Apple Just Changed the Way You AirDrop With Strangers
AirDrop is one of Apple's best features. I use it on a daily basis to share files between my various Apple devices, but it really shines when I'm sharing stuff with other people, or vice versa. It can be tricky to find a quick solution to send larger files. Emails have too low a file size limit, chat apps can compress files, and cloud storage can fill up fast, but AirDrop is simple, built-in, and reliable. It even works with Android now, albeit just the Pixel 10. If AirDrop has one flaw, it's that it's not particularly easy to use with strangers. Apple has changed how this side of AirDrop works over the years. For the longest time, you had two AirDrop settings: "Contacts Only," which only lets your saved contacts find your device for AirDropping files, and "Everyone," which leaves your AirDrop open to anyone with an iPhone to send you stuff. This was convenient when you needed to share files with strangers, but inconvenient if you left it on: Anyone with an iPhone could see your iPhone and send you anything—like, say, a bomb threat while on an airplane. Not good. Then, Apple changed this latter functionality to "Everyone for 10 Minutes." Ever since, if you want to open up your AirDrop to people outside your contacts, you have to manually enable this toggle, which will only stay open for, well, 10 minutes. After that, it switches back to "Contacts Only." That's an improvement in security, but not in convenience. If you're ever in a situation where you need to AirDrop something to someone relatively frequently but you don't want to add their contact to your iPhone, you'll be switching back to "Everyone for 10 Minutes" every 10 minutes. iOS 26.2, Apple's newest iPhone update at the time of this writing, introduces a solution—AirDrop codes. This feature forces anyone not saved in your contacts who wants to share something with you via AirDrop to ask for a one-time code first. Once you share that code, that user is temporarily saved on your iPhone for 30 days, allowing you to AirDrop repeatedly without issue. After those 30 days are up, the user leaves your iPhone, and you don't need to worry about pruning your Contacts app down the line. (This same functionality also applies to AirDrop on iPadOS 26.2 and macOS 26.2.) How to AirDrop with strangers using AirDrop codesHere's how this new AirDrop experience works with strangers going forward. Let's say you're at a conference and you meet someone who wants to send you some relevant materials via AirDrop. You set your AirDrop settings to "Everyone for 10 Minutes," they see your contact, and attempt to send you the file. On your end, you see the request, with a "Continue" option: Once you tap it, you'll see the AirDrop code on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. You can tell the code to the sender, who can enter it on their device. If successful, the file will be shared like any other AirDrop interaction. As stated above, this allows you to AirDrop with this contact for 30 days without needing to bother with another AirDrop code. But if you're done sharing with the stranger for good, you can remove their temporary contact early. Head to the Contacts app, hit the back button in the top left if applicable to head to Lists, then choose Other Known. Here, you'll see any temporary contacts generated from previous AirDrop sessions, which you can delete ahead of that 30 day deadline. Inside the stunning collapse of Believer Meats, the $600 million lab-grown meat startup
Last month, Believer Meats was basking in acclaim. The startup had just secured final U.S. government approval for what it billed as Earth’s largest cultivated-meat facility, a $125 million complex near Raleigh, North Carolina. Boosters hailed the plant’s role in strengthening U.S. competitiveness in the race to grow meat from cells—a sector long dominated by Israel. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) called it “a major economic win for the state and region.” Believer Meats CEO Gustavo Burger said he was thrilled about the facility’s opening, calling it a “major milestone” that would redefine the future of food. “Boom,” he wrote on LinkedIn, announcing that the company was set to begin commercial production of its flagship lab-grown chicken. “Here’s to the next chapter!” That chapter lasted roughly two weeks. Today, the 200,000-square-foot facility’s fancy bioreactors and centrifuges sit quiet. In an all-hands meeting over Microsoft Teams on December 1, a tearful Burger informed staff that Believer was ceasing operations and laying everybody off. “The worst day of my career,” he told employees, according to people on the call who spoke with me under anonymity so as not to harm their future work prospects. A major financial backer had pulled out, leaving management scurrying to secure a last-ditch loan, which was also denied. The startup, valued at $600 million in 2021, would be closing shop before putting a single lab-grown chicken strip into a consumer’s hand. It had just posted an ad for a new plant manager. It is a stunning collapse for one of the sector’s most promising players. Founded by Hebrew University biomedical engineer Yaakov Nahmias, Believer rose on the promise of being the first company to turn cell-based meat into a low-cost commodity. By 2021, it had raised $347 million from giants like Archer Daniels Midland and Tyson Foods. After opening what it called the world’s first commercial cultured-meat factory in Rehovot, close to Tel Aviv, the company began scouting U.S. sites for a far larger facility. Additional money came from the prominent food investment firm S2G Ventures; Neto Group, one of Israel’s largest food conglomerates; and Bits x Bites, a Chinese foodtech accelerator. In 2024, Jeff Bezos donated $30 million to help Believer create the North Carolina State University Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein. This past summer, Believer became the fifth cultured-meat startup to secure a “no questions” safety letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, putting it alongside Upside Foods, cell-based salmon maker Wildtype, Mission Barns (whose pork meatballs just became the first cultured meat sold in U.S. grocery stores), and Eat Just (which five years ago sold the world’s first cultured chicken, in Singapore). In September, Believer announced that it had completed the plant’s construction. The facility boasted a bioreactor that it said would revolutionize animal biomass in the same way Ford’s assembly line revolutionized automobiles. For phase one of operations, the plant would be able to produce 21 million pounds of chicken per year, at a cost of $8.50 to $10 a pound. “Hundreds of thousands of people could potentially try it,” Believer’s chief product and growth officer Heather Hudson said, “making it more accessible not just for a certain demographic, but for most people.” Capacity was designed to double, eventually, to 42 million pounds, and Believer claimed that a price point of under $7 per pound was in view. Believer Meats comes to an end The alternative meat protein industry has long operated in a Silicon Valley–style reality distortion field, one that ignores the stubborn physics of the real world. Eat Just founder Josh Tetrick, who built the eggless mayonnaise brand Just Mayo, told Better Meat Co. founder Paul Shapiro, for his 2018 bestselling book Clean Meat, that Eat Just—Just Mayo’s parent company—would be “the world’s largest meat company” by the year 2030. A think tank predicted that demand for cow products would fall by 70% by that same year. Believer had made bold statements of its own, particularly about its own success with reducing costs, the biggest hurdle standing in lab-made meat’s way. In 2021, Nahmias noted that Believer was cultivating chicken breast for $7.70 per pound, down from $18 six months earlier—a price decrease that seemed to validate the sector’s meteoric hype. It was a massive improvement from 2013, when a team of scientists led by Mark Post, founder of Leonardo DiCaprio-backed Mosa Meat, served the first cultured burger through the help of an eye-popping $330,000 investment from Google’s Sergey Brin. At the time, Nahmias called Brin’s $330,000 hamburger “probably the silliest idea I’ve ever heard.” Last month, Nahmias’s lab published a study in Nature Food outlining a new method for dividing cow cells that doesn’t require gene-editing. Estimating that beef produced this way would cost in the range of $7 to $10 per pound, Nahmias declared it “a true ‘eureka’ moment,” overturning decades of assumptions about bovine cell biology. Believer ran out of cash two weeks later. According to insiders, the company is currently seeking a buyer or some alternative structure that would allow the business to continue in some form. It’s unclear if any top level executives remain. But some people in senior management, like chief product and growth officer Heather Hudson, reportedly left Believer just weeks before the layoffs. Believer employees were not offered severance. Worse, the final pay period passed without them receiving paychecks. By law, employers laying off their workforce with a headcount of at least 100 must either warn employees 60 days in advance, or pay them for 60 additional days. Interview requests I sent in early December to the Believer communications department and to CEO Gustavo Burger have gone unreturned, including queries about the company’s actual headcount at the time of its collapse. Believer had said that the North Carolina facility would employ 100 people, and additional team members worked from its Chicago headquarters. The company’s LinkedIn page listed the workforce as being between 50 and 200. Big tours and taste tests Built by Gray Construction—a firm that has handled warehouses for Mercedes-Benz, Caterpillar, and Walmart—Believer’s North Carolina facility had been in its windup phase, called “commissioning” in industry-speak. Former employees tell me that the target date for shipping the first finished chicken products to Believer’s co-packer had been tentatively set for early spring. The initial customers were going to be wholesale restaurant partners. But the plant reportedly ran into operational issues. Former employees describe glycol leaks, improperly welded pipes, and cooling problems that delayed the timeline by weeks at a time. Believer reportedly hired an outside contractor to fix issues more quickly. Two sources told me that construction delays were a significant obstacle to progress. In November, Believer held a town hall meeting during which attendees say executives hinted at financial trouble. A funding round deemed “mission-critical” was underway, they explained; much suddenly seemed to hinge on its success. Former workers say that in recent months, big tours and taste tests had been organized for well-dressed groups of prospective financial suitors. On December 1, Burger told the staff via Teams that the company was kaput. The evening, an outsider who’d been rooting for the company’s success reached out to me to share that Believer had closed the plant. A few days later, Gray filed a legal complaint demanding $34 million for the outstanding debt that Believer owes for the facility. The brutal efficiency of the bird In the meantime, the faucet that practically gushed money has slowed to a drip. According to the alt-protein trade group Good Food Institute, funding to cultivated-meat companies has shrunk from $1.38 billion in 2021 to just $139 million in 2024. Upside Foods suffered two rounds of layoffs in 2024, and a third major restructuring in March. A decade after also encountering labeling disputes, regulatory setbacks, and other problems with Just Mayo, Eat Just switched the chicken it’s selling in Singapore to a 3% cultivated chicken, 97% plant-based protein hybrid product, and meanwhile got sued for more than $100 million by bioreactor partner ABEC for unpaid bills. ABEC alleges that Eat Just was “woefully undercapitalized from the beginning.” Even cultured meat’s most vocal cheerleader, Paul Shapiro, has staked his company Better Meat Co.’s future not on lab-grown cells, but on a “complete protein” made from mycelium. Then there is Meati, which by 2025 had secured $400 million in funding and was selling its alt-steaks in 7,000 stores nationwide. It was reportedly headed toward bankruptcy by last spring (after a protracted IP dispute, incidentally, with Better Meat Co.). Yasir Abdul—an infomercial entrepreneur who made his fortune selling belts, car dash cams, shoe insoles, and Drain Buddy hair catchers on late-night TV—took control of the company in a fire sale. In a press release, he asserted that “when startups and founders build a brand, they have tunnel vision,” but Meati would tap into new growth by harnessing the power of direct-to-consumer sales: “As Seen On TV products are available in all major retailers across the world.” And yet cultured-animal players are hardly the only names struggling in alt-meat. Beyond Meat once traded at $230 a share after its 2019 IPO, with a market cap of $14 billion. This summer, CEO Ethan Brown told me that the company was reorienting the brand to highlight vegetables as pure, clean ingredients instead of existing as a sort of not-meat—to the point of dropping “Meat” from the name. But after reporting a $100 million loss for the third quarter of 2025, Beyond’s stock price slid to less than $1 a share. In June, Impossible Foods CEO Peter McGuinness warned his company was mulling a burger that was half real beef. For the past decade, the percentage of Americans identifying as vegetarian and vegan largely hasn’t changed. Yet during this same period, spending on plant-based foods doubled, from less than $4 billion in the mid-2010s to more than $8 billion today. The gap is explained by meat eaters behaving like vegans part-time. But this group is less ethically bound to the diet. Externalities like taste, price, and cultural trends can push these consumers back to more conventional meat options. In fact, amid continued inflation, sales of plant-based foods fell in 2024. Cultured meat, in particular, is crashing into the brutal efficiency of the bird. Chicken is the most common meat to try to cultivate, and the modern broiler chicken is the cheapest form of animal muscle meat. Disruptors like Believer are asking consumers to pay $8 per pound for a product that tastes and looks different, while a rotisserie chicken at Costco costs $4.99. Meanwhile, mainstream consumers are pursuing “natural” products more than ever. Food has landed in the crosshairs of a growing cultural pushback against artificial slop. Products that veer into an Uncanny Valley of food are therefore at a special risk. Impossible Foods CEO McGuinness captured this well at the recent World Economy Summit in October. Here are 15 of my favorite stories you shared about holidays at work over the past month. 1. The succulent For several years I managed a team who were all at individual satellite offices. During my site visits over the holidays, I gave them all little gift baskets which included a small, fake succulent (most of the offices didn’t have windows). On a subsequent visit about six months later, I found out that one employee had been watering hers every day, and was proud to show me how healthy it still looked. Fortunately, she thought it was hilarious when she found out it was artificial, and it brought the whole team a lot of joy. 2. The panda onesie Our new vice president, after a tumultuous and unpopular first year in her role, hosted a holiday party for her whole division at a local upscale steakhouse. We received no less than six emails leading up to the party getting ever more specific about the dress code. First it was just holiday sweaters. Then, the mandate that our sweaters be “Company Name-Licious,” and somehow increasingly downhill from there in service of taking a perfect photo for the holiday card we send out annually to stakeholders. My director, who after over 20 years at the institution announced his early retirement right before the party (largely because of said vice president’s shenanigans), decided to go out with a bang. Right before we were all corralled together for the carefully cultivated “look at our happy work family having fun photo,” he slipped out of the dining room and returned dressed in a full-body adult pajama panda onesie. Nobody said anything as the picture was taken, but the looks exchanged were priceless!! Maybe the vice president didn’t have the verbiage on the spot to publicly ask one of her directors to change out of panda pajamas. (Understandable. Who among us is prepared for that?) Maybe she thought he would say “just kidding,” change, and her prize photo would go on (He didn’t. Fully committed to the bit). Needless to say, the photo didn’t make it to the holiday card, but remains a cherished memory for those of us our legendary director left behind. 3. The harp A couple of years ago, my boss had a Very Fancy Christmas drinks at his house, complete with musicians, waiters, the lot. It was also my third day on the job as the (then) youngest person at the company, and I proceeded to get absolutely hammered. I woke up the next morning remembering a couple of bad incidents – including kissing my boss on the cheek to say goodbye and spilling wine all over the carpet – but the worst blow came about six months after the party where I was informed that at one point I’d tried to play the harp. Until that point, I would have sworn up and down that I’d never touched a harp in my life. The next one is tomorrow, so wish me luck. 4. The cover story Fifteen+ years ago, I worked with Ben and Jen, who were clearly having an affair. She reported to him, he was married, and they were “best friends.” At our holiday party, they disappeared. I walked through the parking lot with a coworker and we saw them in his car fully making out. To our credit, and my surprise, we didn’t say anything at the time. She was later fired for stealing money, and he quit a few months later. A few years ago, another former colleague ran into Jen who proceeded to joke about how “funny” it was that we all thought she was sleeping with Ben, “even though they weren’t.” My friend said, “Someone saw you making out at a holiday party.” Jen didn’t even miss a beat and responded, “I guess I have to change my story.” 5. The putt putt course I worked in a law office where, at the holiday party (basically, hors d’oeuvres in the conference room on a Friday with our comprehensive bar open to all comers), someone set up a 36-hole golf course that wound through the entire firm. We were given putters, a ball (which we marked with a colored Sharpie), a scorecard, and then set out to drive for show and putt for dough — well, presents. This after we’d all had a few. Technically, many, many more than a few. Those who’ve worked in law offices know the litigators are always ready to party, but that transactional lawyers, at year’s end, are laboring to close deals that clients want done for tax reasons. This means there’s usually a group of transactional lawyers and their harried staff grinding away while everyone else is carrying on at the holiday party. This was no different, except that the transactional teams were confined to the offices on the floor below the main floor of the firm. This is relevant because the putt-putt setup required you to pick up your ball and take the elevator down to play middle 12 holes of the course on the floor below. Which seemed okay until some drunken associate banked his golf ball off a window, knocked over a transactional partner’s coffee cup, and soaked the latest contract draft. Nearby, two boisterous litigation partners got into a loud, not-so-friendly argument about whether the rules allowed gimme putts. Before the scene could descend further, a mature paralegal who had been with the firm since before dirt was a baby, strode through the offices, quietly removed putters and balls from all involved, and firmly instructed anyone who wasn’t on the transactional team to return to the conference room upstairs. She then locked the office suite’s doors behind us and, for good measure, hung a “golf course closed” sign on the exterior door. Later, I heard that the senior transactional partner gifted her a $250 bottle of single malt. 6. The elephant dung Our CEO is big on eco-friendly type gifts from charities. Frankly I would have been fine with them donating to literally anything in my name, but last year we got statues of rescue elephants made out of elephant dung. Not fresh, but like sculpted like clay and fired but no thank you. I’m not a big elephant or figure person and I’m an even less bigger shit person so that was fun. I’m excited to see what we get this year. Coprolites? Stationary made out of poop (that’s a thing)? Can’t wait. 7. The Funko Pop interrogation One year during a white elephant exchange at our staff party, I “stole” a Funko Pop from a coworker, who proceeded to throw a fit and grill me for an entire afternoon about why I needed it, what I was going to use it for, did I even know what it was, etc., etc., etc… 8. The revenge My team was pretty fractured. We had a manager who was your BFF until you became the Bad Employee, and everything in the job/company/world became Bad Employee’s fault until they quit in defeat. The manager’s friends in real life were on our team and were never the Bad Employee. She was a middle-aged Regina George. At one point Regina had left her zoom camera on unintentionally and she looked a mess. Hair in a bun, brown stained tank top, no makeup, just rolled out of bed. She was also vaping with an obviously THC vape pen. Jacinta, the current Bad Employee, took a screenshot of Regina during this meeting and just kept it in her pocket for MONTHS. Secret Santa meeting arrives and Regina opens her gift, from Jacinta, and it’s a custom printed coffee mug. With the photo of Regina on it. When Regina opened the box she said, “Oh a coffee mug?” and her face went through several shades of red and horror. But the COO attending the Secret Santa meeting with us said, “Oh a cute coffee mug? How fun! Let everyone see!” 9. The MLM I had a student bring me a gift. His mother was in an MLM that sold adult products. She had sent me some highly inappropriate “toys” and “lotions” with a card that said she’d love to have a party for me and “all my teacher friends.” Fortunately, I did not open this in front of the student and I’m hoping he never knew what was in the bag. 10. The decorations I was working in a newsroom at the time, and there were no accepted rules of behavior in a place where the photogs routinely slept on the floor so they could be first to the scene when the police scanner started popping off in the middle of the night. We all had assigned desks, and at Christmas everyone got a small fake tree and we had a “decorating contest.” Except that I thought it was lovely decorating and bought ornaments and tinsel … only to find that it was a deranged decorating contest. One of my coworkers topped her tree with the decapitated head of a one-eyed doll. Another got a box of donuts and stuck them all over the tree, leaving them there until they petrified. Others included cursed promotional items that got sent to us, like a tape measure specifically for measuring bust size, a body-positive doll who was naked and posed suggestively with the Grinch, and a rubber giraffe. These decorations stayed up until March. God, I miss that place. 11. Sharlene We had Secret Snowflake. There was a $25 cap, but we were meant to gift our Secret Snowflake something every day of the work week, so it was impossible to keep to the limit and no one kept to it. I would spend a minimum of $50-100. Anyway, there was one person, “Sharlene,” who thought she walked on water because her wedding went viral on TikTok. On her Secret Snowflake gift form, all of her gifts were designer brands. We were teachers. No one could afford that list. Not even admin. The unfortunate soul who did pull her name sent a student to deliver the first gift (a very nice, non-designer candle in Sharlene’s purported favorite sent). Sharlene sent the child back with the message to deliver: “I don’t accept trash. Give me cash or what I asked for or don’t bother.” Sharlene didn’t receive anything for the rest of the week. 12. The hard partiers In the early 2000s, I worked for a call center for a major auto manufacturer. When I started there, it was very professional, but as time went on there became more and more of a hard-partying culture. Cue the Christmas party: at a lovely hotel, unlimited beer and wine/cash bar for hard liquor, company discount on renting rooms overnight so no one drove drunk. Not being much of a party person, I left after dinner, but I heard the next week that they closed the party down earlier than planned due to drunken shenanigans. We were invited to choose somewhere else for the party the following year. You’d think that would have caused some reflection on the next year’s party plans, but instead the whole thing just moved to a different lovely hotel. This time there were arrests for lewd behavior in the hallways/stairwells. The year after that there was a single ticket for beer and wine and no cash bar. 13. The misunderstanding The White Elephant gift exchanges I did with friends were always jokes, you’d bring something that you had lying around and/or thought would be funny. That was always my understanding of the term. My first year at a job, I had two White Elephant gift exchanges, one with friends and one with coworkers. Nobody overlapped to both groups, so I decided to get two copies of the same joke gift to bring to both places: a framed, autographed photograph of my then-girlfriend and I. The white elephant group with my friends found the photo a hilarious gift, it got stolen multiple times, and the person who ended up with it actually hung it on their wall for a couple years. The work group brought nice gifts and so the person who opened my photo was completely baffled. Everybody gave me a weird look and I tried my best to stutter out an explanation of, “U,h yeah, White Elephant means joke gifts.” Made up for it as best as I could by trading it back in exchange for an actual gift so nobody got stuck with it, but even so, people definitely were not thrilled. Next year’s email announcement of the gift exchange did not include the term “White Elephant” but did include detailed instructions about acceptable gifts. 14. The tree decorating contest I worked for a large museum. One year, management announced that each department would be given a miniature (12 inches) tree to decorate to showcase their work. All the trees would displayed at the staff Christmas party and a winner would be announced. The winning tree would be displayed at the main ticket desk and the winning department would get a catered lunch. The Restoration department went all out making a toolbox themed tree. Multiple senior staff, all dedicated and experienced craftspeople, worked on it over lunches for two weeks. One of them brought in jeweler’s tools from home to make the metal parts, like the saw blade. Handles were painted and varnished. Someone even braided embroidery floss to make tiny garlands. The end result was exquisite. At the Christmas party, everyone was oohing and ahhing over it, and the staff responsible were very pleased with themselves. It was far and away the most beautiful and an obvious labor of love. When it came time for the winners to be announced, the much-hated director of HR stood up and announced that the Visitor Services department had won! They had decorated their tree by cutting faces out of museum brochures and sticking them into the branches. It was pretty clearly a last-minute and low-effort project. To make matters worse, the head of Visitor Services stood up and made a speech like she was accepting an Oscar. In her speech, she talked about how much she loved Christmas and broke down into tears. She then tried to lead us all in song while sobbing (happy?) tears of emotion. I am Jewish and was already quietly annoyed at attending an explicitly Christmas-themed work party, but I was definitely not the only one confused and uncomfortable. She was crying too hard to really sing clearly and everyone was just looking at each other, not knowing what do. Eventually the head of HR came up and led her away and restarted the party. After, debate raged about whether visitor services’ tree had been chosen because the department was much smaller than restoration, and therefore cheaper to buy lunch for, or HR had just thought having a “we love our visitors!” themed tree in the lobby was a good marketing move. Restoration was widely agree to have been robbed. When the Christmas tree contest was announced the next year, most of Restoration refused to be involved. Department head said that we couldn’t hand in an empty tree, but that he wouldn’t begrudge an extremely minimal effort. A couple of the younger guys in the department decided to lean aggressively into the “Die Hard is a Christmas movie” trope. They stuck a lego helicopter and a paper cutout of Bruce Willis into the branches, and then made a paper tree skirt with stamped red footprints. I believe they had to be talked out of making a “Yipee-kay-yay mother-f***ers” banner. It was displayed at the Christmas party with all the other trees, and everyone knew it was an F-you to management, but it still won an honorable mention. Apparently, the department head told HR that if Restoration didn’t win something there would be riots. Additionally, in an apparent act of blue-collar solidarity, the Security department had decorated their tree with American flags because “we’re very patriotic, and it was never specified WHICH holiday the tree should be decorated for so we obviously chose the 4th of July.” Restoration refused to display the honorable mention certificate in the department break room, and the tree decorating contest was not held again. 15. The petting zoo party My employer has historically had their holiday parties at local attractions — the zoo, a brewery, etc. The parties are never great, but at least you don’t have to cook dinner and there’s dessert. Last year, the party was also at a local attraction that isn’t just a petting zoo, but I would say that’s what most people remember it as. The email invite did not say whether or not there would be animals at our party, so I emailed to ask. No. Too cold for the animals. Sure. My coworkers and I generally enjoy a good time, so we decided to go. Dear reader, we should have taken our cue from the animals. This holiday party was not a good time, in any way, shape, or form. Turns out the attraction had a drive-through Christmas lights thing open to the public, and it was very popular. For unknown reasons, one of the two roads that led to the attraction was completely blocked off. We party-goers had to make our way along with the rest of the masses down one very long, very dark road. It took me 20 minutes to go less than a quarter of a mile. After parking, we were told to take the tram up to the place where the party was being held. It was winter in the midwest, and bitterly cold. The tram departed as I was walking up, and I had to wait in the open air for 10 minutes for another tram. A tram that had no windows or doors. That drove very slowly over a surprisingly long distance so that we too could see the Christmas lights. That was playing Christmas music from a Christian radio station that had ads in between the songs advocating for the pro-life movement. We were finally deposited outside the venue, which turned out to be a large, enclosed tent with some space heaters inside. Warmer after the tram ride, but not warm. There was some food, but not a whole lot. There was some alcohol and hot (actually mildly warm) chocolate, but the hot chocolate quickly ran out. No desserts. I sat bundled in my coat and scarf with my one coworker who had already arrived. Another coworker had decided to abandon us when she saw the traffic and went back home. A third was still en route, having tried to come via the road which was blocked off and was having to go all the way around the attraction to the other road. My coworker and I sat and mingled with other folks, ate our not-great dinner, drank our single cups of mildly-warm chocolate, and bemoaned the lack of desserts. We decided we could not betray our third coworker and leave early, so we waited another 30 minutes for her to make it to the venue, and then another 20 while she ate her not-great dinner, bemoaned the fact that the mildly-warm chocolate was gone, and cursed the fact that there were still no desserts. Our executive director stood up and gave a long-winded talk about how were such a great team and how this was such a great party. We left as soon as he stopped talking and took another tram, also open to the elements, an even longer distance on a more meandering route so we could see the rest of the Christmas lights. Someone must have complained about the radio, so there were no pro-life ads at least. It may have started raining? I can’t remember. As icing on a cake that was not even provided to us, the employee newsletter that week gave a big kudos to our executive director and his staff for putting on such a great holiday party. This year, presumably due to budget cuts and not complete embarrassment for last year’s effort, our holiday party has been relegated to a staff potluck during lunch next week. Since there is no room large enough to host us all, chairs will be scattered throughout the floor in conference rooms, the staff lounge, and some odd seating areas tucked in random corners. There is no sign up list, you can bring whatever you want — a complete free for all and complete disaster in the making. There will be no animals to pet, again, but at least it will be properly inside. Most Americans are fine with giving cash as holiday gifts, new poll finds
Welcome to exhausted America 2025: Most adults are more than a little fine with doling out cash as gifts, and many plan to be asleep before midnight on New Year’s Eve, according to a new AP-NORC poll. About 6 in 10 Americans say cash or gift cards are “very” acceptable as holiday presents, but they’re much less likely to say that about a gift that was purchased secondhand or re-gifted, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. “Cash is OK for the grandkids I guess,” said Nancy Wyant, 73, in rural central Iowa. “But I’m a gift giver.” Come New Year’s Eve, she’ll be fast asleep before 2026 rolls around. “At our age, we don’t do anything,” the retired bus driver said with a laugh of herself and her live-in partner. “He’s set in his ways.” They’ll be joined by the 44% of Americans who say they won’t stay up to greet 2026, according to the poll. About half of U.S. adults age 45 or older won’t make it to midnight, compared with around one-third of adults under age 45. Consider 23-year-old Otis Phillips in Seattle, an outlier for his age. He, too, will turn in early. “It’s one of the holidays that doesn’t really feel special to me,” said the master’s student. Most say cash makes an acceptable holiday gift Cash is a safer gift for younger adults. The poll found about two-thirds of Americans under 45 say cash is a “very” acceptable holiday gift, compared with 55% of adults age 45 or older. “Everything’s too expensive nowadays. And I don’t want to go buy a gift for somebody and then it turns out they don’t like it. So cash,” said Gabriel Antonucci, 26, a ski resort cook in Alaska, about an hour outside of Anchorage. Most people at least grudgingly accept various gift types, with about 9 in 10 saying cash or gift cards are at least “somewhat” acceptable and about 6 in 10 saying the same for secondhand gifts and re-gifted items. Teresa Pedroza, a 55-year-old mom of two adult sons in central Florida, is mostly not on board. “I don’t like it when kids say they want cash, or I should get teenagers gift cards,” she said. “It kind of takes some of the charm away from gift giving.” But she acknowledged reaching for cards a time or two out of convenience. About three-quarters of adults under age 45 say secondhand gifts are at least “somewhat” acceptable, compared with about 6 in 10 adults age 45 or older. About 4 in 10 adults age 45 or older say secondhand gifts are “somewhat” or “very” unacceptable. Many keep holiday decor up beyond the new year It’s not just your pesky neighbors who leave their holiday decorations up into January. About one-third of U.S. adults say they’ll leave them up after New Year’s Day. It’s more common for people to leave their decorations up after the holiday season than to put them up early, according to the poll. About 2 in 10 Americans say they put up holiday decorations before Thanksgiving. “I just had my husband bring down the bins. If we weren’t expecting company, I wouldn’t even bother to decorate, honestly. I’m tired of doing that,” said Pedroza, the Florida mom of two. Many will celebrate Christmas Day with sports About one-quarter of U.S. adults say they’re planning to watch sports on Christmas Day, while only 5% will head for a movie theater. Men are much likelier than women to say they’ll watch sports on Christmas, and older Americans are much more likely than younger Americans to tune in. About 2 in 10 adults under age 45 say they plan to watch sports on Christmas, compared with about 3 in 10 adults age 45 or older. Phillips does plan to break out his red sweater with the green Christmas tree that one of his grandmothers knitted for him a couple of years ago. “She made all kinds of things for me growing up,” he said. “This is by far my favorite.” Phillips has it in rotation for his part-time job as a grocery checkout clerk. He’s the outlier once again. Women are much likelier than men to say they’ll wear a holiday sweater or accessories. Gifts for pets and Elf on the Shelf About 3 in 10 U.S. adults say they will give a gift to their pet this year. In Iowa, Wyant’s nearly 3-year-old boxer-Great Dane mix named Indy is among them. “She’s a very spoiled dog,” Wyant said. “She’s got too many toys, so she’s getting treats this year. She loves her treats.” And the red felt elf that parents move around the house every night as a Santa spy to see which kids have been naughty or nice? Only about 1 in 10 U.S. adults say they’ll do Elf on the Shelf. “Noooo,” Pedroza said when asked if she’d ever done the elf for her kids. “My younger son was very well-behaved. Proxies for prompts: Emulate how your audience may be looking for you
In this new era of generative AI technology, searchers have begun to swap keywords with prompts. Shorter and long-tail queries are being replaced by more conversational prompts, which tend to be longer and more in-depth. These days, searchers are expecting more complete answers than a paginated list of results. Until we get an AI-specific equivalent of Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools, we can’t really see for certain what or how our audience is behaving on AI search platforms as they look for our content, brands or products. However, we can still look for proxies to emulate how this journey works. Here are multiple ways to use other data points as proxies to find prompts used by your audience. You can then use your AI Tracking Tool of choice to track how these prompts are performing. People Also Ask Hidden in plain sight, you can use a very popular SERP feature to move from keywords to prompts/questions. People Also Ask (PAA) was introduced in 2014 and suggests multiple related questions to your query. You can easily go from a keyword to a list of questions. When clicking on any PAA result, the list expands and gives you more terms. Go query by query to find relevant PAAs, or you can use AlsoAsked to extract the exact questions at scale. PAAs are long questions that attempt to answer the next questions asked in the search journey, so they’re a step closer to prompts written in AI Search platforms. Userbots Userbots like ChatGPT-User and Perplexity‑User are powerful ways to see how your pages are being used in AI Search. It doesn’t give you the prompts they use, but it’ll help you assess which pages are being cited without trying to guess by tracking prompts that may or may not be relevant at all. These bots ping the URLs on your website when they’re used to formulate an answer to a user. The process is called RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation). Your customers search everywhere. Make sure your brand shows up. The SEO toolkit you know, plus the AI visibility data you need. Start Free Trial Get started with To paraphrase Mike King, one of the most trusted sources in SEO & AI, RAG is a mechanism by which a language model can be “grounded” in facts or learn from existing content to produce a more relevant output with a lower likelihood of hallucination. Translation: Your page was used as an answer and, in some shape or form, your content helped a user. This may give you clues about what type of content is most used by your audience on these platforms, even if the answer hasn’t turned into a click. Historically, log files have been difficult for SEOs to get, despite every website having them in its servers (yet another reason why SEOs should have access to them!). You could use a combination of pages with userbot visits, search for their main keywords (as seen on Semrush or GSC), and then see which PAAs Google displayed. Long queries on GSC/BWT Despite not giving a breakdown of AI Mode or AI Overview queries on GSC, smart SEOs are finding proxies that can be used to find queries that resemble the behavior we expect in these platforms. One of them is Ziggy Shtrosberg, who came up with a huge regex you can copy and paste to your GSC. For instance, I found a pattern of prompts starting with “evaluate,” which have a high number of impressions by zero clicks (not a small number of clicks, exactly zero clicks). If longer prompts have a high number of impressions and no clicks, beware that it might not be humans using these prompts. Perplexity follow-up questions One of the main AI Search platforms, Perplexity has a feature called “Related” where it displays up to five follow-up prompts. While the initial prompt is still yours and may not be how others are prompting, the related follow-ups are still a good indicator of how humans prompt—or at least how the platform expects humans would. These answers are country-specific, so run your research locally. Semrush AI Visibility Tool Considering we don’t have the search volume metric per single keyword and that prompts are a lot more unique than keywords, it’s not realistic to track every single prompt relevant to our companies. A way to mitigate this is to combine these prompts into topics and use AI to summarize what they mean. The new Semrush AI Visibility Tool has a feature called “Prompt Research” that matches your keyword to a topic and gives you a list of prompts alongside brands mentioned, intent, and sources. Currently, the tool allows you to filter results between the US and the UK, including the full AI Response and a list of brands and URLs. Even though I typed a single keyword (“used cars”), it picked the closest available topic (“Used Car Sales and Dealerships”) and returned me all prompts, brand mentions, and source domains. You might decide not to track single prompts, which can grow fast and become overwhelming to measure. Rather, use the Semrush prompt database for optimization and measure the results by looking at the whole topic performance. Without grounding, your chances are low Keep in mind that not every prompt requires RAG, meaning that if the answer is already on the AI Search platform training data, no pages will appear as sources. For some brands, just getting a mention is fine. If, say, someone is looking for a museum or restaurant to visit, the mention might be enough to convince them to reach the destination and convert offline (e.g., buy a ticket or a meal). In most cases, however, SEOs are still looking for traffic, so the prompt must list pages in their answers to give you a chance to be visible. Ironically, while the results you get from ChatGPT are one answer instead of a SERP, the LLM is actually doing searches for you in the background. Luckily, you can find: The searches ChatGPT is doing in the background The probability of this search requiring a RAG You can find these by looking for “queries,” “search_queries,” and “search_prob” inside Chrome Dev Tools (Inspect > Network > Conversation > Response). Or, to simplify, you can add this script as a bookmark on Chrome and click on it after prompting a question on ChatGPT. This is an improved version of Ziggy Shtrosberg’s script. While these searches look more like traditional searchers as opposed to prompts, your strategy may be to optimize for them and win on AI search as a secondary benefit. That PayPal 'Automatic Payment Status' Email Is a Scam
Another PayPal phishing scam is circulating, this time with email notifications about recurring or automatic payments. The messages originate from a legitimate PayPal address, allowing them to evade some security filters and leave recipients worried that their accounts have been compromised—perhaps just enough to ignore the obvious red flags and call or email scammers back. I personally have been targeted by this scam with at least five separate emails, though all have gone straight to my spam folder. Here's how scammers are exploiting PayPal settings to land in your inbox. How the PayPal scam worksIf you're targeted by this campaign, you may receive an email with the subject line "Your automatic payment status has changed" or "Recurring Payment Reactivated." The layout imitates a real PayPal notification and includes a message about a high-dollar payment being "successfully processed" along with a customer service email and phone number to contact PayPal support. The email is full of red flags: It is addressed to a random name (or, in one of the messages I received, "Hello Update Invoice"), has poor spelling and wonky formatting, and simply doesn't make sense. You can easily spot oddities like bold text and Unicode characters, which BleepingComputer notes is a trick used to bypass spam filters and keyword detection. Credit: Emily Long Where the trick lies is in the sender field, as the email comes from service[at]paypal[dot]com, a legitimate PayPal address, and paypal.com is in the signed-by field. As Malwarebytes Labs describes, this is likely an abuse of PayPal's subscription billing feature. If a merchant pauses a customer subscription, the user will receive an automatic email from PayPal notifying them that their payment is no longer active. Scammers are likely setting up fake subscriber accounts using Google Workspace mailing lists, so automatic emails being generated are sent to everyone on those lists. If you look at the "To:" field, you'll see that the message isn't actually addressed to your email. Exploiting these types of loopholes to make phishing emails seem legit is a common tactic, and I've covered several similar PayPal phishing campaigns already this year. According to a statement provided to BleepingComputer, PayPal is working on mitigating this specific flaw. Ignore PayPal payment notificationsIf one of these PayPal messages lands in your inbox, don't engage with it. Scammers frequently use emails, texts, and calls about account security and financial transactions to scare you into action, and the impersonation of trusted institutions is often pretty convincing. If you are concerned about activity on your PayPal account, go directly to the app or website and log in to view alerts and check transactions. Do not use contact information or click any links in the original notification, as this increases the chances of compromising your information or downloading malware to your device. Google scraps unified pricing rules in Ad Manager after antitrust pressure
Google has removed its long-standing unified pricing rules in Google Ad Manager, once again allowing publishers to set different price floors for Google demand versus other programmatic buyers. What changed. Publishers can now set bidder-specific floor prices in Ad Manager. For example, one buyer can be required to bid at least $5 while others compete at a lower $2 floor. Google has also rebranded “unified pricing rules” as simply “pricing rules.” The backstory. Before 2019, publishers often set higher floors for Google to counterbalance its data advantage. That flexibility disappeared when Google mandated uniform pricing across exchanges — a move later scrutinized by regulators in both the U.S. and Europe. Why we care. Bidder-specific pricing rules change how auctions clear and how competitive different demand sources are inside Google Ad Manager. As publishers regain the ability to set higher floors for certain buyers, advertisers may see shifts in win rates, CPMs, and available inventory depending on their buying setup. Over time, this could reshape pricing dynamics and push advertisers to reassess bidding strategies and diversification across exchanges. Regulatory pressure: The rollback follows major antitrust actions against Google’s ad tech business. In the U.S., Google was found guilty of anti-competitive behavior, prompting proposed remedies that included ending unified pricing. In Europe, the European Commission fined Google €2.95 billion ($3.45 billion) and ordered the company to end self-preferencing practices across the ad tech supply chain. What Google says: Google said the change will make it easier for publishers and advertisers to use competing ad tech providers while minimizing disruption. The company framed the update as part of broader near-term product changes across display, video, and app ads. Industry reaction. Jason Kint, CEO of Digital Content Next, called the move a meaningful — if limited — win for publishers, noting that unified pricing often lowered yield and that this change offers immediate, tangible relief. He also suggested the update may be designed to show regulatory compliance and head off stronger remedies, including potential divestitures. The bottom line. China is exploiting US-funded research on nuclear technology
China is exploiting partnerships with U.S. researchers funded by the Department of Energy to provide the Chinese military with access to sensitive nuclear technology and other innovations with economic and national security applications, according to a congressional report published Wednesday. The authors of the report say the U.S. must do more to protect high-tech research and ensure that the results of taxpayer-funded work don’t end up benefiting Beijing. They recommended several changes to better protect scientific research in the U.S., including new policies for the Department of Energy to use when deciding whether to fund work that involves Chinese partnerships. The investigation is part of a congressional push to raise a firewall blocking U.S. research from boosting China’s military buildup when the two countries are locked in a tech and arms rivalry that will shape the future global order. Investigators from the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce identified more than 4,300 academic papers published between June 2023 and June of this year that involved collaborations between DOE-funded scientists and Chinese researchers. About half of the papers involved Chinese researchers affiliated with China’s military or industrial base. Particularly concerning, investigators found that federal funds went to research collaborations with Chinese state-owned laboratories and universities that work directly for China’s military, including some listed in a Pentagon database of Chinese military companies with operations in the U.S. The report also detailed collaborations between U.S. researchers and groups blamed for cyberattacks as well as human rights abuses in China. The Energy Department routinely funds advanced research into nuclear energy and the development and disposal of nuclear weaponry, along with a long list of other high-tech fields like quantum computing, materials science and physics. It doles out hundreds of millions of dollars each year for research. The department oversees 17 national laboratories that have led the development in many technologies. The report followed a number of congressional investigations into federally funded research involving Chinese scientists and researchers. Last year, a report released by Republicans found that partnerships between U.S. and Chinese universities over the past decade had allowed hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding to help Beijing develop critical technology that could help strengthen its military. Another investigation this year revealed that the Pentagon in a recent two-year period funded hundreds of projects in collaboration with Chinese entities linked to China’s defense industry. The Energy Department has failed for decades to take steps to ensure the research it funds doesn’t benefit China, the report’s authors found. They made several recommendations to tighten the rules, including a new standardized approach to assessing the national security risks of research, as well as requirements that the department share information about research ties with China with other U.S. government agencies to make it easier to spot problems. “These longstanding policy failures and inaction have left taxpayer-funded research vulnerable to exploitation by China’s defense research and industrial base and state-directed technology transfer activities,” the authors concluded. The Department of Energy did not immediately respond to questions about the report and its recommendations. A message seeking comment was left with the Chinese Embassy in Washington. Rep. John Moolenaar, a Michigan Republican who chairs the select committee, said in a statement that the “investigation reveals a deeply alarming problem: The Department of Energy failed to ensure the security of its research and it put American taxpayers on the hook for funding the military rise of our nation’s foremost adversary.” Moolenaar this year introduced legislation aimed at preventing research funding in science and technology and defense from going to collaborations or partnerships with “foreign adversary-controlled” entities that pose a national security risk. The legislation cleared the House but failed to advance to become part of the annual sweeping defense policy bill. It was met with strong opposition from scientists and researchers, who argued that the measures were too broad and could chill collaboration and undermine America’s competitive edge in science and technology. In an October letter, a group of more than 750 faculty members and senior staffers from American universities told congressional leaders overseeing the armed services that the U.S. is in a global competition for talent. how can we stop people from coming into work sick?
A reader writes: People in my office frequently come into work very obviously sick and many times get other people sick. Most people do not have the ability to work from home with the work we do. We’ve sent a firm-wide message telling people that we prefer that sick employees stay home, as to stop the spread to the rest of the staff. Unfortunately, this didn’t make much of a difference. I understand that people want to save their paid time off for more enjoyable times, but it’s not fair to the coworkers to whom they spread their germs. (We also offer six paid sick days, separate from vacation and personal leave.) What else can we do?
