While homebuyers and home sellers still see headlines telling them it’s a seller’s market and national home prices are reaching all-time highs, a deeper look reveals that several regional housing markets have shifted, giving homebuyers some power. During the Pandemic Housing Boom, from summer 2020 to spring 2022, the number of active homes for sale in most housing markets plummeted as homebuyer demand quickly absorbed almost everything that came up for sale. Fast-forward to the current housing market, and the places where active inventory has rebounded to 2019 levels (due to strained affordability suppressing buyer demand) are now the very places where homebuyers hold the most power. At the end of April 2025, national active housing inventory for sale was still 16% below April 2019 levels. However, more and more regional markets are surpassing that threshold. This list is growing. At the end of January 2025, 41 of these 200 major markets were back above pre-pandemic 2019 inventory levels. At the end of February 2025, 44 of these 200 major markets were back above pre-pandemic 2019 inventory levels. These areas were among the nation’s top pandemic boomtowns, having experienced significant home price growth during the pandemic housing boom, which stretched housing fundamentals far beyond local income levels. When pandemic-fueled migration slowed and mortgage rates spiked, markets like Cape Coral, Florida, and San Antonio, Texas, faced challenges as they had to rely on local incomes to sustain frothy home prices. The housing market softening in these areas was further accelerated by the abundance of new home supply in the pipeline across the Sun Belt. Builders in these regions are often willing to reduce prices or make other affordability adjustments to maintain sales. These adjustments in the new construction market also create a cooling effect on the resale market, as some buyers who might have opted for an existing home shift their focus to new homes where deals are still available. In contrast, many Northeast and Midwest markets were less reliant on pandemic migration and have less new home construction in progress. With lower exposure to that demand shock, active inventory in these Midwest and Northeast regions has remained relatively tight, keeping the advantage in the hands of home sellers. Lego just turned Keith Haring’s iconic dancing figures into a buildable piece of wall art
Lego’s new building kit will turn your wall into an ode to ’80s graffiti art. The latest in Lego’s art-inspired sets is a customizable brick-built version of Keith Haring’s dancing figures, an instantly recognizable motif of five breakdancing stick figures articulated in Haring’s iconic pop art style. The kit comes with 1,773 pieces, can be mounted on stands or affixed to a wall, and stands at just over a foot tall. It retails for $119.99 and is set to hit Lego’s website and land in stores on May 15. In recent months, Lego has been working to build out a more extensive catalog of eye candy kits aimed at adults, ranging from a Lego-based version of Leonadro da Vinci’s Mona Lisa to a detailed re-creation of Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers and even a modern version of Art Hokusai’s 1831 woodblock print The Great Wave. The Dancing Figures kit is one of Lego’s first forays into a more contemporary artist’s work, and it’s also the company’s first art kit that’s specifically designed to be configured by a group. Designing dancing figures for Lego The Dancing Figures kit might be one of the most modern motifs to join Lego’s art repertoire, but somehow the characters’ new life as a Lego set feels inevitable. That’s probably because since Haring’s death in 1990, his art has appeared on everything from chess sets to Dr. Martens and inflatable home decor. During the height of his career in 1980s New York City, Haring’s greatest love was street art and graffiti, and he famously preferred to make art that would be viewable by the masses rather than tucked inside a gallery. He also arguably spearheaded the commodification of his own work through a merch outlet called Haring’s Pop Shop, which sold buttons, stickers, and posters for ultra-low prices. At the time, he faced a healthy dose of backlash from the fine art world for reproducing his own art commercially. Since then, though, his work has become so ubiquitous that echoes of it persist in fashion design, graffiti, and the same gallery spaces that once criticized him. Milan Madge, master model designer at Lego, led the design of the new Dancing Figures kit. Madge says his team worked in collaboration with the Keith Haring Foundation to bring the motif to life, including by accessing archival materials held by the foundation to “stay true to his unique style.” “Getting to choose Keith Haring’s Dancing Figures was a wonderful choice to have,” Madge says. “The original piece perfectly captures the spirit of joy, motion, and connection that defines much of his work. The energetic, rhythmic forms express a sense of celebration and unity, radiating a vibrant, lively energy. Using Lego bricks as a medium was also a great fit, and it presented a fun challenge to see if we could replicate the fine lines of the original artwork within the Lego brick format.” In many ways, the colorful, playful style of both Haring and Lego made this the ideal collaboration. Still, meshing the two presented some design quandaries—namely, how to capture the dynamic movement of Haring’s oft-depicted dancing figures in a kit that follows a precise structure and relies on a selection of base shapes. Ultimately, the Lego team decided to lean into the “hidden geometry” that underpins the Lego brick. “The big leap we took was removing the background from the characters and making them freestanding sculptures. That really unlocked the potential of the Lego system in terms of geometry,” Madge says. “In order to capture the dynamism of Haring’s work, we started angling parts of the model, a figure’s arm or leg, or in the case of the blue breakdancing figure, their entire lower body. The angles allowed us to both capture the forms of Keith Haring’s dancing figures and, importantly, the consistent bold black line which was a staple of his style.” Adult book clubs and crafting circles, rejoice! The actual format of Lego’s Dancing Figures kit is also meant as an homage to Haring’s style. Why you should be more willing to admit when you don’t know something
How many times have you been asked by someone at work whether you know about a particular project, are familiar with a specific concept, or know a person? Chances are, you have answered “yes” to that question a few times when you did not, in fact, know what they were talking about. There are several reasons why people will say the know things they don’t. For one thing, there is a desire in conversations to be cooperative with your partner. When they ask a question, the default cooperative answer is usually “yes,” so you often go with that default. On top of that, it you may feel deficient if you’re lacking knowledge or awareness that someone else has. Despite these temptations to overstate what you know, there are good reasons to admit when you lack the information you have been asked about. Opportunities for mentorship Admitting that there is something (or someone) you don’t know creates a vulnerability. You have demonstrated a potential weakness to someone else. However, it also opens up a chance for someone to teach you something you don’t know. Most colleagues would like to be helpful, and when they know you have a gap in your knowledge they might be willing to teach you. This willingness to admit ignorance to others also enables you to be more honest with yourself. You can’t begin to fill gaps in your knowledge until you do a reasonable inventory of what you do and don’t know. This honest appraisal opens you up to the lessons that others may have for you. It may also help you to recognize gaps in your understanding of projects going on at work and people you need to know. All of this is likely to make you more effective in the long run. Building trust Often, you don’t want to appear to have a gap in your knowledge, because you believe that will decrease your value in the eyes of others. But merely saying you know something or someone doesn’t have much of an impact on how other people view you. It’s your ability to use knowledge or to engage your social network that provides value. In fact, your willingness to admit what you don’t know often increases people’s trust in you. When people know that you are willing to be clear when you don’t have knowledge or connections, then they are better able to rely on you for the knowledge you claim. In general, owning your limitations gives other people more confidence in your abilities and your work. Setting an example A true learning organization is one in which people strive to improve their knowledge and skills. When you admit what you don’t know, you also open up the opportunity to learn something. It’s a great example for the people around you when you hear about something new, acknowledge that it is new to you, and then go out and find out more. This cycle of admitting a lack of knowledge and getting educated is particularly important for senior leaders in an organization to go through. People across an organization are looking to leaders to set the tone for the way the organization functions. When senior leaders portray themselves as knowing everything, then they are treating knowledge and skill gaps as a weakness rather than an opportunity. That attitude will trickle down in ways that limit the learning of all team members. Bonus: Flip the default on questions If you really want to know what other people know, you should ask your questions differently. Rather than saying, “Do you know . . .?” which has the cooperative answer “yes,” start your questions with things like “I find a lot of people are confused by, . . .” or “Something that took me a long time to understand is . . .” These phrases create the presumption that the cooperative answer is to admit that you have a gap in your knowledge. And are these tests even legit? You want to showcase that you’re right for the job, and some of the questions seem like no-brainers. For example, if you’re asked to assess statements such as “I like to learn new skills” by choosing from “strongly agree,” “agree,” “neither agree nor disagree,” “disagree,” “strongly disagree,” you’ll likely choose “strongly agree.” Others are more nuanced, such as being asked to complete this sentence: “When I set goals at work, I choose . . .” Objectives I feel confident I can attain Objectives that feel challenging but attainable Objectives that are part of a bigger goal Objectives that would make me feel good to achieve Um . . . all the above? It also extends over to behavioral or personality assessments that employers give.” What Happens When You Game Tests Pretending on an assessment sets you up for problems later if you tilt your answers toward what you think the employer might be looking for but they’re the opposite of your true self. It’s the ultimate career self-sabotage, says Poepsel. “If you actually get the job, that’s almost the worst thing that could happen,” he says. “Now the types of tasks that they bring to you are going to be for this person that you’re not.” When you land a job through falsified test results, you could feel like you must curtail certain parts of your personality that are natural for you, which could cause stress, anxiety, and eventual burnout. In addition, you will need to expend a tremendous amount of energy to do the types of tasks that weren’t a great fit for you in the first place. For example, if you present yourself as detail-oriented and you’re not, you’ll need to bring a level of concentration to your role that’s unnatural to you. “When that happens, especially for early career people, imposter syndrome begins to set in, and then performance begins to take a hit,” says Poepsel. “All of a sudden, you’re having those difficult conversations with your employer, and it’s really on you, because you decided that getting the job was more important than being a great fit for the job. It’s like walking around in the wrong shoes, thinking this is what the employer wants me to wear. But wearing shoes that are too tight is not a comfortable way to go through your workday.” What Employers Need to Do While it’s important that candidates answer questions honestly, employers have a responsibility in how they use assessments, too. Their misuse can be detrimental to the company in the long run. Poepsel recommends using a live interview to cross-check a candidate’s answers. For example, if an employer needs someone detail-oriented for a job, they may look for assessment answers that demonstrate formality and compliance. A behavioral affirming interview question might be, “Tell me about a time when you’ve had to bring a tremendous amount of detail orientation to a project that you’re working on.” Someone who authentically has these traits should be able to provide a detailed answer to the question. Assessments are just one tool employers can use to find their next great employee, and answering behavior test questions honestly shouldn’t necessarily exclude someone from getting a job offer, says Poepsel. “Ultimately, the manager owns the gaps,” he says. “If they’re hiring somebody for a role that’s highly detail-oriented, and you’re detail-oriented but not super detail-oriented, that’s totally fine. The manager can provide coaching, training, tooling, and support to overcome that natural gap. We don’t need a 10-out-of-10 person. If somebody’s an eight out of 10, they just need different types of resources and support.” View the full article

How some ‘Star Wars’ ideas became real-life science
Just 48 short years ago, movie director George Lucas used the phrase “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away” as the opening to the first Star Wars movie, later labeled Episode IV: A New Hope. But at least four important aspects of the Star Wars saga are much closer—both in time and space—than Lucas was letting on. One, the ability to add blue food coloring to milk, was possible even at the time the first film came out. But in 2024, Star Wars-themed blue milk became periodically available in grocery stores. And we, an environmental health engineer and a civil engineer, know there are at least three more elements of these ancient, distant Lucas stories that might seem like science fiction but are, in fact, science reality. Moisture farming In that first movie, Episode IV, Luke Skywalker’s Uncle Owen was a farmer on the planet of Tatooine. He farmed water from air in the middle of a desert. It might sound impossible, but it’s exactly what experts discussed at the second International Atmospheric Water Harvesting Summit hosted by Arizona State University in March 2025. Each day, a human needs to consume about the equivalent of 0.8 gallons of water (3 liters). With more than 8 billion people living on the planet, that means engineers need to produce nearly 2.6 trillion gallons (10 trillion liters) of clean drinking water every year. Taken globally, rainfall would be enough, but it’s distributed very unevenly—including landing in the oceans, where it immediately becomes too salty to drink safely. Deserts, which cover about one-fifth of the Earth’s land area, are home to about 1 billion people. Researchers at places such as Berkeley have developed solar-powered systems that can produce clean drinking water from thin air. In general, they use a material that traps water molecules from the air within its structure and then use sunlight to condense that water out of the material and into drinkable liquid. But there is still a ways to go before they are ready for commercial distribution and available to help large numbers of people. Space debris When the second Death Star was destroyed in Return of the Jedi, it made a huge mess, as you would expect when blowing to smithereens an object at least 87 miles across (140 kilometers). But the movie’s mythology helpfully explains that a hyperspace wormhole briefly opened, scattering much of the falling debris across the galaxy. As best as anyone can tell, a hyperspace wormhole has never appeared near Earth. And even if such a thing existed or happened, humans might not have the technology to chuck all our trash in there anyway. So we’re left with a whole lot of stuff all around us, including in space. According to the website Orbiting Now, in late April 2025 there were just over 12,000 active satellites orbiting the planet. All in all, the United States and other space-faring nations are trying to keep track of nearly 50,000 objects orbiting Earth. And there are millions of fragments of space debris too small to be observed or tracked. Just as on Earth’s roads, space vehicles crash into each other if traffic gets too congested. But unlike the debris that falls to the road after an Earth crash, all the bits and pieces that break off in a space crash fly away at speeds of several thousand miles per hour (10,000 to 30,000 kph) and can then hit other satellites or spacecraft that cross their paths. This accumulation of space debris is creating an increasing problem. With more satellites and spacecraft heading to orbit, and more stuff up there moving around that might hit them, space travel is becoming more like flying the Millennium Falcon through an asteroid field every day. Engineers at NASA, the European Space Agency, and other space programs are exploring a variety of technologies—including a net, a harpoon, and a laser—to remove the more dangerous pieces of space junk and clean up the space environment. The Force itself To most Earth audiences, the Force was a mysterious energy field created by life that binds the galaxy together. That is until 1999, when Episode I: The Phantom Menace revealed that the Force came from midi-chlorians, a microscopic, sentient life form that lives within every living cell. To biologists, midi-chlorians sound suspiciously similar to mitochondria, the powerhouse of our cells. The current working hypothesis is that mitochondria emerged from bacteria that lived within cells of other living things. And mitochondria can communicate with other life forms, including bacteria. There are many different kinds of mitochondria, and medical professionals are learning how to transplant mitochondria from one cell to another just like they transplant organs from one person’s body to another. Maybe one day a transplant procedure could help people find the light side of the Force and turn away from the dark side. May the Fourth—and the Force—be with you. Daniel B. AI tools from Google, LinkedIn, and Salesforce could help you find your next job
Sometimes, you need to shake things up in your career. Maybe the job isn’t as fulfilling anymore. Maybe changing circumstances are pushing you toward a new path. Either way, figuring out what to do next can be a challenge. Increasingly, artificial intelligence is helping people explore their next steps—even when they’re unsure themselves. Chatbots like ChatGPT can offer some guidance, provided you know how to phrase your questions. But several companies have developed specialized tools that focus specifically on this issue. Google is leading the pack with its Career Dreamer. Described as “a playful way to explore career possibilities with AI,” it’s a tool that anyone can use. To get started with Career Dreamer, you’ll develop a “career identity statement,” which outlines your skills and experiences. After sharing your current job, the AI will ask follow-up questions about what that role involved. You can also add details about your educational background and any careers, industries, or fields that interest you. Career Dreamer then suggests potential career paths based on your input. (For example, among its alternate career suggestions for me were communications/public relations specialist, communications professor, and market research analyst—along with several jobs in the reporting field.) Hovering your mouse over each suggested field provides information about the type of degree typically required, the experience you’ll generally need, a description of the job, and—if you click through—the average salary. Find something that looks intriguing? You can click through to a list of local job opportunities or jump over to the Gemini AI tool to craft a résumé or cover letter. LinkedIn, meanwhile, offers the Next Role Explorer for users whose companies subscribe to its Learning Hub. That tool showcases potential opportunities within the company, suggests skills employees should develop, and shows how many openings exist in each role. It also displays the percentage of people who have successfully transitioned from the employee’s current role to the new one. AI, for that service, acts as a career coach, offering recommended courses and career paths. It also helps employees stay on track as they work toward acquiring the skills needed for a new role. At Salesforce, the company rolled out Career Connect last September—an internal talent marketplace that uses AI to help employees create personalized career paths tailored to their skills and aspirations. The tool is embedded in Salesforce’s Slack workflow. Employees can view roles they’re currently qualified for, as well as positions where their skills are easily transferable. If a job catches their interest, they can apply directly within Slack. Early results, Salesforce says, have been extremely positive: Ninety-one percent of the roles that were filled went to participants in the Career Connect pilot program who discovered those opportunities through the tool. During the three-month trial, 28% of participants applied for jobs via the platform. Given the ongoing fears that AI will take people’s jobs—freelance positions have already seen a 21% drop in demand—it’s somewhat reassuring to see it also being used to help people find them.
