GE Vernova’s CEO on thriving through tariffs and supply chain shifts
Amid tariff whiplash and the rejuggling of global trade, GE Vernova’s CEO Scott Strazik is finding a way to stay “relentlessly optimistic.” Strazik returns to the Rapid Response podcast to share how the company plans to continue its success as one of Wall Street’s top-performing stocks, despite looming supply chain disruption and market unpredictability. This is an abridged transcript of an interview from Rapid Response, hosted by the former editor-in-chief of Fast Company Bob Safian. From the team behind the Masters of Scale podcast, Rapid Response features candid conversations with today’s top business leaders navigating real-time challenges. Subscribe to Rapid Response wherever you get your podcasts to ensure you never miss an episode. GE Vernova is now one year into life as an independent public company, much to celebrate—your revenue rose to $35 billion. In 2024, GE Vernova was the year’s fourth best performing stock. Again, a lot to celebrate. But in 2025, the external environment hasn’t been as friendly. The The President tariffs have everyone scrambling. How do you think about this moment? How do you think about it compared to a year ago at this time? Well, our end markets really haven’t changed very much, Bob. I would start there. I mean, we continue to see very strong end markets in our larger core businesses and gas power, in our electrification and grid businesses. So, frankly, there’s going to be moments of dislocation between the stock market and our end markets. It doesn’t mean that depending on where the tariffs go, that doesn’t create an opportunity for us to prove out our nimbleness and managing our global supply chain, and we’re going to have to do that. But I think it’s frankly an opportunity for us to demonstrate how much we’ve grown in our first year as a public company to be able to operate in this kind of environment. How do the tariffs practically impact your business? I mean, you’re a global business, so changes in global relationships and reputation, all of that requires some adjustment. Yeah, I think even if you take a step back and think about some of the stuff I’ve talked to our investors about on where we want to make investments, we want to invest in our business where we can improve the durability or the resiliency of our supply chain, and that’s simply because we have a lot of organic growth that’s coming in our businesses, irrespective of any policy changes. Now, policies are going to change, they’re going to evolve. This is going to force us to relook at where we source certain things. It’ll force us to revisit our terms with some of our suppliers in different locations, but we know how to do that. So, we don’t want to be too fast to respond as we’re kind of trying to make sense of everything. But I’d also rather be a company that is quick on its feet. In this environment, President The President announced the tariffs on a Wednesday afternoon after the market closed. Rest assured by Friday afternoon, our teams were actively working evaluation plans of what our alternatives are. Now, it doesn’t mean within 40 hours you pull the trigger in a dynamic period of time. So, we’re working it pretty hard right now to figure out what our alternatives are, and with a growing backlog, to the extent our backlog is growing so substantially, that also puts us in a privileged position with our supply base to come and say, “Listen, this is what it’s going to take to keep serving GE Vernova.” It’s almost like there’s been a pullback around the very idea of globalization that maybe it’s not good to be a global organization. Do you think about that? Well, when I think about my first four months of the year. I mean, my first trip of the year was to Singapore and Japan, the first week of January. I had a great trip in the Middle East in February visiting Saudi, Qatar, Dubai, Abu Dhabi. These are all important markets for us. I think we’ve got opportunities to serve these markets throughout, and we’re going to work really hard to earn those opportunities. At the same time, long before announcements with tariffs, the reality is there has been an evolving shift with globalization. There’s certainly been a lot of strategic moves towards concepts of decoupling from the Chinese supply chain explicitly. So, we’ve been working that over a long period of time. Now, the last week certainly has been broader than any one country, and with it, it forces you to really revisit it in an even more intimate way, what you do and where you do it, but we can do that. We’re capable of taking that on, and I’m highly confident we can use this moment to make ourselves a better company for the long term. You have announced investing $600 million in U.S. factories yourself creating over 1,500 jobs. Yes. How much does GE Vernova need to be an American company? I would say more we need to be a local company for our local markets. I think in your bigger markets, you’re going to have a local supply chain to serve that market, local teams to serve that market. We’re a global company where, at this moment, one of our most important local markets certainly is the U.S., and that’s why we’re investing into that market. But we’re not going to not invest in some of these other countries that are attractive and markets too to be local there. There’s been some speculation that the speed with which U.S. manufacturing can ramp up to replace things that might have come from abroad, that that’s going to take a while and there’s going to be disruption. Is that something for your business that you see that you worry about, or is that part of the nimbleness, I guess, that you’re talking about on the part of your team? We do have a fair amount of industrial footprint in the U.S. that allows us to build on existing assets. So, the $600 million investment is reinvesting in existing assets, 1,500 jobs to locations that already have the concrete poured. They already have the cranes. They already have the logistics with the railroad adjacent to the factory. So, we can move reasonably quickly. Now, to the extent the policy environment drives us towards greenfield investments to reindustrialize parts of our supply chain, that would take longer, truth be told. And that’s a multiyear journey that, at this point, we aren’t necessarily evaluating, but we will keep looking in that regard. But first and foremost, we’re going to keep trying to eliminate waste in our existing processes and build upon the assets we have, and we feel like that can carry us for a period of time. Now, where we don’t have it, as an example, we announced and closed an acquisition of a supply chain footprint from Woodward. That was a vertical supply chain integration of a small part of Woodward’s business, but for our gas business, an important part of our supply chain where we thought it made more sense to just have that internal. How much do you tune your long-term decision-making when there’s noise and change and pressure in the near term? We need to scrutinize how long the status quo is, for sure. And that can be hard to do in a volatile moment that we’re in. But if nothing else, it gives us a chance to really challenge ourselves on what we have been doing, whether there’s a different way to do it. And that’s the way we talk about it internally is: “This is an opportunity for us to really revisit past assumptions and think about how we can be better.” Now, in some cases, we may gain conviction with exactly the play we’ve been running. In others, there may be a better alternative. I mean, do you have, sort of, I don’t know, leadership principles or lessons that you use as a touchstone when things do get volatile? Well, we’re not going to suck our thumbs and cry on our beer as things kind of change. We want to use change as an opportunity to improve. In that regard, this moment when we’re just reaching our one-year anniversary as a public company is a moment when I feel pretty confident we’ve got our feet on the ground, and we can play into this and use this moment of change to play offense on not just how we want 2025 to go, because we won’t change 2025 in any material way certainly from a supply chain strategy, but we can use 2025 to challenge ourselves for the next decade, and that’s very much what we’re doing. I still have to work if I don’t attend team-building, boss has hired my replacement but I’m not ready to leave, and more
This post was written by Alison Green and published on Ask a Manager. It’s five answers to five questions. Here we go… 1. If I opt out of team-building activities, I still have to work on those days I work for a small nonprofit with about 25 employees. Recently, we have begun “employee engagement” activities, like visiting local attractions. These activities take place during work hours. We are not forced to participate, but if we choose not to, then we are expected to work while those who do want to participate are basically paid to hang out at a local attraction, restaurant, etc. I don’t enjoy these kinds of group activities, but I’m not trying to keep anyone from going if they wish to. I don’t mind staying at work, but I am expected to cover for another employee (who always chooses to do the engagement activities) instead of being able to do my own work. Am I just a party pooper or is it weird for some employees to be paid to goof off while others are being paid to work? Am I wrong to think I shouldn’t have to cover for someone else when no other employee is expected to do that? I don’t think it’s unreasonable. They’re offering these activities because they believe they serve an organizational purpose: team-building. If you prefer not to participate, you don’t have to (which is actually better than at some organizations, where you’d be expected to attend regardless) — but they’re not going to just give you a day off, because that doesn’t provide any value to the org. That said, if covering for people who aren’t there means you have an unrealistic workload that day, you should talk with your manager about adjusting the expectations to match the staffing on those days. But if it’s more just about being annoyed by the principle of it, you should let it go. 2. My boss has hired my replacement but I’m not ready to leave I am actively looking for a new job and communicated this intent to my bosses as we have an open communication relationship. As is their right, they started to look for my replacement, which they found and have since hired. I am still actively looking for a job and have given no notice of my intended departure date. What are the obligations to me of my current employer given that I have not quit my job and there is someone we are on-boarding right now for my job? For a relationship with open communication, it doesn’t sound like there’s nearly enough communication going on! (Or at least not unless there’s been a lot more discussion of this than what’s in your letter.) You need to talk to your manager and you should do it immediately, as in today. They may be assuming you’re leaving any day now … or they may assume it’ll be months and figure it’s fine for there to be overlap for that time … or they may be okay with a little overlap but at some point are going to expect you to set a clear end date or will do it for you. When you alerted them that you were planning to leave, they may have jumped the gun — but this is also why it generally doesn’t make sense to alert your boss that you’re job-searching until you’re ready to give notice or at least have a very clear timeline in your head. Your manager should have clarified that with you before they hired a replacement! But it seems like they didn’t, so here we are. Now that this is in motion, they can set your ending date for any time they want, so talk with them ASAP and figure out a plan for what happens next. Be very clear that you don’t have any firm plans, had not intended to give formal notice, and don’t want to leave right away. Ideally they won’t respond to your early heads-up by pushing you out sooner than you want to go … but there’s a risk that’s in progress and so the sooner you figure it out, the better. Related: employee said she was leaving and has been replaced, but now doesn’t know when she is going to leave 3. How to implement a policy I don’t agree with I am the deputy lead for my department. I manage 13 people directly, and two of those people are managers themselves, each with a team of three. The team works a hybrid schedule, with most people choosing to work from home once or twice a week. There are no set days; we have a lot of flexibility. All staff have laptops and other required equipment at home. My company has a policy that when office PCs reach the end of their lifespan, they will not be replaced. Instead, staff will be given a docking station and are expected to use their work laptops at home and in the office. This policy was announced a couple of years ago, but this is a large company (~20,000 staff) and it seems my predecessor did not inform the team at the time as it didn’t impact them. Now I have been told that our office PCs are end of life and we will be getting docking stations soon. My team are livid! For example, those with chronic health conditions can currently choose to work from home if their condition flares up. But if their laptop is in the office, they won’t be able to work from home. They have also questioned what happens during bad weather when they cannot get to the office, but cannot work from home because the laptop is in the office. I have raised this with the department manager and his answer was that they will have to take the laptops home each day and bring them back the next day if working in the office. My team doesn’t want to carry laptops back and forth every day, especially those who walk or cycle. They have raised concerns about whether they are responsible for the equipment on their commute, what happens if it gets broken or stolen, and if they won’t be able to go out and socialize after work as they will be lugging a laptop around. I agree with all these concerns! I have raised them with the manager, who said that staff are responsible for keeping equipment safe. He also said this is company policy and we have to follow it. How do I navigate this when I agree with my staff? What language can I use to say I hear you, I agree with you, but we have no choice? Or should I be taking a difference stance and projecting to the team that I agree wholeheartedly with this? “I agree and I’ve made that argument, but unsuccessfully. So for now this is the policy and we do need to follow it.” You don’t need to pretend you disagree with them, but it’s also not helpful to contribute to people staying in a state of agitation about it. You want more of a middle ground — “it’s not what I would have chosen, but at this point we don’t have the ability to change it, so let’s figure out how to work within it.” It is a bad policy, for what that’s worth. I don’t know how much you’ve pushed back with your boss on it; if not much, there may be room to try more assertively. But it’s also true that you can only do that so much, and at some point you do need to accept that the answer is no … and in a company of 20,000, it might be particularly unlikely that you’re going to get the policy changed from your level. (That said, can you at least argue for keeping the PCs until they truly can’t be used anymore? I can’t tell if they’re removing them all when the docking stations arrive, but if they are, that might be a spot where you have room to change things.) Related: how managers should communicate decisions they don’t agree with 4. Fixing grammar and spelling mistakes I’m a leader of a medium-sized team in technology in a large, corporate environment. We’re in the U.S. but for a lot of team members English is their second language. When I see spelling and grammar mistakes in presentations that I’m reviewing, is it better to quickly fix it myself (easy to do and quick, although not the point of why I’m reviewing as I’m more focused on the content) or leave a comment (which feels nitpicky and takes longer but maybe that will help them learn)? Or do nothing? I do not judge their performance based on what is clearly a language barrier, but I also want their writing to be clear and easy to understand for their audience. The main job duties are not writing but in a large company, we make a lot of slides and more so as you move up in leadership. It’s a judgment call. All else being equal, I’d fix it and leave a quick, matter-of-fact note about what you did (like “changed ’there’ to ’their’” or so forth) but if there will be a lot of those sorts of edits in a single document, I’d just fix them all and then include one note with feedback about any common patterns if you saw any and if it seems like it would be helpful. If what you’re reviewing is in a format that allows for something like Track Changes, that’s ideal but not always possible. 5. Companies that don’t provide offer letters I’m interviewing with multiple companies and received a verbal offer via phone call from one company. Typically, I’m used to this being followed up by a formal electronic offer letter. The hiring manager indicated that is not the case, and that the details of the phone call are the offer letter. I mentioned this to another employer who I’m in a last interview round with, and they informed me that this is how it’s done at their company as well. I am very experienced in my field, and I can vouch for the legitimacy of these companies and interviewers. This is the first time I’m working without a formal offer letter since the early 2000s. Have standards changed? Nope, there have always been companies that don’t send written offer letters. It seems strange when you’re used to getting them, but it’s always been a thing. You can absolutely say, “Would it be possible to get the details of the offer — salary, benefits, title, and any other relevant information — in an email so I can look it over and be sure I’m getting all the details correct?” Alternately, you can write that email yourself and send it to them, framing it as, “I just want to summarize the details we’ve discussed.” Related: an employer told me they don’t provide written offers View the full article

Inflation remains a pressing concern, with over half of small businesses ranking it as their top issue. OpenAI names new philanthropy advisors, including labor icon Dolores Huerta
OpenAI has named labor leader Dolores Huerta and three others to a temporary advisory board that will help guide the artificial intelligence company’s philanthropy as it attempts to shift itself into a for-profit business. Huerta, who turned 95 last week, formed the first farmworkers union with Cesar Chavez in the early 1960s and will now have a say on the direction of philanthropic initiatives that OpenAI says will consider “both the promise and risks of AI.” The group will have just 90 days to make their suggestions. “She recognizes the significance of AI in today’s world and anybody who’s been paying attention for the last 50 years knows she will be a force in this conversation,” said Daniel Zingale, the convener of OpenAI’s new nonprofit commission and a former adviser to three California governors. Huerta’s advice won’t be binding but the presence of a social activist icon could be influential as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman attempts a costly restructuring of the San Francisco company’s corporate governance, which requires the approval of California’s attorney general and others. Another coalition of labor leaders and nonprofits recently petitioned state Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, to investigate OpenAI, halt the proposed conversion and “protect billions of dollars that are under threat as profit-driven hunger for power yields conflicts of interest.” OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, started out in 2015 as a nonprofit research laboratory dedicated to safely building better-than-human AI that benefits humanity. It later formed a for-profit arm and shifted most of its staff there, but is still controlled by a nonprofit board of directors. It is now trying to convert itself more fully into a for-profit corporation but faces a number of hurdles, including getting the approval of California and Delaware attorneys general, potentially buying out the nonprofit’s pricy assets and fighting a lawsuit from co-founder and early investor Elon Musk. Backed by Japanese tech giant SoftBank, OpenAI last month said it’s working to raise $40 billion in funding, putting its value at $300 billion. Huerta will be joined on the new advisory commission by former Spanish-language media executive Monica Lozano; Robert Ross, the recently retired president of The California Endowment; and Jack Oliver, an attorney and longtime Republican campaign fundraiser. Zingale, the group’s convener, is a former aide to California governors including Democrat Gavin Newsom and Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger. “We’re interested in how you put the power of AI in the hands of everyday people and the community organizations that serve them,” Zingale said in an interview Wednesday. “Because, if AI is going to bring a renaissance, or a dark age, these are the people you want to tip the scale in favor of humanity.” The Associated Press and OpenAI have a licensing and technology agreement that allows OpenAI access to part of AP’s text archives. —Matt O’Brien, AP technology writer View the full article

Need a moment of zen? Millions are captivated by this livestream of the Great Moose Migration in Sweden
Given all the recent bad news on the world stage, from tariffs wars to the war in Ukraine, it is no wonder Swedes are tuning in, for a moment of zen, to watch a livestream of “The Great Moose Migration” (loosely translated from the Swedish, “Den stora älgvandringen“). The 24-hour event, which runs for 20 days straight, kicked off on Tuesday. It has been providing soothing entertainment for millions of Swedes each year, around this time, since it first aired in 2019. That first year, nearly one million Swedes tuned in to literally watch moose walk through forests and swim across the Ångerman River, all captured by remote cameras and drones, per the Associated Press. By last year, the sleeper hit had a following of a whopping 9 million viewers, who watched along on Sweden’s national public television’s streaming platform, SVT Play. This year, the livestream started airing a week early, when the moose got an earlier-than-normal start due to warmer weather. From now until May 4, viewers can watch dozens of moose migrate to their favorite pastures located about 187 miles northwest of the country’s capital, Stockholm, per the AP. Sure, there’s not much happening, but that’s why so many people find it relaxing. So much so, that over 78,000 Swedes have joined a Facebook group with fans sharing photos of their TV screens when moose appear, according to NBC News. In fact, “The Great Moose Migration” is part of a larger global trend of relaxing, nature-oriented livestreams with not too much going on, which began in 2009 when NRK, Norway’s public broadcaster, aired a seven-hour train trip across the southern part of the country. That trend has even extended to the U.S., where thousands of captivated viewers have tuned in to watch two birds, Jackie and Shadow, via their bald eagle nest cam in California. View the full article

White House restricts wire services’ access to Trump
The Associated Press says that a new White House media policy violates a court order by giving the administration sole discretion over who gets to question President Donald The President, and the news agency asked a federal judge on Wednesday to enforce that order. The swift move was in response to a policy issued late Tuesday by the White House, which suffered a courtroom loss last week over The Associated Press’ ability to cover The President. The plans, the latest attempt by the new administration to control coverage of its activities, sharply curtail the access of three news agencies that serve billions of readers around the world. The AP filed Wednesday’s motion with U.S. District Judge Trevor N. McFadden, asking for relief “given defendant’s refusal to obey” his order last week. McFadden said the White House had violated the AP’s free speech by banning it from certain presidential events because The President disagreed with the outlet’s decision not to rename the Gulf of Mexico. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt did not immediately return a message seeking comment on Wednesday. Leavitt is a defendant in the AP’s lawsuit, along with White House chief of staff Susan Wiles and her deputy, Taylor Budowich. The AP’s lawsuit claimed that its First Amendment rights were violated by the White House blocking its reporters and photographers from covering The President. McFadden ordered the administration to treat the AP as it does other news organizations. Reframing who gets access to the president for questions For many years, the independent White House Correspondents Association has run the pool for the limited space events, and each time it has included reporters from the wire services AP, Reuters and Bloomberg. One print reporter was also allowed, selected on a rotating basis from more than 30 news outlets. The White House now says it will lump the three wire services with print reporters for two slots — meaning roughly three dozen reporters will rotate for two regular slots. Wire services typically report and write stories that are used by different media outlets around the world. Even with the rotation, the White House said The President’s press secretary “shall retain day-to-day discretion to determine composition of the pool.” The new policy says reporters will also be allowed in “irrespective of the substantive viewpoint expressed by an outlet.” Seeing their own access cut back along with the AP’s, representatives from Bloomberg and Thomson Reuters also protested the new policy. “For decades, the daily presence of the wire services in the press pool has ensured that investors and voters across the United States and around the world can rely on accurate real-time reporting on what the president says and does,” said Bloomberg Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait. “We deeply regret the decision to remove that permanent level of scrutiny and accountability.” In a statement, the AP’s Lauren Easton said the outlet was deeply disappointed that rather than restore the AP’s access, the White House instead chose restrictions over all of the wire services. “The wire services represent thousands of news organizations across the U.S. and the world over,” said Easton, an AP spokeswoman. “Our coverage is used by local newspapers and television stations in all 50 states to inform their communities. “The administration’s actions continue to disregard the fundamental American freedom to speak without government control or retaliation,” Easton said Tuesday night. The WHCA said the administration’s insistence on retaining control over who covers the president shows that it is unwilling to guarantee that it would not continue viewpoint discrimination. “The government should not be able to control the independent media that covers it,” said Eugene Daniels, the association’s president. More access for The President-friendly media Under Leavitt, the White House has given greater access to news outlets friendly to The President. That was visible Tuesday, when the first reporter Leavitt addressed during a briefing asked two questions while also praising The President policy. At Monday’s Oval Office meeting, The President bristled at questions from CNN’s Kaitlan Collins about a man deported to an El Salvador prison, at one point accusing CNN of “hating our country.” He made it a point to contrast her questions with a non-pointed one from another reporter. Despite the occasional fireworks, The President has made himself accessible to the media more than his predecessor, former President Joe Biden. Cramped-quarters events, particularly in the Oval Office, are some of his favorite places to talk — rendering the new access policy all the more impactful. The new policy advanced on Tuesday did not address access for photographers. At an earlier court hearing about the AP’s case, the outlet’s chief White House photographer, Evan Vucci, and correspondent Zeke Miller testified about how the ban has hurt the business of a news agency built to quickly get news and images to its customers. The dispute stems from AP’s decision not to follow the president’s executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico, although AP style does cite The President’s wish that it be called the Gulf of America. McFadden agreed with AP’s argument that the government cannot punish the news organization for what it says — for exercising its right to free speech. The White House has argued that press access to the president is a privilege, not a right, that it should control — much like it decides to whom The President gives one-on-one interviews. In court papers filed last weekend, his lawyers signaled that even with McFadden’s decision, the AP’s days of unchallenged access to open presidential events were over. “No other news organization in the United States receives the level of guaranteed access previously bestowed upon the AP,” the administration argued. “The AP may have grown accustomed to its favored status, but the Constitution does not require that such status endure in perpetuity.” The administration has appealed McFadden’s ruling, and is scheduled to be in an appeals court on Thursday to argue that ruling should be put on hold until the merits of the case are fully decided, perhaps by the U.S. Supreme Court. The administration has not curtailed AP access to Leavitt’s briefings over the past two months. It has blocked access to events in the East Room to White House-credentialed AP reporters — until Tuesday, when one was allowed into an event that involved the Navy football team. —DAVID BAUDER AP Media Writer View the full article

Google No Longer Supports Android 12 or Android 12L
If you have a smartphone running Android 12 that can't upgrade past that version, I have some bad news: Google is dropping support for your phone. RIP Android 12As spotted by Android Authority, Google is no longer seeding security updates for devices running Android 12 and Android 12L. The company omitted the Android version from its April 2025 Android Security Bulletin, which notes security vulnerabilities Google has identified and patched, and as well as which versions of Android receive those patches. The company highlights Android 13, 14, and 15 across a number of different vulnerabilities, but not Android 12. The outlet isn't basing this news off these omissions alone: Android Authority reports that Google dropped support for Android 12 and 12L as of March 31, based on a source that says the company ended security patch backports for those versions on that date. Backporting is when a developer takes a security patch from a newer version of software and adds it to an older version of that software. It seems Google had been doing that for Android 12 from newer versions of Android, but as of the end of March, has stopped. Google hasn't said exactly why it is ending support for Android 12 at this time, but it almost assuredly has to do with the OS' age. The company released the version (codenamed Snow Cone) back in October of 2021. It was a relatively big update for Android, notably introducing "Material You" to devices for the first time. Material You significantly changed the look of Android, adjusting UI elements, app icons, and applying a universal theme based on the colors of your wallpaper. The update also included a number of privacy settings as well as a handful of new gesture controls. According to Android Authority, Google stops most Android OS backporting around three and a half years after release, so this timing tracks. Is your device affected? The biggest issue here is that there are a lot of devices out there running Android 12. Statcounter says nearly 12.5% of Android phones around the globe are running this version, while 9.14% of Android users in the United States are running it. Blacklinko claims there are more than three billion Android phones active across the world, which means there could be more than 370 million Android phones out there about to lose security updates. If your Android phone can't update past Android 12, it might be time to upgrade. Sure, you can live without new Android features, but security updates are vital. Inevitably, someone will discover security flaws within Android that affect Android 12, but since Google is no longer backporting patches to this version, those flaws will go unpatched. As such, bad actors can exploit those flaws in targeted attacks, leaving you vulnerable. If you're looking for a new Android smartphone, Lifehacker's sister site PCMag has a list of its favorite Android phones for 2025. If you opt for a new Google or Samsung phone, know that these company guarantee seven years of software and security support. If you buy a Pixel 9a today, for example, you won't have to worry about a similar situation until 2032. View the full article

Why the power of habits might just live up to the hype
Subscribe to Work LifeGet stories like this in your inbox Subscribe There’s been more than a little buzz about habits lately. To take just one example: James Clear’s 2018 book “Atomic Habits” spent an eye-popping 260 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Books like these – including the 1989 classic “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” – promise that habits are a key to transforming your personal and professional life. And they draw on our collective, perennial desire to form good habits (and break bad ones) as a way of optimizing our life. But does the power of habits live up to the hype? Experts point to a deep well of neuroscience to show that habits are a potent way to make lasting changes in your life, but they’re not magic. Getting results from your daily habits takes intention, discipline, and a lot of time. Let’s sift through the fanfare around habits, and get down to the advice that can truly improve your professional or personal life. What is a habit? Related Article Quiz: Which time management strategy is right for you? By Kat Boogaard In Productivity A habit is “a routine that repeats automatically in response to a trigger.” That’s the definition from Ally Meyers, a certified executive and positive psychology coach, and Yale-certified expert in the science of well-being. It succinctly describes the “habit loop” that’s essential to understand. Let’s break it down. The trigger, or cue, is something that prompts you to start a routine. This could be arriving at a certain location, being around a specific person, or seeing the clock reach a certain time of day. The thought or action is what happens next in response to the cue. The reward is the feel-good moment after the thought or action, which makes you want to do it again in response to that same trigger. There are endless examples of habits and their attendant loops. You likely have a habit of brushing your teeth every night: You’re cued by the arrival of bedtime, you brush your teeth, and then you feel good for having done so. In a professional setting, you might have a habit of checking in with your boss every morning: You’re cued by your arrival at your desk, you pop into your manager’s office, and then you feel satisfied with getting your day off to a good start. This works because your brain can effortlessly follow new paths as they become well-worn with repetition. A habit, however, is distinct from something like an addiction. “An addiction is a habit that has spiraled out of control and is causing harm to either yourself or somebody else,” Meyers says. Major medical organizations describe addiction as a chronically relapsing brain disease, which again is a compulsion beyond a simple habit. Why habits are important at work Many of us want to accomplish big things at work. Maybe you aspire to a big promotion, or want to check an ambitious project off your to-do list. Accomplishing those things is often a result of habits, whether we realize it or not. “Success, no matter how you define it, doesn’t come from one standalone act,” Meyers says. “It comes from daily routines, which are made up of all of your small habits. That’s what drives the ship.” One example of this is creating a habit of a consistent sleep schedule. Getting a good night’s rest every so often is good, but unlikely to create a stable foundation for your work life. Making it a habit – getting eight hours of sleep every night, or at least most nights – can give you the consistent energy to tackle big projects at work over the long haul, or produce higher-quality results. The limitations (and misconceptions) of habits Habits are powerful, but they’re not inherently useful unless they serve a larger purpose. It’s great to build and successfully maintain a habit, Meyers says, but not for its own sake. They are a means to an end, so it’s crucial to reflect regularly and make sure your habits are aligned with your desired outcome. Another misconception is that habits will automatically form in a certain number of days, for everyone in every context. The reality is more complicated. “The likelihood of success depends on so many moving parts,” Meyers says. For example, your environment can accelerate the timeline of habit formation (if people around you are forming similar habits) or lengthen it (if you’re surrounded by competing triggers). In fact, your environment can do a lot to boost your own willpower, according to USC psychology professor Wendy Wood. It might be tempting to think we can brute-force our way into new habits, but adding helpful cues to our surroundings can go a long way. It’s the classic advice of leaving your gym bag packed, at the door, so you don’t have an excuse to skip the gym in the morning. And one last thing: Despite what the DuoLingo owl might have you think, missing one day of a habit (i.e. “breaking your streak”) is not catastrophic, Meyers says. What’s more useful is to zoom out and recognize that completing, say, 27 out of 30 days in a month is still a success. How do habits actually work? The key to forming new habits, on a brain-level, is something called neuroplasticity. This term “refers to the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections in response to learning and behavioral changes,” according to Jessica Koehler Ph.D. When you’re forming new habits, you’re taking advantage of that neuroplasticity. Meyers explains it using a metaphor: Imagine you come to the edge of a forest, and there’s no clear way through. You pick a random spot and start bushwacking, scraping yourself on branches along the way. It’s painful, but you make it to the other side. Next time you approach the forest, you can vaguely see the path you took, and you try to follow it – still getting scraped up a bit, but not as much. Eventually, the path becomes so well-worn that you can follow it easily and without effort. This is, in a way, what happens when you form a new habit. It might feel hard at first, but as you repeat it, the neural pathway becomes stronger in your brain, and easier to follow automatically, Meyers says. And remember that “cue-routine-reward” loop from earlier? That has a strong basis in neuroscience, too. “Over time, your brain associates the cue with the reward, and the behavior becomes automatic,” Koehler writes. How to form good habits Related Article 5 tips to find your best morning routine By Kat Boogaard In Productivity There are plenty of good habits you might want to form in your professional life, like time-blocking for deep focus or doing regular check-ins with your manager. Here’s how to do it: Identify the habit you want to create. Choose a cue, or trigger, that will prompt you to start the habit loop. Perform the action. Feel the reward of following through. “It’s key to recognize you just kept that promise to yourself,” Meyers says. Let’s say you’re trying to create that habit of deep-focus work sessions. Here’s what that could look like: Cue: Each morning, before you start your work day, look at your schedule and identify a block of time you can use for focused work. Put this on your calendar. Action: When the allotted time arrives, silence your notifications and work on your task, uninterrupted, for the duration of the time block. Reward: You’ll get the sense of accomplishment for having made real progress on your project – and will be more likely to repeat the action in the future. The steps are rather simple, and they can flex to meet your needs. For example, Meyers recommends keeping the rewards mostly intrinsic (e.g. that hit of dopamine for feeling productive) rather than extrinsic (e.g. eating a bar of chocolate). But you might want to incorporate the occasional external reward to give yourself an extra incentive to keep up a daily habit, Meyers says. How to break bad habits Breaking undesirable habits works basically in reverse. Identify the habit you’d like to leave behind. Add friction to the undesired action. Create a desirable alternative. Recognize when you successfully avoid the undesired action. Meyers did this in her own life with the habit of aimlessly scrolling on her phone. She recognized this was something she often did while bored, and wanted to stop. She added friction by turning off her phone in certain situations, or leaving it in the car when she was out. Then, she carried a daily planner with her to create a desirable alternative: In moments of boredom, she’d take out the notebook and reflect on the progress she’d made on her to-do list, which created a hit of dopamine similar to what she got from scrolling. It’s not perfect: Sometimes Myers still grabs the phone in moments of boredom, but now she’s much more likely to go for the notebook, instead. good habits menu Not sure what kind of habits to incorporate in your life? Here are some that Meyers recommends: Create a sleep schedule and stick to it: Meyers calls this a “keystone habit” that ensures you’re rested enough to tackle more ambitious habits. Start each day with solitude: Having a moment to yourself in the morning helps you reflect and take care of your own needs. Identify your top three goals for each day: Maybe in that moment of solitude, you can set your priorities for the day before distractions take hold. Acknowledge your wins: Take a moment at the end of the day to celebrate what went well, and recognize your own progress. Create a screen-free bedtime routine: Avoiding blue light from phones or laptops before bed can help you regulate your sleep cycle and get more rest.
