my boss’s parenting choices are driving me nuts
A reader writes: I’m absolutely prepared for you to tell me there is nothing I can do about this at all besides ignore it, but I REALLY need to change my thinking around my boss’s parenting choices, which I find bizarre and am frankly tired of hearing about. My boss’s adult daughter and 13-year-old grandchild live with her. The daughter doesn’t work but often needs my boss to babysit. Fine, this is her business. But when she leaves work to do it, she gives us a convoluted and overly detailed explanation of why, every time. This has the effect of making it seem much more annoying than it would be otherwise, especially if we’re in the middle of a deliverable or project. For example, the daughter has to go to the store and the grandchild doesn’t want to go. My boss will have to go home and sit with the grandchild until the mom gets back. The child is never allowed to be alone, not even to walk to the mailbox. The daughter is excessively paranoid about human traffickers and kidnappings. (There is no known history of human trafficking in our area, certainly not of children from middle-class homes, and I haven’t heard of any spates of abductions either.) All this detail has made other coworkers roll their eyes behind my boss’s back and make cracks about how spoiled and entitled the daughter and grandchild are. One of my coworkers said recently, “If someone kidnapped that kid, they’d bring them back.” Which is obviously not okay! But JUST STOP TELLING US ALL THIS, OMG. The thing I can’t get over is that this child has a smartphone and unlimited, unfettered access to the entire internet, in spite of this paranoia about them being trafficked out of their suburban house while their mom runs to Target for 20 minutes. My boss has told and shown me things the kid has gotten up on social media or people’s profiles they’ve talked to, and I’ve been alarmed. No one is monitoring this child’s internet usage; sometimes they will show things to my boss voluntarily but that is it. Some of the profiles they’re interacting with are clearly adults not even pretending to be children. The child assures their family that this is just children using filters to appear older. No, it is not! I may be an elder millennial but I can tell the difference. I’ve tried gently pointing this out to no avail. I don’t have children myself, but none of my friends or family who do give their children a smartphone and then just hope for the best. Especially coupled with the absolute paranoia about the child never being alone or even allowed to attend a birthday party or sleepover without either my boss or the boss’s daughter, this is just insane to me. I fully know it’s not my business, but with so much of it coming into the workplace, what is my obligation to really be clear that this is potentially unsafe? And also, should I push back on the snark from coworkers? I’m a team leader and while I don’t technically outrank anyone else in my department of eight, I feel more of a burden to not participate in this kind of venting. Believe me, I understand it, but I know it’s not okay. Or should I just practice deep breathing and not let this drive me slowly insane? Well … I get why your coworkers are annoyed and making snarky remarks — AND YOUR BOSS IS NOT HELPING THAT SITUATION — but talking crap about a 13-year-old is not great. You’re right that at a minimum you shouldn’t join in when they’re doing that … and as a team leader, yeah, you do have some additional obligation to say, “Hey, I get why this annoying, but we don’t know the whole situation and we shouldn’t be snarking on a kid.” Speaking of not knowing the whole situation, would it help to allow that there could be details you don’t know that would make the protectiveness make more sense? There are kids who need safety plans where they’re not left alone (for example, because of self-harm behaviors). If that’s the case, the parent ideally would have a plan beyond “ask my own parent come home from work to stay here,” but the situation might be more complicated than you can see from where you’re standing. (It’s also possible that your boss doesn’t feel like divulging that so is citing “kidnapping” without realizing how exasperated it’s making people.) That said, any chance you’re in a position where you could point out to your boss that giving the team all these details is starting to frustrate and demoralize people? One possibility is to come at it as a team lead and frame it as, “Obviously your schedule is your own business, but my sense is people are getting frustrated that you leave during the day whenever Jane needs to go out, when they don’t feel they could do the same. I think it would go a long way toward mitigating that if you didn’t tell people that that’s what you’re leaving to do — I think it’s rubbing salt in the wound a bit every time they hear it. I’m not suggesting you change what you’re doing, just how much information you give people about it.” You may or may not have the kind of relationship where you can say that. If you don’t, you don’t — it’s not your responsibility to solve this for your boss. But if you do, it’s worth considering. As for pointing out that the real danger is the unsupervised internet access … you don’t have to, but ethically I do think you should raise it once. If your boss remains unconvinced, you don’t need to make it your mission to get through to her, but since she’s sharing this stuff with you, you’re well positioned to say, “I’m worried by some of things you’ve told me about Matilda’s internet usage. It sounds like she’s interacting with adults, which is a high risk factor for being exploited. Can I send you a couple of articles about why that can be dangerous and ways you can protect her?” (And then consider sending her this and this. Warning, the first one is disturbing.) You can also have a natural reaction in the moment when your boss shares information with you. For example, if she tells you something that makes it obvious Matilda is interacting with a strange adult, let yourself look shocked and say, “That’s really not safe for her. It’s how adults end up exploiting kids. Please don’t let her do that.” (I do worry about making a potentially already overprotective parent even more so, but talking to strange adults online is such a significant risk factor that it’s worth raising, the same way you’d speak up if someone’s kid was playing in traffic.) If your boss and her daughter persist in focusing all their worries on kidnapping and trafficking and ignore info that you’re putting right in front of them about a much more likely danger that’s right in their house … well, your ability to make them act is inherently limited. men coaching women to apologize less, HR sent me confidential salary info, and more
It’s five answers to five questions. Here we go… 1. Coaching a female employee to apologize less, as a man I’ve been thinking about your response to “my employee apologizes all the time,” specifically: “I think from the name on your email that you’re a woman, so one way to address it is to point out that women in particular tend to overapologize and that it can make them seem less confident and less authoritative than men” I’m a male manager in a field that’s pretty welcoming to women, thankfully, so throughout my career, my teams have always had significantly more women than men. I’ve wrestled with how to address the above (which I’ve seen firsthand), and also the other issues that women face in the workplace such as tending to negotiate less then men (also firsthand!), with those on my team. Basically, how can I be a supportive manager while avoiding the appearance of performative allyship/mansplaining/sexism. So back to your answer, so in this case in specifically mentioning about the writer likely being a woman, would the answer be different if the email was from a man, and if so, how would the script differ? (By the way, I have been wrestling with sending this since I couldn’t figure out how to ask the question without possibly seeming that I was trolling you, in light of the current climate we find ourselves in. But having been a not-very-good manager earlier in my career, and hoping to keep improving — which includes reading your writing every week — I thought I’d try.) You can just leave out “women tend to do this” and use the rest of the framing from that response, which was that apologizing a lot when it’s not warranted can make people seem less confident and less authoritative, and tell her you’d like her to work on not apologizing for questions or routine hiccups. It’s not that as a man you can’t point out that it’s a trap many women fall into, but that can land more patronizingly from a man than it would from a fellow woman. From another woman, the subtext is “I get this, I’ve been there, and I know the pressures that lead to it.” As a man, you lack that (although if you can honestly say that you’ve struggled with over-apologizing too, feel free to mention that as a way to build connection). But you can still say, “Here’s what I’m seeing, here’s how it risks holding you back, let’s work on changing it.” And that’s still a great and supportive thing for you to do as a manager; you’re just bringing different rapport-builders to the table. On salary negotiation, you could take a similar approach and could make a point of coaching any employee who seems like they’d benefit from it on how to assess their own value and negotiate accordingly. This can be a little tricky to do as a manager, depending on the politics of your organization, but it’s often very doable. It also wouldn’t necessarily need to be detailed coaching; sometimes it’s eye-opening just to hear someone with credibility say “I’d expect a role like X to pay $Y” or “most people in your shoes ask for $Y” or “you’re under-valuing yourself; why don’t we aim for $Y?” 2. HR sent me confidential salary info, then recalled it, then told the whole company not to discuss salary, then backtracked, then doubled-down A few days ago, our HR manager accidentally sent me confidential payroll information that I do not get paid enough to see, tried to do damage control by sending an (extremely illegal) email to the whole company reminding us of the (extremely illegal) policy in the employee handbook about discussing salary, and then sent a follow-up email that was meant to backtrack the illegal part but ended up doubling down on it. I had been planning to discuss the initial email with my manager, but HR was able to recall it so I no longer had hard proof, and the company-wide email seemed a good place to end the story. [Sidebar, I have immensely enjoyed my coworkers sarcastically asking each other if there’s a policy in the handbook about (insert innocent activity here).] Now I’m wondering, if it comes out that I didn’t tell my manager that I got the first email, am I going to get in trouble? FWIW, HR playing fast and loose with confidential info is a fairly regular occurrence. I don’t see why you’d get in trouble for not telling your manager that HR sent you an email they later recalled, unless your job is in some way to monitor/manage this kind of thing. That said, your HR really sucks. For anyone who’s unaware: in the U.S. it’s illegal for your company to try to prevent non-supervisory employees from discussing wages (and working conditions!) among themselves. It’s still really, really common for them to try to, though. More here: my company wants to stop me from discussing my salary with coworkers 3. Does my boss suddenly have a different understanding of my job than I do? I have a first-line management position at a large public educational institution and have been in this role since 2011. We’ve had some structural shakeups over the last few years, which has resulted in me being assigned to a new team and senior manager. Lately, there have been a few instances where I have been blatantly bypassed, ignored, or put on the spot with clients. My manager has also started stepping in on coordination of tasks that I would normally be responsible for, without discussing this with me beforehand. These actions have left me humiliated and waste my time when I have to clean up the inevitable messes that result. I know my senior manager knows a great deal about my role, so these instances are not due their ignorance about my position’s responsibilities. To make things worse, my other teammate now thinks it’s acceptable to bypass me too. I am quickly gathering the impression that the understanding I have of my role is no longer aligning with my supervisor’s. I’d like to begin tackling this by requesting a meeting with my supervisor where I would like them to outline, in detail, my position’s primary role, responsibilities, and duties. I’d also like these points formalized in my position description so that I may remind my supervisor when required. Are you able to give me some wording I can use when requesting a meeting? I think that’s the wrong approach. Just asking them to outline your job is too passive and risks your point being missed entirely. Instead, address it more head-on — meaning, have a conversation with your manager where you name what you’ve been seeing, explain why it concerns you, and ask for clarification about your role. If they say your understanding of your role is indeed still correct, then ask what’s causing them and others to bypass you, and ask for help ensuring that you’re looped in when you should be. 4. My manager picks on me every day My employer is finding something everyday to reprimand me about, but they are not doing the same for everyone else. I believe that my manager is picking on me by finding anything to write me up about. It’s like they’re trying to make me quit. I feel like it’s creating a hostile environment for me. Can they legally do this? They can legally do it as long as it’s not (a) based on your race, sex, religion, disability, age (if over 40), national origin, or other protected class, or (b) in retaliation for you exercising a legally protected right, like for making a good-faith report of harassment or discrimination. If your manager is just targeting you because she doesn’t like you, but it’s not for any of the reasons above, the law doesn’t prohibit that. (“Hostile environment” is a very non-intuitive legal term in that regard.) That said, do you have decent HR? They can’t necessarily protect you from a boss who’s determined to push you out, but they might be able to help if you can show you’re being treated differently than everyone else. Company rewrote job description to make in-office work a job requirement My partner works from home because they suffer from auditory issues that keep them from being able to focus in the office. Shortly after they got their accommodation, their employer changed the job requirements: Being able to work in a crowded office is now mandatory. (They didn’t change the work at all, just edited the job description.) Now my partner is in a situation where they might have to reapply for, and be turned down for, a job they’ve done for years. Can their employer even do that? It feels like blatant discrimination, especially given the timing. Do we have any recourse? What’s included in a job description is one factor that plays into whether something is considered an essential function of a position, as well as whether a requested accommodation can be considered “reasonable” or an “undue hardship” for the employer, but it’s not the sole determinant. Employers are also supposed to look at — and courts do look at — the actual work performed by the employee and the consequences of not enforcing the job requirement. Of course, employers try all the time to insist jobs must be in-office even when the Americans with Disabilities Act would actually require them to allow remote work in certain sets of circumstances. But it’s very, very fact-specific, so your partner’s best move is to talk with an employment lawyer for help. Provident Bank Survey: Business Owners Expect Growth but Brace for Tariff Impact
Despite rising concerns over tariffs, a majority of business owners expect the U.S. economy to grow in the second half of 2025, according to the latest Mid-Year Business Outlook Survey released Tuesday by Provident Bank. The survey, conducted by Pollfish for the New Jersey-based financial institution, polled 1,000 business owners and senior executives at U.S. companies generating over $1 million in annual revenue. More than 60% of respondents said they anticipate economic growth over the next six months. However, over 70% expressed at least moderate concern about the potential impact of tariffs on their operations. “Despite business owners voicing concerns about tariffs, our survey demonstrates a positive growth outlook in the near future,” said Bill Fink, Executive Vice President and Chief Lending Officer at Provident Bank. “We’re observing businesses strategically adapting to this environment by proactively managing inventory and planning capital expenditures.” While over 55% of businesses surveyed said tariffs are negatively affecting the broader U.S. economy, the majority reported only minimal direct impact so far. Over 80% indicated that the effect of tariffs on their business has been either “somewhat” or “none.” Businesses appear divided on policy preferences. Just under half (45%) said tariffs should be eliminated entirely, while 35% supported retaining them in some capacity, and about 20% said they should remain as currently proposed. More than 50% said they believe tariffs are weakening the country economically. When asked about specific operational changes in response to tariff pressure, 41.7% of business leaders reported plans to delay major capital expenditures. About 33% have adjusted their inventory levels, while 31.7% are still assessing possible changes. Hiring plans remain largely unaffected, with nearly half of respondents reporting no change and just under 30% indicating plans to freeze hiring. Fewer business owners are turning to sales promotions to boost demand. About one-third said they are taking no action, and another third are still evaluating their options. However, over 70% expressed at least moderate concern about the potential impact of tariffs on their operations. “Despite business owners voicing concerns about tariffs, our survey demonstrates a positive growth outlook in the near future,” said Bill Fink, Executive Vice President and Chief Lending Officer at Provident Bank. “We’re observing businesses strategically adapting to this environment by proactively managing inventory and planning capital expenditures.” While over 55% of businesses surveyed said tariffs are negatively affecting the broader U.S. economy, the majority reported only minimal direct impact so far. Over 80% indicated that the effect of tariffs on their business has been either “somewhat” or “none.” Businesses appear divided on policy preferences. Just under half (45%) said tariffs should be eliminated entirely, while 35% supported retaining them in some capacity, and about 20% said they should remain as currently proposed. More than 50% said they believe tariffs are weakening the country economically. When asked about specific operational changes in response to tariff pressure, 41.7% of business leaders reported plans to delay major capital expenditures. About 33% have adjusted their inventory levels, while 31.7% are still assessing possible changes. Hiring plans remain largely unaffected, with nearly half of respondents reporting no change and just under 30% indicating plans to freeze hiring. Fewer business owners are turning to sales promotions to boost demand. About one-third said they are taking no action, and another third are still evaluating their options. Xero Launches Tap to Pay on iPhone for U.S. Small Businesses Using Stripe
Xero, the global small business platform, has launched Tap to Pay on iPhone for small businesses in the United States, allowing users with a Stripe account to accept contactless, in-person payments through the Xero Accounting app — without the need for additional hardware or payment terminals. The new feature enables businesses to accept all forms of contactless payments, including credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets, using just an iPhone. Transactions are processed through the iPhone’s built-in Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, with support for PIN entry and accessibility features. The same research found that 89% of consumers use credit or debit cards. “With the launch of Tap to Pay on iPhone, we’re excited to support small businesses to streamline payment processes, enabling them to accept payments on the spot and maintain a healthy cash flow,” said Ramavarjula. Security is a central feature of Tap to Pay on iPhone. According to Apple, the technology does not store card numbers or transaction information on its servers, keeping both business and customer data private. Merchants simply prompt customers to hold their card or device near the merchant’s iPhone at checkout to initiate a payment. Xero emphasized the simplicity of setup. Eligible businesses can unlock Tap to Pay functionality through the Xero Accounting app and begin accepting contactless payments within minutes after downloading the app from the Apple App Store and linking their Stripe account. The rollout marks the latest expansion of Xero’s embedded payments capabilities and reflects growing demand for seamless digital payment solutions among U.S. small business owners.
