For the past two years, I’ve had a front-row seat to one of the largest and most rigorous datasets in global design. Each year, the iF DESIGN AWARD receives over 10,000 submissions spanning 93 categories of design. Participants include industry giants like Apple and Coca-Cola, to startups and independent design studios that are actively shaping the field’s future. Taken together, these entries offer more than a snapshot of excellence. They reveal where design is actually headed. What emerges from recent winners is a growing shift: In many categories, sustainability is no longer a differentiator, it’s the baseline for great design. The most compelling work today goes even further, embedding sustainability into the logic of how projects are imagined, produced, and scaled. It shows up across industries, not only in expected areas like automotive, packaging, or architecture, and is increasingly the result of collaborative, cross-disciplinary teamwork. Sustainable design is maturing. Increasingly, it is structural, systemic, and embedded. There is still a long way to go, but this shift carries real implications for how consumers and the industry should be defining what design excellence means. THE MATURATION SIGNAL When I look at the projects that were awarded by iF in 2026, I see sustainability’s growing ubiquity. Part of this is because participants now know that 20% of their overall score is based on social and environmental considerations. But part of it is because the design world broadly recognizes that good design is also good for people, planet, and business. The Grand Ring—the unifying architectural structure of Expo 2025 Osaka—is a striking example. Spanning the entire exposition grounds, it’s an enormous undertaking that could easily have been treated as a temporary structure with a short lifespan and little afterthought. Winning designs today have sustainability embedded into the product logic in such a way that it almost becomes invisible. The user simply gets something that works better and lasts longer. THE COLLABORATION SIGNAL The third pattern looks at the teams behind the designs. Most of the standout work over the past couple of years since sustainability became the fifth equal jurying criteria in the iF award program, isn’t the output of a single visionary designer. It comes from interdisciplinary and often cross-organizational teams. Harvard’s ChoLab is a useful illustration. This device enables rapid, on-site cholera testing in vulnerable communities, putting water safety diagnostics directly in the hands of community health workers rather than waiting on slow, costly, long-distance laboratory infrastructure. Why a Murdoch buying Vox and New York Magazine might not be like a bad episode of ‘Succession’
The sale of a marquee digital media company on Succession, the HBO series that ran from 2018-2023 , was always going to end badly. When Kendall Roy, heir-apparent to a fictional media conglomerate, bursts into the offices of his newly acquired hot media startup Vaulter, dripping with billionaire confidence, it doesn’t take a degree in dramaturgy to guess where this is going. The moment the Roy family finds out Vaulter may not turn a profit quite as quickly as expected, they shut it down and strip it for parts. Considering the Roy family is primarily, almost explicitly based on the Murdoch family of News Corporation infamy, it’s hard not to see the glint of the grim reaper’s scythe in the news that James Murdoch has just purchased half of Vox Media, including all of New York Magazine. It certainly looks like a case of life imitating art that itself was imitating life. But reading the tea leaves of reality is more complicated than predicting the end of arcs on Succession, and early signs suggest doomsayers of the Murdoch deal may be in for a plot twist. James Murdoch is (mostly) not Kendall Roy Before delving into the details of the deal itself, it’s important to get a sense of James Murdoch—the person behind the notorious family name. Much like Kendall and Roman Roy, the Succession siblings played by Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin respectively, James and Lachlan Murdoch had long been vying to one day take over their father Rupert Murdoch’s media empire. True to Kendall-form, James is less dyed-in-the-wool than his father and brother, advocating against climate denial as early as 2009, and he was also more interested in new media landscapes. He served as CEO of 21st Century Fox from 2015 until its sale to Disney in 2019, at which point he broke off from the Murdoch operation to found his own private investment and holding company, Lupa Systems. Meanwhile, his brother eventually took control of the remaining Fox Corporation assets from his father in 2025, conclusively ending the long-simmering succession drama—and cementing James’ reputation as “the good Murdoch.” Vox and New York Magazine are not Vaulter While it might have seemed farfetched a decade ago for a Murdoch scion to purchase the liberal-leaning Vox Media and New York Magazine for anything other than nefarious or mercenary reasons, James Murdoch’s trajectory of late suggests a sharper strategic focus. Over the last 15 years, it’s become ever more obvious that digital advertising and search engine referrals are no longer viable means of keeping media companies afloat—let alone scaling them. By now, every investment firm should understand that buying up a hot, many-tentacled media property and trying to cost-cut a path to profits only results in Zombie Deadspin. That’s not to say it will never happen again, just that it would be quite a choice for someone with the background and aspirations of James Murdoch in Luke Skywalker mode. What seems more likely is that Murdoch and the Lupa Systems team recognize that Vox Media Network’s personality-driven podcasts, including On with Kara Swisher, and the hip, conversation-driving verticals of New York Magazine represent the kind of deep and personal consumer connection whose value in the current media landscape goes far beyond clicks. Making growth-at-all-costs moves that would mess with the cultural potency of these elite brands would be like lighting a dump truck full of money on fire. (Lupa Systems reportedly spent over $300 million on this deal.) One could be forgiven for assuming the worst, though. Acquisitions of trusted media brands have not had a stellar track record lately, even apart from the private equity-assisted downfalls of years past. Skydance’s acquisition of Paramount, for instance, quickly led to a predictable layoff bloodbath, not to mention an ideological overhaul of CBS News that seems to have alienated its old audience without bringing in a new one. Given the Murdoch of it all, the Vox deal reads on paper like a chance for Fox News to execute a finishing move on a magazine whose namesake is synonymous with East Coast snobbery. These Google Search Alternatives Actually Let You Control Your AI Experience
It's no secret that Google, like most big tech companies, has gone all-in on AI. The company believes it is the future, and, as such, has injected the technology into every one of its products, none more visibly than Google Search. Over the past two years, Google has introduced AI summaries that seek to answer your questions, pulling the information from websites that fewer and fewer users are actually visiting and reading for themselves. Given this trend, it should hardly come as a surprise that during I/O 2026, Google announced "a new era for AI Search." This "era" essentially marks an expansion of its investment in AI in Search: In addition to rolling out its new Gemini 3.5 Flash model to Search, Google is making it even easier to use its AI-generated results (or, perhaps, harder to avoid them). You can now expand an AI Overview to continue the conversation in AI Mode, and keep receiving answers without engaging with any primary sources yourself. Google will also soon offer select users access to Search "agents," which can take actions on your behalf on the web. Google's goal is to make Search synonymous with AI, which will no doubt please Google's investors, but will also alienate some users. Many of still search Google seeking good results for our queries, and not AI-generated summaries and chats. Personally, I'm not interested in "continuing the conversation" with Google's AI: I want to find relevant websites to read and explore. As such, I went looking for Google Search alternatives that either don't use AI, or let you disable all AI features entirely. Here are five of your best options. Kagi Credit: Lifehacker Kagi is a favorite among tech fans who want more control over their search experience. It includes perks like ad-free search and a high level of customization, but the real benefit for this discussion concerns its AI features: Kagi has them, and you can use them if you want to, but you can also avoid them entirely—and even use the browser to fight back against AI results on the web. By default, Kagi keeps its AI "Quick Answer" setting behind a keyboard shortcut. If you want to use it, you'll need to enter a question mark at the end of your query. If you don't use question marks, you'll never see Kagi's version of AI Overviews, but you can also disable the feature entirely from Kagi's settings. That way, even if you ask Kagi a more formal question, you'll get the usual website links—not an AI-generated answer. Kagi also includes an option (appropriately called SlopStop) to block certain results that the search engine believes are AI-generated. That applies to both image and video results, too. Kagi not only allows you to return to a simpler time of endless blue links and zero AI-generated answers, but it actively works to block any known AI content from entering your feed. The only downside is that Kagi isn't free: With other search engines, you pay for your use by being shown ads, but with Kagi, you pay with actual money. Your first 100 searches are free, and paid plans start at $5 per month. Startpage Credit: Lifehacker Startpage's shtick is all about user privacy. According to the company, this search engine removes your personally identifying information each time you search. Rather than sending your request from you directly, Startpage will anonymously send the query to its search providers on your behalf and return the results to you without sharing your data. The search engine doesn't save your search history, and its measures should prevent your searches from being tracked across sites. These privacy perks aside, Starpage has few AI features to worry about. By default, you shouldn't have to deal with them at all on the web app, but you can check under settings for any that may appear—Startpage says it has an optional Summary feature that uses AI to generate result synopses, but I don't even have the option in my Startpage settings. (Summary appears to be separate from Startpage's Instant Answer feature, which doesn't seem to use AI, but which can also be turned off in settings.) It's a similar story on mobile: If you're using the iOS app, the company says it offers optional AI features, but I don't see them in my settings there either. The company also offers a private AI app called Vanish, but that's unrelated to its search engine. Startpage isn't as feature-filled as other search engines, but that might be to its benefit. In my experience, it offers a standard search experience out of the box, without much (if any) AI. Qwant Credit: Lifehacker Qwant, as far as I can tell, has only one AI feature to speak of, called Flash Answer. Like other search engine, this feature uses AI to offer a summary of whatever it is you're asking about. Luckily, if you're looking to use a search engine free of AI, it's quite easy to disable. The first time you use Qwant—at least, in my experience—Flash Answer will appear if Qwant's AI deems it appropriate. You'll see the option at the top of the search results window, complete with stars that denote its AI abilities. Click "Flash Answer," then choose "Deactivated," rather than "Activated by Qwant" (the default), or "Always activated." Unfortunately, it doesn't look like you can strip away the option itself, so you'll always have to stare at the "Flash Answer" button, but at least you can quickly scroll down to view your straightforward links. DuckDuckGo Credit: Lifeahcker DuckDuckGo has long been a go-to option for users looking for a privacy-focused search engine. However, in recent years, the company has taken a bit of a headfirst approach to AI, adding new features and chatbot integrations to keep up with the rest of the industry. If you use DuckDuckGo's defaults, you'll indeed see "Search Assist," its version of AI Overviews, and you'll be invited to try Duck.ai, the company's original chatbot. Fortunately, like other entries on this list, you can disable these options for the most part, and keep the focus on the links. In DuckDuckGo's search engine, click the three lines to find the site's Settings. Here, choose "AI Features," where you'll see all of DuckDuckGo's AI options. Disable Duck.ai, then set Search Assist to "Never." Finally, you can choose to hide AI-generated images, if you really want a search engine experience devoid of AI. Ecosia Credit: Lifehacker Ecosia has long been the choice for eco-conscious web surfers. The company uses its ad revenue to plant trees all over the world, which makes for an engaging pitch: If you're not going to use Google anyway, perhaps you should use a search engine that makes the world a better (or at least greener) place. While Ecosia's main mission hasn't changed, it has added new AI features to the mix. Notably, there are now Overviews, which are Ecosia's AI-generated summaries, as well as AI Chat, which uses models from OpenAI to run. While Overviews are enabled by default, you can disable them at any time from Ecosia's settings (which you'll find at the bottom of any given search results). However, Ecosia doesn't let you disable its AI Chat button, even if you aren't using the feature. That might not be a dealbreaker for you, since the feature isn't engaged unless you click the button, but it's a bit disappointing that Ecosia forces you to look at an invitation to use AI Chat every time you search. About a year ago, Breslow wrote in a LinkedIn post that “HR is the wrong energy, format, and approach.” Instead, the company adopted a “people ops” team to oversee required training and be a resource for Bolt employees. “People ops empowers managers, streamlines decision making, and keeps the company moving at lightning speed,” Breslow continued in the LinkedIn post. “We’re back in startup mode again, and those HR professionals have really important insights when you’re in a peacetime and when you’re at a larger company,” Breslow added at the summit. Across various sectors, AI has changed the traditional HR structure. Companies like IBM, Google and Amazon have restructured and downsized their HR teams—some replacing employees with AI to process administrative tasks, recruitment and benefits. As Fast Company exclusively reported, a new survey found that 62% of Amazon and Walmart employees expressed concern over HR decisions being increasingly outsourced to AI. Recently, rumors circulated that Bolt employees had their wages withheld, and that some of the company’s contractors were unpaid. Breslow denied those claims at the summit.
