Is it always the case that workers have to decide whether to comply with return-to-office mandates, or leave or risk being fired? My large, multinational company has instituted a return-to-office mandate, and recently released their policy regarding compliance and punishment. Some aspects seem so unreasonable and obviously intended to reduce headcount that I wonder if they are legal. This company has many subsidiary offices across multiple countries. During the quarantine years, we hired a lot of remote workers. One subsidiary office was even officially made a 100% remote workplace. Things went well, and many products were successfully shipped. Last summer, the CEO announced that everyone who lived within a particular radius of any office — anywhere — would need to work in said office three days a week, regardless of whether that office housed the actual company they work for. If you work for Pink Teapots Inc. in Seattle but you live in Detroit close enough to the Orange Kettles office, you will go to the Orange Kettles office (to make video calls to Seattle all day, surrounded by strangers). Not unless they seemed to be being singled out for an illegal reason, like that it was based on their race, sex, religion, disability, or other protected class or that it was retaliation for reporting harassment or discrimination. But if they’re applying the policy evenly to everyone, it’s legal for them to do it. It’s highly likely that people forced out under this policy will be eligible for unemployment benefits because it’s a material change to the location of the job, but the policy itself (including firing people who don’t comply with it) is legal. My contract requires me to be at my job site 15 minutes before the first period. She is “classified” – she cannot be in the classroom alone with students without a certificated teacher present. I don’t know what her contract says as far as start time. Otherwise, she and I have a great working relationship, and she is one of the best aides at my school – I’m lucky to have her. I am reluctant to address it at all, but it seems like she literally doesn’t care that she is late all the time or shrugs it off. Am I making too big a deal about this? Should I just let it go? Can you help me craft some language to use to address this? On the day I wrote this letter, they were nearly 15 minutes late! I don’t know whether you’re making too big a deal out of her lateness — that really depends on the impact on the classroom and your work. If it’s affecting the class or your own ability to do your job, then you’d be right to raise it. But you absolutely aren’t making too big of a deal about her kid’s lateness, because it’s unfair to the rest of your students that they’re being held to a different standard. I don’t think it’s really true that you can’t mark him tardy because he’s with a staff member — because he’s not really with someone who’s acting in their capacity as a staff member at that time; he’s with his parent, just like other kids whose parents make them late. You should be on solid ground explaining that to her; let her know that you can’t continue to excuse his tardiness because it’s not fair to the other kids. If she bristles at that, it’s worth talking to someone above you about how to navigate this in your particular school, given its own policies and politics. 3. Is it legal for a family-owned business not to pay a family member who’s working for them? This is one of those classic “was this situation legal?” questions. It no longer matters as the situation has changed, but I was thinking about it again and wanted some outside input! I’m in a field that requires a tertiary degree (think law, medicine, dentistry, etc.) and one of my friends from school (“Sam”) had parents who both worked in this field. As is pretty common with people in this family situation, Sam went to work for their parents’ business upon graduation. When we were in school, their parents paid for tuition, rent, and all living expenses. When Sam graduated, their parents bought them a small house near the business to live in. For the first few years Sam was working, they did not get paid any salary. Per the parents, any money they made that would be “salary” was just going back to parents to pay off living expenses and the home purchase. They did still get some amount of spending money but basically until they had made enough money to break even, they did not have a paycheck. I think for tax purposes what likely was happening was that paychecks were being written but deposited into parents’ account and then marked off as debt payment somehow. This went on for maybe 2-3 years. None of us really knew what to tell Sam when we found out, and they were not bothered by this arrangement. Their parents have now retired and Sam is now the owner of the business. Plus they also have no student loan debt (rare in our field to not have a huge student loan debt burden) so it did work out nicely for them in the end, but it always felt borderline illegal that they weren’t getting paid? It might have been legal. I’m supposed to book all travel at least six weeks prior to a trip. My next trip is meant to be in six weeks. I’ve been interviewing at New Company and things are going well. I don’t know if I will receive an offer from New Company, but if I do, I would likely have to put my two weeks notice in before my next trip to Current Company. Should I book my next trip now, in accordance with Current Company’s travel policy, knowing there’s a chance I may not be able to go on the trip at all, or (more awkwardly) that I would be going on the trip after I’ve already given my notice? Should I wait for New Company to make a decision and book my travel late? Should I create an excuse and tell Current Company I can’t make it this time? You should book the travel now in accordance with your company’s policy. If you end up taking the other job and can’t go on the trip at all, that’s not a disaster — that’s a pretty normal thing that happens with company travel. It just goes this way sometimes. After all, some travel is booked months ahead of time and people aren’t expected to decline all travel whenever there’s a chance they might not be around for it. Apple Might Turn Siri Into an AI Chatbot to Rival ChatGPT
Last week, Apple finally admitted it will need to team up with Google to finally make good on that contextual Siri promise it made two years ago, which would have allowed the virtual assistant to integrate with content like your texts or emails to answer personal questions and take actions for you. Now, according to a new report, the iPhone company might actually go one step further and turn Siri into a full-fledged AI chatbot—one on par with the likes of ChatGPT, and perhaps even more sophisticated. Currently, Siri has AI implementation, but only technically, and it's certainly underwhelming: You can use it to get tech support on Apple products or shunt questions off to ChatGPT, but otherwise, Siri basically works as it always has. But according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who has reliably reported on insider information at Apple before, the company is finally not only looking to make Siri smarter, but also change the way you interact with it. Currently planned for iOS and macOS 27 under the name "Campos," Siri's new chatbot interface will still be powered by Gemini, but will allow you to both type and talk to Siri, with full continuity between your conversations. This upgrade will be in addition to the overdue features that were already announced. In other words, it'll look something like the chatbot interface from the ChatGPT app or the standalone Gemini app. Yes, you can technically type to Siri right now, but it mostly works like a separate input method, rather than as a full conversation. You can't scroll through your previous questions to Siri or peruse the assistant's previous answers, and if you ask Siri to reference a message you sent it two weeks ago, it'll have no idea what you mean. That's far behind what other AI chatbots offer right now. The update will also apparently further expand Siri's capabilities even beyond the contextual or personalization upgrades that were already revealed. Gurman says that, while the contextual upgrades will be able to pull information from other apps like Messages, the chatbot-style Siri will be "integrated into all of the company's core apps, including ones for mail, music, podcasts, TV, Xcode programming software and photos." Essentially, Siri will have more access to your iPhone than other AI chatbots, and those integrations will go beyond what was previously promised. That could make it more or less appealing to you, depending on your tastes in AI integration. When the new Siri could arriveWith the chatbot interface planned for iOS 27, it's likely to come after the contextual upgrades, rather than at the same time. That's because, as Gurman said previously, those upgrades are set for the spring. He predicts we'll learn more about it during this year's WWDC, which, if it follows the standard set by previous years, will take place in June. The move to turn Siri into a chatbot could come across as a a much-overdue modernization, as Google has already done the same with Gemini over on Android, but it's also a bit of a surprise, as Apple had previously said it did not intend to turn Siri into a "bolt-on chatbot on the side" for Apple Intelligence. But Apple was likely talking about quality of the experience rather than expressing any significant anti-chatbot bias among the development team, meaning the fact that Siri is turning into a chatbot could mean the company is finally happy with the direction it's headed. But it's also possible that the professed skepticism about turning Siri into a chatbot was meant to appeal to AI skeptics in general. Unfortunately, if you're still skeptical about AI, it currently seems like iOS 27 will be a boring update for you, as Gurman indicated the new Siri chatbot will be the "primary new addition" to the operating system. However you feel about it personally, Siri as a full-fledged AI chatbot could seriously upset ChatGPT's market dominance—ironic, given its early integration with Apple Intelligence. Currently, OpenAI has reportedly admitted it's in a Code Red situation, as it is losing market share to Google and introducing ads to bolster its bottom line. If you notice that your roof has obvious damage, or it has leaked recently, applying a layer of roof cement to the affected area is a fast, easy repair that will keep the water out until you can do something more permanent. This Hydration App Tracks Your 'Output' Instead of Your Intake

Did I have one glass of water or two with lunch? Hell if I know. Not to mention that your hydration depends on all the H2O you take in, not just the glasses of plain water. You can hydrate with soup, with Diet Coke, or with slices of watermelon. Most hydration apps forget this, but even if they don’t, that just makes logging even more complicated. That’s why I was intrigued by the P Water app for iPhone and Apple Watch. It tracks exactly what you’d expect from the name. I’ve been using it for about a week, and so far, I'm a fan. I tap a button on my Apple Watch when I’m heading to the bathroom, and between pit stops, I can drink whatever I want without measuring or logging any of it. If it’s been a few hours since my last bathroom trip, the app will prompt me to drink water. This approach means that I get full credit for the water in my soup and Diet Coke, because it’s still hydrating me, and my internal hydration level is still triggering my bathroom trips. I spend a total of about 30 seconds each day thinking about the app, and I measure nothing. This is ideal for me. Why it makes sense to track urination rather than water intakeThe developers of P Water were not the first to think of tracking water output rather than input. You may have noted this approach is sometimes used in medical settings, and as a new parent I remember being asked how many wet diapers my newborn was producing each day. P Water cites research showing that counting up the number of times you urinate per day can give a reasonably good estimate of how hydrated you are. For example, this study on healthy young men concludes that “[Void frequency] is a reliable index of 24-[hour] hydration status” so long as bathroom visits come at a consistent “urgency”—in other words, if you sometimes go when you don’t really have to, but sometimes hold it a long time, your pee count will be less reliable as a hydration indicator. That much is pretty obvious. Tracking output rather than input accounts for not just different sources of water in your diet, but also different hydration needs. For example, the “eight glasses of water a day” rule was never a particularly good one, especially when you consider that people come in different sizes and may have different activity levels. That said, if you have a need to monitor your exact hydration, an app like P Water won’t necessarily do everything you need it to do. Medical providers often ask for specific amounts when they have people do what they call a “voiding diary.” But for a general sense of whether you’re hydrating enough that you’re peeing a normal amount, P Water seems to be a convenient tool. How to use the P Water app (with or without an Apple Watch)While it’s convenient to use P Water on an Apple Watch, it also works as a regular iPhone app. The full app has some convenient actions, like having a “log a pee” option when you long-press the home screen icon or when you swipe down to see Siri suggestions. The next time you’ve got an itchy throat and a stuffy nose, Amazon wants you to describe your symptoms to an AI chatbot deputized to do medicine. On Wednesday, Amazon announced the launch of the new feature, inviting users who subscribe to its healthcare service to interact with an AI assistant for personalized medical advice. The chatbot is available now in the One Medical app, which patients can use to schedule appointments, message their primary care provider and access their medical records. “The U.S. health care experience is fragmented, with each provider seeing only parts of your health puzzle,” Amazon Health Services Senior Vice President Neil Lindsay said in the announcement. “Health AI in the One Medical app brings together all the pieces of your personal health information to give you a more complete picture—helping you understand your health, and supporting you in getting the care you need to get and stay well.” Amazon says that its new Health AI assistant can provide “personalized insights” that use a patient’s lab results, medical history, medication information and other records to paint a full picture of their health. A half-baked launchUnfortunately, the feature's current implementation falls far short of its potential. The most glaring issue: You cannot actually view your workout details once you've started the activity in the app. Strava generates solid, complex, multi-interval workouts—but provides no way to reference them on your watch during your run or ride. You'd have to screenshot the workout beforehand or print it out. For the majority of us athletes who rely on our devices to guide interval training, pace targets, and recovery periods, this renders the feature practically useless. Strava has acknowledged this limitation in a Reddit post, promising that device integration for Garmin and Apple watches is "coming soon." But the timeline for that "soon" is questionable at best. The relationship between Strava and Garmin has reportedly grown frosty following a lawsuit last fall, and there's little incentive for Garmin to prioritize features that primarily benefit Strava's subscription revenue and investor appeal. Without Garmin's cooperation and swift implementation, a significant portion of Strava's serious athlete user base remains locked out of the feature's full utility. Solid workout designOn the bright side, in my opinion, the workouts themselves show promise—though others disagree. The training plans generated appear to take into account individual fitness levels reasonably well. From my testing, the prescribed intervals, pacing, and progression made sense given my current training status and recent activity history. These all make sense for me. Some athletes report receiving workouts that seem disconnected from their actual fitness or goals, while others note that the workout descriptions use non-standard terminology that doesn't align with how most training plans communicate intervals and pacing. Then there's the route generation. In a well-traveled area with dense activity heat maps like New York City, my suggested routes tend to be solid and sensible enough. As always, my personal preferences are to avoid extra crowded streets or sketchy areas, which Strava never seems to take into account. Ultimately, the algorithm benefits from years of crowdsourced data showing which streets, paths, and loops are actually popular with runners and cyclists. However, users in less densely populated areas or regions with sparser Strava usage report wildly inconsistent results. Some routes make no logical sense, sending athletes on inefficient paths or suggesting roads that aren't suitable for the prescribed workout type. The feature's quality appears directly tied to the richness of local Strava data, creating a drastic two-tier experience. And once again: Until I can push the workout and corresponding map to my watch, this feature doesn't mean much to me. The bottom lineIf you ask me, Strava's Instant Workouts feature feels rushed to market, likely timed to generate positive press ahead of the IPO rather than to actually serve athletes. Basic functionality that should have been present at launch—like being able to see your workout in the app or send it to your watch—is mysteriously absent. Google Just Promised No Ads in Gemini (for Now)
A week after OpenAI admitted it will soon start testing ads in ChatGPT, Google has promised that it's not planning to inject ads into Gemini anytime soon. The statement was given to journalist Alex Heath during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said the company doesn't have "any plans" for ads in Gemini. While the statement was fairly brief, it also jibes with a similar quote Hassabis gave to Axios, where he said he was "a little bit surprised" that OpenAI was already introducing ads to ChatGPT. That surprise is understandable, especially because OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in 2024 that he considered ads a "last resort for us as a business model." But looking at the numbers, it makes sense that ChatGPT is getting ads long before Gemini is even thinking of them. Google can afford to hold off on adsWhile Google makes most of its money through showing people ads, it's also able to rely on Search and YouTube to push ads to most of those eyeballs. Meanwhile, OpenAI is pretty much just ChatGPT. As the latter moves to a for-profit model, it now has to put moneymaking first, something it's had trouble doing without relying on traditional internet moneymakers like ads. Google, meanwhile, is already profitable elsewhere, and is able to take its time and use its sheer size to keep Gemini ad-free, at least while it continues to chase market share. Does this mean Google's AI will never get ads? Well, never say never. But it does mean that they're probably not on the horizon—even if Google plans to more aggressively monetize Gemini over the long term, it isn't facing the same kind of time crunch as Altman's company. It remains to be seen whether the presence of ads will push users away from ChatGPT, but the move comes in the wake of significant wins for Gemini and one major loss for ChatGPT. First, Google's Nano Banana image editing model went viral on social media, winning over the general public. Then, Google struck a deal with Apple to put its AI into the iPhone, and it looks like Gemini will be powering Siri for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, ChatGPT reportedly saw a 6% dip in users early last month, following a model update from Gemini—and that was before the introdution of ads. While ChatGPT still seems to be in the lead on total user count, there's evidence that Google is catching up. The divide in strategy seems clear: As OpenAI seeks ways to get more money out of its existing user base, Google can focus on growing its own with new integrations into the products we already use every day. I can't say what the limits of this growth are, but I can say that I rarely go out of my way use AI, yet I've still found myself accidentally relying on Google's AI overviews every now and then. Greenland is turning the MAGA hat into a protest symbol
On January 17, Copenhagen resident Jesper Rabe Tønnesen woke up, packed his cargo bike with 300 red hats, and trekked over to his city’s U.S. embassy, where thousands of citizens were gathering in the street to protest President The President’s proposed takeover of Greenland. By the end of the weekend, those hats had become the dominant symbol of the dissenting movement. For months, The President has insisted that the U.S. should control Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark. But, in recent days, he’s escalated his threat to take over the region, announcing on Truth Social that he would impose additional tariffs on eight allied nations who spoke out against the plan. In response, tens of thousands of protestors have gathered in Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, and Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, to voice their dissent against American occupation of Greenland. Tønnesen, the owner of a vintage store in Copenhagen called McKorman, was one of those protestors. He’s also the designer behind a line of hats parodying The President’s “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) caps. Tønnesen’s hats substitute The President’s famous phrase for the line “Nu det NUUK!” which is a play on the Danish phrase, “Nu det nok,” literally meaning “Now, it’s enough.” Tønnesen’s caps, as well as several similar designs, have emerged as the stand-out visual symbol of the protests, appearing in countless photos of the demonstrations. “The caps were produced as a comedic response to Donald The President thinking he could buy Greenland,” Tønnesen says, “and as a political statement that enough is enough.” Jesper Toennesen “Enough is enough” Tønnesen first created his “Nu det NUUK!” cap last summer, when he ordered 100 copies for his store and sent another 100 to Greenland. The philosophy behind his design, he says, was simple: “The red MAGA hats have become a very visible political symbol, and so it seemed right to also make the anti-MAGA caps red and white too.” Besides that, he adds, red and white are the two colors of both the Greenlandic and Danish flags, adding an additional layer to the parody. Initial sales were slow. Just a few caps were sold in-store, while others were given away. But a week before Saturday’s demonstration, in the wake of The President’s increasing insistence on a Greenland takeover, the hats went viral. In just a few hours, people bought 80 hats, and Tønnesen says he “could have sold hundreds or even thousands more, had they not sold out.” He currently has thousands of new hats on the way from the manufacturer, and plans to donate all profits to the Greenlandic children’s charity Grønlandske Børn. “It’s been a few intense weeks of talking to global media and people wanting to show support by buying the caps,” Tønnesen says. “In times like these it’s important to stand strong in solidarity, and it’s been nice to see people doing that and agreeing that what’s going on is simply intolerable.” How satirical MAGA hats took off in Greenland and Denmark While Tønnesen’s hats have recently shot into the spotlight, he’s not the first Danish designer to satirize the MAGA cap. Indeed, Tønnesen was inspired by an earlier hat created by designer Jens Martin Skibsted. Jens Martin Skibsted Skibsted is the creative mind behind the website c55, which sells a variety of protest-based statement hats. In the past, he’s created multiple hats in support of Ukrainian charities in the midst of the Russian invasion. He says that he was inspired to create something for Greenland after Donald The President Jr. visited the territory back in January 2025, “in protest against America’s ambition to assert control over the island.” His cap is called the Kalaallit, which is the name of the Greenlandic Inuit in their language, Kalaallisut. It features the slogan “Make America Go Away,” paired with the Greenlandic flag on one side. “While it playfully echoes The President’s slogan, the design is distinct,” the hat’s online listing reads. “The red and white colors reflect the Greenlandic flag, and the typeface, DS 737, is based on the official Danish signage typeface, originally released in 1954 by Dansk Standard as ‘Danish Standard no. 737’.” Skibsted says the hat is made in partnership with the Greenlandic NGO Uagut, which is dedicated to promoting Greenlanders’ wellbeing in Denmark. Since initially handing out his caps for free last spring in the Greenlandic city Sisimiut, Skibsted has created three more iterations of the hat, each honoring some aspect of Greenlandic heritage (including one white version of the cap, which he says was added after “MAGA media” digitally erased the original caps’ text to resemble actual MAGA hats). Like Tønnesen, he passed out 200 copies of his original cap at the Copenhagen protest. He says sales have recently spiked, as awareness of The President’s threats against the territory have reached a much larger audience. “It’s become very international, because obviously very few people in the international community agree that it’s okay just to take over a foreign territory,” Skibsted says. “A lot of people want to stand behind the Greenlanders, and also, by proxy, the Danes.” View the full article
