  3. László Toth, a Hungarian Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor, emigrates to the United States after World War II in search of a new life. After a rough start, a wealthy businessman recognises his talent and offers him a job that will change his life. This is a very brief summary of Brady Corbet’s film The Brutalist, which stars Adrien Brody as Toth. While the protagonist of this almost four-hour film is fictional, his story is inspired by many real figures. During the rise of Nazism in Germany, and especially after the de facto demise of the Weimar Republic in 1933, many intellectuals, scientists and other educated people chose to emigrate in search of a more favourable climate in which to work. For many, it was also a matter of life and death. The legacy of Bauhaus Many of these émigrés were architects associated with the Bauhaus, the famous school of design and architecture established in 1919 in Weimar. The institution, which later moved to Dessau and then to Berlin, left a legacy that endures to this day. Bauhaus directors were among those who left Germany in this period. This included architect and Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius, who headed the school in Weimar and then Dessau, and designed the new building there. His Dessau successor Hannes Meyer also left, as did Mies van der Rohe, who headed the school in Dessau and Berlin, where the school was closed by the Nazi government. The Bauhaus building in Dessau, designed by Walter Gropius. [Photo: Wikimedia Commons] The Bauhaus was an indisputable cornerstone of interwar Germany’s cultural, political and social development, and while its architecture course was not established until about halfway through its existence, the school is worth studying from an architectural perspective. While they each had different methods and priorities, the three aforementioned architects espoused a form of modern architecture that reflected a much broader movement that sought to change – with only partial success – the aesthetics and ethics of architecture, and even of life, at the time. All three taught their students to break with the styles of the past to offer a progressive architecture that met the era’s physical, aesthetic and cultural needs. Of course, these men were not the only émigrés from Nazi Germany, but their stories (and those of other Bauhaus figures), can help us better understand this emigration that is often widely misunderstood. The Bauhaus American dream? When we refer to this emigration of German architects and intellectuals (or those culturally linked to Weimar Germany), the first image that comes to mind is emigration to the US, the land of opportunity – The Brutalist’s fictitious architect László Toth does just this. This migration is the best known, certainly the most common, but not the only one. Moreover, it usually inspires images of the individualistic architect, a (male, of course) creative genius who puts his constructive ideals above everything else. This image was popularised by Ayn Rand’s 1943 novel The Fountainhead, and by the 1949 King Vidor film of the same title, starring Gary Cooper. Gary Cooper and Kent Smith in The Fountainhead, 1949. [Image: Warner Brothers] In truth, the picture is more complex and problematic. While our three architects all have elements in common – a commitment to modern and transformative architecture that shaped, and was shaped by, contemporary life – they did not all emigrate to the US. Nor did they go at the same time, or with the same aspirations, political and ethical commitment, or prizing their own architecture above all else. Walter Gropius, who was from a well-off family, initially left Germany in 1934 for the UK before settling in Boston, Massachusetts in 1937 as a prominent faculty member of the newly established Harvard University Graduate School of Design. There, in addition to teaching, he set up an architectural practice called The Architects’ Collaborative. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, undoubtedly the most brilliant of the group, remained in Germany until 1938, where he continued to work in a not entirely hospitable political climate. He eventually settled in Chicago as director of the Illinois Institute of Technology, and began a brilliant career that would make him the US’ (an perhaps the world’s) defining post-war architect. His work was key to, among other things, developing the corporate office building that would epitomise American expansionist capitalism after the war. Portrait of Lilly Reich. [Photo: Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA] Here, it is worth mentioning his longstanding Berlin business partner, designer and architect Lilly Reich, who also taught at the Bauhaus. Until recently Reich was overlooked, both for her direct role in much of Mies van del Rohe’s work and her individual output. Fortunately, researchers such as Laura Martínez de Guereñu are now shining a light on her life and work. For her part, Reich opted to remain in her native Germany. Her status as a woman would undoubtedly have contributed to this decision, though it is difficult to say to what extent. Socialist architectural visions As we can see, there were indeed women architects working in Germany at the time, even if their gender rendered them all but invisible. There were also, undoubtedly, many architects whose profile did not fit the mould of the strong-willed creative genius, but rather that of the progressive, politically committed intellectual. In many cases, these people were very close to communism and the alternative offered by Soviet Russia at the time. Hannes Meyer in 1928 [Photo: Hermann Bunzel/Wikimedia Commons] Hannes Meyer, the least well-known of the three Bauhaus directors mentioned here, chose this other path. His search for the ideal place to work did not include the individualistic, commercialised society of American capitalism, but rather, following his own communist leanings, that of the USSR, where he arrived in the late 1930s. His model was that of the architect fully in service to society, and he shunned any aesthetic or artistic protagonism. He was convinced that this type of architecture could only be practised in a classless society where the means of production belonged to the proletariat. He remained in Moscow until 1936, when the country, under Stalin’s dictatorship, became increasingly closed off to foreign presence. After returning to Germany, he emigrated again to Mexico in 1939, and worked prolifically for ten years amidst the progressive social and political reform programmes of president Lázaro Cárdenas. He eventually returned to his native Switzerland, where he died in 1954. The émigrés who followed in Meyer’s footsteps not only wanted to avoid the US, but also sought refuge where they could (or believed they could) best pursue their ideals. Instead of beautiful buildings, they envisioned an architecture that would help forge a new society and a new humanity. In fact, as per the architect and scholar Daniel Talesnik, there was arguably a “Red Bauhaus” made up of modern architects who, following their escape from Nazi Germany, worked for the Soviet government. These other cases, whose trajectory we have barely sketched here, have been less well known to both the general public and, until recently, to academics. However, this does not diminish their significance, and they deserve a greater place in history than they seem to have been given. 6. Good news: Spring is around the corner. By the time the ground is warm enough to receive your flower, vegetable, and herb starts, it’s a race to see how much production you can get from these plants before the season is over. The bigger the plant you start with, the better. That’s why I give my plants a head start by growing seedlings inside. Here's everything I'm starting indoors this month, and a few seeds you can direct sow outside, too. (If you've never grown from seed indoors before, don't be intimidated. It's incredibly rewarding, saves money, and will give you the gardening high you need while the weather is still terrible.) Start long-germinating flowers todayIt might be hard to imagine summer flowers right now, but some take forever to germinate. In those cases, starting them inside in January or February makes sense. Tall, spiky flowers like lupines, snapdragons, foxglove, hollyhock, stock and delphiniums all need the extra time inside in order to be bloom-ready this summer. You can also start your perennials such as echinacea and coneflower now, so they’re big and healthy by the time you put them in the ground in late spring. Spring vegetables need to be ready in four to five weeksSometimes people forget there’s a whole season before summer tomatoes and eggplants go in. You can have a productive (if short) spring crop if you plan appropriately. Start veggies including cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, hardy lettuce, chard, fennel, kale and kohlrabi right now. In many places, spinach and mustard greens only do well only in spring and fall, so get those seedlings started, too. All onions, leeks and celery should be started inside in February, as soon as possible, as they take a while to be ready to plant. While most people purchase three-year-old asparagus crowns and plant those, you can grow asparagus from seed. Growing delicate French varieties is only possible if you grow from seed, but be aware it will be years before you can harvest the spoils. Artichokes can also be grown from seed, although most people simply transplant a “pup” from an existing plant and grow it into a full-size start. In either case, artichokes and asparagus will go in the ground early in spring. Hardy herbs need a head start, tooTender herbs like basil and cilantro can wait, but herbs that have woody stems—like sage, lavender, winter thyme, and rosemary—need to be started now. These are possible to grow from seed, or you can take cuttings and attempt to establish them. These seedlings will go outside once the ground is warm enough, but next year they’ll overwinter outside. Direct-sow these seeds nowThere are a few seeds you can direct sow outside now. Poppies traditionally don’t transplant well, so the best course of action is to simply toss seeds around outside, and hope a small percentage of them germinate. You can also plant peas outside now—both edible and non-edible sweet peas. Don’t mix them together—sweet peas are highly toxic (though worthwhile for their smell and beauty). Edible peas should have their own area, and both will come up in early spring. You should be planting carrots while it is still raining, so they benefit from the help germinating, and beets, radishes, and turnips can be direct-sowed as soon as the ground is workable. Keep in mind, too, that tomato, pepper, and summer seeding gets underway next month. Make sure you’ve got the seeds you need now, so you’re ready. View the full article

  10. From devastating climate change to ongoing wars to the dismantling of the globe’s largest aid agency, there’s no shortage of problems facing the world. And now we can add another one to the list: An asteroid could conceivably hit the planet in just under eight years. And while the chances of that happening are very small, they have now nearly doubled. In December, the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in Chile, developed by the University of Hawaii and funded by NASA, discovered the existence of an asteroid known as 2024 YR4. That ATLAS should discover an asteroid is no surprise—there are millions of them in our cosmic neck of the woods alone. However, 2024 YR4 triggered the alarm at ATLAS because there’s a not-insignificant chance that the asteroid, which is about the size of the Eiffel Tower, may slam into Earth in 2032. Impact odds are rising At the time of the object’s discovery, NASA calculated that the chance of the asteroid actually hitting Earth—what it calls the “Impact Probability”—was about 1.3%. That means there was a 98.7% chance that the asteroid would miss us. Or to put that another way, there was a 1 in 83 chance that 2024 YR4 would hit us. Unfortunately, the impact probability of 2024 YR4 has now risen. As a matter of fact, the probability of the asteroid hitting Earth has nearly doubled to 2.3%, according to Sentry: Earth Impact Monitoring, an online tool provided by NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies. Now Sentry’s Impact Probability rating is classified as “2.3e-2,” which means there is now a 2.3% chance of 2024 YR4 slamming into the planet. NASA says this means the odds of impact are now 1 in 43. Yellow Zone warning NASA’s Sentry tool also reveals that the asteroid has a maximum hazard rating of 3 on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale. Torino is a scale that categorizes the effects an asteroid or comet’s impact would have on the Earth. The Torino Scale assigns both numeric ratings and color codes to such objects. The Torino Impact Hazard Scale runs from 0 to 10. A 0 rating means that a heavenly object poses no threat to the planet, while a 10 means, basically, we’re all going to die. (NASA is more tactful in its description of a level 10 event, stating, “A collision is certain, capable of causing global climatic catastrophe that may threaten the future of civilization as we know it, whether impacting land or ocean.”) Numerical classifications are further grouped into colors as well. A 0 is white, a 1 is green, 2-4 is yellow, 5-7 is orange, and 8-10 is red. A level 3 rating on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale means that 2024 YR4 is in the yellow zone, which the scale says “merits attention by astronomers.” “A close encounter, meriting attention by astronomers,” the Yellow Zone’s description reads. “Current calculations give a 1% or greater chance of collision capable of localized destruction.” However, there is some good news: A Yellow Zone warning doesn’t mean that impact is a certainty. “Most likely, new telescopic observations will lead to re-assignment to Level 0,” the zone’s description continues. But it also notes that “Attention by public and by public officials is merited if the encounter is less than a decade away.” The asteroid 2024 YR4 is less than a decade away. When might the 2024 YR4 asteroid hit Earth? Even though the odds of 2024 YR4 hitting Earth have risen, it is still much more likely than not that the asteroid will miss Earth entirely. However, if it were to impact Earth, it would likely do so on December 22, 2032. But that’s just its first chance to strike Earth. If it misses us then, 2024 YR4 gets more chances in 2039, 2043, 2047, and 2079. You can track NASA’s updates about the asteroid by using its Sentry: Earth Impact Monitoring tool. Should I worry about asteroid 2024 YR4? It seems pointless to worry because there’s not anything you as an individual can do about 2024 YR4. Besides, the odds are still in our favor that 2024 YR4 will miss Earth. And even if it hits us, it won’t be a civilization-ending event, though, depending on where it hits, it could devastate even a large city. And if it’s any consolation, NASA knows of no other asteroid that has the impact probability rating 2024 YR4 does. “Currently, no other known large asteroids have an impact probability above 1%,” NASA said in a January statement. So things will probably be fine in 2032 and beyond. Of course, even if we are spared an asteroid impact, we still have the zombie spiders to worry about. View the full article
  11. It’s game time for Meta’s wearables: The tech giant has bought two ad spots for its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses during Sunday’s Super Bowl broadcast, including one that has Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pratt wreaking havoc on Kris Jenner’s art collection. The star-studded spot is part of a bigger push to bring AI-powered wearables to the masses. Last week, Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the company had sold more than one million of its high-tech Ray-Bans in 2024, and hinted at plans to sell many more in the near future. “This will be a defining year that determines if we’re on a path towards many hundreds of millions and eventually billions of AI glasses,” he told investors during the company’s Q4 2024 earnings call. To that end, Meta plans to introduce new versions of its smart glasses later this year, including a high-end model that reportedly includes a small display capable of showing notifications and real-time translation. And the competition is not waiting around. Samsung has hinted at plans for developing its own AI glasses, and Chinese startups are looking to target U.S. consumers with Ray-Ban copycats this year. All this means that millions of people could soon walk around with cameras on their faces, challenging our understanding of privacy, and inevitably leading to friction. An AI wearable that sees what you see Meta released a first version of camera-equipped glasses in cooperation with Ray-Ban maker EssilorLuxottica in 2021, followed by a second-generation model in the fall of 2023. At first glance, the glasses look very similar to a typical pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses, save for a camera and a recording indicator that are visible upon closer inspection. The glasses also have dual speakers integrated into their temples, and an array of five microphones that can be used for both voice control and communication. Ray-Ban Meta glasses can take photos, record short video clips, and livestream via Instagram when paired with a smartphone. They can also be used as a replacement for wireless earbuds, allowing wearers to listen to music or podcasts, or take phone calls when paired via Bluetooth to a smartphone. The feature set that Meta leans into most these days is the ability to directly query the company’s AI assistant: Ray-Ban owners can ask Meta’s AI assistant to tell them about anything they’re looking at, which results in the glasses taking a photo and uploading it to the cloud. They can ask Meta AI what a street sign says, have it translate text, and even ask it to come up with recipes based on what the camera can spot in their fridge. Earlier this year, Meta even added the ability to have continuous conversations with its AI assistant using its Ray-Ban glasses. During those chats, video of everything the wearer is seeing is sent to the cloud and analyzed, allowing for complex back-and-forth interactions with follow-up questions while browsing store shelves, looking through record collections, or shopping at the farmer’s market—a pretty impressive feat, despite Meta AI still occasionally getting confused by very basic objects. Surprisingly little backlash, so far Inevitably, these features can also lead to bystanders getting captured by Meta’s glasses. When Google pioneered camera glasses in 2013, it faced a huge public backlash against this perceived invasion of privacy. Users of the Google Glass device were being called “glassholes” by critics, and the company discontinued the device soon after. Meta has gone to great lengths to avoid a similar fate. The glasses include a visible recording indicator, and second-generation Ray-Ban Metas block any photo and video capture if a user tries to cover that indicator light in any way. Meta also advises Ray-Ban wearers to respect other people’s privacy, and for instance not to wear them in public bathrooms, schools, or houses of worship. That hasn’t stopped some Ray-Ban owners from accidentally getting into trouble. Last fall, a Ray-Ban owner reported on Reddit that they had gotten thrown out of a movie theater over piracy allegations. “I wear RaybanMeta with prescription lenses so I can see,” the user in question wrote. “I did not live stream or anything, but apparently they’re banned from cinemas.” Other users have said they have gotten reprimanded for wearing their Ray-Bans in airplanes; two Harvard students made waves when they combined the glasses with image recognition technology to figure out the identity of random people on the street (a feature that the glasses themselves do not support out of the box). More insidiously, the alleged New Orleans bomber reportedly wore Meta’s smart glasses to scout locations for his attack. Despite all this, there has been relatively little backlash against the device yet. That could change once there are millions more in use. “There will be bad actors with that many pairs of glasses in market,” acknowledges Moor Insights & Strategy analyst Anshel Sag. He thinks Meta could do more educating people about the way these glasses function. “I’ve had some people assume it’s just always recording,” he says. “That’s not true.” Next up: New devices, including one with a display Meta has plans to launch “half a dozen” additional wearables in the future, the company’s CTO Andrew Bosworth recently told staffers in a leaked memo. Part of that line-up will reportedly also be a first model with a visual component. With an integrated display in just one lens, it will be a far cry from the kind of augmented reality glasses Meta wants to sell in a few years. Users won’t be able to view 3D holograms or play immersive games with it, and the size of the virtual display will be comparably small. Still, by positioning its first generation of AR glasses as supercharged smart glasses, Meta may have found a way to make people embrace lower-end specs. Keeping these kinds of devices simpler comes with lots of added benefits, says David Goldman, the VP of marketing of AR optics startup Lumus. “You’re going to have a much longer battery life” with a smaller display, he explains, adding that functionality like live translation of a person talking to you actually is less disruptive with a smaller display. “People will be pleasantly surprised by the added value,“ Goldman says. At the same time, Meta will continue to make AI glasses without displays, with a recent Bloomberg report suggesting that the next wave of models will include at least one optimized for outdoor sports. Zuckerberg told investors recently that the company was aiming to sell up to ten million units of its next-generation AI glasses—a number that Sag believes is within reach. “The Super Bowl ad will most likely be a planting the seed moment in a lot of people’s eyes who haven’t met someone wearing them yet,” he says. “Then, we might get a new model this year paired with an aggressive ad campaign to push sales into the 5–10 million territory.” View the full article

I love Kindle e-readers, and have been using them since the first Kindle Paperwhite came out in 2012. One thing I've been looking forward to since I first had one in my hands is the color version. It finally came out in November with the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, which is on sale for $229.99 (originally $279.99), the lowest price it has been since its release, according to price-tracking tools. Right now, you can also get it with three months of free Kindle Unlimited (it'll auto-renew unless you cancel it), and if you're a Prime Member, you can fill it up with some free e-books. Here's what you can expect from the Colorsoft. Amazon Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition (32 GB) $229.99 at Amazon $279.99 Save $50.00 Get Deal Get Deal $229.99 at Amazon $279.99 Save $50.00 The Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition is exactly what it sounds like: a Kindle e-reader with color. It's essentially the same hardware and design as the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, with the same dimensions, weight, and 32GB of storage. It also has the same features, like the automatically adjusting front light, the IPX8 rating waterproof rating, wireless charging, and an ad-free lock screen that either shows the cover for the book you're reading, or generic wallpapers. The battery life is shorter than a Paperwhite, with eight weeks compared to 12, but still plenty for most people. The seven-inch color E Ink display seems to be the industry standard 300 pixels per inch (ppi) for black-and-white content and 150ppi for color, according to PCMag's review. If you love reading comics, this is where the Colorsoft Signature Edition shines. The colors look like printed newspaper quality, and there's a feature that provides a close-up of each comic panel so you can enjoy the art and read it without having to zoom in. Although the screen doesn't get too bright (94 nits of brightness), the screen does a good job at deflecting glare. The auto light adjuster is nice if you're coming indoors and outdoors a lot. I personally love the warm and cool front-light settings, as I like to read at night and not stress my eyes before bed. Considering it's only $29.99 more to upgrade from the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition to the color version, it makes it a great deal for anyone who needs a bit more color in their life. 13. As Los Angeles reels from deadly January wildfires that destroyed thousands of homes, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday he will order the state to advance long-delayed regulations requiring homeowners in high-risk areas to clear combustible materials around their homes. His office didn’t immediately say if the executive order will set a timeline for implementing the rule, which was passed by lawmakers in 2020 and originally set to take effect by January 1, 2023. Newsom is expected to sign it after his trip to Washington to advocate for disaster aid. The rule requires homeowners to clear materials like dead plants and wooden furniture within 5 feet (1.5 meters) of homes in fire-prone areas. As multiple fires roared through L.A. neighborhoods in January, the regulations still weren’t written, and the state Board of Forestry and Fire Protection told the Associated Press last month it had no firm timeline for completing them. State officials said in a November meeting that the draft language likely won’t be considered by the board until late this year, though the state has already encouraged homeowners to take up the practice on its website. In response to questions from the AP last month, lawmakers who sponsored the original legislation said they were frustrated by the delay. Experts said it is likely the more stringent requirements could have saved some homes from the Palisades Fire, which became the most destructive fire in Los Angeles city history. Most of the neighborhoods ravaged by the Palisades Fire are in areas that must follow state requirements to keep the immediate surroundings of their homes free of combustible materials and would be subject to the new rules because they are deemed at highest fire risk by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The fire, driven by hurricane-force winds that spread embers by air, destroyed at least 5,000 structures across areas including Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and Topanga Canyon. Under the latest proposal, existing homes would have three years to comply with the regulations, so it is not clear how many homes would have been saved. But clearing the immediate area around homes likely would have made some difference, several experts said. “These steps will spur proactive actions to defend the most vulnerable homes and eliminate combustible material within five feet of homes to reduce the risk of a home igniting in an ember-driven fire,” California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot said. His agency oversees the board that is responsible for writing the regulations. The executive order will also direct CalFire to add about 1.4 million new acres of land onto the fire-prone map, which will subject homeowners in those areas to the home-hardening rules. Some cities and homeowners are already taking on the practice voluntarily. “To meet the needs of increasingly extreme weather, where decades-old buildings weren’t planned and designed for today’s realities, these proposals are part of a bigger state strategy to build wildfire and forest resilience from forest management, to huge investments in firefighting personnel and equipment, community hardening, and adopting state-of-the-art response technologies,” Newsom said in a statement. State officials told the AP last month that Newsom has proposed to spend $25 million to help homeowners follow the rules and other defensible-space requirements. California already enforces some of the most stringent defensible-space laws in the West, which require homeowners in fire-prone places to keep the area immediately around their homes free of landscaping and other materials that could catch fire. The state began requiring homeowners in high-risk areas to clear flammable materials within 30 feet (9 meters) of their houses in the 1960s and then expanded the rules to include areas within 100 feet (30.5 meters) of structures in 2006. The latest measure creates a new “ember-resistant” zone, dubbed “zone zero,” that bars things like brush, wooden fencing, furniture, sheds, and mulch within 5 feet (1.5 meters) of homes. The idea is to clear all materials that could catch fire from flying embers carried by winds and spread to the structure. State officials and researchers said embers are responsible for 90% of structures destroyed by wildfire. The zone-zero law passed with bipartisan support after California experienced record-breaking fires in 2017 and 2018, including a fire that wiped out the town of Paradise, destroying more than 17,000 structures and killing 85 people. —Trân Nguyễn, Associated Press View the full article

These platforms vary widely in video editing tools, short video creation capabilities, and music integration options. Some focus on professional-grade editing features, allowing users to produce content that can rival traditional media in quality. Others prioritize unique filters and effects, enabling creators to add a personal or whimsical touch to their videos. The availability of music choices also differs significantly across platforms; some apps offer extensive libraries or unique tracks to make your content stand out. Moreover, many of these alternatives cater to specific communities or interests, providing tailored functionalities such as special effects for comedy, beauty filters for lifestyle content, or thematic stickers for storytelling. This variety guarantees that each creator can discover a platform that aligns with their creative requirements and tastes, enabling them to express themselves in ways that connect with their audience. Niche Platforms for Specific Video Content Beyond the broad appeal of platforms like TikTok, niche apps carve out spaces for specialized interests. Whether you’re into dance, comedy, DIY, or any other genre, there’s likely an app that caters to your specific taste. These specialized platforms foster communities of like-minded individuals, offering tailored features and content discovery that resonate with specific audiences. By focusing on particular genres, these apps ensure your content reaches viewers who are most passionate about your chosen theme. For instance, platforms dedicated to music and dance might offer advanced audio mixing and synchronization tools, while those centered on comedy could provide unique filters and effects to enhance the humor in videos. DIY and educational apps might emphasize instructional formats and detailed editing options to clearly convey complex ideas. You may even look for integrations with apps like Pinterest to increase the reach of this type of content. This specialization not only enhances the creation experience for content producers but also enriches the viewing experience for audiences, making it easier for users to find and engage with content that matches their interests and hobbies. The best snack holiday of the year is finally upon us, and while I hope everyone has their cocktail weenie plans figured out, I’d like to remind you that many other fillings rival the wee hot dog. One of my favorite things to wrap in a pastry blanket is a pickle, but this year I have a new obsession. It’s fry-able, grill-able, bake-able cheese, and it is absolutely incredible wrapped in pastry. How to make the best cheese in a blanketUnfortunately, mozzarella doesn't cut it here. Grilling cheese, also called frying cheese, is the best choice—it's a high-protein cheese that doesn’t completely liquify under heat. I tried wrapping mozzarella sticks and even cheddar for this job and it was a disaster. Those cheeses have too much water and fat strung throughout; by the time the Pillsbury crescent dough began to brown, the cheese would burst through the pastry and run out. (And yes, I tried an egg wash. My seams were sealed.) Then I remembered that frying cheese could do the trick. It melts and stretches just slightly, which makes for a soft, chewy, sometimes squeaky texture. It’s creamy and salty, which is perfect for snacking and pairs well with any dipping sauces. Sure enough, it can stand up to the heat of the air fryer and oven while the pastry puffs and browns, without melting out into a terrible puddle. You can cut the cheese in small or large pieces, and wrap them in a strip or completely sealed in a pocket. Credit: Allie Chanthorn Reinmann I’ve been using it in agua panela con queso, a comforting hot drink, and pan frying slabs of it for meals. The most alluring part of this type of cheese is that when it directly contacts a hot pan—or air-fryer grate, in our case—the cheese crisps and browns. Thanks to the Maillard reaction, new delicious flavors form along with this tempting crisp and color. Credit: Allie Chanthorn Reinmann You can wrap these up in numerous ways. As you can see in the picture above, I wrapped them in small morsels to mimic the size of pigs in a blanket, but you can also cut the cheese into long sticks and fully encase them in pastry. Try wide planks for big cheesy pockets. Personally, I like the thin sticks, where the ends ooze out and brown. How to make this snack even betterYou can take or leave this advice, but I sprinkled a light dusting of garlic parmesan seasoning salt I got from Walmart over the surface before wrapping the cheese chunks. Best idea of my day. The tiniest amount brought out a wonderful savory flavor, but don’t go crazy or it will become overwhelming. Of course, you can just do a sprinkle of your own seasoning choices. Try salt with chili powder, garlic powder, and cumin. Don’t forget that cheese can pair with sweet, too. Dust them with cinnamon sugar for a surprising sweet treat. This recipe uses the air fryer because its speed can’t be beat, but you could do this in a conventional oven for sure. Just raise the temperature up to 375°F and bake them for 10 to 12 minutes or until browned to your preference. Cool them briefly on a wire rack before serving. Cheese in a Blanket RecipeIngredients: 1 tube Pillsbury crescent dough sheet 1 block grilling cheese (halloumi or any of the options above) Optional dry seasonings for sprinkling (garlic salt, or any seasoning mix) 1. Set your air fryer to the “air fry” setting and preheat it to 325°F. This likely only takes a minute. 2. Unwrap the Pillsbury dough and sprinkle the surface with a light dusting of seasoning salt (if using). 3. Slice the grilling cheese into your preferred size of rectangle. Wrap each piece of cheese with dough and make sure the seam overlaps. Let them rest seam-side down. 4. Place the wrapped cheese (seam-side down) into the air fryer fitted with a grate. Make sure they have a bit of space around them because the pastry will puff. Air fry them for four to six minutes, or until browned to your liking. If they’re on a grate you won’t need to flip them, but if you’re using a liner then you may need to flip them to brown the bottoms. Cool briefly and enjoy alone or with any delicious dips that make their way to your Super Bowl snack spread. View the full article

Unlike wired floodlight cameras, this one doesn’t require complex installation—just mount it using the included screws, connect to 2.4GHz wifi, and you’re set. Its 160-degree field of view covers a lot of ground, and its color night vision works well, though colors aren’t as vibrant in low-light conditions. Motion alerts are reportedly fast and accurate, and thanks to its Advanced Object Detection feature, you’ll know if it’s a person, animal, or car—not just a random movement. The floodlight itself is dimmable and has a 4,000k white color temperature, making it bright enough to deter intruders but not blinding if you just need some visibility. You can turn it on manually via the Arlo Secure app or have it trigger automatically with motion detection. The camera also has a 12x digital zoom with Auto Zoom and Tracking, so it can follow movement in its frame. The battery is rechargeable and lasts several months, but if you’d rather not deal with recharging, Arlo sells an optional solar panel (or you can get it bundled for $179.99, down from $309.98 right now) or an outdoor magnetic cable ($49.99) for continuous power. A small catch: To access recorded footage, you’ll need an Arlo Smart Plan subscription—starting at $2.99/month for one camera and $9.99/month for up to five cameras (or more if you want 4K recording). Performance-wise, the daytime video is crisp with excellent color, and night vision is solid up to 25 feet. Motion detection is reliable, notifications arrive quickly, and cloud-stored footage is sharp. There’s some minor barrel distortion, but it’s not a dealbreaker, notes the PCMag review. Additionally, it works with Alexa, Google Assistant, and IFTTT applets, giving it solid smart home integration. View the full article

  23. There's a brand new Apple app in town: Apple Invites gives you everything you need to organize a get-together, from picking a guest list beforehand, to sharing photos and videos of the event afterwards. While you need to be a paying iCloud subscriber to create events, anyone can respond to and interact with them—but predictably, there's no native Android app. And I think that's something Apple needs to look at. Admittedly, Android users aren't left out of the Apple Invites party altogether, but they have to put up with a slower and less capable web-based interface in their mobile browser—an option a lot of iOS apps go for, rather than developing an actual Android version. You can't view photos and videos without an iCloud account; adding events to your Google Calendar is a clunky process; and, of course, you have to navigate back to the right webpage whenever you want to check up on the event. Apple has been ignoring Android for a long time—its only Android apps are a rather sluggish Apple Music app, a tool for detecting unauthorized trackers, and an app for switching from Android to iOS—but the launch of an event-planning app really drives home the drawbacks of this approach. Apple Invite is great for organizing events, as long as everyone who's coming has an iPhone. We know why Apple does this: It's a matter of public record that Apple wants users locked into its ecosystem, rather than—horror of horrors—switching to Android. Having trouble sending photos and videos to an elderly parent who's not on iOS? Don't stress about it, just buy them an iPhone—that's Tim Cook's advice (to be fair, since the Apple CEO made those remarks, Apple's Messages app has added RCS support). Apple wants there to be friction between iOS and Android, so that iPhone users stay where they are. And while you could argue its approach to messaging is working at stopping people switching (at least in the U.S.—the rest of the world has moved to WhatsApp), would there really be a mass exodus to Google's mobile operating system if Apple Invites for Android was introduced? What if Apple embraced Android? I can at least get Apple Music on Android. Credit: Lifehacker I actually like Apple's hardware and software a lot—I'm a big Apple Music fan—but at this stage in the Apple vs. Google battle, I think it's doing Apple's apps more harm than good to keep them locked away on iOS. Apple sells an awful lot of iPhones of course, so perhaps its exec team don't need my business strategy advice, but the tech landscape is more cross-platform and service-driven than ever before. Take Apple TV Plus for example, which I subscribe to: Apple has thankfully pushed out an app for Google TV, but there's still no Android app (you can access it through Chrome on Android, but as with Apple Invites, it's not a brilliant experience). Surely an Android app would gain Apple more subscribers, without tempting too many iPhone owners to suddenly switch over to the rival platform? Then we have FaceTime: Available on Android, technically speaking, but you need to follow a link through a web browser to get connected. (Sound familiar?) Okay, it's not going to take you long to follow that link—but in terms of convenience, notification management, interacting with other apps, and so on, a native FaceTime app for Android would be a whole lot better. Apple Photos is another example of an app that works well on Apple devices and not very well anywhere else: It boasts nicely done features for sharing snaps and videos with family and friends, as long as none of those people have the temerity to invest in an Android phone. Google Photos, by comparison, is super-simple on any device. We know Apple is pushing its digital services as smartphone sales stagnate, but Android users aren't going to invest in an Apple TV+ or iCloud subscription if they have to go through Chrome to get at all the features on offer. Google has gone completely the other way: All its apps are available on iOS, and are usually more popular than the Apple alternatives. As a tech journalist who has to jump between devices and platforms all the time, one of the main reasons I mostly stick to Android when it comes to phones is that I can get at all of my apps everywhere. Only making a native Apple Invites app available for iOS isn't going to make me switch to the iPhone—but if there was a native Android app available, I might actually use it. View the full article

  25. We are less than two weeks away from the 95th anniversary of the discovery of Pluto, the ice-caked, rocky sphere orbiting around 3.7 billion miles from the sun. To mark the occasion, The Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, where Pluto was discovered, is hosting its sixth annual "I Heart Pluto" festival. But should they? Is Pluto even a planet? According to a recent YouGov poll, 35% of Americans think Pluto is not a planet. It's something else, according to them. But they are all wrong—kind of. To get to the bottom of Pluto's planet status, I tracked down planetary scientist Dr. Will Grundy—who you might recognize from academic papers like "Measurement of D/H and 13C/12C ratios in methane ice on Eris and Makemake: Evidence for internal activity,"— and asked him flat out: Pluto, planet or fraud? The case for Pluto's planet-nessAccording to Dr. Grundy, Pluto is a planet. "I use the word 'planet' to refer to it, and most of the planetary science community does too," Grundy said. "Pluto's got everything I like in a planet, in spades. It's got a satellite system. It's got atmosphere with interesting weather patterns. It's got very complicated seasonal cycles. It's got all kinds of active geology going on... it's got everything you want." So Pluto is a planet. Case closed. Well maybe not totally closed. The case against Pluto's planet-nessAccording to The International Astronomical Union, Pluto is not a planet. The IAU shook the world in 2006 when it took Pluto's status as a planet away. According to the IAU, to be a planet, you must do all of the following: Orbit the sun. Have enough mass for your own gravity to pull you into a nearly round shape. Have cleared the area around your orbit of other significant objects. Like my friend Dave, Pluto has only met two of these criteria. That third one is too much for Pluto. Therefore, the IAU says Pluto can't sit at the cool kids table with Venus and Saturn; its proper place is with bitch-ass dwarf planets like Quaoar, Sedna, and Orcus. Why Pluto's "planet" status is an issue Pluto's demotion was partially caused by us getting better at spotting planets (or "dwarf planets," if you prefer). In the early 2000s, astronomers identified Haumea, Eris, Makemake, and other balls that orbit our sun. They'd all have to be call "planets" if the older definition of the word was used. So the IAU punted. "They had a moment of a crisis of strength of will," Grundy said. "They freaked out because they were realizing that there was going to be a whole bunch of additional planets, and that just panicked them." So the cowards at the IAU came up with guidelines for what makes a planet a planet, based, seemingly, on the traditional planets we all know and love, and read about in astrology books. According to many scientists, this was a mistake. "They adopted a definition from folk culture in place of the scientific definition, and it's embarrassing for them to have done this," Grundy said. "They didn't want to have to be announcing a new planet every year and then have some expectation that, you know, school kids are gonna have to memorize 15 of them, and now three years later, it's 20 of them, and so on and so forth." According to Grundy, the more planets, the better. "Have you ever met a little kid that likes dinosaurs and is offended when they discover another one?" Grundy asked. Is Pluto actually two planets? How about this to blow your mind: Pluto is two planets. Boom! Shots fired. Pluto's largest moon, Charon, is almost half the size of Pluto. "I would consider Charon big enough to be a planet," Grundy said. "It has geology and all kinds of processes going on. What more could you ask for?" If it sounds like just stretching the definition of "planet" to mean whatever you want, that's how words work. The scientific community talks about planets more than anyone else, and they don't have a problem with it using the word in all kinds of ways, including in reference to Pluto. "If you listen to a talk on planetary geology, you'll hear the word used in a different way than if you go to a talk on the early evolution of the solar system," Grundy said. "It really just depends on your focus." Pluto doesn't care if it's a planet or notThe question of whether Pluto is a planet or not isn't really about the celestial body. It's about the way we label things, and the way the universe refuses to conform to human taxonomies. No matter what we call Pluto, it'll still be out there, doing its Pluto thing. "Textbook authors seem to always seek authority. They want a definitive answer, because they don't want to be wrong. But that's not really the way nature works. Nature is very messy and muddy," Grundy said. "We used to categorize whales with other fishes because they lived in the ocean. We don't do that anymore, because we know they're mammals, and we know the the phylogenetic origins. But why do we care more about phylogenetic origins than we care about location? The mindset evolves, and it doesn't evolve in everyone at the same rate and in the same direction." View the full article
