes into ef…

Using AI in the workplace promises significant productivity gains. And using chatbots may make you feel productive, because it they designed to create engagement from users. But, you need to be more explicit about calculating the costs (and opportunity costs) and tangible benefits to your work. That will help you determine whether the AI juice is worth the LLM squeeze. Here are three key considerations. 1. Calculate your time spent using AI When people first started analyzing the downside of smart phones, one of the big data points that got trotted out was how long someone would remain off-task once they picked up their phone. Because apps on your phone are so …

One of the hardest parts of being a homeowner is knowing whom to call when something goes wrong with your house—a process that starts with figuring out what’s actually wrong in the first place. “What if you wake up, you’ve got a wet spot on the ceiling, and you’re like, Oh crap, I’ve got a problem, but I don’t actually know what it is or who to hire?” says Marco Zappacosta, cofounder and CEO of the home-services marketplace Thumbtack. The 18-year-old platform has made a robust business of helping homeowners navigate the sometimes bewildering process of home improvements and repairs by connecting them with all sorts of service pros—handymen, roofers, electricians…

Want more housing market stories from Lance Lambert’s ResiClub in your inbox? Subscribe to the ResiClub newsletter. During the Pandemic Housing Boom, many publicly traded homebuilders achieved record profit margins as home prices soared and homebuyer demand ran red hot. Once the national housing demand boom fizzled out in the summer of 2022, many large homebuilders compressed their margins in order to do affordability adjustments where and when needed to maintain their sales pace. That includes giant homebuilder PulteGroup, which reported on Thursday that it compressed its Q1 2026 gross margin to 24.4%, compared with 27.5% in Q1 2025 and 24.7% in Q4 2025. While th…

Welcome to AI Decoded, Fast Company’s weekly newsletter that breaks down the most important news in the world of AI. You can sign up to receive this newsletter every week via email here. Are the biggest AI labs betting on the wrong horse? Big AI companies are betting nearly all of their R&D and capital expenditure on the idea that pre-trained transformer models can deliver AI with human-level general intelligence. This approach relies heavily on backpropagation, the standard algorithm used to train deep neural networks. Ben Goertzel, who coined the term “AGI” with his 2005 book Artificial General Intelligence (co-written with DeepMind founder Shane Legg), i…

Emma Grede is the powerhouse entrepreneur behind size-inclusive fashion brand Good American and shapewear line Skims—some of the Kardashian family’s most successful business ventures. (Grede co-founded the brands with Khloé and Kim, respectively.) In a recent Bloomberg podcast, Grede shared her staunch take on the pitfalls of remote work. “Working from home is career suicide,” Grede said. “We only talk about the upside of working from home.” Not only does she believe the workplace perk is “career suicide,” but she sees the damage of remote work having wider, lasting societal implications. “Think about what’s happening in the world,” Grede said. “Declining bir…

With gas prices, energy bills, and grocery costs all rising, the affordability crisis is top of mind for most workers. But you can’t talk about that crisis without also talking about extreme wealth inequality, says Patricia Stottlemyer, policy lead for labor rights at Oxfam America. And just as affordability has worsened recently, so has the gap between regular workers and the rich, including company CEOs. In 2025, for example, the top 1,500 CEOs of the world’s largest corporations saw an 11% real-terms pay raise. The average global worker, on the other hand, saw their real wages increase by only 0.5%. That means those CEOs saw their pay increase 20 time…

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a Salmonella outbreak in more than a dozen states. Worse, the outbreak appears to be linked to a strain of the bacterium that may be resistant to antibiotics. Here’s what you need to know about the source of the outbreak, where its occuring, and what you can do about it. What’s happened? On April 23, the CDC posted an update regarding its ongoing investigation into a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections. The outbreak is believed to be linked to backyard poultry, such as ducks and chickens. The first reported infection linked to the outbreak is believed to have occurred on February 2…

Some of the most familiar moments in a day begin with something simple like boiling water. The first cup before the day starts, a pause in the middle of it, a quiet reset at the end. These moments are easy to overlook because they are routine, but they are also where design shows up most clearly. Not just in how something looks, but in how it behaves when it is used again and again. A kettle is a good example. It is a familiar object, one that has existed in roughly the same form for generations. It is not a category most people would describe as needing innovation. And yet, the experience is often defined by small, persistent points of friction. Handles that feel un…

For those who don’t remember what life on the internet looked like in 2023, here’s a refresher: girl dinner, the Roman Empire, and a TikTok algorithm painted purple from the McDonald’s Grimace Shake. The trend was simple, albeit strange: a user would film themselves trying out the purple McDonald’s beverage and then immediately cut to a horror-movie scene of their own faked death. The purple vanilla-berry-flavored milkshake was rolled out by the fast food chain in June of that year as a limited-edition menu item in honor of one of the chain’s mascots, Grimace. While the fake death trend garnered over 2.9 billion views on TikTok, and reportedly boosted sales by…

Anil Menon might have the world’s spaciest resume. After several years as a NASA flight surgeon, he became SpaceX’s medical director in 2018, where he authored research on the effects of space on the human body. In 2021, he was selected as a NASA astronaut and has spent the past several years training for his own journey to space. Along the way, he also supported his wife, Anna Menon, who traveled to space on a private mission in 2024 and was herself selected as a NASA astronaut last year. Somewhere in the margins, Menon has also served as an Air Force Reserve member and emergency room doctor. Now, he’s finally heading to space himself. This July, Menon will trave…

There is a troubling contradiction at the heart of the global transition to a cleaner, greener, tech-driven future: Modern technologies—everything from AI to wind turbines, as well as cellphones, electric vehicles and defense systems—depend on critical minerals. But many of the communities where those minerals are mined end up with polluted water and poorer health because of the mining. Lithium powers batteries. Cobalt stabilizes them. Copper carries electricity. Rare earth elements make wind turbines and digital devices efficient and durable. Each of these are essential to the technologies of the fourth industrial revolution, but they are also toxic and require enorm…

Most founders believe their job is to stay deeply involved as their company grows. But that instinct often becomes the very thing that holds the business back. As companies scale, what once made them successful—founder-led decision-making, strong creative direction, tight control—can start to create bottlenecks. Teams can’t become truly autonomous, leadership layers struggle to emerge and the organization remains tied to the founder’s perspective instead of evolving beyond it. I saw this firsthand after a decade of building Kurppa Hosk with business partner Thomas Kurppa. Nothing was broken; we had become a globally renowned creative agency. But growth was becomi…

If you’re still copy-pasting the same formatting requests or resorting to “write this like a professional” prompts every single time you open ChatGPT, you’re working too hard. There’s an essential feature buried in the Settings menu called Custom Instructions. In short, it lets you set permanent preferences so you don’t repeat prompts. Think of it as a set of persistent filters. Instead of reminding ChatGPT that you hate long-winded intros or that you need everything delivered in a clean table, you tell it once and it remembers forever. Setting it up is a breeze: Click your profile name or icon in the bottom-left corner and choose Personalization. You’ll notic…
