These Are the Best Deals on Tech Products During the Spring Sale Season
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. Cyber Monday is long gone, but with spring sales popping up this week in response to Amazon's Big Spring Sale event, there's still plenty of good tech to be found for cheap. Across Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Target, and more, gadgets from laptops to TVs are seeing deep discounts. Shopping these sales can be a bit difficult unless you know how to track an item’s price history, but fortunately, I’ve already done all of the work for you. Keep checking in here throughout the week for the best deals on laptops, TVs, tablets, video games, and more. Prices are accurate as of time of writing, but you can expect them to fluctuate and inventory to sell out, so you may not want to hesitate if you see a sale that grabs you. The best deals on laptops Apple MacBook Air 13-Inch with M4 Chip $949.00 at Amazon /images/amazon-prime.svg $999.00 Save $50.00 Get Deal Get Deal $949.00 at Amazon /images/amazon-prime.svg $999.00 Save $50.00 Sales events are a great time to buy laptops, as they're one of the most frequent items to go on sale during these periods. Here are some of my favorite picks for the best laptop deals available now. Apple MacBook Air 13-inch with M4 Chip: $949 at Amazon (was $999). Released earlier this month, Apple's M4 MacBook Air is already on sale. At time of writing, the discount only applies to the 13-inch model with 16GB of RAM, but that's still enough for plenty of users. Apple MacBook Pro with M4 Chip: $1,399 at Amazon (was $1,599). For a more powerful Apple computer, the MacBook Pro is the obvious choice. As time of writing, sales are present across all chip options (the M4 has multiple upgrades available), as well as across multiple RAM and storage loadouts, but you will need to stick to a 14-inch screen. Samsung Galaxy Book5 Pro 360: $1,475 at Amazon (was $1,699). A Windows-based alternative to the MacBook Air, although with power potentially rivaling the Pro at points, this lightweight laptop is a touch more expensive, but comes with a higher resolution OLED screen with a higher refresh rate, plus the ability to convert into a tablet. Microsoft Surface Laptop: $980 at Amazon (was $1,400). A cheaper alternative to the MacBook Air, the Microsoft Surface Laptop offers a familiar form factor and, thanks to its Qualcomm chip, higher battery life and greater AI compatibility, although at the cost of some performance. Lenovo IdeaPad 1i: $420 at Best Buy (was $600). This is a more basic, "get the job done" kind of laptop, but with a respectable mid-range chip, surprisingly generous storage for the price, and a touchscreen, there's quite a bit of value to be had here. HP Victus 16 Gaming Laptop: $900 at Best Buy (was $1,500). The HP Victus 16 is a tremendous deal below $1,000, getting you a respectable chip, 16GB of RAM, and enough storage to get by, but also the RTX 4070 GPU, which is typically reserved for much more expensive machines. The best deals on tablets Apple 11-Inch iPad Pro with M4 Chip $899.00 at Amazon /images/amazon-prime.svg $999.00 Save $100.00 Get Deal Get Deal $899.00 at Amazon /images/amazon-prime.svg $999.00 Save $100.00 Good tablets are a bit rarer to find deals on during sales events, since iPads so overwhelmingly dominate the space, and Apple can be a little more stringent with supply. Still, there are good opportunities to be found if you're willing to look. Apple 11-Inch iPad Pro with M4 Chip: $899 at Amazon (was $999). Apple's first iPad with an OLED screen, the M4 Pro is now available for less than four figures, with deals available for all storage configurations. Samsung Galaxy Tab S9+: $700 at Amazon (was $1,000). A premium Android tablet from Samsung, this rectangle boasts a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, 12GB of memory, 256GB of storage, a 12-inch 2,800 x 1,752 AMOLED screen, and comes with a stylus. Microsoft Surface Pro 13-Inch: $999 at Best Buy (was $1,200). This pick blurs the line between a tablet and a laptop, coming equipped with Windows 11, which gives it a full desktop ecosystem of apps to explore. Plus, this particular model also has a few Copilot+ goodies thrown in. Storage is 512GB and RAM is 16GB. The best deals on phones Google Pixel 9 (Unlocked) $629.99 at Amazon $799.00 Save $169.01 Get Deal Get Deal $629.99 at Amazon $799.00 Save $169.01 Similar to tablets, the current phone deals are a bit held back by Apple, as iPhone sales tend to be a bit hit-or-miss, often relying on third-party sellers with refurbished devices. However, if you're on Android, you have a wealth of options. Google Pixel 9 (Unlocked): $640 at Amazon (was $799). Google's latest non-pro phone has the Tensor G4 chip, a lot of exclusive Gemini-powered goodies, and a 6.3-inch OLED "Actua" display. Google Pixel 9 Pro (Unlocked): $849 at Amazon (was $1,099). An upgrade to the base Pixel 9, the Pro model has improved cameras, more storage options, and a higher resolution display. Google Pixel 9 Pro XL (Unlocked): $899 at Amazon (was $1,099). Priced similarly to the standard Pixel 9 Pro, the XL offers identical power, but a larger, 6.8-inch display. Samsung Galaxy S25 (Unlocked): $700 at Amazon (was $800). Samsung's Galaxy phones are a favorite alternative to Google's Pixels, with a more traditional camera setup and more powerful chips. You lose out on Google's exclusive Pixel software features, but if you can get used to Samsung's own ecosystem, there's also some convenience to be gained with its spin on Android. Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra (Unlocked): $1,195 at Amazon (was $1,420). An upgrade to the base Samsung Galaxy S25, the Ultra has more storage options, a larger, 6.9-inch screen, better cameras, and a slightly bigger battery. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 (Unlocked): $1,068 at Amazon (was $1,220). Flip phones are still an expensive proposition, but the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is a bit more affordable with the sale. This phone has many of the same specs as the S25, albeit with the camera's performance being traded out a bit in favor of the foldable screen. Motorola Razr+ (Unlocked): $700 at Amazon (was $1,000). This nostalgic flip phone is a slightly cheaper alternative to the Z Flip series, with a slightly weaker chipset but also a slightly larger size. The best deals on TVs Amazon Fire TV 55" $769.99 at Amazon /images/amazon-prime.svg $899.99 Save $130.00 Get Deal Get Deal $769.99 at Amazon /images/amazon-prime.svg $899.99 Save $130.00 Like laptops, TVs almost always go on sale at every opportunity, and waiting until these discounts drop is a great way to get a display that punches above its weight class. LG 77-inch B3 OLED TV: $1,497 at Amazon (was $2,297). OLED is still my favorite display tech out there, and if I can get on my soapbox for a moment, it's the only one that really compares to CRTs. LG makes some of the best OLED TVs around, and this big-screen model has a 4K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. There are four HDMI 2.1 inputs. Amazon 55-inch Fire TV Omni Series: $770 at Amazon (was $900). Amazon's Fire TVs are a great way to get a lot of screen on a budget. This 4K Mini-LED smart display has a 144Hz refresh rate, supports hands-free Alexa control, comes with up to an 85-inch screen, and has various HDR options. Roku 55-inch Plus Series QLED 4K Smart TV: $430 at Best Buy (was $500). Roku is one of Amazon's biggest rivals in the budget TV category. Available in up to 75 inches, this TV is 4K, supports Dolby Vision at a lower price point than Amazon's option, has a 60Hz refresh rate, and comes with Roku's snappy operating system built in. TCL 55-inch Class Q6-Series 4K Smart Google TV: $300 at Best Buy (was $320). If you're not big on Amazon's or Roku's operating systems, then a TCL TV is a good bet. This model comes in up to 98 inches, has a 4K QLED panel, supports Dolby Vision, and has a 60Hz native refresh rate. The best sales on video game tech Xbox Core Wireless Gaming Controller $45.00 at Walmart $59.99 Save $14.99 Get Deal Get Deal $45.00 at Walmart $59.99 Save $14.99 Video game sales tend to be more often relegated to summer and fall, but there are still a few sales to be found right now, especially on accessories. Xbox Series X 1TB Digital Edition: $435 at Amazon (was $450). Console deals are few and far between during this sales event, but you can snag the current most powerful Xbox for a slight discount right now, but you'll need to get the version without a disc drive. Amazon Fire TV 4K Max with Xbox Core Wireless Controller and 1 Month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: $105 at Amazon (was $145). This bundle will snag you Amazon's best streaming stick plus an Xbox controller and one month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, turning it into a full-on cloud gaming console. Xbox Core Wireless Gaming Controller: $45 at Amazon (was $60). Almost no video game accessory is as versatile as the basic Xbox controller, which can work across a slew of devices and has a standard layout that most games recognize immediately. 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller: $48 at Amazon (was $60). This is a reliable third-party alternative to the official Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, with both Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz connectivity, plus motion controls, back paddles, extra trigger buttons, macro compatibility, and durable TMR sticks. Note that you have to be an Amazon Prime member to get this deal. Shopping for tech? Lifehacker can help you make the right decision. And like any long-term relationship, you want to make sure it’s the right fit before you invest your time or money into it. Right now, with Amazon’s Big Spring Sale, you have an opportunity to start a relationship with a kitchen appliance you’ve been flirting with, and at prices that feel less risky. Here are some of my favorite discounts popping up this week. I don’t know your budget, but after testing the Vitamix Ascent X5 (read here for the deets), I can tell you that it is the most mighty blender I’ve used to date. Sad news: The X5 isn’t on sale. Great news: The Vitamix X3 is on sale. The X3 model has the three most common presets that you’ll use on any Vitamix anyway (smoothie, frozen dessert, soup) and you can always use the regular Start, Stop, and Pulse buttons to take care of dips and nut butters as you wish. The power and craftsmanship is still the caliber you'd expect from the Vitamix brand. With the relatively compact dimensions of 9.75"D x 7.75"W x 17"H, this model can easily be stored in a low cabinet or pantry closet. Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster OvenMy top pick for best overall air fryer is nearly 40% off right now. The Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster Oven is a large oven-style air fryer with a wide viewing window and analog turning dials for time, temperature, and fan speed settings. The thing that sets this air fryer apart from all the other mini convection ovens out there is the super quiet convection fan. Read here for my full review of this powerful and discreet appliance. Instant VortexLet it never be said that I left the basket-style air-fryer lovers behind. My favorite basket-style air fryer, the Instant Vortex is 40% off right now for Amazon’s Big Spring Sale. This appliance is a true workhorse. It’s continuously produced even browning and crisping, the basket style is extremely easy to clean, and it’s lightweight enough to lift, move, and store if you don’t have much counter space. Currently at $83.99, down from its usual $139.99, this air fryer is a bargain right now. KRUPS Waffle MakerEvery functional kitchen needs a waffle maker. This might surprise you, but it’s not just for making waffles. A waffle maker is a versatile appliance with a special indented pattern that, when pressed into ingredients, increases surface area and can make foods even more crispy and delicious with increased browning and caramelization. You can waffle burger patties, cheese, rice, shrimp, or even entire sandwiches. This waffle maker from KRUPS is 25% off right now and has removable plates, which I highly recommend to simplify your cleanup. Instant Pot DuoThe Instant Pot has lost some of its social vigor—fine—but that doesn’t mean it’s not an incredible kitchen appliance. In fact, losing its novelty makes it kind of the best time to buy. Observe: This Instant Pot 6.5 Quart Duo Crisp Ultimate Lid with Wifi is currently 30% off, and it's a full-on multicooker that is wifi enabled and has apparently over two thousand recipes accessible via the Instant app. This is the largest discount that this air fryer has experienced yet so it’s worth checking out if you’ve been in the market. It’s important to note that this is part of the Instant Duo line, which means it has air-frying capabilities as well. That’s a pretty big deal for something that made its name via steam pressure. Food processorA food processor can be a huge help in the kitchen, especially for big batches and prep work that requires a lot of chopping, slicing, or shredding. This highly rated food processor from Cuisinart is 20% off right now. This Cuisinart food processor has a 14-cup container, so it’s on the larger side of the spectrum, and has a simple two-button operating system. It comes with a standard S-blade, a slicing and shredding attachment, and a dough-kneading attachment. If you’ve been looking for a professional-quality food processor, this is the one to grab. This Garmin Fitness Watch Is Finally Affordable Enough for Casual Runners
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. The Garmin Forerunner 955 is currently on sale during Amazon's Big Spring Sale, dropping from its original price of $499.99 to $349. This is the lowest price the watch has ever been, according to price-tracking tools. Garmin's Forerunner line includes some of the best running watches on the market right now. The price drop could bring professional-grade fitness tracker within reach of both more recreational runners who have been looking for high-performance tracking. The Garmin Forerunner 955 came out in 2022 as one of Garmin's flagship fitness watches. The 1.3-inch transflective touchscreen display is easily visible outdoors in sunlight (the trade-off is it won't look as good indoors). Plus, the gorilla glass means the screen is scratch-resistant (but not scratch-proof). The touch controls also make it great for swimming or rainy activities. Garmin Forerunner 955 $346.99 at Amazon /images/amazon-prime.svg $499.99 Save $153.00 Get Deal Get Deal $346.99 at Amazon /images/amazon-prime.svg $499.99 Save $153.00 While Lifehacker's Senior Health Editor Beth Skwarecki is partial to the 265, she says the 955 still beloved by runners. She includes an important note on choosing your watch screens: All the 55 models all use MIP displays (memory-in-pixel). These displays reflect light, much like old-school LCD watches, so they are highly visible in sunlight but require a backlight to be seen in the dark. They can display color, but only a limited range of colors, and they are not as vibrant or as high-resolution as AMOLED screens. You can read more about which screen is right for you in Beth's guide here. You'll get about two weeks of battery life with the Forerunner 955. If you live in a sunny environment, you should consider the solar battery one, especially since it's nearly 40% off at $245.97 right now. Some other key Garmin watch features to consider: Advanced GPS tracking: Provides precise location and performance metrics Solar charging option: Extends battery life through innovative solar technology Comprehensive training insights: Offers detailed performance data and recovery recommendations Multi-sport functionality: Supports various activities beyond running Intelligent training guidance: Includes features like Training Status and Training Load Focus If you're not an Apple user, Garmin fitness watches are the no-brainer smartwatches to go for if you're looking for the most trusted brands. In fact, I think some Apple users might still want to consider switching to some Garmins, depending on their sport. Shopping for tech? Lifehacker can help you make the right decision. My Favorite Bone Conduction Headphones Are $30 Off Right Now
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. There may not be a lot of competition in the bone conduction headphone (BCH) space, but Shokz still stands out from the rest by a large margin. Its latest flagship headphones, the Shokz OpenRun Pro 2, came out last fall and are excellent for anyone looking to get that open-ear feel when working out outdoors, as I explained in my review. You can get them for $149.95 (originally $179.95) during Amazon's Big Spring Sale, the lowest price they've ever been on Amazon, according to price tracking tools. Shokz New OpenRun Pro 2 Brand: SHOKZ, Color: Black, Ear Placement: Open Ear $149.95 at Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 $179.95 Save $30.00 Get Deal Get Deal $149.95 at Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 $179.95 Save $30.00 If you've never used BCHs before, the main thing you need to understand is that they send vibrations through your bones instead of through the air, which makes them perfect for underwater listening (or just the shower). This usually comes with the trade-off of worse audio quality, usually in the lower registers. But that's where Shokz focused its attention on the OpenRun Pro 2. They have dual-driver bass technology that sends bass sound through the air, making these a hybrid BCH and open-ear with regular speakers. As the name implies, the OpenRun Pro 2 are made with runners in mind. They're lightweight, coming in at 1.02 ounces, have an IP55 water resistance rating, and have a battery life of up to 12 hours with quick charging (a five-minute charge gives 2.5 hours of juice). The companion app comes with EQ settings and the headphones have Bluetooth 5.3. What makes these BCHs stand out for me are the lack of rattling vibration that tickles the ears when certain pitches are played. Keep in mind that if you choose to not use the dual-driver bass technology through the app and stick to 100% BCH, the ticklish vibration is present. But that hybrid technology is what makes the OpenRun Pro 2 the best sounding BCHs in the market. And this is the best time to buy them. Shopping for tech? Quantity Takeoff in Construction: Process, Benefits and More
Construction projects manage many different types of resources. General contractors have to accurately estimate the amount of those items to keep their profit margin. They do this through the process of a quantity takeoff. What is quantity takeoff and when should this process happen in the construction project management cycle? We’ll address those questions, note who should be involved in the process, how to do it and why it’s so important. What Is Quantity Takeoff in Construction? Quantity takeoff (QTO) in construction refers to measuring and listing the quantities of materials, labor and resources required for a construction project. This detailed assessment estimates the cost, time and materials needed to complete the work. It involves identifying, counting and measuring all project items, such as concrete, steel, pipes, wiring and more. The primary goals of a quantity takeoff are to accurately estimate costs by determining how much of each item is required, planning procurement to ensure that enough materials are ordered in the right quantities at the right time, scheduling projects by understanding the scale of materials and labor required and helping contractors with the bidding process to prepare competitive bids for construction projects. Quantity takeoff documents can be in the form of spreadsheets or digital files and often involve using construction management software or tools to help automate the process, especially for larger projects. That’s why general contractors prefer ProjectManager, award-winning construction project and portfolio management software that has multiple planning tools. General contractors can use our robust Gantt charts for accurate cost estimation and project scheduling by listing all the project tasks, the human and nonhuman resources needed for that work and the associated costs. This helps in the bidding process and, if the bid is accepted, can be used as the project schedule. Our Gantt charts do more than schedule work and resources. They link all four types of task dependencies to avoid delays and cost overruns that can eat into one’s profit margin. Finding the critical path and identifying the essential tasks in the project is as simple as filtering the Gantt chart. Then set a baseline to track the planned effort against the actual effort in real time to stay on schedule. /wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Gantt-CTA-2025.jpgProjectManager’s Gantt charts help with quantity takeoff. Learn more When to Do a Quantity Takeoff A quantity takeoff is typically performed at various stages of a construction project. Here are the key times when it is necessary. During the pre-construction phase or bid stage to prepare for bigging and estimating After receiving design documents, which is the pre-construction planning, to estimate material quantities based on the design During the project execution and construction phase, to track the project’s progress and manage resources When changes occur through change orders or revisions to account for any design or scope changes At the completion or post-construction phase for final reporting, invoicing or cost reconciliation Who Should Be Involved in the Quantity Takeoff Process? There are multiple stakeholders involved in a quantity takeoff. They come from different disciplines to ensure accuracy and completeness. Here’s a list of those key players. Estimators are usually the primary individuals responsible for performing the quantity takeoff. They measure quantities from drawings and documents to estimate materials, labor and equipment needs. Project managers oversee the project and ensure the takeoff aligns with the project’s scope, budget and timeline. Architects and structural, mechanical, electrical and civil engineers provide the design documents and technical drawings used for the takeoff. Procurement professionals ensure the materials identified during the quantity takeoff are available and sourced on time. The construction manager ensures the quantities measured match the actual needs of the construction site. If specific tradies are involved, such as electrical plumbing and HVAC, subcontractors review the takeoff for their respective scope of work. In some projects, specialized professionals like quantity surveyors or cost engineers are involved in cross-checking the takeoff and the estimated costs. Benefits of the Quantity Takeoff Process The quantity takeoff process offers numerous advantages in construction projects, helping to deliver more accurate cost estimates, efficient resource management and smooth project execution. Providing precise data on materials, labor and time requirements allows for better planning, budgeting and decision-making throughout the project life cycle. Realistic Construction Cost Estimates A detailed quantity takeoff enables the creation of more accurate cost estimates. By identifying the exact amounts of materials, labor and equipment needed, contractors can avoid underestimating costs or running into unexpected expenses, which helps ensure the project stays within budget. Helps Prepare Competitive Construction Bids By accurately estimating what materials will be needed and their costs, construction firms, contractors and subcontractors can prepare competitive bids that are still profitable. If they fail to do a good quantity takeoff, they might find their costs are higher after being awarded the bid and their profit margin could shrink. Facilitates Resource Planning and Resource Scheduling A QTO provides clear visibility into the materials, labor and equipment needed for each stage of construction. This helps project managers plan resources efficiently, ensuring materials are ordered on time and labor is allocated appropriately. It also aids in scheduling, minimizing delays due to resource shortages or mismanagement. Quantity Takeoff vs. Material Takeoff While both quantity takeoff and material takeoff involve measuring quantities for a construction project, they differ in scope and purpose. As we’ve been discussing, a quantity takeoff is comprehensive, including all quantities required for the project, and is used for cost estimation, bidding, resource planning and scheduling projects. Material takeoff is a narrower process that focuses specifically on measuring and listing the quantities of materials required for construction. It’s primarily used for procurement, ensuring that the correct materials are ordered and available for the project. This includes only the materials like concrete, steel, drywall, pipes, etc., which are required for the project. It doesn’t account for labor or equipment. How to Do a Quantity Takeoff in Construction Now that we understand more clearly what a quantity takeoff is, who does it and why it’s done, let’s look at the steps that make up the process of creating one. They are as follows. 1. Review Construction Documents and Drawings Begin by thoroughly reviewing all construction documents, including blueprints, architectural plans, structural drawings and specifications. These documents provide the details necessary to identify the scope and type of materials needed for the project. 2. Review the Scope of Work Ensure you understand the project’s scope by reviewing the contract and scope of work. This will clarify what is included in the project and any exclusions. It helps ensure the takeoff covers everything required and prevents overlooking materials or work areas. 3. Calculate the Quantities of Materials Based on the documents and scope, calculate the quantities of each material needed for the project. This can include measuring lengths, areas and volumes or counting specific items like doors, windows or fixtures. It may involve manual calculations or using takeoff software. 4. Estimate the Costs of Materials Once the quantities are determined, the next step is to estimate the costs of each material based on market rates or supplier quotes. This helps generate a realistic cost estimate for the project, which can be included in bids and project budgets. 5. Compare the Quantity Takeoff Against the Bill of Quantities to Ensure Accuracy Cross-check the quantity takeoff with the bill of quantities (BoQ), which is a document that lists the estimated quantities and costs of materials. This step helps ensure that the takeoff is accurate and that no items are missing or miscalculated. 6. Write a Quantity Takeoff Report Finally, compile the results into a comprehensive quantity takeoff report. This should detail the quantities, materials and costs, making it easy for project managers, estimators and contractors to understand the scope of work and manage resources effectively. Free Construction Project Management Templates Use these free construction project management templates to help with the quantity takeoff process. However, we also have over 100 free project management templates for Excel and Word that cover all aspects of managing projects, across multiple industries. Construction Quote Template Use this free construction quote template for Excel to break down costs for projects and come up with accurate estimates on costs, but also terms and conditions that apply to the work or materials being quoted. Construction Estimate Template This free construction estimate template for Excel helps to estimate all labor, material and direct and indirect costs for construction projects. It’s a versatile template that can be used in the bidding process, client budgeting, budget tracking, value engineering, change order management and feasibility studies. Construction Budget Template The budget is another way to do a quantity takeoff as it estimates all related costs. This free construction budget template for Excel follows a work breakdown structure to list all project tasks and the labor, materials and other costs. How ProjectManager Helps Manage Construction Projects Templates are helpful, but only to a point. That’s because using a static document to try and manage dynamic construction projects will get frustrating fast. Unlike construction project management software, templates have to be manually updated and are poor collaborative platforms. General managers want to have real-time access to crews on the job site. That’s why they choose ProjectManager, award-winning project and portfolio management software for construction with multiple project views, such as Gantt charts, kanban boards, task and calendar views, that update simultaneously as teams update their status online or mobile apps for Android and iOS. Robust Resource Management Features When the quantity takeoff is done and the teams are being onboarded, general managers and their subcontractors can set the availability of their teams, including PTO, vacation and global holidays, as well as skill sets. This makes it easier to assign them tasks. Then, visit the color-coded workload page for an overview of resource allocation. See who is overallocated or underutilized and balance the team’s workload to keep them working at capacity without risking burnout. There’s even a team page that provides a daily or weekly summary of the team’s activities, which can be filtered by progress, priority and more. /wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Team-Light-2554x1372-1.png See Real-Time Data With a Construction Project Management Dashboard Quantity takeoffs have to be updated as change orders come in. To stay on top of what’s happening on a high level of the project, toggle to the real-time project or portfolio dashboards. They collect live data and display it in easy-to-read graphs and charts that show metrics, such as time, costs, workload and more. Customizable reports dig deeper into the data and can be filtered to focus on what one wants or provide an overview of progress to share with stakeholders. Secure timesheets not only streamline payroll, but track labor costs to help keep the project on budget and keep your profit margin. /wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Dashboard-light-mode.jpg Related Construction Project Management Content There’s much more to construction project management than quantity takeoff. This App Gets Rid of Autoplaying Videos, Trackers, and Other Modern Browsing Annoyances
The modern internet is full of annoyances designed to make your experience worse. Sites disable copying, right-clicks, and shove all kinds of massive banners and autoplaying videos in your face, even when they hide the content you're there for. If this kind of thing bothers you, and you happen to browse on your iPhone or Mac, there is a solution: the StopTheMadness Pro app ($15). It works with Safari on your iPhone or Mac, and with Firefox and Chrome for Mac. StopTheMadness Pro is a one-stop solution to reclaiming the internet. It has so many features that it's hard to list them all in one article, but I'll highlight the ones I like the most (for context, I primarily use it with Safari on Mac). If my brief rundown isn't enough for you, once you install the extension, you can also of course click its icon in the toolbar to see everything it can do. This can be a bit overwhelming, since the General tab itself lists over 50 features, but the extension enables a good set of defaults to get you started. If you don't have the time to immediately check out every feature, the defaults and my recommendations will still take care of a large number of annoyances for you. That said, once you are ready to experiment more, you can go to StopTheMadness Pro's website to learn more about each feature. Note that, when on Chrome and Firefox, the app uses a non-standard installation method, but you can easily follow the prompts in the app to install and update the extension whenever needed. Regain control over videos on the internet Credit: Pranay Parab My favorite feature in StopTheMadness Pro is its ability to stop autoplaying videos on all websites. Even though I've disabled autoplay in all my browsers' settings, I've noticed that many websites don't respect this preference. They use custom video players that make it hard to stop playback, and sometimes those videos start playing at full voume. StopTheMadness Pro's General tab has a feature called "Stop autoplaying audio and video," which has worked on all the websites I've visited since enabling it. For instance, I visit a website for sports scores that has a habit of embedding a live stream of its postgame analysis into other posts. This starts playing unmuted even if I'm not actively on the live blog tab. StopTheMadness Pro was able to block this, which is a big relief. The extension can also make YouTube very usable for you. It can skip ads, show the picture-in-picture button even if you don't have YouTube Premium, set the default video quality, and automatically enable subtitles for you. Coupled with that, it can force all websites to use the native audio and video controls on your iPhone and Mac. This means that if you dislike YouTube's custom video player (or that of any other site), you can use Apple's native controls instead. Block tracking and annoyances Credit: Pranay Parab On the Mac, you can use StopTheMadness Pro's keyboard shortcuts to perform useful functions such as copying a link without clicking or right-clicking it. Hover the cursor over a link and press Command-C to copy it. Check out the extension's Keyboard section to see other useful shortcuts, but that's not all. The Tab Rules section lets you decide what happens once you click a link. You can force the browser to open it in the same tab, a background tab, in a new active tab, or even open some links in the browser of your choice. When I first bought this extension a few years ago, it was to circumvent copy-paste blocks on websites and to bypass Google's AMP pages on my iPhone. It still does those things quite well, and you can use it to reclaim the ability to right-click, copy, and paste on websites that block it. Since then, it's evolved to block many other annoyances, such as the hideous "Sign in with Google" pop-up that appears on Reddit and many other sites. It also removes tracking parameters from most links you click, and in case it can't remove them, you can go to the extension's Trackers tab and add the necessary parameters manually. StopTheMadness Pro can also automatically expand shortened URLs for you, thereby stopping link tracking via URL shorteners. Although this extension is not an adblocker, it also allows you to hide annoyances on any webpage with its element hiding feature. Click the Hide Page Element button after opening the extension via the toolbar, and select the annoyance you wish to block. Advanced features worth checking out Credit: Pranay Parab Before getting to the advanced features, it's worth mentioning that StopTheMadness Pro supports site-specific settings, too. In its General tab on Mac, you'll see a + button next to My default options for all websites. You can click that button to add site-specific settings for the website you're on. When you're using the extension on your iPhone, this option appears in the Website section of the extension's menu. This lets you create custom preferences for websites that you frequent. If you're a fan of tinkering with every aspect of your web browsing experience, you can use this extension to add custom CSS or JavaScript code, replace default fonts with your own choices, or to add JavaScript snippets (as an alternative to bookmarklets). The Custom Code section lets you customize websites using CSS or JavaScript code, which will run automatically every time a page is loaded. However, the JavaScript Snippets feature in the Scripts tab is for code you'd rather run manually. I also like the Web Rules section of the extension, which allows me to open links from certain websites in a browser of my choice. I find that Chrome or its derivatives handle Google Docs or Sheets a lot better than Safari, and I used this to redirect all those links to a different browser. It's not often that one comes across a powerful browser extension that works so well. StopTheMadness Pro is exceptional and I consider it a must-have for anyone who browses the web on Apple devices. It definitely has a learning curve, but the developer's impressive documentation makes it really easy to learn more about every available feature. View the full article

My Favorite AirPods Are Cheaper During Amazon's Big Spring Sale
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. As someone who has fully bought into the Apple ecosystem, my earbuds of choice are, obviously, AirPods. But it's not just because I'm a fanboy (although I definitely am one): AirPods, particularly the AirPods Pro 2, are fantastic earbuds for so many reasons. And while they're usually a bit pricey, Amazon currently has them on sale for a very reasonable $170, down from $249.99, during its Big Spring Sal AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) $169.99 at Amazon /images/amazon-prime.svg $249.00 Save $79.01 Get Deal Get Deal $169.99 at Amazon /images/amazon-prime.svg $249.00 Save $79.01 Apple might slap their "Pro" moniker on most product categories these days, but AirPods Pro at least come with a lot of features to live up to the name. They may not be for "professionals," but you do get features you don't get on other AirPods models. For one, the AirPods Pro come with excellent noise cancellation. Although, honestly, the in-ear seal from the silicone tips blocks out enough background noise that I hardly ever turn on Noise Control. In fact, because the seal is so good, you also get Transparency Mode, an option that pumps in the sounds around you, so you can be aware of your surroundings—or even have a conversation with your earbuds in. Speaking of conversations, one excellent feature exclusive to the second-gen Pros is Conversation Awareness: When you start talking while listening to something, your AirPods will turn down the volume and boost the voices of the people you're talking to. When everyone stops speaking, your AirPods will return to normal. It's great. Another automatic feature is "Adaptive Audio" (previously Adaptive Transparency) which can reduce any sound above 85 dB, while maintaining other sounds at the typical volume. That way, you can follow a conversation or even watch a TV show with your AirPods in, but if an ambulance races by you, its sirens will seem to be a very tolerable 85 dB. You'd think you'd get these two features on the AirPods Max, Apple's flagship over-the-ear headphones, but you don't: You need the second-gen Pros for that. Like all AirPods, the Pros easily jump among all your connected Apple devices. You could be watching a video on your Mac, then take a call on your iPhone and start chatting through your AirPods. If you have an Apple TV, you can switch to your AirPods, too, which I frequently do, since I prefer the experience to my soundbar. While all these features are awesome, what it really comes down to for me is sound quality: The Pros just sound great, especially for such low-profile earbuds. And, because they block out so much sound on their own, I feel like I can appreciate the quality of the music I'm listening to in a variety of situations. I used to pause my music with my old AirPods whenever a loud truck or bus would drive past me on a walk. That's not a problem with the Pros. Plus, now that it's been FDA approved, you can even be able to use these AirPods as hearing aids. Not a bad perk for $169. Other great Prime Day deals on AirPodsThat's not to say other AirPods are a bad choice: If you don't like the tight seal of the Pros, you may prefer the more traditional fit of the AirPods 4. They're on sale for $150 for the Spring Sale, or $100 if you opt for the version without noise cancellation. There's also a deal on the USB-C AirPods Max, which are down from $549 to $480. I love my AirPods Max, but they're tough to recommend at their ridiculously expensive MSRP. Now, they're a bit of an easier pill to swallow, especially because they just got lossless audio over wired connections. Shopping for tech? Lifehacker can help you make the right decision. OpenAI brings AI image generation directly to ChatGPT
OpenAI is introducing image generation directly within ChatGPT. Powered by its flagship multimodal model, GPT-4o, the chatbot can now create visuals straight from the chat interface. The feature will initially be available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, and free users. Enterprise and Education tier users will get access soon. “Today we have one of the most fun, cool things we have ever launched . . . native images in ChatGPT,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said at the beginning of a video stream Tuesday. Altman acknowledged that the feature had been highly anticipated—especially since competitors like Google Gemini have offered integrated image generation since mid-2024. ChatGPT now allows users to generate images based on prompts, conversations, and uploaded files. Users can create brand new images or transform existing images. OpenAI says the “world knowledge” trained into the GPT-4o model allows ChatGPT to better understand the contexts in which images are used. It is also better at following prompts rendering text within images, OpenAI says. Users can refine images by prompting the model with natural language. For instance, when designing a video game character, the model can maintain visual consistency across multiple iterations as the user makes adjustments. OpenAI says it expects people to use the tool work-related visuals that require precision (such as diagrams, infographics, branded content), text-heavy images (instruction posters, business cards), photorealistic images with accurate lighting and textures, and visuals that benefit from conversation context. By simplifying the process with a single multimodal model that handles all image generation tasks, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as a go-to tool for both personal and professional image generation. My Favorite Smart Lock Is $84 During Amazon's Big Spring Sale
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. As an Airbnb host, a good smart lock is an extremely important purchase. I've gone through my fair share of smart locks, but none have been more reliable, affordable, and easy to install than the SwitchBot WiFi Smart Lock Pro, which I raved about in a recent review. Right now, you can get the bundle that has everything you need (it comes with the smart lock, keypad, and hub to control it remotely) for just $84 (originally $199.99) during Amazon's Big Spring Sale—that's the cheapest it has ever been, according to price tracking tools. SwitchBot WiFi Smart Lock Pro Special Feature: Passcode Unlock, Alarm, IP65 Weather Resistant, Auto-Lock, One-Touch Lock $84.00 at Amazon $199.99 Save $115.99 Get Deal Get Deal $84.00 at Amazon $199.99 Save $115.99 The main reason I love this smart lock is its reliability. A smart lock's most important job is to open and close reliably, whether that's physically with a key, with your finger, code, or remotely through the app. That seems like a pretty basic requirement, but you'd be surprised how few smart locks nail it—the SwitchBot has been the only smart lock to not fail me in the year I've been using it so far. The installation was also the easiest of any smart lock I've installed. You only need to remove the lock faceplate from inside and use an L-shaped hex wrench that comes in the box to mount the smart lock. It took me seven minutes to finish. There's also an option to glue the hardware for a complete tool-free option. The smart lock also retrofits most locks, and since the installation is so easy, that makes it perfect for renters, too. Some nice features are the auto-lock (I love not having to close the door behind me), a status detector that notifies or alerts you of activity, and being able to send permanent or temporary codes to family or guests. It also works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and IFTTT. The battery lasts up to nine months, according to SwitchBot, but it'll depend on use (it was accurate for mine). Shopping for tech? Peloton's Original Bike Is $250 Off During Amazon's Big Spring Sale
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. The original Peloton bike is currently on sale during Amazon's Big Spring Sale, dropping from its original price of $1,445 to an appealing $1,195, saving you $250. This is one of the most competitive prices I've seen for the original Peloton bike. Of course, you'll need to consider the true cost of a Peloton after bundling all the necessary accessories. For instance, Peloton sells its bike shoes separately—normally for $125, but you can get them for $100 during this spring sale. Another cost includes a monthly subscription to the app, which grants access to thousands of classes beyond just cycling, including strength training, yoga, and meditation. Although, as Lifehacker's senior health editor Beth Skwarecki details, Peloton kind of sucks as a running app. The Original Peloton Bike $1,195.00 at Amazon /images/amazon-prime.svg $1,445.00 Save $250.00 Get Deal Get Deal $1,195.00 at Amazon /images/amazon-prime.svg $1,445.00 Save $250.00 If you're considering buying a used Peloton instead, here is what you can expect; keep in mind there's a $95 fee (plus some other costs you might want to consider) that you'll need to pay Peloton in order for the machine to trade hands. It comes with "Intelligent Dirt Detection" that enables it to detect and revisit heavily soiled areas, a dock that self-cleans and won't need to be emptied for seven weeks, a FlexiArm Side Brush that gets into edges and corners, 10,000Pa suction, and, interestingly, "real-time video calls and two-way voice interaction with your pets." The Qrevo Master automatically recognizes pets and you can even use its cameras to check on your animals (or whatever you want, really) while you're away. The S8+ is a cheaper option with solid specsIf you don't need 10,000Pa suction. Good for you! You get to save even more money. The S8+ has 6,000Pa suction and its self-cleaning dock needs to be refreshed every 60 days or so, but it's $499.99 instead of $999.99 right now. Per the company, it is, "smart enough to stay out of troubles," as it uses 3D mapping technology to map out your home as it cleans. The Q8 Max is a cheaper options that packs a big punch Try the Q8 Max or S8 if you only want to spend $259.99 (instead of the usual $599.99) or $349.99 (down from $749.99). Both map your house like the more expensive options and feature a DuoRoller brush that's perfect for picking up hair, but they lack a a self-cleaning dock, so you will have to empty it out after it vacuums or mops. The Q8 Max+ and Q5 Pro+ self-clean for lessIf you liked the price points on the Q8Max or S8 but really want that self-cleaning dock, consider the Q8 Max+, which is $399.99 right now (down from $819.99), or the Q5 Pro+, down to $299.99 (from $$699.99). For a few extra dollars, you get the DuoRoller brush, home-mapping, and object avoidance, plus that self-cleaning dock you don't need to touch for seven weeks. The power is lower—5,500Pa suction on both—but that's the biggest tradeoff compared to the more expensive models. The Q7 Max+ is right in the middleFinally, the Q7 Max+ is in the sweet spot in terms of price and function: Normally $869.99, it's $549.99 right now. Though you only get 4,200Pa suction, you don't have to empty the self-cleaning dock for seven weeks, it comes with a 30-level adjustable water flow for mopping, it uses Lidar navigation, and you can set no-mop and no-go zones to make sure it's staying out of those "trouble" spots. were we wrong not to interview a volunteer for a paid job?
This post was written by Alison Green and published on Ask a Manager. A reader writes: I would really love your opinion on how we handled this hiring process — and on the subsequent fallout. I work for a public library that has a very large volunteer base and a small paid staff. When we have a job opening, which is rare, volunteers are welcome to apply. We traditionally grant them a phone interview (i.e., they make the first cut) as a courtesy, though that is not official policy. A few volunteers have been hired over the years, most recently about three years ago. One volunteer, Stephanie, has applied twice (two years apart) and made it to an in-person interview (second round) both times. Enough time had passed after the first rejection that we gave her the second opportunity, and to her credit, she does have an impressive resume of high-level administrative work and did well in the short phone screenings. However, in both in-person interviews, we found that she was rambling and unfocused despite our best efforts, and she expressed hesitations about performing some key parts of the job (working under pressure, multi-tasking). She also made some offhand comments that came off as elitist and lacking compassion, and we really don’t feel she’s a fit for our community-focused, fast-paced environment, nor would any of us particularly look forward to working with her. The reason we gave for rejecting her both times was the standard “there were candidates whose skills and experience were a better fit,” though we took extra care with the wording due to our ongoing relationship. Stephanie just applied for a third time (nine months after the last rejection). A volunteer has never applied more than once, so we have no precedent for this. We (hiring committee of three) already knew she was a “no” and did not invite her to a phone interview this time. We felt that continuing to interview her would send the wrong message. As the hiring manager, I sent her a kind, personalized rejection that she had not made it to the interview round this time, citing the large and competitive applicant pool (true), and reiterated that we value her and her volunteer work. Although she had told the volunteer supervisor there would be no hard feelings if she didn’t get the job, Stephanie did NOT take it well. Long story short, over the course of four weeks, she has approached our director in public expressing her shock and disappointment at not being interviewed, sent an angry and accusatory email directed at me for being “unfair,” made passive-aggressive comments about our new hire, and accosted the director at work with an angry diatribe about how she “can do the job” and had been owed a courtesy interview. Along the way, she made a racist comment about a previous hire (“I know you hired her because she’s Black, but I think that’s great”), claimed to be more qualified than any of our recent hires, and “threatened” to stop going above and beyond in her volunteer work (okay?). I’ve never seen anyone lose their cool like this over a hiring decision. At least she has validated for us that we made the right call, I suppose. We truly want to learn from this and regret that there are hard feelings that might have been avoided. Were we wrong in not granting Stephanie a courtesy interview a third time, as she believes? Should we have been more direct about the reasons when we rejected her the last time (or this time)? And if she were to apply again down the road, as she said she still plans to do, what do we do? It doesn’t sound like you did anything wrong. You’ve interviewed her twice and knew she wasn’t going to be a competitive candidate, so chose not to lead her on or misuse her time. She’s not owed repeated shots at a job just because she volunteers, and a lot of people in her shoes would prefer not to have their time wasted or their hopes raised if you already knew you wouldn’t hire them. If you could go back and redo anything, I’d say it would have been better to have a conversation with her where you provided some feedback on why you weren’t going to interview her, in recognition of the fact that she volunteers with you and has shown a long-running interest in being hired. But the fact that you didn’t do that in no way warrants her response! (And it sounds like you did send a personalized note, not just a form rejection.) Can you have a conversation with her about it now? Given the way she’s been acting since, it sounds like you’ve got to do that to address both her frustration and the fact that she can’t go on being so disruptive about it. Ideally in doing that, you’d give her some feedback about why you don’t think she’s the right fit for the job. “Rambling and unfocused” can be tough to give feedback to a candidate on (although not impossible), but “hesitations about performing key parts of the job” is much easier — as is the part about making comments that aren’t aligned with your community-focused culture. You’re not looking to debate any of this with her, of course, but because she’s a long-time volunteer, it would be respectful to share those concerns with her so that she has a better understanding of why she was passed over. Depending on how that conversation goes, you might also need to tell her point-blank that she can’t keep accosting people about the decision and to ask whether she wants to continue volunteering, knowing that that behavior can’t continue. Amazon's Kindle Colorsoft Just Became a Much Better Deal
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. The price of Amazon's Kindle Colorsoft was one of the biggest barriers to recommending when I reviewed the device earlier this year and compared it to cheaper options like the Kobo Libra Colour, but thanks to Amazon's Big Spring Sale, it's now a significantly more attractive option. Normally selling for $280, it's now down to $225, actually making it cheaper than the Kobo and similar color e-readers from Boox or Bigme. Amazon Kindle Colorsoft $224.99 at Amazon /images/amazon-prime.svg $279.99 Save $55.00 Get Deal Get Deal $224.99 at Amazon /images/amazon-prime.svg $279.99 Save $55.00 That's a pretty significant savings, especially because the Kindle Colorsoft has some key improvements over other color e-readers when it comes to the screen. It uses the same E Ink Kaleido 3 display as most other color e-readers, sure, but it also boasts some technical additions that give it higher contrast and better lighting. It's not going to be as vivid as a more traditional tablet, sure, but it's the best I've ever seen with color e-ink. There's also no denying the convenience of Amazon's Kindle store. If you have a pre-existing library of content, getting a new Kindle device is the easiest way to upgrade without losing access to it. That said, you'll still be making some sacrifices here. Comics are easily the best use case for color e-readers I've found yet, and without access to apps from the likes of Marvel or DC, actually finding content to read on your new Colorsoft can be a bit harder than elsewhere. Amazon also recently made it much harder to read Kindle content on non-Kindle devices, so you should know that you're potentially locking yourself into a future of Amazon e-readers if you start buying books using its store. Still, if you're willing to deal with all that, the Kindle Colorsoft is one of the more technically proficient color e-readers available right now, and at this price, doesn't cost you any extra to buy over many competitors. You Can Get This iPad 9th Gen and Beats Flex Headphones on Sale for Just $225
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. This refurbished iPad 9th Gen (2021) in Space Gray, bundled with Beats Flex Wireless Headphones, is currently on sale for $224.99 (with free shipping!) on StackSocial, and for that price, it’s a great value. The iPad itself is listed with a Grade “A” rating, meaning it’s in near-mint condition with little to no visible wear—basically as good as new without the retail price tag. That said, its minimum battery health is 80%; and it's also wifi only, so no LTE connectivity, but that’s expected. Performance-wise, the A13 Bionic chip keeps things running smoothly for everyday tasks like browsing, streaming, and taking notes. The 10.2-inch Retina display may not be Apple’s most advanced, but it’s crisp, bright, and great for binge-watching or sketching. It comes with 64GB of storage, which should be fine for everyday use, but it’s non-expandable, so heavier apps or a lot of downloads might fill it up quickly. The front camera is 12MP with Center Stage, which keeps you in the frame during video calls, while the back camera is 8MP, good enough for scanning documents or casual photos. Plus, it supports the Apple Pencil (1st Gen)—but keep in mind that that’s not included, so if you plan on doodling or taking handwritten notes, you’ll need to budget for that separately. Battery life holds up well, with about nine hours per charge. The Beats Flex Wireless Headphones in the bundle add a little extra value, though they’re more of a nice throw-in than a major selling point. They connect via Bluetooth, have up to 12 hours of battery life, and feature Apple’s W1 chip for seamless pairing with iOS devices. Sound-wise, they’re decent for casual listening, but they won’t blow you away with deep bass or high-end clarity. Still, they’re comfortable and lightweight, and if you’re already deep into the Apple ecosystem, these could make a solid backup pair of wireless buds. One potential downside is that these are neckband-style earbuds, which some might find outdated compared to true wireless options. On the other hand, if you’re prone to losing small earbuds, this design can be a plus. Along with the iPad and Beats Flex, you also get a case, a screen protector, a stylus, and charging accessories—which means you won’t have to shell out extra for the basics (rare for a refurbished buy). At this price, it’s a practical pick if you need an iPad for everyday tasks and are okay with a refurbished model. It won’t replace a high-end laptop or an iPad Pro, but it gets the job done for streaming, light work, and general use. View the full article

Ex-Google exec: Giving traffic to publishers ‘a necessary evil’
A new profile of Elizabeth Reid, the head of Google Search, confirms that Google is moving away from its longstanding model of sending its users to websites. As one former unnamed senior executive put it: “Giving traffic to publisher sites is kind of a necessary evil.” As for the iconic Google Search bar? It will slowly lose prominence in the Google Search experience, due to the continuing growth of voice and visual search, Reid said. Necessary evil. Google has been increasingly focused on keeping users inside Google properties, reducing the need to click through to external sites. A former Google senior executive told Bloomberg that supporting publishers was incidental to Google’s larger aims: “Giving traffic to publisher sites is kind of a necessary evil. The main thing they’re trying to do is get people to consume Google services.” “So there’s a natural tendency to want to have people stay on Google pages, but it does diminish the sort of deal between the publishers and Google itself.” Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in December Google spends a lot of time “thinking about the traffic we send to the ecosystem.” But, of late, he has stopped short of promising that Google will send more of it to websites – and there’s probably good reason for that. Look no further than Barry Schwartz’s article, Google: Not all sites will fully recover with future core algorithm updates, in which Google’s Search Liaison Danny Sullivan said that websites shouldn’t expect to recover from core updates. Sullivan also said this in September. And Google reiterated it again in October. Instead, Pichai now mentions how AI Overviews are increasing search usage. (Even though, I thought the whole point of AI Overviews was to reduce the number of searches – remember the idea of “let Google do the searching for you” to get “quick answers”?) As a reminder, Google sees more than 5 trillion searches per year. But for every 1,000 Google searches, only 360 clicks in the U.S. go to the open web (Context: Nearly 60% of Google searches end without a click). Google Search hovering. The Google Search bar won’t go away, according to Reid. However, it will become less prominent over time as Google prepares for the rise of voice and visual searches. Here’s the full section from the Bloomberg article (Google Is Searching for an Answer to ChatGPT): “Reid predicts that the traditional Google search bar will become less prominent over time. Voice queries will continue to rise, she says, and Google is planning for expanded use of visual search, too. Rajan Patel, a vice president for search experience, demonstrated how parents can use Google’s visual search tools to help their kids with homework, or to surreptitiously take a photo of a stylish stranger’s sneakers in a coffee shop to buy the same pair (something Patel did recently). The search bar isn’t going away anytime soon, Reid says, but the company is moving toward a future in which Google is always hovering in the background. ‘The world will just expand,’ she says. ‘It’s as if you can ask Google as easily as you could ask a friend, only the friend is all-knowing, right?'” Other Reid quotes of note. For what is being considered a “profile” of Reid, the article didn’t contain many direct quotes. Here are the few interesting quotes from the piece: “We learned what people really wanted two months faster” (on launching early features in her Google Maps days). “[Search is a] constant evolution [rather than a complete overhaul].” “Things start slowly and then quickly. Suddenly the combination of the tech and the product and the use and the understanding and the polish and everything comes together, and then everyone needs it.” “It’s really exciting to work on search at a time when you think the tech can genuinely change what people can search for.” “[Before generative AI] people did not go to Google Search and say, ‘How many rocks should I eat per day?’ They just didn’t.'” (Context: Google AI Overviews under fire for giving dangerous and wrong answers) And one indirect quote, where Bloomberg summarizes her thoughts on AI: “Google’s generative AI products still carry disclaimers that the technology is experimental. Testing tools in public helps them get better, Reid says. She’s convinced that, as with other changes to search, AI will get people to use Google even more than they did before.” Why we care. Many websites started to lose traffic when Google launched AI Overviews last May and as AI Overviews expanded. Google was a fairly reliable source of organic search traffic for over two decades – but the rules are changing. No, SEO isn’t dead. But old SEO strategies and tactics will need to evolve and playbooks will need to be rewritten. View the full article
