  2. The irony of modern work life hits you somewhere between your third consecutive hybrid meeting and the moment you realize you’ve been holding your breath for the past hour. We’ve engineered every process for maximum output, yet reports consistently show that workplace burnout is affecting us more than ever. As someone who followed the straight-A path from childhood—chasing perfect grades, moving from one goalpost to another through MBA to big tech product executive—I’ve witnessed this optimization obsession firsthand while shaping experiences for over half a billion users. But what if the solution isn’t another wellness program or time management technique? What if it’s something far simpler, and more subversive? What if the solution is putting aside your work and engaging in a little play? Research from Johns Hopkins University’s International Arts + Mind Lab, detailed in the 2023 bestseller Your Brain on Art by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross, shows that engaging in art reduces the stress hormone cortisol, no matter your skill level, with some benefits appearing in as little as 20 minutes. A 2025 study of nearly 2,500 people across five countries found that creativity can be reliably predicted by how often the brain switches between its default mode network (active during mind-wandering) and its executive control network (which handles focused attention and cognitive control). These brief creative interludes enhance productivity by allowing different brain networks to make new connections. I’ve found that weaving micro-creativity practices into my days has increased my daily joy, aliveness, and overall wellbeing. At work, these creative breaks help me shake off the energy from difficult meetings, discover fresh perspectives when I’m stuck on problems, and connect more meaningfully with teammates who join me in these playful moments. Here are a few practices I love that you can use now to sneak a little play into your workday. 1. Become a Workplace Tea Alchemist Turn your coffee break into a micro-adventure by experimenting with tea combinations. Mix Earl Grey with chamomile, or green tea with cinnamon. Research the origins of different blends—did you know Bigelow started as a small family business in 1945? If you’re more of a coffee drinker, create your own flavor experiments—add a dash of cardamom or vanilla extract, or challenge yourself to draw a heart in your foam. (Wonky shapes count as art too!) This curiosity-driven exploration activates what psychologists call openness to experience, which correlates with better conflict resolution abilities and cognitive flexibility. 2. Replace To-Do Lists with ‘To-Doodle’ Lists Instead of writing “Review Q3 budget” in stark text, sketch it. Draw a treasure chest for budget review, a mountain for the challenging client presentation, or abstract shapes that represent your energy around each task. This isn’t about artistic skill; it’s about engaging the right brain’s pattern recognition while planning left-brain tasks. 3. Invite Random Hallway Interactions Ask one unexpected question to someone you see regularly but rarely talk to deeply, like “If you could teleport anywhere right now for lunch, where would you go?” or “If colors had personalities, which one would be your best friend?” The security guard who greets you each morning might have fascinating insights about the most interesting characters in the building. One such conversation led me to discover that Dolly Parton finds creative inspiration in graveyards, where she walks among headstones, finding sparks for her next song! 4. Open Team Huddles With ‘What I’m Saying No To’ Bingo Start each team huddle by sharing one thing you’re actively choosing not to do this week, but make it a game. Create a bingo card with common “no” categories like “unnecessary meeting,” “weekend work,” “social obligation,” and see who gets bingo first as team members share their weekly boundaries. This ritual normalizes boundary-setting, reveals hidden priorities, and creates psychological permission for intentional choices about time and energy. 5. Become a Workplace Note Fairy Write tiny, anonymous notes of appreciation and leave them where colleagues will find them: “Thank you for always restocking the coffee!” “Your enthusiasm in meetings is contagious!” “Someone here gives the best hallway waves—thank you!” The act of crafting these small surprises shifts your brain from problem-focused thinking to wonder. One teammate told me that leaving weekly mystery notes became her favorite stress-relief ritual! 6. Go on Office Color Hunts Set a timer for three minutes and hunt for a specific color throughout your workspace. How many shades of yellow exist in your office? This micro-adventure forces you to notice your environment with fresh eyes and activates “attention restoration,” the mental reset that comes from shifting from directed attention to fascination. The beauty of these three-minute playful acts lies in their accessibility. Unlike meditation apps or wellness programs, they don’t require special equipment or cozy conditions. They work precisely because they fit into the existing structure of your day. More importantly, they address what organizational psychologist Dr. Christina Maslach identifies as the core drivers of burnout: lack of control, insufficient rewards, and values mismatch. These micro-creative acts restore a sense of agency, provide immediate intrinsic rewards, and reconnect you with the playful, curious aspects of yourself that often get buried under performative environments. The goal isn’t to become more creative in order to be more productive. It’s to remember that you’re human, not a productivity machine. And sometimes, that three-minute reminder is exactly what it takes to feel alive again in a world that has optimized everything except joy. View the full article

  5. When companies conduct background screenings, they focus on five essential factors: criminal history, employment history, educational credentials, identity verification, and professional licenses. Each of these elements plays a significant role in ensuring a safe and compliant workplace. For instance, criminal history checks can reveal serious convictions, whereas employment and education verifications confirm an applicant’s qualifications. Comprehending these factors can help you appreciate the screening process’s importance and what employers are looking for in candidates. Key Takeaways Criminal history checks assess serious convictions and ensure workplace safety, particularly for roles involving vulnerable populations. Employment history confirmation validates job titles and dates, revealing applicant honesty and potential red flags. Educational credential validation confirms necessary qualifications and prevents hiring unqualified candidates. Identity verification uses SSN traces to prevent fraud and identity theft, forming a basis for further checks. Professional license and certification checks verify necessary credentials and compliance with industry standards, protecting employers from liability risks. Criminal History Verification When evaluating potential employees, criminal history verification plays an important role in ensuring workplace safety and determining an applicant’s suitability for a given position. What makes you fail a background check often includes serious convictions like felonies or pending cases that could pose risks to the workplace. Employers typically see various aspects in a background check, such as felony and misdemeanor records, and even checks against sex offender registries. What companies look for in a background check often relates directly to the job’s responsibilities; for example, positions involving vulnerable populations may require a more stringent review. It’s vital for employers to comply with local laws and obtain written consent from candidates before conducting these checks. The Fair Credit Reporting Act mandates transparency if adverse decisions arise from the results, ensuring candidates understand their rights during the hiring process. Employment History Confirmation Verifying employment history is a fundamental step in the hiring process, closely linked to evaluating a candidate’s integrity and qualifications. This process involves confirming the accuracy of job titles, employment dates, and reasons for leaving previous positions. By doing so, you assess an applicant’s honesty and qualifications. Employers often use professional background check services to streamline this verification, guaranteeing that results are thorough and accurate. A thorough employment verification can reveal insights into an applicant’s job performance, work ethic, and potential red flags that may influence hiring decisions. Typically, these checks take no more than a few days, enabling timely decisions. Furthermore, confirming employment history not just validates the information on resumes but additionally plays an essential role in reducing turnover. This guarantees that you select the right candidate for your organization, ultimately supporting a more stable and productive workforce. Educational Credential Validation Confirming educational credentials is a crucial aspect of the hiring process, as it guarantees that candidates possess the necessary qualifications for the positions they seek. Employers must verify various details to confirm accuracy and authenticity: Attendance dates: Confirming when candidates attended their educational institutions. Graduation status: Verifying candidates actually graduated and received their degrees. Specific degrees conferred: Validating the exact qualifications claimed by the applicant. Specialized knowledge: Evaluating if the educational background meets the job’s requirements. This validation process is particularly critical for roles that demand specialized knowledge, where relevant degrees or certifications are mandatory for job performance. By conducting thorough educational verification, companies can prevent hiring unqualified candidates and mitigate the risks associated with negligent hiring practices. Many background check services specialize in this process, streamlining it and guaranteeing compliance with legal standards regarding information access. Identity Verification After validating educational credentials, the next step in the background screening process involves identity verification. This vital step typically confirms an applicant’s identity using Social Security Number (SSN) traces, which helps prevent fraudulent claims. The verification process can be completed in as little as 90 seconds and serves as a foundation for further checks, such as criminal history or employment records. Accurate identity verification is fundamental for employers to mitigate hiring risks associated with identity theft and impersonation. To guarantee compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), employers must protect consumer rights during this process. Furthermore, the verification may include checks against identity theft databases, revealing any discrepancies or alerts concerning the applicant’s identity. Professional License and Certification Checks Verifying that candidates possess the necessary professional licenses and certifications is critical for employers, particularly in regulated industries such as healthcare, engineering, and finance. These checks are crucial for confirming that individuals have the credentials required to perform specific job functions. Employers typically verify: The issuance and status of professional licenses through state licensing boards Any sanctions or disciplinary actions associated with a license Certification validity, confirming candidates have the requisite training Compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements Failing to conduct these verifications can lead to hiring unqualified individuals, which exposes employers to significant liability risks and compliance issues. By incorporating professional license and certification checks into their standard background screening processes, employers safeguard their operations and maintain high industry standards. In the end, these checks not just protect the company but also guarantee that qualified professionals deliver crucial services. Frequently Asked Questions What Do Companies Do for Background Checks? Companies perform background checks to guarantee potential employees meet their standards. They verify criminal records to assess safety risks, check employment history for accuracy, and confirm educational qualifications. Identity verification is essential to prevent fraud, whereas social media screening helps gauge an applicant’s online behavior and fit within the company culture. Each step aims to provide an all-encompassing view of the candidate, guaranteeing informed hiring decisions that align with organizational values and needs. What Are Jobs Looking for When They Do a Background Check? When jobs conduct background checks, they’re primarily evaluating your criminal history, employment history, and educational qualifications. They want to guarantee you haven’t been involved in activities that could jeopardize workplace safety or integrity. Verifying your previous roles helps confirm your honesty and qualifications. Furthermore, they check your identity to prevent fraud. Some employers even review your social media presence to gauge your communication skills and cultural fit within the organization. What Would Cause a Red Flag on a Background Check? Several factors can raise a red flag during a background check. Criminal convictions related to violence or fraud often cause concern. Inconsistencies in your employment history may suggest dishonesty. Gaps in your work history without a solid explanation can indicate instability. Furthermore, unprofessional social media behavior, like inflammatory posts, might negatively impact perceptions of your suitability. Finally, negative feedback from references about your job performance can signal potential risks to employers. What Is the Hardest Background Check to Pass? 7. I’m on vacation. Here are some past letters that I’m making new again, rather than leaving them to wilt in the archives. 1. My daughter’s managers complained to me about her work My daughter is 19 but lives at home. She has had a full-time job at a local daycare center ever since graduating high school. I dropped by her place of employment the other day to tell her something. All three managers were in the front office. I smiled and greeted them with, “Hi. How’s it going?” I was shocked when, instead of the standard response, I got a barrage of complaints from all three about my daughter’s work performance. Apparently, she’s been repeatedly written up for neglect of safety issues with the toddlers in her care and lack of proper sanitation of her classroom. They gave details as to the disciplinary action and warnings they’d given her in the past six months, how many times she’d been written up, how they were at their wit’s end with her, and how close she was to being fired. I glazed over almost immediately. Seriously, how is this my problem? My daughter is an adult. It seemed that by sharing these issues with me, they somehow expect me to punish her for her workplace sins. I let them know in no uncertain terms that my daughter is their problem when she’s at work, and it’s their job to deal with her performance issues in whatever way they see fit, including termination. They were clearly offended at my response. Isn’t what these managers did illegal? Or at the very least unethical and unprofessional? Doesn’t an employee have some expectation of privacy in the workplace? At the very least to not have the contents of their personnel file shared with those without a need to know? Who tattles to an employee’s mommy regarding said employee’s work performance? Am I missing something? It’s not illegal; in the U.S., there’s no right to privacy with this kind of work information. But it’s certainly unprofessional and inappropriate, and I’m glad you told them they should be managing their employee rather than complaining to her mom. (And really, if they’re that frustrated with her, they have a variety of tools available to deal with that, including letting her go.) It sounds like they were hoping you’d add to their pressure on her — maybe talk some sense into her or otherwise use your influence to get her to improve her performance. But she’s an adult and that’s not an appropriate thing for them to ask an employee’s parent. (Frankly, even if she weren’t an adult, it would still be inappropriate. They need to manage her.) – 2020 2. My boss jokes about me having work “suitors” I work in a clubhouse for a community with a high volume of lonely old people. I have always been a conversationalist, and I don’t mind lending an ear when people want to talk, since it’s part of my job. I have a handful of people who I really click with, who I talk to for about an hour whenever they come in. We talk about things like music, fine foods, history, and their youth. It’s incredibly nice and I love that I get to do this professionally. My boss jokes constantly about my “boyfriends.” It never really bothered me, and I chuckled along, but now when she introduces me to other employees or volunteers, she always brings it up and makes it sound inappropriate. Many of the people in my “fan club,” as it’s affectionately called by my boss, are older men who are retired and usually single. I have a couple older women as well who I chat with. I don’t wear anything revealing at work and our conversations never go anywhere innappropriate. I never see them outside of work and they have never done anything out of line in any way. My boss knows my SO, and tells them about how I’m cheating with my “boyfriends.” They laugh it off because I’ve explained and talked about them before, but it still seems odd. I felt weirdly guilty when she was telling a new person at work about my many “suitors.” I work in hospitality, so I’m always charming, attentive, and polite. I’ve had residents make sexual comments about my figure in the past, and I quickly told them that that is not appropriate and told my boss immediately. She said that I did the right thing by telling them that it was not correct. I feel like I’m getting mixed messages. I don’t know how to address this with my boss without making things awkward with her. The next time she does it when it’s just the two of you, say this: “Jane, can I ask you not to joke about me having ‘boyfriends’ or ’suitors’ here? I know you’re kidding, but it makes me uncomfortable.” If she’s a good person, she’ll hear this and stop. But if she continues, it’s okay to be firmer about it: “I was really serious when I asked you not to do that. It feels really uncomfortable to be talked about that way.” You could add, “You were so supportive in the past when I had harassment issues, and so I know you will be sensitive about this now that you realize how much it bothers me.” (Often framing things that way will make people want to live up to what you tell them you “know” about them.) I hear you on not wanting to make things awkward with your boss (even though she is the one making things awkward!) but you should be able to say this and then briskly return to whatever else you talk about. With awkwardness around this kind of thing, most people, even managers, will take their cues from you and if you demonstrate that you’ve moved on, chances are high she will too. And for what it’s worth, in addition to this being unwelcome on your side, I’ve never understood why this sort of comment isn’t also seen as diminishing to the older people it references, since the subtext seems to be that age desexualizes people and it feels like a weird patronizing head pat in their direction. – 2020 Read an update to this letter here. 3. Employer asked me for my SAT scores when I applied for a director-level role This week I applied for a director-level role and the application asked me for my SAT scores. It has been about 15 years since I took them and I know the scoring has changed since then, but I gave a good estimate of what I remembered my scores being. I applied because it seemed like a very interesting role, but then they came back and asked me to fill out a questionnaire in which I was asked to fill out the SAT score field again, as if I didn’t tell them what my score was on the application just 24 hours ago. Is it normal to ask for my SAT scores, especially if it’s for a director role? It seems like an easy way discriminate based on age, particularly since they also ask you to indicate whether your score is out of 2400 or 1600 (when I took the test, the highest score was a 1600). Also, I’m not exactly sure what my SAT score has to do with my qualifications for the job as it pertains to knowledge and skill. Am I right to raise an eyebrow at this? Or is it common? An informal poll of my network found that most people I know have never been asked for this, and this is the first time I have been asked. No, it’s not normal. It’s actually quite weird. It’s one thing to use something like GPA when candidates are right out of school and don’t have much of a work history to point to; in that case, it’s an attempt to get some data on candidates who don’t have much of a track record otherwise. But even that stops being useful once people advance in their careers and you can look at their actual work accomplishments. SAT scores at a director-level role? No. Weird, not normal, and indicative of some very strange thinking going on there. – 2017 4. I was hurt when the person I’m covering for maternity leave attended our Christmas lunch I’m filling a maternity leave role with the agreement in place that I will be hired full-time. Over the holiday season, our unit had a Christmas lunch and when we showed up at the venue, the person I’m replacing (who is still on her maternity leave) was there waiting to join us for lunch. I think it’s quite nice of my employer to include her, but I felt a little taken aback as I was not expecting her to be there. I have never worked at a company where they invited people who were on leave for any reason to events like this. Maybe that’s because this is the first office that I’ve worked in where within a month of starting I haven’t felt “accepted” within my unit’s circle. I’ve had very positive feedback from my manager on my work performance, but I feel very lonely at work. Perhaps this is why it felt insensitive to me, as I don’t feel accepted, yet any time “Betty” shows up it’s a big deal. Again, I think it was nice but I can’t help feel this was a little insensitive towards me. I would be interested to read your reply. It’s not unusual to invite former employees or employees who are on leave to office social events; it’s actually a really nice gesture! I’m sure that no one meant it to make you uncomfortable; after all, she isn’t your competition or someone who got you fired or anything like that. People might have even thought you’d enjoy the opportunity to talk. I think the bigger issue is that you’re feeling lonely at work — but I wouldn’t take offense at their invitation to someone who’s still officially part of their team or see it as a reflection on you in any way. – 2015 The post daughter’s manager complained to me about her work, boss jokes about me having work “suitors,” and more appeared first on Ask a Manager. 21. Lululemon Athletica‘s founder Chip Wilson said on Monday he had launched a proxy fight by nominating three independent directors to the company’s board, just over two weeks after the apparel maker announced the exit of CEO Calvin McDonald without a clear successor. Lululemon shares have shed nearly half their value this year as the company struggles to find its footing with younger and affluent shoppers, while battling stiff competition from fast-growing newer rivals such as Alo Yoga and Vuori, as well as pressure from activist investor Elliott Management. Wilson has nominated three director candidates to Lululemon’s board, including former On Running co-CEO Marc Maurer, former ESPN Chief Marketing Officer Laura Gentile and former Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg. The board installed Chief Financial Officer Meghan Frank and Chief Commercial Officer André Maestrini as interim co-CEOs while they search for a permanent replacement. Reuters had reported that Elliott Management, which disclosed a $1 billion stake in the company earlier this month, had been working closely for months with former Ralph Lauren executive Jane Nielsen for a potential CEO role. When asked whether Wilson was teaming up with activist investor Elliott in pushing for the board change, a person familiar with Wilson’s thinking said he was not working with any other investor. At the same time, Elliott’s campaign for a new CEO would not interfere with his plans, the person added, asking not to be named. Wilson had spoken to Nielsen, but any CEO selected by the company before board changes would not have Wilson’s support, the source said. “The recent CEO change announcement was the third total failure of board oversight, with no clear succession plan in place. Shareholders have no faith that this board can select and support the next CEO without input from a board with stronger product experience,” Wilson said in a statement. Lululemon did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The company’s shares rose about 1% in morning trading. “Adding three new board members seems like something that Lululemon would be willing to do. It might keep Wilson from constantly attacking the board, at least. The nominees appear to be fine, although only one of the three (Maurer) has direct experience in Lululemon’s industry,” Morningstar analyst David Swartz said. Wilson likely did not ask for a board seat for himself as he owns a significant stake in Lululemon’s competitor Amer Sports, Swartz added. The Wall Street Journal first reported about Wilson launching a proxy fight against Lululemon’s board earlier in the day. Wilson’s history with Lululemon Wilson is one of the biggest independent shareholders of Lululemon, with a 4.27% stake as of December 2025, according to LSEG data. The yogawear maker’s founder had previously called for an urgent search for a CEO to replace McDonald, led by new, independent directors with a deep knowledge of the company to restore a “product-first” mindset at the company. This is not the first time Wilson has pushed for changes at Lululemon’s board. After founding the apparel company in 1998, Wilson withdrew from daily operations in 2012 and resigned as chairman a year later following a recall of see-through yoga pants that led to the departures of top executives amid a public-relations storm. He also quit the director post in 2015 after clashing with the board over strategy. However, a proxy fight was averted after Wilson agreed to sell about half of his 27% stake to private-equity firm Advent International for $845 million in return for two additional director positions. —Juveria Tabassum, Sanskriti Shekhar, and Anuja Bharat Mistry, Reuters View the full article

Many resolutions also focus on financial goals, such as paying off credit card debt, saving for a new house, or simply getting more educated about money. “New Year’s is a really good time to review and realign your financial goals overall,” said Erica Grundza, certified financial planner at Betterment, an investing and savings app. When building your goals for 2026, Grundza recommends focusing less on the past and more on an optimistic, yet realistic, vision for the future. She recommends that you focus on reestablishing the “why” behind your approach to money and how you want to make it work for your life. This can be as simple as saving $10 each week in a savings account, or a bigger goal like saving to buy a house in the coming years. It’s all about your own journey. The Associated Press spoke with people who are making financial resolutions for 2026. Here’s a look at what they’re planning and how you can draw inspiration for your own resolutions: Making achievable plans Resolutions can easily turn into unattainable goals that feel more like a dream, said MarieYolaine Toms, a coach and founder of Focused Fire, a financial coaching company. To avoid setting unrealistic expectations, Toms follows a “no resolutions” mindset and instead focuses on making an actionable plan. “What I say every year is that I am not making resolutions, I’m making plans that can be tracked forward, traced back, and tweaked until completion,” Toms said. Recently, Toms encouraged her clients to check their credit report with the three credit bureaus and, based on their credit reports, make an attainable plan to start a savings account. For example, adding $25 to their savings account every week. Whether you’re trying to pay off debt or save for a vacation abroad, the first step towards making a plan can be creating a budget. When making a budget, it’s best to find a technique that works for you, whether it’s the classic 50/30/20 plan or another budgeting style. If you’re building a budget for the first time, you can find some expert recommendations here. Paying off debt After losing her job as a magazine editor in September, Rachel Pelovitz, 33, had to take a closer look at her finances. Having acquired a significant amount of debt over the last few years due to her husband’s year-and-a-half-long unemployment, Pelovitz explored several options to pay it off. Ultimately, Pelovitz and her husband chose to sell their house and work with a debt consolidation organization. “Rather than rely on getting more debt, we are currently selling our house,” Pelovitz said. Pelovitz’s main goal for 2026 is to pay off half of her credit card debt. And, with some of the money from selling the house, start investing moderately. If you’ve also experienced a layoff, you can read expert recommendations to help you take care of your finances and your mental health here. Building a savings account For Jenni Lee, 27, this is going to be the year when she gets strict about building her savings account. While Lee considers herself generally good with money, over the last six months she has overspent and wants to rein it in. The long-term goal for her savings journey is for Lee to buy a house. “I’m now in my late 20s, I’m starting to really think about where I pinch now so it won’t hurt later when I finally decide to purchase and own a place,” said Lee, a tech worker and lifestyle TikTok creator based in Chicago. As she saves for her future home and possibly a trip to South Korea, Lee wants to cut unnecessary spending on clothing items and eating out. Social media microtrends are a common influence on people’s shopping decisions, and this can lead to overspending. If you’re looking to avoid spending money on microtrends, you can find experts’ recommendations here. Building an emergency fund If you are in a position to do so, having multiple financial goals you’re working towards at the same time can be a great way to speed up your progress. For Worcester resident Melanie Duarte, 23, her New Year’s money goals include paying off her student loans and credit card debt while building an emergency fund. “I made sure to include it in my budget, even if it’s something as small as like $50. I just want to make sure I still put something in (my emergency fund) so that it eventually multiplies,” said Duarte, who owns a marketing agency. Duarte’s family didn’t speak openly about finances when she was growing up. But, since she opened her own business, Duarte has been slowly working on rewriting her relationship with money. If you’re looking to start an emergency fund or create better habits while you save, you can read some experts’ recommendations here. Finding balance Finding a balance between saving for your long-term goals while also making sure you enjoy your money is important, but it can also be challenging. After the death of her grandfather just a few years after retirement, Tiana Stewart, 26, felt that he didn’t get to enjoy the fruits of his labor. So, this past year, Stewart decided to enjoy her life and travel. “I do understand saving for retirement is important, but I also want to enjoy my life and the money that I work for at this time, especially being in my 20s,” said Stewart, who lives in Maryland. But now, as she reflects on her financial future, Stewart wants to focus on paying off debt, saving, and investing. Having a healthy balance between enjoying life and saving for the future is what she wants to work toward. For some, participating in budgeting challenges such as the no-buy year can be a great way to set boundaries on your spending and set aside money towards your financial goals. Many people start such challenges at the beginning of the year and commit to keep going until the end, but others start with a no-buy month. __ The Associated Press receives support from Charles Schwab Foundation for educational and explanatory reporting to improve financial literacy.
