digs about working from home, coworker doesn’t check references because “everyone just lists their friends,” and more
It’s four answers to four questions. Here we go… 1. How can I manage digs about remote working and return-to-office? I’m a woman in my 60s, and before Covid I was doing a long, multi‑leg commute five days a week. Working primarily from home has dramatically improved my health, energy, productivity, and ability to manage everyday life. However, now my workplace is requiring us to be in the office more, and I’m not sure how to handle a few friends who make unsupportive comments about it. Most of my friends understand and are considerate, but a small group repeatedly dismisses my concerns. They tell me to retire, “suck it up,” or insist that office work is better for collaboration and socializing, even though that doesn’t reflect the reality of my workplace. And the commute is the biggest factor, and they know it. What makes this more frustrating is that these particular friends either don’t work at all or are self‑employed and mostly work from home themselves. Yet they expect me to accommodate plans that would require me to leave work early, travel late at night before early office days, or take time off. They’re unwilling to adjust plans or meet halfway, and their comments often include digs about people “slacking off” or mothers (not parents) doing school pickups. If I did resign, and took the financial hit while job‑hunting, I doubt they’d adjust their expectations or activity choices to accommodate my new budget. I’ve tried explaining the real impact that increased commuting has on my health, time, and finances, and that I can’t reduce the burden without taking a significant financial hit. I’ve corrected misconceptions, avoided the topic, and changed the subject when they bring it up, but the comments continue. I now even dread being asked what days I’ll be in the office, because what used to be a simple scheduling question reliably turns into a rant about remote workers. I sometimes feel tempted to snap back with something unkind, but I don’t want to go there. I can distance myself from these particular friends if I need to, but it’s made me wonder how people who deal with similar comments from relatives manage it, especially when they want to maintain those relationships and genuinely enjoy family gatherings. They just want to show up and have a pleasant time without bracing for Uncle or Aunt X to take a dig at them. I’m looking for better ways anyone in this situation can respond when these conversations keep happening despite clear discomfort. First, why is this group of friends so focused on this topic in the first place? If you’re the one bringing it up, you should stop — for whatever reason, they’re not the right audience for it — and if it’s them, tell them you need a break from it. But also, they don’t sound like great friends. It’s one thing to make a few out-of-touch comments because they just haven’t thought it through, but if they’re the ones initiating the topic, you’ve explained the situation, and the comments haven’t stopped and they’re unwilling to adjust any plans to allow for the reality that you have an on-site job and a commute? The issue is the friends. But with people you can’t escape, like family members, the easiest strategy is to avoid talking about work altogether, or quickly change the topic if it comes up. “Ugh, I can’t do any more work talk right now — tell me all about how the hemorrhoid surgery was” and “Yeah, what are you gonna do — so how are the kids doing?” should become your staples (even if — and perhaps especially if — there isn’t actually any hemorrhoid surgery coming up). 2. My coworker doesn’t check references because “everyone just lists their friends” I’m a manager at a smallish firm (i.e., no dedicated HR team for hiring). A colleague of mine at the same level has a couple openings on his team, and in a recent conversation told me he “never checks references, because people always just put their friends down anyways.” Yikes! I was caught off guard by his comment in the moment, and looking back I’m curious how you’d respond to this. I think some of the issue might be how he conducts reference checks in the first place — I’ve heard it’s best to ask open-ended questions about working style, or whether a candidate is more X or more Y, versus asking whether their skills are any good or other questions where you might just get a “oh yeah, they’re great!” kind of response. I’ve also heard it can be good practice to reach out to former (not current!) companies on a candidate’s resume directly to see if there’s any info they can provide outside the provided reference list. I’m lucky enough that my team has had very little turnover since I’ve been here (so it’s been a minute since I’ve had to check references), whereas my colleague is often hiring. First, it’s categorically not true that most people just put down their friends. Most people don’t. Occasionally someone does, and a good reference checker screens for that by getting specific information about how the reference knows the candidate, what their role was when they worked together and how their jobs intersected, and how closely they worked together. Second, I suspect you’re right that this guy hasn’t conducted effective reference checks, if he’s conducted them all. (And yes, you are also right about asking more open-ended questions, including ones that don’t make the “right” answer obvious.) He also sounds like he sees references as pass/fail, when in fact they should be a lot more nuanced than that; someone could receive a glowing reference that makes you realize they’re not actually the strongest match for the job you’re hiring for (such as a reference who raves about how fast-paced and entrepreneurial the person is when you need someone who will thrive in a job that requires a slower, more deliberate pace and adherence to a precise structure). As for how to respond, you could talk to him about your own experience checking references and how you’ve found it helpful … or you might just show him this! 3. Should I let my great boss know I’m thinking about leaving? I have a weird gift: pretty quickly I become the “right hand (wo)man” of my boss in every place I’ve worked. Generally, this means that they trust me, confide in me (not inappropriately, but they may share some behind the scenes information), rely on me for feedback about decisions that they’re thinking of making, have conversations with me about kids, life, etc. I think this stems both from the fact that I’m a pretty good conversationalist and generally provide solid analytical advice, and because I’ve never abused any trust so they know I won’t gossip about things I’ve learned from these conversations. In all those cases, I’ve genuinely liked my bosses, and it has created relationships that are partially friendship-based, with them going to bat for me whenever I needed it. However, when I’ve decided to leave because I found a better opportunity that aligns with my career goals, all my bosses have had a hard time not being personally offended that I “dropped a bomb” on them. None of them were unprofessional about it, but they were clearly hurt and confused (like starting a sentence with “I can’t believe you didn’t talk to me first, we could have worked something out…”, only to realize what they said and backtrack to “I guess you can’t really share with your boss that you’re thinking of leaving”). In all those instances, even if I had shared my intentions with them, there was really nothing they could have done — my next professional step clearly involved leaving. Now I’ve been at the same place for four years, and I’m looking into finding a more senior role (with higher compensation), which isn’t currently available where I am. My boss and I are very close, she pushes for me to get big projects and recognition within the company, trusts me as her inner circle, and would be blindsided if I left. While the role I am looking for doesn’t currently exist here, I’m not 100% sure that it can’t be created, if absolutely necessary. Do you recommend that I broach the subject of leaving with my boss before I find another job and announce that I’m leaving? The advantage would be to give her a chance to try and create the role that I want (with commensurate compensation) and avoid blindsiding her after many instances where she went above and beyond for me. Ideally, I’d love to be able to stay under such terms. The drawback of course, is showing my cards before I have an outside offer on the table. My understanding has always been that it’s usually not a good idea to get what you want by threatening to leave. How do I navigate this? Yes, in a situation where you’re highly valued by your boss and have a strong relationship, it can make sense to put your cards a bit on the table. It’s not about threatening to leave; it’s about sharing with her that you’re starting to think about your next step and would love to be able to stay. So the framing isn’t “I’m starting to job search and will leave if you don’t create a role for me a role doing ABC.” It’s more: “I’m starting to think about where I want my career to take me long-term, and I’m wondering if the company would ever consider creating a role like ABC. I would love to stay here long-term, and I think that work would benefit us in XYZ ways.” You don’t need to spell out “and I will leave if the answer is no” — she’s going to be able to read between the lines and understand what you’re saying. Related: how to ask my company to pay me more if they want me to stay 4. Is my boss BS’ing me about why a contractor is earning so much more than me? My boss has put me on an infernal hellscape of a group project, and I am the only person regularly working on the project who’s on staff — everyone else is a contractor. One of the contractors, “Fergus,” was brought on to essentially be a second me. Our jobs on the project are extremely similar, though I have a few added responsibilities — let’s say we are both designing the product, sourcing materials for the product, and building the product, but I am also testing the product. Fergus is currently negotiating his contract, and I just found out that he’s asking for $30,000 more a year than I’m currently paid. While it’s extremely unlikely that he’ll get that, I talked to some of our past contractors, and I think it’s quite likely that my boss will pay Fergus over $10,000 more per year than I’m paid, even though we will be doing the same job on this group project and I will also be expected to keep performing my other duties outside of the group project. I talked to my boss about this and said that because Fergus and I have the same duties, I would expect to be paid at least as much as him. My boss said that negotiating around this was premature, since the group project is still in its early stages. However, he then added that contractors are often paid more than staff employees because they don’t get benefits and don’t “benefit from the predictability” of being a salaried employee somewhere. Is this even a little bit a thing? I can’t say I trust my boss to be honest about this, and my benefits package is so small that even if I factored it in, Fergus would still be getting paid more than me. Also it’s not like Fergus is some super sought after rockstar who we have to pay a lot to retain—it really just seems like the going rate for contractors went up, and my workplace is avoiding raising salaries to match them. How would you suggest I negotiate around this? This is 100% a thing! Independent contractors are typically paid significantly more than employees (often around twice as much) because they’re responsible for their own payroll taxes (including the employer portion that your company pays for you if you’re an employee), as well as not getting health insurance or paid time off. If they were paid the same as employees, their take-home pay after all those things were deducted would be significantly less than yours, and that’s before getting into inherently having less stability than employees. $30,000 more than an employee isn’t outside the norm. You can still negotiate if you believe your work warrants more pay than you’re getting now. You just shouldn’t base it on what contractors are getting. The future of AI is already in your hands
Artificial intelligence is moving into everything. It’s in the phone in your pocket, the watch on your wrist, the TV on your wall, and the appliances in your kitchen. As companies race to build AI wearables and ambient assistants, there’s a risk we skip a crucial step: grounding this future in the devices people already trust and use constantly. For most of us, that foundation is the smartphone. Smartphones sit at the center of daily life, helping with communication, payments, creativity, navigation, entertainment, and more. About 91% of Americans own one, according to Pew Research. They are personal, always with us, and deeply embedded in our routines. If AI is to become truly integrated into life, it must prove itself here first, not as a feature, but as part of the system’s core architecture. JUDGMENT OVER CAPABILITY The first wave of AI innovation expanded capability. AI models became faster, larger, and more powerful. But capability alone doesn’t create better experiences. The next phase will be defined by judgment. Judgment is AI’s ability to prioritize correctly, interpret context and timing, and act with restraint, knowing not just how to help, but when. On a device you use hundreds of times a day, poor judgment is immediately obvious. A meeting reminder that pops up during a video call or an “urgent” notification triggered by a trivial email doesn’t feel smart; it feels disruptive. Useful AI must read signals across messages, apps, location, and routines without overwhelming attention. It should surface the one flight update you need and hold back on 20 promotional emails you don’t. That requires intelligence at the operating level, where the system can weigh context across functions instead of acting like a series of isolated tricks. Capability may impress, but judgment is what builds trust. And that trust is what people will carry into every other AI-powered device in their lives. HELPFUL AUTONOMY, BUILT IN As AI matures, it should move from reactive response to helpful autonomy. Instead of waiting for prompts, systems can carry tasks forward, such as suggesting the fastest route to a meeting as traffic builds. Those kinds of experiences don’t live inside a single app. They depend on coordination across calendars, communications, services, and devices. Done well, this kind of autonomy reduces friction and absorbs complexity in the background. Done poorly, it erodes trust. That’s why these experiences must be designed with discipline, so AI acts in ways that are predictable, aligned with user expectations, and easy to override. PRIVACY AND SECURITY ARE ESSENTIAL The more AI is woven into daily life, the more essential trust becomes. Our devices hold almost everything about us: conversations, photos, financial details, and health data. People aren’t just worried about hackers; they’re worried about their information being over-collected, combined, or misused without their knowledge. Protection cannot be an afterthought, or settings users must hunt down. It must be built into the architecture itself—keeping sensitive data on the device whenever possible, with clear data practices and proactive safeguards. Strong coordination across devices without strong protection is fragile. But when AI is implemented responsibly across phones, wearables, TVs, and appliances, with privacy and security built in, it earns the confidence required for everyday use. THE NEW BAR FOR INTELLIGENT DESIGN We’re entering an era of ambient intelligence, where AI stretches beyond any single screen. Glasses, wearables, home systems, and devices we haven’t imagined yet will all play important roles. But these experiences will only feel seamless if they are anchored in devices people already rely on. The smartphone is not the entire story of AI’s future. It is the foundation. It’s where systems must demonstrate judgment, helpful autonomy, and secure, trustworthy behavior under real-world conditions. For AI to continue to move to an everyday life, it must reach people where they are, work across ecosystems rather than isolated silos, and build confidence gradually through consistent, dependable value. If we get this right, the broader ecosystem can truly come together. The question isn’t whether AI will become more ambient. It’s whether we design it to be a partner that genuinely lightens the load—or adds another layer of complexity. Yoonie Joung is president and CEO of Samsung Electronics North America. Empty nester women: The new targeting market?
There’s a tremendous, ageless opportunity hiding in plain sight, but marketers need to look through a different lens to see it. Right now, there are some 35 million U.S. empty nester women, as I calculate it, and a growing percentage of them are single. They aren’t retreating into rest and relaxation; they are stepping out to exult in activities they finally have the time, money, and motivation to pursue. Historically, marketers have largely overlooked this demographic. Or, if they address this market, it’s only for margin and share growth. That’s the wrong framework. The real opportunity isn’t just about capturing their spending power, it’s about recognizing a profound market failure and taking the opportunity to right it by improving women’s lives. It’s time to talk about how we earn a share of life instead of a share of wallet. As Nina Rossello, our SVP of strategy at A&G put it, “Ginger Rogers famously noted that as women, we do the same dance, but we do it backwards and in heels. We’re tired of having to work twice as hard for the applause. We want products, services, and brands that are built for us, so we don’t have to overcome a system built for men in order to reap its benefits.” ACKNOWLEDGEMENT, NOT VALIDATION Empty nester women aren’t looking for validation; they are looking for acknowledgement. They don’t need brands to fix them. They need brands to fix the systems that were built with men, couples, and younger adults in mind. Smart brands will stop charging women, particularly single empty nester women, a tax just to participate and will start actively removing the barriers to entry. Take the travel industry: 78% of North American women 50+ cite the “single supplement” (a premium charged for not sharing lodging) as a barrier to traveling. Given that an estimated 84% of solo travelers are women, the double-occupancy standard isn’t just a turnoff, it’s an insult. When brands eliminate this friction, the market responds. The Adventure Travel Association has seen a surge in travel companies focused on women travelers, driven heavily by the 50+ demographic. Companies like Girls’ Guide To The World—which is seeing 25-30% annual booking growth—built its pricing model on single occupancy by default, overtly stating that they never charge a single supplement. They didn’t just target a demographic; they reconfigured a faulty model. THE FAMILY CENTER Contrary to the term, “empty nester,” women are frequently still at the center of extended family conversations and activities, providing a financial and functional safety net for adult children and directly influencing grandchildren. They lead the multi-generational group chats. They take the grandkids on vacation, doing 75% of the planning and footing 84% of the bill. Rather than just viewing them as shadow influencers to monetize, marketers should ask how we can support them. What emotional, financial, and functional pressures are adult children placing on them? Is “mom guilt” still driving their decisions or even intensifying with age? By understanding these dynamics, brands can design solutions that genuinely relieve their burdens rather than exploit their generosity. Ease the friction for a grandmother planning a multi-generational trip or create experiences that fulfill a mother’s longing to connect and bond with her adult children. VITALITY, NOT VANITY Our industry too easily defines the actions of empty nester women as a retreat into vanity or a longing for the past. But whether they are investing in aesthetic procedures or new wellness tech, the motivation is less about clinging to the past than refusing to be underestimated in the present. These women aren’t sitting on the sidelines. They are starting businesses, leading trends, and planning complex multi-generational adventures. They are in the middle of their most active, empowered years, and they want the focus on their vitality and value, not their age. To understand who they are now, consider who they were before the responsibilities of adulthood piled up. What is the new coming of age story they have the space and resources to write now? Then spend a few hours in their lives. What’s getting in the way? What does it feel like to move in their bodies? Tools like MIT’s AGNES suit (Age Gain Now Empathy System) allow a 30-year-old marketer to viscerally feel the stiffness and vision loss of a 75-year-old. Once you understand how a pill bottle or a product label is a barrier, you realize that inclusive design isn’t just a niche service, it’s a market expander. When you solve a friction point for anybody, you can build a fundamentally better product for everybody. When brands create with this audience in mind, empty nester women adopt new products and technology more readily than marketers are conditioned to assume. Just look to QVC. By integrating its “Age of Possibility” Q50 collective (featuring Martha Stewart and Queen Latifah) with a broader TikTok Shop affiliate strategy, the company drove a 30% year-over-year surge in targeted social and streaming revenue, acquiring over 100,000 new customers through TikTok in a single quarter. QVC didn’t find a new market; they just built a better door for the one that was already there. Empty nester women offer a massive, multi-generational opportunity, but capturing it requires a fundamental shift in perspective. We need to stop marketing to demographic categories, treating groups outside of the 25-50 core as secondary considerations. This segment is exceptionally savvy, have earned their grit, and spent much of their lives navigating systems built for everyone else. When you take the time to truly understand and solve for empty nester women, you aren’t just catering to a niche, you are proving your baseline value to your entire audience. But if I’ve learned one thing, they won’t sit around waiting for you. So, either start building solutions or get out of their way. Andrew Graff is CEO of A&G (Allen & Gerritsen). Leading Thoughts for March 26, 2026
IDEAS shared have the power to expand perspectives, change thinking, and move lives. Here are two ideas for the curious mind to engage with: I. Jenna Nicholas on hope: “Real hope is not a spectator state of mind but rather a passionate mobilization to get up and join forces with the world around us. This kind of hope dares us to transcend fear and indifference by taking deliberate steps toward building a better future through our relationships and our work. Optimism is not just a nice feeling; it’s a courageous pledge to action, a belief in the possibility of change, and a summons to support solutions of hope-whether they’re grand and sweeping or just a tiny next step in the direction we want to go. This kind of hope keeps us going and inspires those around us.” Source: Enlightened Bottom Line: Exploring the Intersection of Spirituality, Business, and Investing II. Jane Goodall on hope: “Hope is often misunderstood. People tend to think that it is simply passive wishful thinking: I hope something will happen, but I’m not going to do anything about it. This Budget Fitness Watch From Amazfit Is Only $80 Right Now
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. This year’s Amazon Big Spring Sale doesn’t have too many deep discounts on premium watches, but we are seeing some sweet deals on budget models. One worth looking at is Amazfit’s Active 2 Sport, on sale today for $79.99. It’s a fitness watch with a solid feature set, and it will cost you half the price of other brands’ entry-level watches. Amazfit Active 2 Sport $79.99 at Amazon $99.99 Save $20.00 Get Deal Get Deal $79.99 at Amazon $99.99 Save $20.00 Amazfit watches keep impressing meI’ll confess that when I first heard of Amazfit, I assumed they were some kind of Amazon fitness brand. But there’s no relation—the Amazfit brand is owned by a company called Zepp. And Zepp has quietly been making solid fitness devices for years, including some unexpected ones. It has the best Whoop alternative (the Amazfit Helio Strap, also branded as Core), it’s working on a meal-tracking camera, and it’s made several impressive forays into the world of high-end adventure watches. I liked Amazfit's T-Rex 3 Pro when I reviewed it: nice hardware, ambitious software features, but ultimately somewhat clunky execution. My colleague Meredith Dietz had a similar experience with the T-Rex Ultra 2. Not all of Zepp’s products hit the mark they aim for, but they’re never bad, and I’m generally pretty impressed with the company. The Active line delivers on the basics at a good priceEven at full price, the Active 2 Sport watch is only $99.99. I haven’t tested this watch myself, but I have been trying out the Active Max ($169.99), a more recent version with a bigger screen. It seems pretty nice so far, although you'll have to wait for my final verdict. The Active watches don’t make as big a swing for fancy features as the T-Rex models Meredith and I reviewed, and so it’s a lot easier for them to meet your needs. The Active 2 has GPS and heart rate tracking, sleep tracking, 160+ workout modes, and it can handle calls and texts from a Bluetooth-connected phone. (As with most fitness watches, Android users get more functionality for replying to texts, but iPhone users can still get notifications.) Amazfit says the battery lasts 5 days with "heavy use" and 10 days with "typical use." The Active 2 can even store music and maps, which is impressive other brands only put their offline maps on high-end watches. That said, Active 2 users have said in forums like this one that the storage is limited. One says that one map leaves room for 45 minutes of music; another says they can fit a map plus two hours of audiobooks. That sounds like enough for a single run, but you’d need to switch out maps and music fairly often. Trans women athletes are banned from the Olympic Games starting in 2028
Transgender women athletes are now excluded from all women’s events at the Olympic Games in accordance with a new policy from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The policy will be implemented from the 2028 Olympic Games onward. Female category events at the Olympics, or any other IOC events, will now be limited to “biological females.” Eligibility will be determined by a one-time SRY gene screening via saliva, cheek swab, or blood sample, which the IOC considers “unintrusive compared to other possible methods.” “The policy that we have announced is based on science and has been led by medical experts,” said IOC president Kirsty Coventry, who is also an Olympic champion in swimming. “At the Olympic Games, even the smallest margins can be the difference between victory and defeat. So, it is absolutely clear that it would not be fair for biological males to compete in the female category. In addition, in some sports it would simply not be safe.” Those who screen SRY-negative permanently satisfy the policy’s eligibility criteria for competition. Athletes with a positive screen are ineligible for any female categories but continue to be included in any male or open category or in events that do not classify athletes by sex. The IOC considers the presence of the SRY (sex-determining region Y) gene to represent accurate evidence that an athlete has experienced male sex development, stating in a 10-page policy document that virtually all athletes who screen positive will have testes or testicles that produce testosterone at adult male levels. Exceptions in eligibility In the rarest cases, an exception may be afforded to female athletes diagnosed with Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (CAIS), or other differences in sex development (DSD) that “precludes testosterone’s anabolic and/or performance enhancing effects,” the IOC said in its policy update on Thursday. Discussions about athletes with DSDs were brought to the global stage by two-time Olympic champion runner Caster Semenya. The South African athlete has a DSD and has been banned from competing in her event since 2019. She refuses to abide by the World Athletics rules to reduce her hormone levels with medication. Semenya’s seven-year legal battle against sex eligibility rules in track and field received wide attention. “I have carried this weight. So have other women of color who deserved better from sport,” Semenya said in a statement to the New York Times. “Reintroducing genetic screening is not progress — it is walking backward.” In 2023, Algerian boxer Imane Khelif and Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting were disqualified from the World Championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA) for allegedly failing gender eligibility tests. The following year at the Paris Olympics, Khelif went on to win gold in the women’s welterweight, still facing scrutiny over gender eligibility. At the time, the IOC allowed her and Yu-ting to compete. Last month, Khelif told CNN that she has nothing to hide and will comply with gene testing requirements enforced by the IOC to be eligible for the 2028 Olympics. The first openly transgender woman to compete in the Olympics was Laurel Hubbard, a New Zealand weightlifter. While she did not win a medal, she still made history at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Responses to the policy The IOC’s policy follows President Donald The President’s signing of an executive order, Keeping Men out of Women Sports, in February 2025. In a news conference on Thursday, Coventry said her decision on the policy had not been influenced by The President’s views. In a statement, White House spokesman Davis Ingle said, “The IOC aligning their policy with President The President’s Executive Order ahead of the 2028 LA Games is common sense and long-overdue.” Pushback against the IOC’s policy came from Brian Dittmeier, director of LGBTQI equality at the National Women’s Law Center. In a statement, Dittmeier said, “By mandating sex testing and excluding transgender and intersex women from competition, the International Olympic Committee is embracing a policy that invites confusion, stigma, and invasive scrutiny rather than clarity or safety.” View the full article

You’re suddenly told to WFH tomorrow. Are you about to get fired over Zoom?
Meta laid off hundreds of employees this week, just months after notable cuts to its virtual reality and metaverse division. These job losses amount to less than one percent of the company’s overall workforce, reportedly impacting about 700 employees across a number of departments. But recent headlines indicate there’s likely more to come: Earlier this month, Reuters reported that Meta was planning large-scale cuts to its workforce that could slash 20% of jobs—or more—to help offset the company’s investments in artificial intelligence. (At the time, Meta dismissed those claims as “speculative reporting about theoretical approaches.”) Layoffs are not exactly unexpected in the current environment, where employers feel emboldened to use AI as a justification for trimming headcount; companies like Amazon and Block have cut thousands of jobs since the start of the year. What might be more interesting, however, is how Meta went about its latest round of cuts. According to Business Insider, multiple Meta employees were told to work from home on Wednesday, seemingly in anticipation of the layoff announcement. The employees were notified through an email from HR on Tuesday night, which simply stated that leadership would share further details. Sources told Business Insider that the emails were received by employees in at least two departments. It’s not clear whether the employees in question were, in fact, impacted by yesterday’s layoffs. But in a decade that has normalized Zoom layoffs, this isn’t an unusual tactic. Being asked to stay home—particularly at companies that have been strict about return to office policies—can be a sign that layoffs might be coming. Some companies seem to believe it’s easier to control the narrative and protect against retaliatory behavior if employees are not physically in the office when layoffs take place. After Elon Musk acquired Twitter in 2022, he laid off about half of the company’s workforce almost immediately. In emails that went out in the evening, employees were asked to stay at home the following day, as the layoffs were announced. Some people reportedly lost access to internal platforms that night, before being officially notified about their employment status. (Days later, Musk reversed the company’s remote work policy, forcing employees to return to the office full-time.) When companies like Tesla and Google have carried out layoffs, some employees have reported that they tried to go into the office and found that their badges were deactivated. Since the pandemic, a more impersonal approach to delivering news about layoffs has been normalized to some extent. Some employers have drawn negative attention for being particularly callous: In 2021, the Better.com CEO Vishal Garg laid off hundreds of employees over a Zoom call, a move that garnered widespread criticism. In recent years, companies like Tesla and General Motors have even notified employees about layoffs through email—or via calendar invite, in the case of Intuit. There are, of course, more humane ways to let go of employees, even remotely. But many companies struggle to conduct layoffs with compassion, and very often, leaders fail to take accountability or offer employees enough transparency when they disclose job losses. The regular cadence of mass layoffs over the last few years has also empowered employers to act with more impunity, since they are shielded by the sheer scale of job losses. As widespread AI adoption continues apace, it will certainly yield further layoffs and more displaced workers—and companies are likely to become even more vigilant about the potential fallout. So if your employer has a strict in-office policy and suddenly asks that you work from home, it could very well mean layoffs are around the corner. View the full article

It's an adorable little robot-with-a-camera designed to help pet owners to interact with their pets when they're not home. You control it with an app and it takes surprisingly nice-looking 2K video, even when it's dark. It also transmits and listens to sound, so you can talk to your pet, or press a button to make it meow, bark, or quack. It can also act as a surveillance camera and take pictures or video when something moves in front of it. This is literally the only toy my cat has ever played with. My cat is not nice. She won't let you pet or hold her. She's all business. I've tried catnip, all kinds of toys, balls of string, and everything else, but Peepers was never interested in anything until I got her a robot/surveillance camera. Then, for a few, glorious moments, I got the Most Serious Cat on Earth to bat a toy around. It was a breakthrough in our relationship, and I even caught it on camera. You Can Save Up to 23% on an M3 iPad Air During Amazon's Big Spring Sale

While companies might make you feel like you always need to buy their latest and greatest model, you can save quite a bit by opting for their older devices. These days, the hardware from reputable manufacturers tends to be good enough to last years, which makes one or two generation-old devices a great value. As such, if you're in the market for a new iPad, consider an "old" iPad instead. Amazon has Apple's cellular M3 iPad Air with AppleCare+ up to 23% off for its Big Spring Sale. iPad Air (11-inch) $718.99 at Amazon $928.00 Save $209.01 Get Deal Get Deal $718.99 at Amazon $928.00 Save $209.01 As you might assume from the intro, the M3 iPad Air is not the latest iPad Air. Apple has since released the M4 version, which comes with very few perks over the M3. The first, of course, is that it has the M4 chip, which is one generation newer, and also enables the iPad's Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support (as opposed to Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 on the M3). The M4 chip has one more efficiency core than the M3 (five vs. four), 120GB/s memory bandwidth over the M3's 100GB/s memory bandwidth, and 12GB of RAM over the M3's 8GB. Aside from that, however, these are the same exact iPads, down to the battery life (10 hours of web surfing over wifi, according to Apple). What you get with the M3 Air, then, is Apple's "modern" iPad design, with thin bezels, a selfie camera along the long bezel (perfect for video calls when holding the iPad in landscape), and one 12MP camera on the back. These are also the cellular models, which means you can pay for an optional plan to use the iPad out and about—including connecting to 5G networks. Really, the only decision is which size to get: The Air comes in either 11-inch or 13-inch variants, each of which will impact the pricing. The 13-inch is $838, which Amazon says is 16% off the list price. The 11-inch, however, is $718.99, which is 23% off the list price. Both of those prices are for the 256GB wifi-only models. The 11-inch comes in Space Black for this sale, while the 13-inch comes in Blue. I still use my 2021 iPad Pro with its M1 chip, and it has no trouble handing iPadOS 26. I have no reservations about recommending an iPad with a chip that's two generations newer than that. Apple's iPad software, while more robust than it has ever been, isn't the most demanding, so these chips really do last a long time. You can save some money if you don't want the model with AppleCare+. Amazon will sell you an 11-inch cellular M3 iPad Air for $649.99, it just won't be covered by Apple's extended warranty. Bad news: Your pets may be ruining your sleep
Many people enjoy sleeping with their pets. Who wouldn’t? After a hard day of work, cuddling up with a cute animal that shows you unconditional love is just the thing many people need. But sadly, after digging into a newly released study, they may start to think twice before letting their furry friends into bed at night. The Conversation recently published an article highlighting the major findings of a study by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine that examined the pros and cons of having pets sleep in bed with them—something that 46% of respondents do. Though the research suggests that sleeping with your pet in bed may have psychological benefits, it may actually have a negative effect on your sleep quality. “Sleeping with a pet, particularly one with whom we have a close bond, may reduce this sense of vulnerability while enhancing a sense of safety,” the publication writes. However, “Research suggests that even when pet guardians report better sleep, physiological measures often show more fragmented sleep when they share the bed with their pets.” The writer, Renata Roma, a researcher at the University of Saskatchewan specializing in human-animal interactions, continues: “In one study, researchers used a wristwatch-like device to measure people’s movement during the night while they slept with their pets. They found that even when people felt they slept well, their sleep tended to be more disrupted. In some cases, these disruptions were related to the pet’s movements during the night.” This may be due to their increased sensitivity to “external stimuli,” such as noises from outside throughout the night, especially among those who sleep with dogs, as those respondents reported being more disrupted in their sleep than cat owners—though the results for the latter are still mixed. But owners are not the only ones not getting the best sleep. The animals are being affected as well. “Co-sleeping with a pet, therefore, may affect both the person’s sleep and the pet’s sleep,” Roma writes. People who get a consistent amount of lower-quality sleep can have a negative impact on different parts of their mental and emotional well-being, the study reports. “This may appear as lower tolerance for frustration or a reduced ability to manage emotionally challenging situations,” The Conversation says. “Fatigue, depressed mood, difficulty focusing, and a range of other symptoms may also be linked to poor sleep.” When considering whether people should allow their pets to sleep in bed with them, the article asks readers to view the situation differently. “Rather than asking whether co-sleeping with your pet is beneficial or harmful, a better question is: are you prioritizing emotional comfort or uninterrupted sleep?” It’s a question pet owners may be loath to answer. After all, how can they say no to that face? View the full article

This JBL Boombox Is 40% Off During Amazon's Big Spring Sale
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. Old school boomboxes might be a relic of the past, but they’ve been reinterpreted in recent years with sleek, modern, and more portable silhouettes. While not as compact as some Bluetooth speakers, they pack a bigger punch in sound, especially when it comes to playing music outdoors. One of the best-rated ones on the market is the JBL Boombox 3, which earned a PCMag Editor’s Choice Award—and it's currently 40% off for Amazon’s Spring Sale, bringing it down to its lowest price ever of $299.95 (originally $499.95). JBL Boombox 3 $299.95 at Amazon $499.95 Save $200.00 Get Deal Get Deal $299.95 at Amazon $499.95 Save $200.00 At 14.7 pounds, it might not be the most lightweight speaker, but it’s still technically portable given the built-in handle that lets you carry it from place to place. The control bar lets you link to other JBL speakers, control volume, power, play/pause and Bluetooth pairing, but doesn’t allow you to go back to the previous track. It has a covered rear panel with a compartment housing a 3.5mm aux input, a USB-A port that allows you to charge other devices, and a connector for the included power cable. Aesthetically, it’s similar to the Boombox 2, but adds an extra subwoofer. It’s compatible with Bluetooth 5.3 and supports the SBC codec, but not AAC or AptX. Still, the bass and volume have impressive output in both AC and battery power modes. Battery life lasts up to 24 hours on a charge and takes around 6.5 hours to fully charge from empty. An IP67 rating makes it dust-proof and waterproof (up to one meter of depth for 30 minutes), so poolside hangs or unexpected rain shouldn’t pose an issue. Just note that the snap-shut cover on the back needs to be closed for the rating to apply. The companion app includes a customizable three-band EQ, firmware updates, and battery life monitoring. If you’re looking for a loud, durable outdoor speaker with deep bass and adjustable EQ, and you don’t mind slightly limited Bluetooth codec support or a heavier build, the size-to-power ratio makes this award-winning speaker a reliable choice. With summer right around the corner, and the JBL Boombox 3 at nearly half off, now is a great time to invest.
