  2. CC BY-ND Five years after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted office life, American workplaces are settling into a new rhythm. Employees in remote-friendly jobs now spend an average of 2.3 days each week working from home, a research team that tracks remote employment has found. And when you look at all workers – and not just those in remote-friendly positions – they’re working remotely 1.4 days a week, or 28% of the time. That’s a huge change from 2019, when remote work accounted for only 7% of the nation’s paid workdays, even if it’s down from the height of the pandemic in 2020, when 61.5% of all work was remote. And it’s a giant leap from 1965, the dawn of telework. At that time, fewer than 0.5% of all paid workdays were out of the office, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As management professors who study remote work and collaboration, we’ve learned a lot about remote work’s challenges and its often underappreciated advantages. In analyzing the latest data, we’ve observed that employers and employees are still trying to strike the balance between working from home and at the office. That’s why employers’ requirements for in-person work don’t always align with their employees’ preferences. Hybrid work is on the rise Employers swiftly made the jump to remote work in 2020. Zoom, along with other previously unfamiliar collaboration software companies, became commonplace overnight. Five years later, many employers, including JPMorgan, TikTok, Amazon and the federal government, are rejecting remote work, demanding that employees return to the office full time. But these examples are not the norm. According to Flex Index, which tracks the workplace strategies of over 10,000 U.S. companies quarterly, fully in-office work is on the decline. At the start of 2023, 49% of employers insisted that their staff report to the office daily. That percentage fell to 32% at the end of 2024. Companies are also retreating from remote-only work. While 31% of employers were fully remote in 2023, only 25% had remained fully remote at the end of 2024. Instead, companies are increasingly turning to hybrid arrangements, in which employees spend a part of their week at the office. About 20% of professional workplaces were hybrid at the start of 2023. Just two years later, hybrid’s share had risen to 43%. Some industries are more remote than others The story of remote work is more complicated than general trends indicate. Its prevalence varies widely by industry, location and employer size. The technology, insurance, telecommunications, professional services, and media and entertainment industries are among the biggest adopters of long-term remote and hybrid arrangements. The states where remote and hybrid work are the most popular are Massachusetts, Washington, Oregon, Colorado and California. The states where it’s the least popular are Kentucky, Louisiana, Nevada, Nebraska and Alaska. In part, some of these regional differences are due to where remote-friendly industries like technology and insurance are concentrated. Businesses with 500 or fewer employees are the most likely to embrace remote work. Staying connected and coordinating with your colleagues is easiest with smaller teams, we’ve observed. Midsize employers, with 500 to 25,000 employees, are equally split across fully in-office, remote and hybrid strategies. Very large employers, which have 25,000 employees or more, are the most likely to adopt hybrid work. These patterns show that remote work tends to be more popular among small employers, and in remote-friendly industries and states, whereas hybrid work has found a home in large companies. What employees prefer The remote work story is complicated also because employees have developed different preferences for in-office work, hybrid work and remote work over the course of the pandemic and since it subsided. In 2024, roughly 25% of professional employees preferred office work, 35% preferred remote work, and 40% preferred hybrid work, according to research by Zoom. Even recent college graduates express a range of preferences: 15% prefer to work at an office, 20% prefer remote work, and 65% would rather have a hybrid schedule. However, the ideal balance of office and remote work remains a point of contention. While employees favor three days at home and two in the office, employers prefer the opposite: three days in the office and two working remotely, the Zoom survey found. Generally, the future of work looks hybrid. But the remote work of the lockdown days – what’s now known as “fully remote” – is also here to stay. This is good news for those who prefer fully remote work. These employees are often parents or are caring for adults in need of assistance. They may live in rural communities or reside too far from their offices to regularly commute. Many LGBTQ+ employees and people of color have expressed a preference for remote work as a way to limit the microaggressions they experience on the job. On the fifth anniversary of the COVID-19 lockdown, there’s no one-size-fits-all workplace. And we believe that’s a good thing. VO2 max is a measure of cardiovascular (or aerobic) fitness. There are other types of measurements that can give you a sense of how fit you are, but VO2 max is one of the simpler metrics to follow. It’s a two-digit number, and the higher it is, the fitter you are. A sedentary person might have a VO2 max around 20; an athlete might have one over 50. The technical definition is that it’s the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use per minute while exercising, divided by your body weight. The higher that number, the better your heart and lungs are at getting oxygen to your muscles, and the better your muscles are at using energy for exercise. How is VO2 max measured? To get a true VO2 max reading, you need to take a test in an exercise lab with a max that measures the amount of oxygen you’re breathing. Obviously, a wearable can’t provide that on its own. But wearables like Whoop, Garmin watches, and Apple Watches can estimate your cardio fitness through other means. Most commonly, they’ll compare your heart rate to how quickly you can run or walk. If you can jog along at a pretty fast clip while your heart rate is low, you’re probably pretty fit and have a high VO2 max. On the other hand, if your heart rate soars when you’re just trying to go out for an easy walk, you probably have low cardio fitness and thus a low VO2 max. That’s the general idea, anyway—the exact calculation will vary from one device to another. How Whoop uses VO2 maxI expected Whoop to use the same walking/running-based type of calculation as the other wearables I’m familiar with, but the company’s description makes it sound like something more complicated (and harder to verify) is going on. “Whoop estimates your VO2 Max using a proprietary algorithm trained on gold-standard laboratory data from a diverse set of Whoop members,” it says. That’s not very helpful. It continues: “To calculate your score, the algorithm factors your continuous physiological data (including resting heart rate and heart rate variability), your exercise patterns, and GPS-tracked performance metrics (when enabled). It also accounts for how VO2 Max naturally changes with age and incorporates physical factors that influence oxygen utilization, like height, weight, and biological sex.” So GPS-tracked activities can be included in the calculation, but apparently aren’t necessary. This makes me wonder what the Whoop band is actually measuring to determine your VO2 max—or is it just doing some kind of AI-powered guess at what people with your metrics tend to have as their VO2 max? I’ve reached out to the company and will update if it is able to give me more information. I don’t have a VO2 max in my Whoop app at the moment, since it requires 14 recoveries (nights of sleep, basically) to give you that information, and I haven’t been wearing my Whoop lately. Match Group’s new CEO Spencer Rascoff sent a letter to employees Thursday outlining his vision for the company, while also acknowledging the dating giant has fallen flat when it comes to public sentiment. Rascoff, who cofounded Zillow and served as chief executive for a decade, was appointed Match Group CEO in early February to shake up the beleaguered parent company of Tinder, Hinge, and OkCupid. Rascoff isn’t entirely a newcomer to the dating economy: He joined Match Group’s board in 2024. “To reach our full potential, we must confront a hard truth: we haven’t always met the high standards we set for the user experience,” Rascoff said in the letter, which was shared exclusively with Fast Company. “Too often, our apps have felt like a numbers game rather than a place to build real connections, leaving people with the false impression that we prioritize metrics over experience. That needs to change.” Some users have become dismayed with dating apps, taking to social media to complain about their experiences. They often share tips about “hacking” the algorithm, under the unproven belief that apps like Hinge and Tinder aren’t showing them all of the matches they’d be interested in. Rascoff said that going forward, users need to be at the core of every choice. “Every product decision, policy, and innovation must be guided by their experience and outcomes,” he said. “Trust is the foundation of real connections, and we are committed to rebuilding it with urgency, accountability, and an unwavering focus on the user.” Rascoff outlined his priorities for the company, believing the five points will drive its transformation. They include “users first,” “innovate quickly,” “details matter,” “prioritizing transparency, safety and authenticity” and the idea that “human connection is the highest calling.” Users First. Every decision should be guided by the people who participate on our platforms in service of creating innovative products that genuinely enhance human connection. Innovate Quickly. Speed is a competitive advantage. We must move quickly, test bold ideas, and scale innovations efficiently, allowing us to stay ahead while maintaining excellence and reliability. Details Matter. Small improvements make a big difference. Every pixel counts. That means prioritizing design and usability, improving algorithms to surface better matches, reducing friction in conversations, and making every step of the experience intuitive and meaningful. Prioritizing Transparency, Safety & Authenticity. Trust must be at the core of the experience. This is an ethical imperative, but also a business imperative. We will be clear about the changes we’re making and ensure users and employees always know where we stand. Human Connection is the Highest Calling. Helping people find love, friendship, and community is one of the most meaningful missions in tech. We take that responsibility and privilege seriously.” Match Group excelled during the COVID-19 pandemic, with millions of users stuck at home and looking for connection. At the time, the company invested in things like audio and video chatting features. But as the world returned to normal, users began to tire of dating apps (Tinder, in particular, faced challenges) and opted for in-person connections. Rising prices also pushed many to stop paying for pricey subscriptions as they tightened their wallets. That shift back to the old school dating scene has spooked Wall Street. Shares have fallen more than 9% from the same time a year ago, trading above $30.10. That’s down more than 82% from its peak in October 2021. Some activist investors have also pushed for changes in the past year. Rascoff didn’t touch on Wall Street in his letter to employees, but the focus on revitalizing users is ultimately what likely would reposition the health of the company. “We know that listening to users isn’t enough—we need to move with urgency and increased accountability,” Rascoff said. “I’ll be working with leaders across the organization to streamline operations, drive efficiency, make faster decisions, act more nimbly, and invest in growth areas—ensuring that every effort is aligned with delivering better connections, deeper authenticity, and real value.” As part of this, Rascoff is “increasing expectations” on being in office. The company declined to comment on what that will look like or what current office guidelines are. Match is also creating a confidential channel named “DM Me If…” for employees to offer feedback and share product ideas. “When our apps work, they create love stories, lifelong partnerships, and real human connections. When they don’t, they lead to frustration, distrust, and disengagement,” Rascoff said. View the full article
  6. Chromecast as a brand has been going through it. Second-gen Chromecast and Chromecast Audio have been plagued with a strange glitch that essentially leaves these devices unusable. Users are not happy. Google, for their part, has advised not to factory reset the devices as a workaround, saying that the company is working on an official fix. In the meantime, Google rolled out an unrelated update for Chromecast with Google TV. The company no longer sells this device, but even still, issued a long-awaited Android 14 update for Chromecast with Google TV. The release notes say, with this update, “The Google TV Streamer Voice Remote supports Find My Remote and Customizable Button,” which should be welcome additions to users of this remote. In addition, Chromecast with Google TV users now have security patch updates up through January of this year, as well as various system stability and improvements. On the surface, this update appears minor, but genuinely useful, so it'd only make sense to install it right away. However, Google might have been a bit overconfident with its claim of "stability and improvements" here. Chromecast with Google TV users are complaining that this update is breaking critical features on their devices. On the 9to5Google news post about this update, one commenter says this update broke their local media implementation, saying the device was utilizing too little power, even though their setup should provide plenty of input and worked with Android 12 without issue. Other users say it broke their USB drive detection: No matter what they do, their drives are identified as "safely ejected," but won't be read. One user explicitly says they'll avoid this update, because of the other commenters' experiences. A post about the update on r/AndroidTV reveals other complaints, as well. Some users' devices crash when scrolling through the "Display and Sound" settings. Another user can't cast on from Chrome on their desktop machine following the update. It's a tricky situation for Chromecast with Google TV users: On the one hand, they now have access to an extra couple months of security updates, which is always important to install when available. On the other, however, the update breaks key features you might frequently use your Chromecast with Google TV device for, including casting, USB drives, and running media locally. The update is still quite new, so there might even be more bugs yet to be discovered. If you have to updateAs it stands, you might be better off waiting to install this update until Google can address these issues. Several years ago I took a step back in my career to work in a less high-pressure environment. The shift was incredible for my work life balance — I am much more present with my children, rarely bring home work stress, and am able to regularly take time away to volunteer at school events. We are financially secure and the money is decent. However, this organization frequently is a mess. I regularly find myself flabbergasted at how things that wouldn’t be an issue at other jobs become Big Things at this organization, requiring multiple meetings at various senior levels to remediate. Good news and progress is met with administrative drama, and frequently thwarted altogether by red tape and incompetence. It was kind of a fun challenge at first, but now it is absolutely maddening. At the same time, no one really cares, so there is no pressure, and I am very free to live my personal life How do I … stop caring? In my time here, I’ve changed what I can at this organization and am now trying to accept what I can’t, but I’m just. so. tired. of feeling like there is no point to any of it. Any words of advice from folks that have been there? Is it time to run before my discontent at work seeps into my personal bliss? Or is there a way to put up a mental wall? I’ve got about another five years before my youngest doesn’t need me as much. Help! Sometimes it can help to get really, really clear in your own head about exactly what you’re getting from the job, and exactly what you are trading in exchange for income. In this case, that might mean getting really clear on the fact that you are trading your time for money, period. You are not there to fix the organization, or to care more about the problems than people above you do. You are there to do Job X and nothing more. Sometimes that’s impossible. Maybe you find the way they operate so maddening that you simply can’t be there five days a week without it destroying your morale or your mental health. If that’s the case, then it’s time to move on. But sometimes, with a concerted effort you can decide that it’s Not Your Problem. If they want to run their organization this way, so be it — you figure it’s their prerogative and you’ll continue doing Job X (and only Job X) and they will continue putting money in your bank account every two weeks, and the trade will be complete. Alternately, sometimes you can look at it as an educational experience: think of yourself as a sociologist who’s learning interesting lessons about certain types of group dynamics. You don’t need to care that much because you’re just there to observe, not engage in any deep way. (The trick there is to not let it make you so cynical that you bring bad habits to the next job.) Or maybe every time something maddening happens, you can remind yourself, “Not caring about this is why I have great work-life balance, and right now in this period of my life that’s the most important thing to me.” But maybe none of the advice above will work for you. For some people, it’s incredibly important to work for an organization that they feel good about. Without that, some people will lose all sense of connection to their work, and any interest in continuing on with it. If that’s you, that’s useful to know about yourself; it would mean you need to start working on getting out of there. But try getting really clear on what you are being paid for — which is not to solve this organization’s big problems — and see if that can be enough. View the full article

  12. Google is trying to add Gemini AI to all its products. We've even seen the Gemini button in Gmail (which you can disable if you wish). Now, the company is starting to get more specific with that email integration, using AI to automatically add events to your Google calendar if an email provides enough details for it. The feature is already rolling out, so Gemini Advanced subscribers and Google Workspace for Business users can expect to start seeing the new Add to Calendar button, powered by Gemini, when relevant. It'll be right next to the "Summarize this email" button, above the email's body. As an example, let's say you have an email discussing an upcoming meeting with your boss. Press the "Add to Calendar" button, and Google will automatically scan and parse the relevant details and create a Google Calendar event for you. Thankfully, Google isn't making this a completely autonomous process—the event will show up in a sidebar once generated, so you'll be able to check it for mistakes before you add it to your calendar (given how LLMs sometimes tend to hallucinate, this is a good idea). You can use the Edit button to make any changes to the proposed event, or to add more information. One thing Gemini can't do yet is invite others to the meeting, so for that, you'll need a trip to the Calendar app. The feature is also only available in English for now. According to Google, the Add to Calendar button might take up to two weeks to complete global rollout. The feature is only available in English language, and it only works on the web for now. And while it's limited to paying subscribers, it's available for all Business plan users, including the cheaper Business Starter plan.   16. Picture a packed stadium of fans in extreme weather, all clad in their favorite jerseys, cheering and cursing at their favorite American football team or European soccer club. Or a crush of screaming fans, singing and dancing in unison at a Taylor Swift or K-pop concert. Or a sea of costumed Star Wars fans, lightsabers aloft, filling up movie theaters on opening night of a new movie. Plenty of people like to watch sports, attend concerts, and go to the movies. But what about those fans—the diehard ones, if you will—whose dedication goes even further? The fans whose daily lives are deeply intertwined with their interests? Diehard fans tend to have a detailed, intricate knowledge. They collect, display, and cherish memorabilia. They flock to iconic “pilgrimage” places: King’s Cross Train Station in London for Harry Potter fans, or Graceland in Memphis, for Elvis devotees. Their interests inspire them, shaping how they behave and view the world. This level of devotion seems to go well beyond entertainment. Indeed, it may seem, well, almost religious. Since 2018, I have been studying the realm of “comic-con culture”: fandoms built on comic books, superheroes, science fiction, anime and manga, gaming, and cosplay. Based on my surveys and follow-up interviews, I have found that many dedicated fans describe something sacred about their experiences, something beyond entertainment and escapism. Defining ‘sacred’ What does “sacred” mean, exactly? A popular starting point is French sociologist Emile Durkheim and his 1912 treatise, The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life. One of Durkheim’s most enduring legacies is how he defined religion in terms of beliefs and practices about “sacred things” that unify a community. The sacred, he explained, is something a group sets apart as powerful, transcendent, and holy, clearly distinguished from the mundane world of everyday affairs. This conception of religion includes gods or the supernatural, but it is not exclusive to them. Other beliefs and practices can be sacred, too. Durkheim’s insights have inspired many scholars, including those who study fan behavior. In my own work as a sociologist, I organize this concept of the sacred into seven specific dimensions. For example, the sacred is powerful: a potent force that garners respect, fear, and awe. The sacred is transcendent: revered and dignified beyond everyday affairs. And the sacred provides meaning: a source of essential values and purpose. Comic-con culture For several years, I’ve been distributing surveys at comic conventions on the East Coast of the U.S. and conducting follow-up interviews. The questions gather a variety of data, but also measure whether fans experience their interests as sacred, and in what ways. The results are striking. While fans certainly enjoy entertainment and escape, their responses also highlight several aspects of how I define “sacredness”—particularly its ability to instill moral values, provide creative inspiration, and reinforce communal bonds. Many fans describe comic-con culture as a source of principles—such as inclusivity, compassion, and self-development—that guide their behavior. Comics “have always focused on issues of justice, inequality, power dynamics, and the ethics around things like use of force, etc., all of which have affected my own feelings and beliefs about ethical behavior,” one respondent shared. Other fans highlighted quotes from Spider-Man—“with great power comes great responsibility”—and Harry Potter: “We must choose between what is right and what is easy.” Another respondent spoke about the Jedi: the ancient order of monklike warriors who channel forces of good to help others and maintain peace in the Star Wars universe. This universe “personifies how to go about treating the world around me and trying to do ‘the next right thing,’” the fan explained. “The Jedi, though not perfect, help me have a personal code in how I treat people. . . . If ‘Jedi’ were a real religion I’d probably be an active participant.” Comic-con culture sparks passion and enjoyment; it is a wellspring of inspiration and creativity. The Japanese genres of anime and manga are “an art form of self-expression and it creates an [outlet] for individuals to express themselves freely,” one person wrote. In particular, they mentioned cosplay, which is short for “costume play”: the faithful re-creation of a favorite character from a game, movie, or comic, both in dress and mannerisms. Cosplayers are a mainstay of comic conventions, as are cosplay contests. Another remarked, “being a fan of tabletop RPGs [role-playing games] allows me to create collaborative stories with others. I consider this storytelling powerful and important.” Comic-con culture enables people to connect with like-minded individuals and forge meaningful relationships around these interests. It can also inspire a strong sense of fellowship. Highlighting the power of these connections, one respondent said, “as an atheist, there’s not much I believe in. Being a fan has inspired me to believe in people, and that there is some purpose to my life.” Fandom groups “have given me decades-long friendships that span the globe,” another said. Finally, comic-con culture is a sanctuary; it provides space for fans to be themselves, helps them cope with personal struggles, and inspires hope. This was a prominent theme. For example, one attendee from Philadelphia divulged mental health issues but explained how his involvement in board-game tournaments and the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons offered a safe space from anxiety: “I feel like when I’m doing these things, I can really be me. So, it’s more about letting myself be my true self and not feeling, or not caring, about the others around me that are judging me.” Given these findings, I believe that social scientists need to consider popular culture more seriously as a fundamental feature of society that people can make sacred in different ways.   17. If you read enough tech news on the internet, you're probably used to seeing the same advice over and over again: Update your software to the latest version as soon as possible. This advice is repeated often, because, for the most part, it's sound—updates not only give you access to the latest features, but also the most up to date stability and security patches. If you want to protect your software, hardware, and the data contained therein, update! Web browsers are no exception. It's particularly important to keep the tool you use to access the internet fully updated if you want to keep yourself safe as you surf the web. While you should update all web browsers whenever possible, it's especially pertinent for Firefox users to update right now. If you don't, your browser might stop working. A Firefox root certificate is expiringMozilla, the company that makes Firefox, issued a warning last year imploring users to update their browsers as soon as possible. Unlike most articles I write about browser updates, this particular update doesn't include a security patch designed to protect against a vulnerability or active exploit. Instead, this version of Firefox updates a "root certificate," which is necessary for the browser to continue operating as expected. A root certificate is essentially the confirmation that Mozilla approved and certified an add-on. (That's what Firefox calls browser extensions.) Whenever you install something like, say, uBlock Origin, Mozilla first has to ensure that add-on is authentic, as not doing so invites instability and security risks. This root certificate is set to expire on Friday, March 14. Without this root certificate, Mozilla cannot confirm that your add-ons are actually legit, and, as such, will disable them. But it won't just be your add-ons. The lack of a root certificate could also stop DRM-protected content from playing. That includes streaming service like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+, since their content is, of course, digital locked up via DRM. In addition, Mozilla says systems that use content verification could stop working as well. Firefox itself won't completely cease to function after this root certificate expires. You can keep using the outdated version of the browser, if you insist. However, your add-ons and streaming services will likely stop working, among other functions. Perhaps even more critically, you're setting yourself up for security issues: Without this certificate, malicious add-ons and websites could bypass Mozilla's security features and wreak havoc on your machine, while Mozilla's feature that gives you a heads up when your passwords are breached may not work. There's really no reason not to update Firefox to update the root certificate. How to update Firefox Luckily, this isn't a case where you need to make any significant lifestyle changes to adapt. In fact, this really is as simple as updating your browser. As long as you're running Firefox version 128 or newer, you're set. (For context, the Firefox app on my Mac, which I rarely use, was running version 125, when the latest as of this piece is 136.) If you're on a desktop, like Mac, Windows, or Linux, click Menu > Help > About Firefox. Firefox will look for the latest version, and, if found, will invite you to restart your browser to install it.   18. This post was written by Alison Green and published on Ask a Manager. Here are three updates from past letter-writers. 1. Does using humor risk undermining me as a manager? Thank you so much for responding to my question! In truth, I didn’t even consider the possibility that using too many self-deprecating jokes would alter my employee’s perception of me, I was mainly focused on the quantity of my jokes. After I submitted my question, I thought over my interactions with them, and came to the conclusion that I was being way too silly, that my nervousness was manifesting as non-stop joke after joke, which had a strong possibility to detract from maintaining a professional manager/employee relationship. Some of your commenters also noted that as my report they were a captive audience, in that even if they don’t find my humor funny they may feel compelled to laugh along, even if they feel uncomfortable. Armed with this realization, I cut way back on the jokes I made, and with your advice in mind also limited the self-deprecating humor as well. This seemed to work well over time, as I was able to build a friendly yet professional relationship with my employee, while also occasionally poking fun at our system software or the weather. Unfortunately it ultimately didn’t last; I had to terminate them for egregious misconduct towards another employee at a company event, which was fueled by alcohol. When I hire my next employee, I’ll be sure to use the lessons you and your readers shared to use humor moderately and with mindfulness towards how I may be perceived. 2. I want to apologize for snapping at my coworker, but my manager said not to (#2 at the link) I really appreciated your advice. I struggle with anxiety, and the idea that I’d upset someone was eating at me. Despite the consensus in the comments that my outburst wasn’t all that bad, I still felt an apology to my coworker was warranted, so I practiced what I was going to say based on your suggestions. When the time came, I was on high alert for signs of chilliness, but nothing in her behavior indicated that she was still upset. A few days later, she announced that she was leaving for a different job, and that’s the last time I saw her. Although anticlimactic, this event was illuminating for me. There was a lot of gossip in the weeks following my former coworker’s departure, through which I learned she quit in a huff after the manager tried to have a conversation with her about her chronic tardiness. Unbeknownst to me, she had a history of showing up late, disappearing for long stretches without explanation, and (oh, the horror!) taking other people’s food from the break room without asking. Several people expressed relief at not having to deal with her anymore, including the manager. Speaking of managers … you were spot on to call his response into question. I think he was right that texting an apology wouldn’t have had the outcome I wanted, but it’s become clear to me through this incident and others that the promises he makes and advice he gives should be taken with a grain of salt. It’s a bummer, because I like him as a person, but the more I learn about good management, the more aware I am of where he falls short (for example, his refusal to address years of complaints about my former coworker). On the bright side, I got a promotion and a raise, and am being encouraged to find projects that interest me. I know I don’t want to stay at this job longterm (aside from the management issues, there’s too much drama and a big nepo baby problem – a whole letter unto itself), but I’m learning a lot and building new skills, so I’m sticking around for now. Thank you again, both for your wisdom, and for the wonderful community you’ve brought together. 3. After I had to fire someone, my boss asked if I still want to be a manager (#2 at the link) As it turns out, the question from my boss was testing my desire to move up to a director role — a position that he knew was going to be vacant soon, but he wasn’t able to share that info with me at the time. (For various reasons, including a required relocation, it was not a role that interested me.) As I predicted, it took many months for a replacement for my employee to be hired, but the new employee is a terrific skills match and much more professional. Our team has been running very well since the new year and the lack of drama has been a relief to everyone. That said, I did recently accept a role that is a lateral move within the organization. I will have only one direct report in this new role, but it is a growth area and I expect my team will have more members in the next 12 months or so. I am very grateful to you and to the commenters who assured me that firing someone never feels good in the short term, but will help the team in the long term, and that was certainly true in this case.   19. Google has released the March 2025 core update today, Google said this core update “rollout may take up to 2 weeks to complete.” Core updates happen multiple times per year. Core updates can have significant, broad changes to Google’s search algorithms and systems, which is why Google announces them. This is the first core update of the 2025 year. This core update happened a few months since the last core update, the December 2024 core update. What to do if you are hit. Google has given advice on what to consider if you are negatively impacted by a core update in the past. Google has not really given much new advice here but here is the past advice the company provided: There aren’t specific actions to take to recover. A negative rankings impact may not signal anything is wrong with your pages. Google has offered a list of questions to consider if your site is hit by a core update. Google said you can see a bit of a recovery between core updates but the biggest change would be after another core update. In short, write helpful content for people and not to rank in search engines. “There’s nothing new or special that creators need to do for this update as long as they’ve been making satisfying content meant for people. For those that might not be ranking as well, we strongly encourage reading our creating helpful, reliable, people-first content help page,” Google said previously.   23. Google is announcing a slew of new Gemini features today, this time aimed squarely at its free users. Features that were previously only available with the $20 per month Advanced plan will now be accessible to the public. GemsGems are Gemini's little AI helpers that you can create for any task. You can start with pre-made ones like Google's Career guide. But you can create a Gem for any purpose. You can create one for repeated tasks, or to help you research a topic with very specific prompts. Previously, the Gems feature was exclusive to Gemini Advanced users, but now Google is making them to available to all users. You'll find Gems in the sidebar, where you can easily get started with premade Gems. Deep ResearchGoogle, too, has a Deep Research feature. But unlike with Perplexity, it was previously behind a paywall. Now, Google is making its Deep Research feature available for free to all users. Deep Research is an AI feature where the AI model takes some time to think through your question using a reasoning model, and then goes out in the open web, collating sources, figuring issues out in depth, and then presenting you with a detailed report instead of the simple bullet-point answers that regular AI chatbots provide. In addition to making Deep Research free, Google is also adding its Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental model to Deep Research. The new thinking model will help with the every step of research, including planning, reasoning, analyzing, and reporting. Deep Research will be available in more than 45 languages, and can be accessed using the drop-down menu in the Prompt box. In material shared with press, Google wasn't clear how many Deep Research queries free users get per day, though the company did promise expanded access for Gemini Advanced users. Updates to the Gemini 2.0 Flash modelThe Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking (Experimental) model is also getting an upgrade. You can now upload files for it to use while answering prompts, and Google says it has improved the model's performance and introduced advanced reasoning capabilities. Gemini Advanced users will also now have access to a 1 million token context window, enabling users to solve more complex problems. Your Google Search history comes to GeminiGoogle is adding a new experimental feature called Gemini with personalization, powered by the Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking model. This allows Gemini to connect with your Google apps and services. The company is starting with Google Search, but will expand to Photos and YouTube in coming months. This means that Gemini will have more context about you, based on your Google Searches, but only if you choose to enable the Personalization (experimental) model from the model picker drop-down menu. Google also says that the new feature will only use your search history when Gemini's advanced models deem that it's needed. More powerful connections with Google appsWith the 2.0 Flash Thinking model, Gemini is now better able to tackle complex requests that involve multiple Google services, including Calendar, Notes, Tasks, and now Photos. What’s new. The new experimental feature tests asset impact within a single PMax campaign: A control group (feed-only) is compared against a treatment group (with added assets). The results are viewable in the Experiment report. Split testing without duplicate campaigns. Unlike traditional A/B testing that requires running parallel campaigns, this new feature splits traffic within a single Performance Max campaign: Control group: Shows product feed-only ads. Treatment group: Shows product feed plus additional creative assets. This approach eliminates the need to manage duplicate campaigns while providing clear performance comparisons. How it works. The experiment divides traffic between the two variations, allowing you to determine whether adding creative assets (like images, videos, and text) improves performance beyond what the product feed alone can deliver. You can review results in the dedicated Experiment report section, measuring key metrics like conversions, click-through rates, and return on ad spend between the two groups. Why we care. Performance Max campaigns have become central to Google’s advertising ecosystem, particularly for retailers. However, many advertisers struggle to understand how much value their creative assets add beyond automated feed-based ads. This experiment feature addresses that uncertainty, giving retailers data-driven insights into whether investing in additional creative assets delivers meaningful performance improvements. Go deeper.
