  2. In Southwest Airlines’ new Super Bowl ad, boarding looks more like the Hunger Games than an orderly process. Set in an airport that’s been reimagined as a dense jungle, passengers rush to secure their preferred seats before it’s too late: a woman swings on a giant vine to cut her fellow travelers; a grandma shoulder-checks a passerby; and a man creates a dummy seatmate out of twigs to convince other fliers that his aisle seat has already been snagged. The ad is a parody of Southwest’s former open boarding policy, which, since the airline’s official founding in 1971, allowed passengers to choose their own seats in a system that aimed to reduce the hierarchy of tiered seating. In January 2024, Southwest announced that it would be nixing open seating in favor of a more standard assigned seating system, citing the time pressure involved in the open seating process and a new focus on premium seating options as the main reasons for the change. Assigned seating officially rolled out across the airline’s operations on January 27. Southwest describes its new spot, “Boarding Royale,” as a “self-aware clap-back” at its former boarding policy. And, at surface value, the ad is funny, well-executed, and accurate for anyone who’s ever traveled with a nervous flier (or is one). But, taken alongside Southwest’s brand moves over the past two years, the ad feels less like a light-hearted self-own, and more like the hypocritical creative output of a brand that’s seriously lost the plot. “Boarding Royale” pokes fun at open seating “Boarding Royale” was directed by the creative agency GSD&M, Southwest’s longtime agency of record. According to Julia Melle, director of brand and content at Southwest, the ad is designed to “introduce assigned seating in a way that recognizes we understand it’s a category norm” and “feels authentic to our brand.” “Within the spot, there are nods to the various traveler behaviors associated with Southwest’s open seating, such as the traveler who checked in too late, the one who creatively saves seats, and the young families with children who will do anything to ensure they sit together,” Melle says. “Our most loyal customers have probably witnessed these behaviors more than anyone, so we believe the exaggeration will give them a chuckle.” Indeed, the ad does a good job at poking lighthearted fun at the kinds of exasperating, head-scratching behaviors one tends to encounter at the airport. This strategy might’ve worked perfectly well if it was, say, making a silly joke at the expense of a rival airline. But it falls flat when it’s directly making fun of a feature that was a pillar of Southwest’s brand for decades—and was, until recently, a system that the company touted again and again in its own marketing materials. Southwest’s boarding about-face From its inception, Southwest cultivated a reputation as a quirky, low-cost airline for the everyman. Three key features sat at the heart of that brand positioning: open seating, a staunch stance against hidden fees, and an iconic “Bags Fly Free” policy. Over the past several years, the company has shaved away all of those commitments. Some of Southwest’s earliest ads tout the airline’s unique boarding process, which it promised at the time would take less than 10 minutes total. In the ‘80s, a series of print advertisements promised, “Unlike assigned seating, you’re free to sit next to someone just like you.” For years, the brand’s unofficial slogan, oft repeated by flight attendants, was “You can sit anywhere you want—just like at church.” In 2007, backlash to the concept of Southwest eliminating open seating was so strong that the company published a blog titled, “You Spoke and We Listened—Southwest Says Open Seating is Here to Stay!” Southwest’s marketing often used its open seating model—which meant no ticketed class divisions in the cabin—to tout its lack of hidden fees compared to competitors. In the early 2000s, many of the brand’s ads parodied other airlines by showing passengers getting charged additional fees for small luxuries like using the overheard compartments, reclining their seats, or enjoying a snack. In one 2015 campaign titled “Transfarency,” the company promised, “Transfarency means we don’t dream up ways we can trick you into paying more.” A brand that’s lost the plot To say that these spots have aged poorly would be an understatement. When it announced its new assigned seating policy in 2024, Southwest also introduced a category of “premium” seats which come with extra legroom, faster Wi-Fi, and larger overhead bins—for an added cost. It’s currently in the process of renovating its cabins to make room for these seats, which will take up one third of each aircraft’s total seating. In August 2025, it also announced a new policy that requires travelers who don’t fit within the armrests of their seat to pay for an extra one in advance. The brand’s most egregious move by far, though, came in March 2025, when it announced that it would kill its “Bags Fly Free” policy, which allowed travelers to check two bags without added costs. “Bags Fly Free” was a mantra that Southwest repeated in its marketing for decades, including spots in 2009, 2011, and one in 2023 that has since been made private by the company on YouTube. As recently as September 2025, the company said on an earnings call that ending the signature program would be a “destructive” step too far. Southwest has also removed a 2024 study from its website which found that eliminating “Bags Fly Free” would “destroy value.” This isn’t to say that brands aren’t allowed to change their minds or their business strategies. But Southwest hasn’t just evolved with the times; it’s sacrificed some of its most closely held brand attributes values in pursuit of profit. With just a bit of context on Southwest’s repeated capitulations to market pressure, “Boarding Royale” starts to feel less like a silly ad, and more like a betrayal of the company’s purpose. Jensen Huang: “Who’s the smartest person I’ve ever met? “I can’t answer that question. And I know I know what people are thinking. The definition of smart is somebody who’s intelligent, solves problems, technical, but I find that’s a commodity. And we’re not, we’re about to prove that artificial intelligence is able to handle that part easiest, right? Yeah. And so, as it turns out, let me give you another example. “Everybody thought software programming was the ultimate smart profession. Look, what is the first thing that AI is solving? Software programming. And so, it turns out that the definition of smart is very different than most people think. And I think long-term, the definition of smart and my personal definition of smart is someone who sits at that intersection of being technically astute but human empathy and having the ability to infer the unspoken, the around the corners, the unknowables. You know, people who are able to see around corners are truly, truly smart, and that their value is incredible. To be able to preempt problems before they show up, just because you feel the vibe. And the vibe came from a combination of uh data, analysis, first principle, life experience, wisdom, sensing other people. That vibe that I think that’s smart, that I think is going to be the future definition of smart, and that person might actually score horribly on the SAT.” The complete interview is a treat to listen to and you can find it on Shelton’s YouTube page. 19. In a significant move for small business owners and disaster survivors in California, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is set to introduce new regulations that streamline the recovery process following devastating wildfires. President Donald J. The President’s recent executive order aims to bypass lengthy state and local bureaucracy that has hindered timely access to recovery funds. This initiative promises to deliver critical support to thousands of Californians awaiting approval to rebuild. This executive order marks a vital response to long-standing permitting backlogs, which have left many disaster survivors unable to utilize over $3.2 billion in federal relief funds approved by the SBA. Kelly Loeffler, Administrator of the SBA, emphasized the urgency of action, stating, “Today, while local officials continue to delay, the The President Administration is stepping in to do what the Governor and Mayor did not.” By allowing survivors to circumvent bureaucratic hurdles, the SBA aims to enable faster recovery for both individuals and businesses affected by the Eaton and Palisades wildfires. As of now, less than 25% of the disaster relief funds have been drawn down due to these bureaucratic challenges. Despite the approval of about 12,600 disaster loans for Los Angeles, over a year after the wildfires, fewer than 3,000 permits have been issued for rebuilding homes and businesses in the affected areas. In fact, data shows that only a handful of homes have been reconstructed, with a majority of residents still in temporary housing. “With this executive order, the SBA is introducing straightforward regulations that allow us to deploy immediate relief,” Loeffler added. The implications of this executive order for small business owners are notable. The streamlined process could significantly accelerate the rebuilding timeline, enabling entrepreneurs to restore operations sooner. By permitting self-certification for compliance with local regulations, small business owners may find it easier to access the funds they need without the protracted wait associated with traditional permitting processes. However, while this initiative presents clear benefits, small business owners should be aware of potential challenges. Self-certification may lead to questions of compliance and accountability. Entrepreneurs will need to ensure that they thoroughly understand the regulations they are bypassing. Additionally, the expedited process may necessitate a quicker pace in project planning and execution. Owners should be prepared for the possibility of increased pressure to mobilize resources rapidly. Furthermore, the SBA has extended the deadline for utilizing approved disaster loans to June 30, 2026, providing additional time for borrowers affected by unprecedented delays. Small business owners should take this opportunity to evaluate their current plans and strategize how best to leverage the available funds for a swift recovery. For business owners and residents seeking information on disaster assistance, the SBA advises visiting their disaster assistance site at sba.gov/disaster or contacting the Disaster Assistance Customer Service Center. As the agency works on publishing the new regulations, attention to deadlines and compliance will be paramount for ensuring a smooth transition into the rebuilding phase. The path forward may be fraught with both opportunities and challenges. However, this executive order signals a proactive step towards alleviating the frustrations faced by Californians striving to recover from the devastating impact of wildfires. Small business owners should stay informed about the evolving guidelines and take advantage of the resources provided by the SBA to navigate their unique situations effectively. For more details on the executive order and its implications, you can read the original press release from the SBA here. 27. Regarding business line of credit rates, knowing the options can greatly impact your financial decisions. Rates vary widely, from traditional banks starting around 3.50% to online lenders charging up to 90%. Comprehending the factors that influence these rates, such as your business’s revenue and creditworthiness, is essential. This knowledge can help you secure better terms. Are you curious about how to navigate these options and find the best fit for your needs? Key Takeaways Traditional bank rates start at approximately 3.50%, while online lenders range from 15% to 90% depending on borrower risk. SBA lines of credit can offer rates as low as Prime Rate + 2.25%, with terms up to 10 years. Established businesses with strong revenues may secure rates between 7% to 12%, while newer businesses face rates from 15% to 36%. Factors affecting rates include credit scores, cash flow, and revenue, with extra fees impacting overall borrowing costs. To secure favorable rates, maintain a personal credit score of at least 700 and compare offers from multiple lenders. Current Business Line of Credit Rates When exploring current business line of credit rates, it’s important to understand that these rates can vary considerably based on the lender and your business profile. Typically, traditional banks offer rates starting around 3.50%, whereas online lenders can charge anywhere from 15% to 90%. If you’re considering an SBA line of credit, you might find rates as low as Prime Rate + 2.25%, with terms lasting up to 10 years and limits reaching $5 million. Established businesses with strong revenue streams tend to secure lower interest rates, whereas newer or riskier businesses might face rates between 15% and 36%. As of October 30, 2025, the Prime Rate was approximately 7%. What Is a Business Line of Credit? A business line of credit is a flexible financial tool that acts like a revolving credit account, allowing you to borrow up to a predetermined limit, repay the borrowed amount, and then borrow again as needed within a specified draw period. This type of credit functions similarly to a credit card, making it convenient for various business needs. You can manage cash flow, cover unexpected expenses, or invest in growth opportunities. Interest rates for a business line of credit typically range from 7% to 36%, depending on whether the line is secured or unsecured, your credit profile, and the lender’s risk assessment. Many lenders offer fast funding, often providing access to funds as quickly as the next business day after approval. To qualify, you usually need a minimum credit score of around 600 to 700, along with proof of revenue and operational history. How to Get the Best Business Line of Credit Interest Rates How can you secure the best interest rates for a business line of credit? Start by aiming for a personal credit score of at least 700, as this greatly boosts your approval odds and lowers rates from lenders. If your business is established with strong revenue and a solid financial track record, you could qualify for lower interest rates, typically between 7% and 12% for secured lines of credit. Next, compare multiple lenders, since rates can vary widely; online lenders may provide quicker funding but often at higher rates, whereas Bank of America usually offer lower rates for established businesses. Finally, understand the complete cost of borrowing by reviewing both the APR and any associated fees, such as annual or draw fees. Staying informed about market conditions and the Prime Rate as well helps you anticipate potential changes in borrowing costs, ensuring you secure the best business line of credit rates available. Factors Influencing Business Line of Credit Rates Various factors influence the rates for business lines of credit, and comprehending them can help you make informed borrowing decisions. Line of credit interest rates typically depend on the Prime Rate, with many lenders offering rates starting from Prime + 3% to Prime + 8% for SBA-backed lines. If you have an established business with strong revenue and good credit scores, you might secure secured lines of credit at rates from 7% to 12%. On the other hand, new or small businesses often face higher rates, usually ranging from 15% to 36% for unsecured credit lines. Lenders evaluate borrower risk through personal and business credit scores, cash flow, and revenue, which greatly impact the interest rates offered. Moreover, don’t forget to factor in any extra fees, like annual, draw, and maintenance fees, as they affect the overall cost of borrowing against your business line of credit. Business Revenues and Their Impact Strong business revenues play a significant role in determining the rates you’ll encounter when seeking a line of credit. When you approach business line of credit lenders, they’ll evaluate your financial health, and higher revenues often lead to better terms. Here are key factors to contemplate: Revenue Documentation: Most lenders require proof of consistent monthly or annual revenues to assess your eligibility. Revenue Thresholds: Businesses with revenues above $250,000 are typically viewed more favorably, potentially securing lower rates. Creditworthiness: A robust revenue stream improves your creditworthiness, allowing you to qualify for higher limits and lower APRs. Rate Variation: Lenders may offer different interest rates based on revenue brackets, favoring established businesses with significant income. Understanding how your business revenues impact your credit options can help you secure the best rates available. Understanding the Prime Rate Grasping the Prime Rate is essential for any business looking to secure a line of credit. The Prime Rate, currently set at 7% as of October 30, 2025, is the interest rate that commercial banks charge their most creditworthy customers. This rate serves as a benchmark for various loans, including your business line of credit loan. Lenders often set their interest rates based on a markup over the Prime Rate, which means that if you have a strong credit profile, you might receive rates closer to this benchmark. Comprehending how the Prime Rate works can greatly impact your borrowing costs, as fluctuations in this rate will directly affect the interest rates you encounter. Furthermore, the Prime Rate is influenced by the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy and economic indicators like inflation and employment rates, so staying informed about these factors can provide insight into future borrowing conditions. The Role of Personal Credit Scores When you’re seeking a business line of credit, your personal credit score can greatly influence your chances of approval and the terms you’ll receive. Here’s how personal credit scores play a role: Score Impact: A score of 700 or higher typically increases your likelihood of approval with favorable terms. Lender Evaluation: Lenders often consider both personal and business credit scores; a strong personal score can make up for a weaker business history. Minimum Requirements: Most lenders require a personal credit score between 600 and 700, affecting your interest rates and borrowing limits. Interest Rates: A score below 700 may lead to higher interest rates, ranging from 15% to 36%, especially for unsecured lines of credit. Maintaining a good personal credit score is vital, as it can help you secure better rates, possibly between 7% and 12% for established borrowers. Importance of Business Credit Business credit plays an important role in your company’s financial health and growth potential. A strong business credit score is critical for securing financing options, especially when seeking a business line of credit for new business ventures. Lenders often evaluate both personal and business credit scores to determine eligibility for loans and lines of credit. If your business credit score is above 700, you’ll likely enjoy lower interest rates and better financing terms, which can be significant for managing cash flow and unexpected expenses. Approximately 70% of small business owners face financial challenges, emphasizing the need for a solid credit profile. Establishing and maintaining good business credit not just improves your reputation with lenders but also strengthens your relationships with suppliers, leading to favorable trade terms. Financing Speed and Its Effect on Rates When you apply for a business line of credit, the speed of processing your application can greatly affect your interest rates. Faster funding options often come with higher rates, as lenders mitigate the risks associated with quick disbursement. Comprehending how funding availability impacts overall borrowing costs is essential for making informed financial decisions. Application Processing Time Comprehending application processing time is vital for businesses seeking a line of credit, as it directly impacts both financing speed and the rates you may encounter. Here are key points to evaluate: Fast funding options can provide access to funds within just 1 business day after approval. Online lenders typically offer quicker approvals than traditional banks, which may take several days or weeks. Some lenders allow you to compare rates and terms in less than 2 minutes, streamlining your decision-making. Rapid processing can lead to better financing opportunities, helping you capitalize on time-sensitive investments. While speed is advantageous, balancing it with the assessment of line of credit rates and fees guarantees you secure favorable borrowing terms. Funding Availability Speed Accessing funds quickly can greatly impact your business’s financial strategies and decisions. With fast funding options, a business line of credit can provide you access to capital within just one business day, addressing immediate financial needs effectively. Online lenders often streamline the approval process, allowing for quicker access compared to traditional Bank of America. If you have an established credit history and strong financials, you might enjoy even faster funding times, which can lead to better terms. Quick access to funds allows you to cover unexpected expenses or seize growth opportunities without the lengthy wait typical of traditional loans. As a result, grasping the funding availability speed is vital for optimizing your business’s financial agility. Impact on Interest Rates Though quick access to a business line of credit can be appealing, it’s essential to understand how financing speed impacts interest rates. Here are some key points to evaluate: Faster funding options typically lead to higher interest rates because of increased lender risk. Many lenders can provide funding within one business day, but expect higher APRs compared to traditional loans. Online lenders often offer quick access to capital, with rates ranging from 15% to 90%, balancing speed and cost. Traditional banks may have lower rates, typically between 6.7% to 11.5%, but with longer approval processes. When seeking the best line of credit rates, analyze the total borrowing costs, as interest is only charged on the drawn amount. Industry Considerations for Rates When considering business line of credit rates, you need to think about how your revenue and industry risk impact what lenders offer. Higher revenue typically signals stability, which can lead to more favorable rates, whereas industries perceived as high risk might face steeper charges. Comprehending these factors can help you navigate the options and secure the best terms for your financing needs.
