Eight Landscaping Features That Can Lower the Summer Heat in Your Yard
2024 was the hottest summer ever recorded, and there’s a good chance that future summers will be even warmer. For most people, planning for those future summers involves upgrading their air-conditioning systems and taking other steps to turn the interior of their homes into cool, dark caves. But what happens if you want to get outside for some fresh air? If your yard is too hot to enjoy during the summer, you might as well not have a yard at all. You can’t air condition the outdoors—but you can lower the temperature with some thoughtful landscaping decisions. If you hesitate to throw a cookout in your outdoor space because you feel like you’re on a grill when you’re out there, consider implementing some of these simple suggestions for how your landscaping is designed. Plant shade treesStep one for making your outdoor areas cooler is to remove all that pesky solar energy that makes every moment in your yard feel like a trip to Mercury. Trees are the most attractive, natural, and effective way to shade your yard. Shade can lower the air temperature of your outdoor space by 15 to 20 degrees, which is a significant drop. Concentrate on deciduous trees (trees that lose their leaves annually), as these will shade your yard and house in the summer but let the warming sun through in the winter. Fast-growing choices include sycamores, which have varieties that thrive in a wide range of climates, as well as maple, oak, and honey locust trees. Ditch hardscapesIf you’ve ever walked out onto your patio in bare feet in the summer, you know that pavement and hardscaping absorb the sun’s heat. While a grass yard has an average temperature of about 78° in full sun, concrete can reach temperatures as high as 135°. Eliminating as much hardscaping as possible in your outdoor areas will not only spare your feet, it will help tamp down the ambient temperature because less heat will be radiating from the ground. For the hardscaping you want or need to keep, consider using a lighter color scheme, as lighter colors reflect more heat. When installing pavers or other hardscape materials, check the light reflectance value (LRV), which is a measurement of how much light the color reflects. The higher the number, the cooler the surface will be—an LRV above 50 percent is a good starting point. Finally, consider using permeable pavers or pavements. These materials allow water to pass through, soaking the ground, which can help cool off your outdoor space. Grow ground coverYou can lower the temperature of the ground or hard surfaces by planting ground cover plants like creeping thyme or vinca. These low-growing plants will spread out and block the sun, lowering the overall temperature of the area and avoiding surfaces that are like skillets against your feet. You can also use a reflective mulch in your plant beds; these include aluminum or other reflective materials to bounce the sun’s light away from the ground, resulting in a small but appreciable decrease in temperature. Use layersOne strategy for cooling down your outdoor area is to trap and hold onto cool, shaded air. You can accomplish this by creating a layered effect, with plants of different heights helping to hold cooler air in and warmer air out. Trees would obviously be your tallest layer, but planting shrubs and other medium-height plants along with a robust ground cover can insulate your outdoor space naturally, moderating the temperature (and enhancing privacy). Encourage vinesWhile tree canopies can keep the sun off your outdoor space when it’s high in the sky, when it starts to sink those punishing rays can still bake your space. Vines and other climbing plants can provide shade horizontally, creeping up fences, trellises, or other vertical surfaces and blocking the sunlight while allowing air movement. Just don’t let them grow on your house—that can lead to serious damage. Channel the airEven on hot summer days, a cool breeze can make an incredible difference in your comfort levels. Designing your landscaping to guide those breezes to the areas where you utilize your outdoor space can help tremendously. Planting a line of tall shrubs or evergreen trees on the opposite side of a fence or wall can create a “wind tunnel” effect that drives refreshing breezes toward you, and pruning your shade trees low will facilitate air movement. On the other hand, if your outdoor space is baked by hot winds, you can plant shrubs or trees to block those winds. Even tall grasses can be effective windbreaks, absorbing and breaking up oven-like breezes before they invade your patio area. Install a rain gardenRain gardens are typically used to control water runoff, but they can also be effective in lowering the surrounding temperature of an outdoor space. Rain gardens are located in depressions where deep-rooted native plants are planted, allowing rainwater to drain into the garden instead of pooling elsewhere (on hardscapes, for example). The cooling effect of the rainwater on the ground can impact what’s known as the Urban Heat Island Effect, lowering the overall temperature of the space. Add water featuresYou can also add water features like fountains or ponds to help with the temperature of an outdoor space—especially when used in conjunction with layered plantings of trees, shrubs, and grasses. The impact of a small water feature might not be huge, but every little bit will help, and water features also bring beauty and a sense of tranquility to any space—which might make the heat more tolerable. Trump pushed oil and gas development in Alaska, but industry is doubtful amid trade tensions
The second The President administration has launched the next stage in the half-century-long battle between commerce and conservation over Alaskan oil and gas development. But its moves are delivering a mixed message to the petroleum industry. The administration has opened – or reopened – large swaths of government land in Alaska to oil and gas drilling, though only some of those opportunities have drawn much commercial interest in recent years. And an 800-mile pipeline across Alaska that the administration says it supports is not yet funded, and other administration policies risk turning off prospective partners. President Donald The President says he wants to grow oil and gas production and advance the goal of what he calls U.S. “energy dominance.” The White House says that term means both reducing the amount of energy imported from other countries and increasing the amount of energy exported from the U.S., especially to allies. The U.S. is already the world’s largest producer and exporter of natural gas as well as the largest producer of crude oil. And the nation’s oil industry boomed under the Biden administration. However, the U.S. does import an average of over 6 million barrels per day of crude oil, most of it from Canada. The President’s efforts seek to boost U.S. production to still greater heights by expanding access to areas for drilling and building related infrastructure. But as a former petroleum geoscientist and industry observer, I would suggest his various actions, taken as a whole, may have more limited effects than he seems to hope. Returned to leasing In one of his first executive orders after retaking office on Jan. 20, 2025, The President declared that the U.S. would develop Alaska’s petroleum resources “to the fullest extent possible.” The Biden administration had banned oil leasing in three areas of Alaska. One was all but 400,000 acres in the coastal plain portion of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Another was a 13-million-acre swath of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, a massive parcel of federal land west of the refuge. The third area was 44 million acres of the offshore coastal portion of the northern Bering Sea, based on concerns for tribal rights and the migration routes of marine mammals. The President moved quickly to reverse all these bans, describing them as an “assault on Alaska’s sovereignty and its ability to responsibly develop (its) resources for the benefit of the Nation.” And The President went farther, expanding the available land by an additional 6 million acres in the petroleum reserve and another 1.1 million acres of the wildlife refuge. All those areas are home to many different types of wildlife, as well as Indigenous groups. The view of industry For the petroleum industry, I expect these actions are both welcome and irrelevant. Reopening the northeastern portion of the petroleum reserve creates a real opportunity: Exploration has found a significant amount of oil and gas in that area, and indications are that there may be more yet to discover. But prospects on the land in the wildlife refuge and the shallow waters of the Bering Sea are not likely of much interest to drilling companies unless oil prices rise significantly from their levels in early 2025. There is no established production in either area at present. And, though the refuge has oil and gas potential, there are no roads or pipelines, and Arctic drilling is especially expensive. In fact, the last two attempts by the government to lease oil development rights in the wildlife refuge drew very little interest. In 2020, the first The President administration teamed with Republicans in Congress to overcome long-standing legal and political opposition to leasing in the refuge. But the 2021 lease sale was a bust, with none of the top oil producers in the state participating. A second round of bidding, in January 2025, received no interest at all from oil companies. Pipe dreams that could come true A strong gain for the petroleum industry would be a major new pipeline to carry natural gas more than 800 miles south from the Prudhoe Bay area on the Arctic coast to a port near Anchorage on south-central Alaska’s Cook Inlet. The idea has its own decades-long history, and has been both pushed forward and set back over the years by changing economics, government plans, and tribal interest and opposition. The main challenge is that there is no way to transport natural gas off the North Slope. Since drilling began in the late 1970s, some has been used locally for heating and running equipment, with the vast majority being reinjected into oil reservoir rock to help maintain oil production. Rising demand and elevated prices in Asia, however, suggest the project could be profitable, despite the current cost estimate of US$44 billion. Project plans indicate most of it would go to build a liquefied natural gas export terminal near Anchorage, with the rest spent to construct an 807-mile pipeline paralleling the existing Trans-Alaska Pipeline, and a plant at Prudhoe Bay that would capture carbon from the atmosphere, compress it and inject it into oil-producing reservoirs to boost production. The pipeline is designed to carry 3.3 billion cubic feet of natural gas each day, which would make it one of the largest pipelines in North America. The export terminal, to be built near the town of Nikiski on Cook Inlet, would have a capacity of roughly 1 trillion cubic feet per year, enough to heat about 15 million homes for a year. The pipeline could take as little as two to three years to build, but the terminal and carbon-capture plant would take longer – five years or so. The exports from Alaska could go to other ports in the U.S., but they could also fetch higher prices in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and possibly China. Gasline Development Corporation A wrench in the works Most of the permits needed for the pipeline-and-export-terminal project have been secured by the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation, a company created by the state of Alaska to build the project. However, no company or foreign government has yet agreed to foot the bill, and despite the support of the The President White House, there’s no indication the federal government will do so either. The The President administration has also created a new barrier to the project. Its sweeping tariffs and the resulting trade war crashed prices in the global oil and gas market in early April 2025. In addition, uncertainty about the permanence of tariffs or other restrictions on international trade are now widespread and directly affect the oil industry. Lower gas and oil prices and less stability make any project less attractive. It’s true that The President exempted oil and gas from his most recent tariffs. But that matters less than the broader effect the trade war is already having, with analysts projecting it is driving the global economy toward recession. Less economic activity means less demand for oil and gas, and therefore less incentive for companies to drill new wells and build new pipelines. To top everything off, the White House slapped heavy tariffs on Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, the very countries that might be inclined to help fund the pipeline project. Even before the trade war, they were hesitant about supporting it. The potential suspension, or reinstatement, or adjustment of tariffs is not likely to help them view the situation as more stable. Those who favor oil and gas development in Alaska may be wondering whether the president is truly on their side. It remains to be seen whether their hopes might end up a casualty of White House economic policy. Scott L. Montgomery is a lecturer in international studies at the University of Washington. Why you should update your old dating app profile photos ASAP
Daters: It might be time to spring clean your dating app profile. More than 50% of young Americans have gone on a date with someone who looked different from their profile photos, according to a new survey from dating app Hily. That’s led 54% of Gen Z and 62% of millennial daters to either end a date early or decline a second one, Hily found after surveying 3,700 dating app users earlier this month. “For a variety of reasons, quite a few people don’t regularly update their profile pics, some not even when their looks change,” the company wrote in an accompanying blog post. “Women tend to be afraid of being judged for their appearance, while men feel like the content of their profile doesn’t make a difference. A lot of women and men just don’t know what to put in their profiles.” About 10% of daters admitted they’re “unlikely to change their profile pics, even if their appearance changes.” But that’s a small share overall: Hily said 84% of women and 83% of men have updated their profiles within the past six months. Still, many young daters will say their pictures may not be 100% true to reality. The survey found that around 45% of Gen Z and 33% of millennials view their own profile pictures as close to their actual looks, but not quite there. This likely fits into the broader public sentiment of users being dismayed with dating apps. According to a 2023 Pew survey, online daters are relatively divided over whether their experiences on the apps have been either positive or negative. If you go on enough dates with people you weren’t expecting to go on dates with (a.k.a.: you were catfished), you’ll likely become a bit jaded with the experience. Take this as your sign to double-check your profile—and maybe swap out a few photos while you’re at it. View the full article

The Sleep Earbuds I Use Every Night Are $30 Off Right Now
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. I've used earbuds to help me sleep for a while now, but I never expected a company to actually make earbuds specifically for sleeping. Anker's Soundcore Sleep A20 are exactly that: earbuds designed to block out excess noise without pressing uncomfortably against your ear. I've been using them for a year and can't recommend them enough. Right now, these sleep earbuds are on sale for $119.99 (originally $149.99)—that is the lowest price they've been, according to price tracking tools. Soundcore Sleep A20 $119.99 at Amazon $149.99 Save $30.00 Get Deal Get Deal $119.99 at Amazon $149.99 Save $30.00 The Sleep A20 are not active noise canceling earbuds, which is how they're able to have such a small, unobtrusive form factor. Instead, they use the in-ear seal to create a natural noise blocker, which, in my opinion, works well enough to block out sounds. They fit quite comfortably and don't press against your ear when you sleep on your side. Very rarely do I wake up with one of them lost in the covers after falling off during the night, but it does happen occasionally (you can use the Find Device feature, which emits a loud sound through the earbuds). The battery life is 14 hours on sleep mode, which includes sounds from the Soundcore app (think like white noise or relaxing sounds). If you have it in Bluetooth mode, where you can listen to Spotify or whatever you want, it's eight hours, but the charging case gives it a total life of up to 80 hours between plug-ins. The companion app is great, with many useful features for sleeping. You can turn your earbuds off after a set amount of time, have a sleep tracker that records your sleep data, a smart volume feature that increases or decreases in volume depending on the sound in your room, full EQ, and other features. When are taxes due? IRS asks taxpayers to ‘act now’ with fewer 2025 returns filed early, amid concerns over DOGE layoffs
Attention! There is now just one day left until the deadline for this year’s tax filing. And the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has already reminded taxpayers to “act now” to pay whatever they owe on their 2024 taxes, or request an extension, before April 15. Fewer Americans have filed their federal taxes, and more have requested extensions, compared with the same period last year, according to CNN, which reviewed the IRS data. According to those numbers, as of March 21, the IRS had received nearly one million fewer tax returns, or 1.1% less, than it received in the same point in the filing cycle last year. While experts told CNN this was not a reason for concern, and that in fact, previous years also showed declines over the same period, there is a lot that’s different about this year’s tax season. It comes amid massive IRS staff cuts (with more likely on the way) due to interference from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE); and internal conflicts inside the agency, underscored by the recent resignation of the acting IRS chair, stemming from DOGE’s attempts to access millions of taxpayers’ personal and financial data, including that of undocumented immigrants. Tax experts told Kiplinger they have noticed a host of problems this tax season, including delays, a lack of customer service, and audit errors. In addition, DOGE’s mandatory return-to-work policy appears to be wreaking havoc at the agency, resulting in staffers having to work out of cafeterias and conference rooms due to a lack of space, as they navigate hallways littered with boxes of paperwork, according to Business Insider, which spoke with eight IRS employees. IRS: ‘There is still time to file electronically” The agency said there is still time to file federal income tax returns electronically to receive a refund via direct deposit. Filing electronically is usually the fastest way to receive tax refunds. “Filing electronically reduces tax return errors as tax software does the calculations, flags common errors and prompts taxpayers for missing information,” the IRS said in a statement. “Most taxpayers qualify for electronic filing at no cost and, when they choose direct deposit, usually receive their refund within 21 days.” Free electronic tax filing options Taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $84,000 or less in 2024 can use IRS Free File, the IRS’s own electronic filing software, from now until October 15. Meanwhile, the IRS’s Direct File is available to eligible taxpayers in 25 states to file their 2024 federal tax returns online directly with the IRS. Go to the Direct File website for more information about Direct File eligibility and the 25 participating states. View the full article

iPadOS 19 Might Make Your iPad More Like a Mac
There are two kinds of iPad fans in this world: those who love the tablet just the way it is, and those who desperately wish Apple would make a touchscreen Mac, already. While Apple may never bring macOS to the iPad (at least, not in my lifetime), there's reason to believe Apple's tablet might soon be closing the computing gap between it and the Mac. Could iPadOS 19 finally solve the iPad's multitasking problem? According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is planning a sizable overhaul to its tablets with iPadOS 19. Gurman's sources say the changes this year focus on "productivity, multitasking and app window management." It seems the team wants the iPad to function more like a Mac than it currently does. If true, this is fantastic news—at least, for those of us who find iPadOS a bit lacking. I really do enjoy my iPad for certain tasks, and, in theory, it should be my go-to computing device. (My Mac doesn't have a touchscreen or a stylus, after all.) But more often than not, I find myself returning to my MacBook for most applications that aren't simple web browsing, messaging, or content consumption. Despite 15 years of the iPad, our modern digital world is still optimized for a desktop computing experience. That said, Apple has made meaningful changes to the iPad over the years to mimic that desktop computing experience. Multitasking, for example, has gone through multiple iterations over the years. In fact, right now, you have two choices when it comes to multitasking: You can stick with the basic experience, which lets you lock two apps side-by-side in "Split View," and show or hide another iOS-like window as a "Slide Over." Or, you can use Stage Manager, which Apple introduced with iPadOS 16.1. Stage Manager lets you add up to four floating, resizable windows to the main display at once, or connect an external display to add even more. It definitely acts more like macOS than the traditional multitasking function in iPadOS, but it's far from a comparable replacement—the overall experience is a bit buggy, and the resized app windows aren't nearly as optimized as they would be on macOS. I thought I'd love it when Apple first launched the feature, but the more I used it, the more I just wanted my Mac back. The best way to use an iPad at the moment, in my opinion, is one app at a time. macOS is not coming to the iPadGurman doesn't share many details about Apple's plans to make iPadOS more like macOS, but he does add an important point here: If you're hoping the company will simply bring the Mac's operating system to the iPad, keep dreaming. Your iPad will still be running iPadOS, and your Mac will still be running macOS. While it would be great if Apple configured a version of macOS optimized for its large touchscreen devices, the company won't do it—likely because it would cannibalize Mac sales. In Apple's view, the best-case scenario is to make the iPad good enough for people to buy, while also buying a Mac for the things the iPad can't do. It's kind of like Trader Joe's: You love it for what it's best at, but once you leave, you have to stop at a normal grocery store for the things Trader Joe's doesn't carry. I'm not sure what Apple plans to do here to make the iPad more productive, with improved multitasking and app window management. If macOS itself isn't the goal here, perhaps we can expect more macOS-like windows and behaviors: Maybe it'll still be iPadOS, but resized windows won't feel like glorified iOS apps. Perhaps you could run more windows at once, or have easy app-switching without the windows moving around at random. Any of these idea would be an improvement over what we currently have. While I would love a true Mac tablet, if iPadOS 19 makes my iPad more usable as a computer, that might be good enough for me. View the full article

What's the Worst That Will Happen If You File Your Taxes Late (or Not at All)?
With the April 15 tax deadline looming tomorrow, many Americans are rushing to complete their returns. Personally, my phone is blowing up with all my procrastinator friends asking last-minute questions. And good for them for making the deadline at all, no matter how frenzied. But what happens if you miss the deadline? The consequences vary dramatically depending on whether you simply file late or don't file at all. Let's take a look at what happens in either scenario, and what options you have if you're not ready to file by tomorrow. What happens if you file your taxes late?First off, it's important to clarify the difference between failure to file and failure to pay. Failure to file refers to neglecting to submit tax returns by the filing deadline, while failure to pay occurs when taxes owed are not remitted by the due date. The most important piece of advice here: File even if you can't pay. Filing on time avoids the failure-to-file penalty, which is typically higher than the failure-to-pay penalty. Requesting an extensionThe good news is that the IRS offers a six-month extension for anyone who needs more time to prepare their tax return. That means as long as you request an extension by tomorrow, you have until Oct. 15 to file without penalties. Here's what you need to know: File Form 4868 ("Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return") by April 15 This gives you until October 15, 2025, to file your complete tax return Important: An extension to file is NOT an extension to pay any taxes owed You still need to estimate and pay any taxes due by April 15 to avoid penalties Filing an extension is completely legal and doesn't increase your audit risk—but tomorrow is the last day to get your request in for this avenue. Penalties for late payment (even with an extension)Like I mention above, there's a big difference between failure to file and failure to pay. The IRS imposes a failure to pay penalty one-half of one percent (0.5%) for each month, or part of a month, up to a maximum of 25% of the amount of tax that remains unpaid from the due date of the return until the tax is paid in full. Interest accrues on both unpaid taxes and penalties from the due date until the debt is settled. These penalties apply from April 15 until you pay your tax bill in full. State tax considerationsMost states follow similar extension rules to the federal government, but deadlines and specific requirements vary. Check with your state's tax agency for their specific extension procedures. What happens if you don't file your taxes at all?Failing to file your tax return at all is much more serious than filing late, with consequences that can include: Severe financial penaltiesIf you owe the federal government money, the failure-to-file penalty is around 5% of the unpaid taxes due each month until you hit the 25% maximum. This penalty is ten times higher than the failure-to-pay penalty. After 60 days, you will be charged $485, or 100% of the tax due (whichever is less). Plus, the same interest charges that apply to late payments also apply here. Loss of refundsIf you're due a refund, you generally won't face penalties for filing late. However, you must file within three years of the original due date to claim your refund. After three years, you permanently forfeit your refund. IRS enforcement actionsFor persistent non-filers who owe taxes, the IRS can take increasingly severe actions: Tax liens against your property Wage garnishment Seizure of assets The IRS may file a "Substitute for Return" (SFR) on your behalf, which won't include deductions or credits you might qualify for, and often results in a higher tax bill than if you had filed yourself. Criminal prosecutionIn extreme cases of willful non-filing, especially if combined with other tax evasion tactics, you could face criminal charges for tax evasion. That means penalties up to $100,000 and five years imprisonment. Luckily, the IRS typically pursues criminal charges only in cases of deliberate fraud or persistent non-compliance—not simple mistakes or procrastination. What to do if you can't payIf your reason for not filing is an inability to pay, remember: File anyway: The penalties for not filing are much worse than those for not paying. Request a payment plan: The IRS offers installment agreements for taxpayers who can't pay in full. Consider an "Offer in Compromise": In cases of serious financial hardship, the IRS may settle for less than the full amount owed. Request "Currently Not Collectible" status: If you're facing extreme financial hardship, the IRS may temporarily halt collection efforts. To find out more about the payment options above, here's the best way to reach an agent at the IRS. The bottom lineMissing the tax deadline isn't ideal, but filing an extension is straightforward and gives you breathing room to prepare your return properly. The critical thing to remember is that it's always better to file—even if you can't pay what you owe—than not to file at all. The penalties for non-filing are substantially higher and can lead to much more serious consequences. If you're pressed for time with tomorrow's deadline approaching, consider filing an extension today and then addressing your complete tax situation when you have more time to prepare properly. This could also buy you time to consult with a qualified tax professional. View the full article

Google Just Patched a 20-Year-Old Chrome Bug
There are numerous ways that your internet activity is tracked as you navigate from website to website, many of which you can mitigate with your choice of browser (and browser settings), as well as the use of tools like VPNs. Google Chrome remains the absolute worst browser for privacy for many reasons, but that doesn't mean the browser is free of privacy progress. In fact, the upcoming version of Chrome will finally patch a 20-year-old bug that allowed users to be tracked and profiled through their previously visited links. A privacy fix is coming to Chrome 136The issue, which Google is addressing with Chrome 136, has to do with how a user's previously clicked links are displayed from site to site. As BleepingComputer explains, Chrome stores visited links globally and allows them to be styled across sites as a different color from the default blue—even if you've clicked them from an entirely different website. For example, you might see a link as purple on one website, indicating you've visited it before, but you had first clicked that link on a different site entirely. This way of storing visited links creates significant privacy and security concerns, as it leaves users' browser history open to leaks and increases the risk of phishing and various cyber attacks. BleepingComputer reports that researchers have found multiple attacks in the past that originated from this vulnerability. Seeing as this was the way Chrome handled the situation for twenty years, that's not too surprising. That's changing with the upcoming 136 update. This version implements "triple-key partitioning," which marks links as visited only on the same site and frame origin where the link was clicked. There's also an exception for "self-links," meaning a site can display links to its own subpages as visited even if you clicked those links elsewhere on the internet—since sites already know if you've landed on these pages. What Chrome users need to doThe fix is expected to be turned on by default once Chrome 136 rolls out, but users on the current version (Chrome 135) and any previous versions back to 132 can enable it manually. Go to chrome://flags/#partition-visited-link-database-with-self-links and select Enabled from the drop-down. Note that the feature is still experimental and may not function as expected. Of course, you may simply consider switching to a browser that offers better privacy protection. (Firefox and Safari also have visited link styles concerns, though not as glaring as Chrome's.) Want a private life? Here’s 5 ways to reclaim your privacy
Lawrence Cappello is an award-winning professor of U.S. legal & constitutional history at the University of Alabama and a graduate of New York City Public Schools. He is the author of None of Your Damn Business: Privacy in the United States from the Gilded Age to the Digital Age (University of Chicago Press) and a certified information privacy professional (CIPP/US & CIPM). His work on the right to privacy has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, The Economist, The Hill, and other media outlets. What’s the big idea? In an age of constant connectivity, privacy can feel like a thing of the past—but award-winning professor Lawrence Cappello makes a compelling case for why it still matters. With 20 sharp, practical lessons, On Privacy explores how privacy protects free societies, enhances personal well-being, and is worth defending. Designed for those who want to stay connected without sacrificing their personal space, it offers clear, actionable steps to safeguard privacy in everyday life. Concise, practical, and no-nonsense, On Privacy is a must-read guide to reclaiming control in the digital age. Below, Lawrence shares five key insights from his new book, On Privacy: Twenty Lessons to Live By. Listen to the audio version—read by Lawrence himself—in the Next Big Idea App. 1. Why privacy matters. There are parts of your life that are simply nobody else’s business. That’s not paranoia—that’s just being human. It doesn’t matter if you’re liberal or conservative, rich or poor—everyone, on a fundamental level, has a desire to keep certain aspects of their life private. Privacy is essential for human dignity. Privacy acts as a shield against people who would take snippets of information out of context to attack our reputations or manipulate us for their own personal benefit. And in the internet age, this is happening a lot more often. Privacy also creates space for intimacy. We share our secrets with the people we love and trust. It’s a crucial building block for establishing the trust needed to forge and maintain deep bonds with our friends and loved ones. For many of us, these bonds are the very best part of being alive. And it keeps us from being prisoners of our recorded past. A mistake you made at 16 shouldn’t define you at 40. But without privacy, our worst moments follow us forever. It also protects our mental health. Everyone needs time alone to think, to recharge, to just be. Without privacy, we never get a break from the noise Most importantly, privacy is a precondition for freedom. Tyrants invade privacy to accumulate power, suppress dissent, and control their citizens. If a society calls itself free, it must protect privacy—because without it, freedom is just an illusion. 2. How to respond when someone says: “If you’re not doing anything wrong, you should have nothing to hide.” You’ve heard it before: “If you’re not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to hide.” That argument sounds reasonable—until you think about it for more than five seconds. People have been throwing this line around since the time of the Caesars, and it was just as stupid then as it is now. When you look at it closely, you realize this argument is just another way of saying that all secrets are bad. That privacy is only for criminals or people doing something sinful. But that’s nonsense. “Secrets aren’t sinful.” We all have secrets, and they’re not just normal—they’re essential. The secrets between romantic partners or close friends build trust and intimacy. The secrets between doctors and patients create a space where people can be honest about their health and their fears. The secrets between business associates protect innovation and keep creative ideas from being stolen. Secrets aren’t sinful. And really, how interesting can you really be if you don’t have any secrets? The problem is that all of our personal information today exists in snippets. And when taken out of context, these snippets can be twisted, misinterpreted, or weaponized against us. In the Internet Age, this happens constantly. People make snap judgments. Bad actors manipulate narratives. Reputation-damaging leaks happen in seconds. So, no, it’s not about hiding anything. It’s about controlling how we’re seen and making sure our private lives aren’t distorted or exploited by people who don’t have our best interests at heart. 3. Three quick ways you can protect your privacy right now. Cover your webcam. It sounds paranoid—until you realize that hackers can and do hijack webcams all the time. A simple slide cover or even a piece of tape blocks prying eyes. They cost about three dollars. Think about some of the more intimate things you do in front of your laptop. Now, think about the things your kids, your partner, or your loved ones might also do. Do you want a stranger in a position to record that? I don’t know one person who works in tech that doesn’t have a slide over their laptop – and you should too. Use old-school passcodes for your phone, not FaceID or fingerprints. A six-digit passcode for your phone might feel old-school, but it’s still one of the most effective ways to keep your data locked down. Biometric security like FaceID and fingerprints may feel futuristic, but they’re getting easier to hack. Nobody can hack your brain. You can be forced, legally or physically, to unlock your phone with your face or fingerprint. It’s way harder to make you spit out your passcode. Open your phone and check your app permissions. Right now, there’s a good chance some app on your phone has access to your microphone or camera, even if it doesn’t need it. Some apps default to always listening, always tracking. Take two minutes to check your settings and shut off unnecessary access. You’ll be shocked at what’s running in the background. None of these are drastic steps. They’re low effort, high reward ways to instantly boost your privacy. 4. If you want change, make privacy profitable. In America, money talks. We need to show companies that they can get rich by protecting privacy. The good news is that this is already happening. Have you seen an Apple commercial in the last couple of years? They built a whole ad campaign around the slogan “PRIVACY—THAT’S IPHONE.” Google, as well, runs ads for privacy all the time. Have you been on a subway or bus in a major metro area lately? Clever ads for VPNs are everywhere. “Did you know that the fastest-growing company in America in 2020 was a firm that helps businesses build privacy plans?” Privacy is now a commodity, and the market is responding. Privacy-first products—VPNs, encrypted messaging apps, password managers—are booming. Did you know that the fastest-growing company in America in 2020 was a firm that helps businesses build privacy plans? Why? Because consumers are demanding it. So many privacy invasions revolve around money. If we want real, lasting change, we need to make privacy profitable. That means spending money on privacy-first products and calling out companies that exploit data, because bad press affects the bottom line. If you want companies to care about privacy, make it worth their while. If you’re betting on Congress to fix this, you’ll be waiting quite a while. 5. Privacy isn’t dead. People say all the time that privacy is dead—and to those people, I say go hand your unlocked phone to a stranger for five minutes and try not to have a panic attack. If privacy were truly dead, cybersecurity wouldn’t be a trillion-dollar industry. Companies spend fortunes protecting their data. Governments guard their secrets. Even the people who claim they don’t care about privacy still use passcodes, delete messages, and think twice before posting certain things online. I’ve never met anybody who wants their text messages exposed to the public. Or their emails. Or their search history. The truth of it is that we have way less privacy than we used to, and people are exhausted. They’ve been told privacy is dead for so long that they no longer know what to fight for. “I’ve never met anybody who wants their text messages exposed to the public.” So, let’s get real about it. Instead of making privacy some impossible, all-or-nothing battle, we need to cut through the noise and focus on what kinds of privacy actually matter to people—what they instinctively protect in their daily lives. And because this issue has become so tangled, the last thing we need is academic jargon or overcomplication (and I say this as a professor). What people need are clear, practical solutions. The first step to protecting privacy is being able to explain why it matters in a way anyone can understand. That’s what this very short book is—a practical guide, written in plain-spoken language, that cuts through the complexity. So, if you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by privacy debates or know someone who has, On Privacy was written with you in mind. Let’s start having smarter, saner conversations about privacy—because it’s not dead. Privacy matters. And it is worth protecting. What happens if I don’t file my taxes? Don’t let DOGE cuts tempt you into believing the IRS is toothless
It’s fair to assume that most of us can relate to the famous saying, “in this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes.” This is just the second half of one of Benjamin Franklin’s last great nuggets of wisdom, but more on that to come. As Franklin would likely have reminded you, Tuesday, April 15, 2025, is the last day to file your federal income taxes for 2024. With everything going on at Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), including reported layoffs at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), it might be tempting to try and fly under the radar this year and not file your taxes, hoping to dodge an audit. However, even with all the cuts in government jobs, this life decision will have consequences. Here’s a deeper look at Franklin’s words, an overview on potential IRS job cuts, and what could happen if you don’t file by the April 15 deadline. Some of Benjamin Franklin’s last words What the average Joe might not know is that Franklin’s proverb was first penned in November 1789 in a letter to French scientist Jean-Baptiste Le Roy, according to the National Constitution Center. It became public knowledge in 1817 when it was translated from French and printed as part of a larger collection of Franklin’s private correspondence. The reason for the letter was twofold. Franklin wanted to check up on his old friend because he hadn’t heard from him since the start of the French Revolution. He also updated Le Roy on America’s beginnings. The full quote reveals Franklin’s cautious optimism for the new country he helped create. “Our new Constitution is now established, everything seems to promise it will be durable; but, in this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes,” he wrote. He went on to discuss his own well-being. “My health continues much as it has been for some time, except that I grow thinner and weaker so that I cannot expect to hold out much longer.” Franklin’s words turned out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts as he died just five months later on April 17, 1790, in Philadelphia. How DOGE cuts will affect the IRS Since Franklin valued the checks and balances found in the constitution and spoke out against authoritarianism, it is fair to say that he might have concerns about some of the The President administration’s actions. It’s likely he would have agreed with Theodore Chuang, a U.S. District Court judge for the District of Maryland, who claims that Musk’s leadership position is unconstitutional, as Inc. reported. According to Chuang, Musk’s position violates Article II, Section 2 of the constitution, otherwise known as the “appointments clause,” because he has not been properly appointed by the president and approved by the Senate. For now, The President and Musk plan to continue their cuts. In March, CNN reported on a leaked email from DOGE that called for a 20% reduction of the IRS, which would put 18,200 individuals out of a job. According to the nonpartisan Budget Lab at Yale University, although this would save $1.4 billion in 2026, it would ultimately cost the federal government $6.8 billion in lost tax revenue. If there are fewer people to collect taxes, fewer people pay. So what if I don’t file my 2024 taxes? Just because the IRS is laying off workers, that doesn’t mean you should blow off your taxes. They help fund everything from roads to education to defense of our country. If you miss the April 15 deadline and you owe, you could be slapped with interest and fees. The amount would depend on just how late you are and how much you owe. The IRS has a breakdown of failure-to-pay penalties on its website. If you owe the federal government money, the failure-to-file penalty is around 5% of the unpaid taxes due each month until you hit the 25% maximum. After 60 days, you will be charged $485, or 100% of the tax due, whichever figure is less. If you don’t pay on time, there is an additional penalty of 0.5% of the unpaid taxes for each month. You are able to appeal penalties if you can prove that you missed the deadline due to a “reasonable cause.” These include serious illness, natural disasters, death in the family, and more. Typically, the IRS does not accept an incompetent tax professional or absence of funds excuses. I don’t owe any taxes. Do I still have to file? If you are due a refund but have not filed your taxes, you won’t face penalty fees. However, you also won’t receive your refund if you don’t file within three years. For context, the ultimate deadline to file for 2024 tax refunds is April 15, 2028. If you don’t file by then, Uncle Sam will keep your money. How do I avoid fees and interest? If you haven’t filed your taxes yet, you have until April 15 to file an extension. Use Form 4868 to give yourself the gift of more time. It’s important to note, though, that even with this extension, you still need to pay your estimated taxes to prevent pesky penalties and inconvenient interest charges. View the full article
