Your phone comes with a notes app out of the box, and its app store is full of alternatives if you're looking for any number of features or advantages. But, often, the best way to keep track of thoughts, photos, or anything else, is by texting yourself. If you don't normally text yourself, this might sound a bit odd. Why would you text yourself? I'll get into that soon. But first, let's discuss the latest app to do self-messaging right: Google Messages. Text yourself with RCS using Google MessagesAs reported by Android Authority, Google Messages' latest beta now offers users the option to text themselves via RCS. According to Redditor seeareeff, the feature is also running in the stable version of the app. Google Messages already lets you text yourself, but only through SMS. That might not sound like a big change, but it is. SMS is inferior to RCS in almost every way—which you might expect from a messaging protocol invented in 1992. By opening this feature up to RCS, Google Messages now lets you send yourself longer messages, as well as high-quality photos and videos. SMS made it impossible to quickly preserve media with Google Messages, since it would compress images and videos (especially videos). Lifting those limitations means Google Messages users can enjoy a perk that other users have been enjoying on other platforms for years. The biggest downside, however, is that RCS messages to yourself still aren't encrypted—at least, according to Android Authority. That's usually a big perk of RCS over SMS, and why security experts recommend messaging using the former rather than the latter. That lack of encryption isn't a huge deal, especially if you're using the service to reference innocuous thoughts and media, but it's good to keep in mind. You probably shouldn't text yourself anything particularly private or sensitive over Google Messages. How to text yourself with RCS in Google MessagesIf the feature is already live on your end, you won't have to do anything differently. Just text yourself! You should see the message come through as RCS, rather than SMS. If not, however, you may need to sign up for the Google Messages beta to try this out early. You can go to the Google Messages Play Store page, tap Become a tester, then follow the on-screen instructions to enroll in the beta. Why text yourself?Google Messages joins a collection of apps that makes it easy to message yourself with good results. That includes iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Facebook Messenger—really, any messaging platform that allows for unlimited messages with high quality media. For many, the best part about texting yourself is simply the convenience. You probably spend a significant portion of the time on your phone within one of these messaging apps, which means it's easy to switch from one conversation to your own private chat with yourself. If someone brings something up in one of your conversations you want to save for later, you can quickly text it to yourself. It's also a great way to sync messages and media across devices. If you have access to the messaging app on your phone, tablet, or even computer, you can access these thoughts and items from any of your devices. All of those individual messages are timestamped too, so you know exactly when each was sent. That's something I wish Apple's Notes app would do: While you can see when a note was both created and last edited, you can't see a history of what was added when. If you text yourself, you can see exactly when each and every message was generated. The lack of end-to-end encryption really is a bummer, though. If you like the idea of texting yourself, but want to make sure your notes and media are protected, you might want to think about using an encrypted platform, like Signal, for the task.   10. I recently helped my mom sort through boxes she inherited when my grandparents passed away. One box was labeled – either ironically or genuinely – “toothpick holders and other treasures.” Inside were many keepsakes from moments now lost to history – although we found no toothpick holders. My favorite of the items we sorted through was a solitary puzzle piece, an artifact reflecting my late grandmother’s penchant for hiding the final piece to a jigsaw puzzle just to swoop in at the last moment and finish it. After several hours of reminiscing, my mom and I threw away 90% of what we had sorted. “Why did I keep this?” is a question I hear frequently, both from my family and friends and from patients. I am a licensed clinical psychologist whose research focuses on the characterization, assessment and treatment of hoarding disorder, particularly for adults 60 years of age or older. As such, I spend a great deal of my time thinking about this question. What drives the need to keep stuff? Hoarding disorder is a psychiatric condition defined by urges to save items and difficulty discarding current possessions. For adults with “clinically severe” hoarding disorder, this leads to a level of household clutter that impairs daily functioning and can even create a fire hazard. In my professional experience, however, many adults struggle with clutter even if they do not meet the clinical criteria for hoarding disorder. Holding on to things that have sentimental value or could be useful in the future is a natural part of growing older. For some people, though, this tendency to hold on to objects grows over time, to the point that they eventually do meet criteria for hoarding disorder. Age-related changes in executive function may help explain the increase in prevalence of hoarding disorder as we get older; increasing difficulty with decision-making in general also affects decisions around household clutter. The traditional model behind hoarding disorder suggests that difficulty with discarding comes from distress during decision-making. However, my research shows that this may be less true of older adults. When I was a graduate student, I conducted a study in which we asked adults with hoarding disorder to spend 15 minutes making decisions about whether to keep or discard various items brought from their home. Participants could sort whatever items they wanted. Most chose to sort paper items such as old mail, cards or notes. We found that age was associated with lower levels of distress during the task, such that participants who were older tended to feel less stressed when making the decision about what to keep and what to discard. We also found that many participants, particularly those who were older, actually reported positive emotions while sorting their items. In new research publishing soon, my current team replicated this finding using a home-based version of the task. This suggests that fear of making the wrong decision isn’t a universal driver of our urge to save items. In fact, a study my team published in August 2024 with adults over 50 with hoarding disorder suggests that altruism, a personality trait of wanting to help others, may explain why some people keep items that others might discard. My colleagues and I compared our participants’ personality profiles with that of adults in the general population of the same gender and age group. Compared with the general population, participants with hoarding disorder scored almost universally high on altruism. Altruism also comes up frequently in my clinical work with older adults who struggle with clutter. People in our studies often tell me that they have held onto something out of a sense of responsibility, either for the item itself or to the environment. “I need it to go to a good home” and “my grandmother gave this to me” are sentiments we commonly hear. Thus, people may keep things not out of fear of losing them but because saving them is consistent with their values. Leaning into values In a 2024 study, my team demonstrated that taking a values-based approach to decluttering helps older adults to decrease household clutter and increases their positive affect, a state of mind characterized by feelings such as joy and contentment. Clinicians visited the homes of older adults with hoarding disorder for one hour per week for six weeks. At each visit, the clinicians used a technique called motivational interviewing to help participants talk through their decisions while they sorted household clutter. We found that having participants start with identifying their values allowed them to maintain focus on their long-term goals. Too often, people focus on the immediate ability of an object to “spark joy” and forget to consider whether an object has greater meaning and purpose. Values are the abstract beliefs that we humans use to create our goals. Values are whatever drives us and can include family, faith or frivolity. Because values are subjective, what people identify as important to keep is also subjective. For example, the dress I wore to my sister’s wedding reminded me of a wonderful day. However, when it no longer fit I gave it away because doing so was more consistent with my values of utility and helpfulness: I wanted the dress to go to someone who needed it and would use it. Someone who more strongly valued family and beauty might have prioritized keeping the dress because of the aesthetics and its link to a family event. Additionally, we found that instead of challenging the reasons a person might have for keeping an item, it is helpful to instead focus on eliciting their reasons for discarding it and the goals they have for their home and their life. Tips for sweeping away the old My research on using motivational interviewing for decluttering and my observations from a current clinical trial on the approach point to some practical steps people can take to declutter their home. Although my work has been primarily with older adults, these tips should be helpful for people of all ages. Start with writing out your values. Every object in your home should feel value-consistent for you. For example, if tradition and faith are important values for you, you might be more inclined to hold onto a cookbook that was made by the elders at your church and more able to let go of a cookbook you picked up on a whim at a bookstore. If, instead, health and creativity are your core values, it might be more important to hold onto a cookbook of novel ways to sneak more vegetables into your diet. Defining value-consistent goals for using your space can help to maintain motivation as you declutter. Are you clearing off your desk so you can work more efficiently? Making space on kitchen counters to bake cookies with your grandchildren? Remember that sometimes your values will conflict. At those moments, it may help to reflect on whether keeping or discarding an object will bring you closer to your goals for the space. Similarly, remember that values are subjective. If you are helping a loved one declutter, maintain a curious, nonjudgmental attitude.   11. Do artists and scientists see the same thing in the shape of trees? As a scientist who studies branching patterns in living things, I’m starting to think so. Piet Mondrian was an early 20th-century abstract artist and art theorist obsessed with simplicity and essence of form. Even people who have never heard of Mondrian will likely recognize his iconic irregular grids of rectangles. Tableau I by Piet Mondrian, 1921. [Image: Kunstmuseum Den Haag] When I saw Mondrian’s 1911 “Gray Tree,” I immediately recognized something about trees that I had struggled to describe. By removing all but the most essential elements in an abstract painting, Mondrian demonstrated something I was attempting to explain using physics and fractal geometry. My field of research is mathematical biology. My colleagues and I try to explain how treelike structures such as veins and arteries, lungs and leaves fine-tune their physical form to efficiently deliver blood, air, water and nutrients. [Image: Kunstmuseum Den Haag] Fundamental research in the biology of branching helps cure cardiovascular diseases and cancer, design materials that can heal themselves and predict how trees will respond to a changing climate. Branching also shows up in ant foraging patterns, slime molds and cities. The treeless tree From 1890 to 1912, Mondrian painted dozens of trees. He started with full-color, realistic trees in context: trees in a farmyard or a dappled lane. Gradually he removed leaves, depth, color and eventually even branching from his tree paintings. “Gray Tree” uses only curved lines of various thickness superimposed on top of one another at seemingly random angles. The science of trees may offer some clues. The science of branching One goal of mathematical biology is to synthesize what scientists know about the vast diversity of living systems – where there seems to be an exception to every rule – into clear, general principles, ideally with few exceptions. One such general principle is that evolution fine-tunes treelike structures in living things to make metabolism and respiration as efficient as possible. The body carefully controls the thickness of vessels as they branch, because deviation from the most efficient diameter wastes energy and causes disease, such as atherosclerosis. In many cases, such as human blood vessels, the body exerts much tighter control over diameter than length. So while veins and arteries might take circuitous routes to accommodate the vagaries of organs and anatomy, their diameter usually stays within 10% of the optimum. The same principle appears in tree branches as well. The precise calibration of branch diameter leads to a hallmark of fractal shapes called scale invariance. A scale invariance is a property that holds true regardless of the size of an object or part of an object you’re looking at. Scale invariance occurs in trees because trunks, limbs and twigs all branch in similar ways and for similar reasons. Trees with different values of the scaling parameter α. [Image: Gao and Newberry/PNAS Nexus] The scale invariance in branch diameter dictates how much smaller a limb should be as it branches and how much investment a tree makes in a few thick branches versus many thin ones. Trees have evolved scale invariance to transport water, reach light and resist gravity and wind load as efficiently as possible given physical limits. This science of trees inspired my colleague and me to measure the scaling of tree branch diameter in art. The art of trees Among my favorite images is a carving of a tree from a late-medieval mosque in India. Its exaltation of trees reminds me of Tolkien’s Tree of Gondor and the human capacity to appreciate the simple beauty of living things. [Photo: Snehrashmi/Wiki Commons] But I also find mathematical inspiration in the Islamic Golden Age, a time when art, architecture, math and physics thrived. Medieval Islamic architects even decorated buildings with infinitely nonrepeating tiling patterns that were not understood by Western mathematics until the 20th century. The stylized tree carvings of the Sidi Saiyyed mosque also follow the precise system of proportions dictated by the scale invariance of real trees. This level of precision of branch diameter takes an attentive eye and a careful plan – much better than I could freehand. Cherry Blossoms by Matsumura Goshun (1752–1811). [Image: Metropolitan Museum of Art] Indeed, wherever our team looked at trees in great artwork, such as Klimt’s “Tree of Life” or Matsumura Goshun’s “Cherry Blossoms,” we also found precise scale invariance in the diameter of branches. “Grey Tree” also realistically captures the natural variation in branch diameters, even when the painting gives the viewer little else to go on. Without realistic scaling, would this painting even be a tree? As if to prove the point, Mondrian made a subsequent painting the following year, also with a gray background, curved lines and the same overall composition and dimensions. Even the position of some of the lines are the same. But, in “Blooming Apple Tree” (1912), all the lines are the same thickness. The scaling is gone, and with it, the tree. Before reading the title, most viewers would not guess that this is a painting of a tree. Yet Mondrian’s sketches reveal that “Blooming Apple Tree” and “Gray Tree” are the very same tree. [Image: Kunstmuseum Den Haag] The two paintings contain few elements that might signal a tree – a concentration of lines near the center, lines that could be branches or a central trunk and lines that could indicate the ground or a horizon. Yet only “Gray Tree” has scale-invariant branch diameters. When Mondrian removes the scale invariance in “Blooming Apple Tree,” viewers just as easily see fish, scales, dancers, water or simply nonrepresentational shapes, whereas the tree in “Gray Tree” is unmistakable. Photo synthesis Mondrian’s tree paintings and scientific theory highlight the importance of the thickness of tree branches. Consilience is when different lines of evidence and reasoning reach the same conclusions. Art and math both explore abstract descriptions of the world, and so seeing great art and science pick out the same essential features of trees is satisfying beyond what art or science could accomplish alone. Just as great literature such as “The Overstory” and “The Botany of Desire” show us how trees influence our lives in ways we often don’t notice, the art and science of trees show how humans are finely attuned to what’s important to trees. I think this resonance is one reason people find fractals and natural landscapes so pleasing and reassuring. All these lines of thinking give us new ways to appreciate trees. The German antitrust authority has charged Apple with abusing its market power through its app tracking tool and giving itself preferential treatment in a move that could result in daily fines for the iPhone maker if it fails to change its business practices. The move follows a three-year investigation by the Federal Cartel Office into Apple’s App Tracking Transparency feature, which allows users to block advertisers from tracking them across different applications. The U.S. tech giant has said the feature allows users to control their privacy but has drawn criticism from Meta Platforms, app developers and startups whose business models rely on advertising tracking. “The ATTF (app tracking tool) makes it far more difficult for competing app publishers to access the user data relevant for advertising,” Andreas Mundt, cartel office president, said in a statement. Apple defended the feature in an emailed statement to Reuters, adding that it “holds itself to a higher standard than it requires of any third-party developer.” “We … will continue to constructively engage with the Federal Cartel Office to ensure users continue to have transparency and control over their data,” it added. Apple will be required to address the concerns set out in the German charge sheet or risk further proceedings and daily fines if it fails to do so by the time of a final ruling which could come this year but is more likely to land next year. The case was triggered by complaints from associations representing publishers, broadcasters, advertisers, their agencies and ad tech firms. “Today’s charges are groundbreaking. Apple’s measures had created an artificial opacity in its ecosystem that led to less choice, higher costs for apps, and less protection against ad fraud, all while boosting Apple’s revenues from services,” said Thomas Höppner, partner at law firm Hausfeld, which represents the complainants. “For the first time it has been clarified that Apple may not rely on pretextual privacy arguments to massively restrict competition in its favor,” he said.   13. Like many people, I had a retail job in college. What it failed to deliver in financial rewards, it made up for by teaching me life skills. I learned how to stay calm when someone was being loud and wrong, how to negotiate, and how to manage my time. Other learned skills weren't as obvious. For instance, I didn't realize, whenever I worked a closing shift, that I was learning to manage my own home. At least, that's what CleanTok influencers would have me believe with this latest cleaning trend. It's called "closing shift cleaning" and you may have seen it on TikTok or Reels. What is "closing shift cleaning"? Closing shift cleaning is what it sounds like, as long as you know what a closing shift is all about: You tidy up at night and get everything ready for the openers. In this case, you're not only the closer, but the opener. If you ever had to work a "clopen" shift, you might recall that you put more effort into closing to make opening up easier for yourself in the morning. This is like that, but for your home. If you've ever closed up a cafe, you know you need to make sure the food is prepped for the next morning. If you've ever closed up a mall store, you know you need to make sure the displays are in order. You need to count the cash in the till, throw out the trash, and turn off all the machines. The idea is to get all that done so the opener can focus on the actual opening tasks, like getting the muffins in the oven or coordinating a drop-off with the restock agent. When you do a "closing shift" at home, you're thinking about what you'll need the next morning and getting it ready. If you know you'll need coffee, make sure the machine is clean and you have a fresh mug available. If you have to go to the office, make sure your clothes are steamed and laid out. Take out the trash, put away any clutter that accumulated during the day, and generally get your home ready to "open" in the morning. Why does closing shift cleaning work?Thinking of your home as a business isn't a new concept in the decluttering space. In the past, I've recommended a technique that involves storing extra products in a "backstock" area, like you would in a store. Treating your home as a business allows you to be more methodical and objective, and removes a much of the hesitation or decision paralysis. As is true in any business, you want to start your day off with no bumps or missteps; you want everything to go according to plan. Preparing the night before by tidying up your kitchen, assembling everything you'll need in the morning, and "closing down" the house gives you a head start on the day. Not only does it make the next day better before it even begins, but it gives you a sense of accomplishment as you head to bed. To make this work, spend a few days taking note of what holds you up in the morning, whether it's digging your rain boots out from the back of the hall closet or tripping over the folded clothes you haven't yet put away. What, if eliminated or dealt with, would make your morning better? Take note, too, of what weighs on you when you go to sleep, like dishes left in the sink or trash you didn't take out. Unlike traditional video-sharing platforms, WikiTok offers users a refreshing respite from the relentless algorithms that dominate our digital landscape. The web app delivers an article at random, with an engaging image filling the display. If something interests you, you can tap "Read More," and then the full Wikipedia article will pop up in another window. If it doesn't catch your fancy, you scroll up, and another article will randomly appear. I couldn't stop scrolling, not because WikiTok gave me what I wanted, but because its content was intriguing. Over the next hour, I read about the Samsung Continuum Android phone, learned that Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce will also get Super Bowl rings, and viewed an architectural marvel in Denmark resembling the fjords that dot the country's landscape. The lack of rhyme and reason to WikiTok feeds is intentional, and developer Issac Gemal told Ars Technica that he has no plans to change that anytime soon: "I had to put my foot down and say something along the lines that we're already ruled by ruthless, opaque algorithms in our everyday life; why can't we just have one little corner in the world without them?"   20. There’s a focus on protecting our personal data now, perhaps more so than ever before, be it from foreign powers, Big Tech, or Elon Musk’s DOGE. Consumers are wary about where their data is going, what it’s being used for, and how, or if, they can put up safeguards, especially while using tech tools like search engines or AI assistants. With several AI tools and assistants hitting the market over the past couple of years—Microsoft’s Copilot and Meta’s Llama, among many others—much of our data, queries, and summaries are being fed to large tech companies, used to train their artificial intelligence models. While some users may not mind, it could turn others off, which is why one company is trying a different approach. PIN AI, a Bay Area-based AI startup, is rolling out what it calls the “personal AI network” with the launch of a mobile application this week, complete with a native large language model (LLM) that is designed to become a “personalized intelligence network,” or “PIN.” In a nutshell, PIN AI’s app and LLM “live” on a user’s smartphone, accessing the personal data via other apps and platforms that only the user authorizes, and then provide specific and tailored insights or answers based on that information. It’s similar, in some ways, to Apple Intelligence. That’s important, say PIN AI’s founders, because AI tools are the next great online frontier, even if they’re not ubiquitous quite yet. “These AI products are becoming the universal interface to access online services,” says Davide Crapis, one of the company’s cofounders, along with Bill Sun and Ben Wu. “It’s becoming the new way that we access the internet.” Getting personal Personalization is going to be incredibly important going forward—not only to protect users’ data and information but also to provide relevant information. For example, suppose a user allows PIN AI to connect to their Gmail account, social media accounts, banking information and payment apps, text messages, and internet browsing data. Tapping into all of that information, PIN AI will be able to deliver personalized, in-depth answers or responses, unlike any or most other AI tools on the market. Crapis, Sun, and Wu, collectively, have been working on AI technology for many years, and say that it may sound complicated but that users will quickly realize it’s a fairly simple product. “There’s an LLM packed with the app,” says Sun, “so you get a personalized AI.” As an example of how “personal” the AI tool can get, Sun tells Fast Company that a hypothetical user could simply bark a voice command at the app such as, “order my mom a birthday present.” From there, PIN AI would sift through past communications and other information, discerning what the user’s mom might want, where to get it, and at the best price. It can also place the order and have it delivered—with no additional effort from the user, other than the initial voice command. It’s all about sovereignty Another example: If a user were to ask PIN AI a more complicated question, such as, “can I afford to buy a new car,” the tool could likewise analyze the user’s bank accounts, figure out what types of vehicles the user may want or need (incorporating family needs, etc.), their favorite color or other potential specifications, financing needs, and deliver up an answer of either yes or no, along with a list of potential buying options from nearby dealerships. While it’s all pretty powerful, users may rightfully be wary about giving an app and AI tool so much access to their information. That’s another thing the PIN AI team says they’re focusing on: encryption and security. The tool is built on blockchain protocols and users’ data and information are encrypted, so if a user loses their phone with PIN AI installed, a bad actor still shouldn’t be able to access it. Resonating with early users After rolling out a trial app, Sun says that it has attracted around 2 million users, almost exclusively through word of mouth, as well as an active community on platforms like Discord. In terms of monetization, the company plans to drive revenue by charging the various agents from different apps and platforms that will interact on the model a per-use fee—so users themselves don’t pay anything. The monetization takes place within an agentic AI marketplace, and those agents will fork over a slice of applicable commission fees. And it’s also gotten the attention of investors. The company is backed by a16z Crypto (CSX), Hack VC, and Sequoia Capital U.S. Scout. So far, PIN AI has raised more than $10 million, according to data from PitchBook. A Texas county on Wednesday approved holding an election sought by SpaceX that would let residents living around billionaire Elon Musk’s company decide whether to formally create a new city called Starbase. The election was set for May 3 and votes can only be cast by residents living near the launch site that is currently part of an unincorporated area of Cameron County, located along the U.S.-Mexico border. In December, more than 70 area residents signed a petition requesting an election to make Starbase its own municipality. Most of the residents are company employees and the community includes more than 100 children, according to copies of the petition obtained by The Associated Press. Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño said the county reviewed the petition and found it met the state’s requirements for the incorporation process to move forward. “If the election passes, this will be the newest town in Cameron County since Los Indios in 1995,” Treviño said in a statement. “We look forward to seeing the outcome of this election.” SpaceX responded to a request for comment by referring to the company’s earlier statement in December. Kathryn Lueders, Starbase’s general manager, previously said that the incorporation would streamline certain processes to build amenities in the area. Some local environmental advocates have expressed worry about what the effects would mean for development. SpaceX’s launch site broke ground in Texas in 2014. Only 10 of the roughly 250 lots of land within the proposed new city limits do not belong to the company. More than 3,400 full-time SpaceX employees and contractors work at the Starbase site, according to a local impact study issued by the county last year. Musk has long been planting business roots in Texas and has spread them far and wide across the Lone Star State. The billionaire moved to Texas in 2020 and relocated to or expanded a number of his companies in the state, citing the state’s business-friendly climate.   22. Sprint interval training, or SIT, is super trendy right now. It’s a great way to improve your running speed and to get in a hard interval workout, and I’ll explain exactly how. But I also need to clear up this silly question about whether it’s “better than” HIIT (or high-intensity interval training). SIT is, in fact, a type of HIIT. What is SIT? Sprint interval training refers to exercise routines where you run as hard as you possibly can (or nearly as hard) for a short time, typically 30 seconds. A SIT workout usually looks something like this: Warm up with walking and/or easy jogging for 10 to 15 minutes. Run 30 seconds as hard as you can. Recover (walk or rest) for three to five minutes. Repeat the above steps anywhere from four to 10 times. Cool down with more walking or easy jogging—for, say, five to 10 minutes. The benefits of SIT include improved running economy (basically, your body gets more efficient at the running motion) and improved time in running races. SIT has not been found to increase your VO2max any better than steady-state training, or any better than HIIT. For example, this study found no significant difference in VO2max between SIT training and a control group that did steady state training (both improved), but it did find that the SIT group was better at sprinting. Not surprising, when you think about it. Here is some data from a recent SIT workout I did. I wanted to get in five miles for the day, so I warmed up for 15 minutes and cooled down for about the same, and in between I did 10 intervals of 30 seconds each, with three minutes’ recovery. (I thought about doing four minutes, but I only had about an hour to get that workout in, so I opted to be a bit more efficient.) The sprints were hard, but the recovery gave me plenty of time to feel ready to go again. Credit: Beth Skwarecki What is HIIT? As I’ve written (or, to be honest, ranted) before, HIIT started as a catch-all term for hard interval workouts, and has mutated into a marketing buzzword that signifies the general idea of hard work in a short timeframe. HIIT stands for high intensity interval training, and it includes all kinds of different interval schemes. Here are some of the “classic” HIIT workouts from the scientific literature: Wingate sprints: 30 seconds all-out, followed by 4ish minutes of rest, repeated several times. (These were originally done on a research-grade exercise bike.) Tabatas: Four minutes of 20-second all out sprints, with just 10 seconds between each one. These, too, were originally done on a bike, and you do the whole block once, not multiple times. 60/60: One minute hard, one minute easy, then repeat Scientific articles that review the results of HIIT tend to have trouble coming up with a definition, since the term has been used so many different ways. This study has a table with examples, including the ones above, plus basketball players’ shuttle runs and swimmers’ 50-meter intervals. This one defined HIIT as anything where the work intervals were four minutes’ duration or less. Did you notice something? Those Wingate intervals? Yep, that’s the same type of workout people are now calling SIT. SIT is a type of HIIT. Is SIT or HIIT better for fat loss? Neither is better. SIT is a type of HIIT, anyway. If you want to change your body composition, the exact type of exercise doesn’t matter much, as long as you are doing some kind of strength training to preserve or build muscle. The difference between your calorie intake and your calorie burn is what determines how much fat you lose. It doesn’t really matter how you burn your calories. The term “SIT” is being misused on social mediaSIT should be a little easier to understand than HIIT, since it’s one specific family of workouts. But as I browsed TikTok and other social media, I found people using SIT to refer to non-SIT protocols like 20 seconds work, 10 seconds rest, for five rounds. That’s not SIT at all. I also found a “SIT” workout that involved 20 seconds of kettlebell swings, 20 seconds of thrusters, and 30 seconds of burpees. That’s not even sprinting! Take all these social media workouts with a grain of salt, especially when they make big promises about weight loss or muscle gain.   23. In 2023, creator and social agency Whalar Group announced an ambitious plan to create physical campuses for content creators to learn, make, and collaborate with their peers. Now the company is opening the doors to its first campus in Venice, Calif. this month with an additional location in Brooklyn launching this spring and a London location slated for 2026. Part production studio, part co-working space, part university, The Lighthouse is membership-based community designed to help creators and their teams level-up both their content and the businesses they’re building around it. “If you look at [20th century German art school] Bauhaus, Andy Warhol’s Factory, Silicon Valley, all those moments where you had a gathering space for smart, curious, multi-hyphenate[s] created a generational shift for creative industries,” says Jon Goss, president of The Lighthouse. “That’s our goal: to be a place where people can find connection, find opportunities to collaborate, learn from experts and thought leaders, and learn from each other. And I think that enables the creator economy to go into its next chapter.” The Lighthouse’s founding cohort in Venice includes 150 creators and creative professionals who will use the facilities for filming, editing, podcasting, screening, performing, and more on top of having access to educational classes and sessions covering topics including business management, how to staff a team, production workshops, wellbeing and personal growth, and more. Memberships will typically run for up to four years and those who have contributed to The Lighthouse by way of education, community building, and programming will have the option to remain members who can mentor the next generation of creators and creatives. [Photo: Yoshihiro Makino] For as long as the creator economy has been around (since 1997, by some suggestions) and for all the money pouring into it (estimates place its total addressable market reaching half-a-trillion by 2027), it’s still somewhat of the Wild West. Various platforms and agencies have sprouted up in droves to help creators monetize their content, sell products, and score brand deals. But what’s often missing is a cohesive path toward professionalizing a creator business, particularly for the middle class of the creator economy. According to Influencer Marketing Hub, more than 50 million people worldwide consider themselves to be creators—but only 2 million would say they’re “professionals,” i.e. earning enough for it to be their full-time career. Granted, some creators will always keep what they do as a side hustle. But for those looking for a more solid foundation to scale up their businesses—or even establish one in the first place—Goss sees The Lighthouse as a viable resource. “The creator economy is being taken more seriously every year,” Goss says. “It just feels like centers of gravities going towards creators and the creator economy. I think more and more brands and media platforms and entertainment organizations are recognizing that every single day. It’s just inevitable.” [Photo: Yoshihiro Makino] “So our mission is to be an ecosystem for all those constituents,” he adds, “having those people all in the room together, actually having those conversations in real-time versus them happening in their echo chambers.” Part of bringing the gap among those constituents are The Lighthouse’s founding brand partners Shopify, iHeartMedia, and Samsung providing programming and activations throughout the campus. Shopify will have a pop-up for creator brands to showcase their products. iHeartMedia will host a monthly live podcast onsite featuring emerging talent. And Samsung is outfitting the space with TVs and products. Whalar Group also struck a broader partnership with Tribeca Festival to have a vertical within Tribeca dedicated to the intersection of Hollywood and creators. That vertical will also translate into a year-round talk series at the Lighthouse Venice and Brooklyn. The Lighthouse’s cohorts are selected by a council of their peers. And Goss says they took a similar approach of careful curation with which brands and organizations they chose to partner with. “They’re directly relevant to creators, to the creator economy, to the ability for creators to up-level and have a connection to them,” Goss says. “Brands are still a massive part of creators both in terms of the content they can create and the ability to generate revenue.” To be sure, The Lighthouse isn’t necessarily a novel concept. In 2012, YouTube launched Spaces which eventually shifted to a virtual and pop-up event model after the the company shuttered its physical locations post-pandemic. He also sees The Lighthouse succeeding by remaining as dynamic as the creator economy itself. “This has to be a place of constant evolution,” Goss says. “When we talk about what will this place become, what will it mean for creators, not knowing the endless possibilities that can come is the exciting bit.   24. For years, I thought saying yes was the key to success. Yes, to my parents’ dream of me becoming a doctor. Yes, to the long hours in medical school. Yes, to a career that others admired, even as I felt a growing sense of unease. I loved medicine’s ability to make a difference in people’s lives, but deep down, I had questions: Did I truly want to be a doctor, or was I fulfilling the role others expected of me? Every yes felt like another step away from myself. One pivotal moment came while I was working in a hospital in the Cook Islands. I treated patients with heart failure so advanced that basic mobility was a struggle. What struck me most wasn’t the lack of resources; it was the sense of familiarity. Even in the U.K.’s world-class healthcare system, I had seen patients left behind—ignored, dismissed, or underserved. These moments clarified what I valued most: fairness, justice, and confronting systemic inequality. When I returned to work as a junior doctor in Edinburgh, it became clear that the questions driving me weren’t about treating symptoms—they were about the systems perpetuating inequity. I eventually said no to medicine, not because I didn’t care, but because I cared deeply. Saying no isn’t rejection—it’s redirection. It’s about aligning your time and energy with your values and goals. But in practice, saying no can be daunting—especially in professional environments where compliance often feels safer than resistance. I have learned, however, that the ability to say no is a skill. Turn down projects that stretch you too thin Leaders and professionals often overcommit, risking burnout and lower-quality work. A former student of mine, a project manager, learned this the hard way. After saying yes to an unrealistic timeline, the team missed deadlines, and relationships suffered. The next time a client proposed an impossible deadline, she said, “To meet your goals, we’d need more time to maintain quality. Can we extend the timeline or adjust deliverables?” The result? The client agreed, and the team delivered excellent work, strengthening trust. Set boundaries without alienating others A marketing executive I know faced constant interruptions from colleagues seeking her input. Instead of shutting them down, she framed her no around her priorities: “I want to give you my full attention, but I’m focused on completing this project right now. Can we schedule a time to discuss this later?” By acknowledging their needs while protecting her time, she maintained strong relationships without compromising her priorities. Say ‘no’ to preserve long-term vision Patagonia’s decision to say no to the fast-fashion model is a famous example. By focusing on sustainability and durability, the company aligned its business practices with its values. This defiant stance reshaped the outdoor apparel industry and built a loyal customer base. One reason saying no feels so difficult is the fear of resistance or misunderstanding. People may question your decision or even push back. That’s why preparation matters. Before entering these conversations, get clear on your reasons and rehearse how you’ll articulate them. If you’re declining a promotion, for example, you could say, “I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity, but I’ve reflected on my priorities and realized this role doesn’t align with the path I see for myself. I’d love to contribute in ways that better match my strengths and long-term goals.” Clarity and confidence can help diffuse resistance and ensure your no is respected. Saying no isn’t about being contrarian or uncooperative. It’s about alignment—with yourself, your values, and the future you want to create. Even at the highest levels of leadership, the importance of focus and clarity is critical. In a recent strategy meeting, Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized the company’s biggest priority for 2025: simplifying work and scaling key initiatives like their AI-powered Gemini app. He urged employees to “internalize the urgency of this moment” and to prioritize focus by saying no to distractions. This kind of intentional decision-making isn’t just about efficiency—it’s about achieving excellence by staying aligned with core goals. When saying no: Reframe no as alignment, not rejection. A well-chosen no isn’t about shutting down an opportunity—it’s about making space for the right ones. Be transparent and tie your no to shared goals or values. When people understand your reasoning, they are more likely to respect your decision. Remember that no isn’t the end—it’s the beginning of a better path. The discomfort of saying no is temporary, but its impact can last for years. Looking back, I see that saying no to medicine wasn’t about closing a door—it was about opening the right one. That decision made room for a career aligned with my values, one where I could research, teach, and advocate for systemic change. No isn’t the end. It’s the beginning of a path to greater alignment, purpose, and impact. Whether it’s a career decision, a project at work, or a personal boundary, learning to say no with clarity and intention is one of the most productive skills you can develop. Dutch Bros Inc. shares surged more than 27% in premarket trading Thursday after the coffee chain posted better-than-expected fourth-quarter results and announced plans to expand mobile ordering and food offerings. Revenue rose 34.9% to $342.8 million, surpassing Wall Street estimates. Same-store sales grew 6.9%, and adjusted earnings per share reached 7 cents, both exceeding expectations. The company forecasts 2024 sales between $1.555 billion and $1.575 billion, exceeding analyst projections. “Our efforts to develop our foundational transaction drivers—innovation, paid media, and our Dutch Rewards loyalty program—are working,” CEO Christine Barone said in a statement. “We believe these efforts are contributing to current momentum and that there is considerable runway for further growth.” Dutch Bros stock (NYSE: BROS) has risen more than 143% in the last 12 months. Expansion plans and growth strategy The fast-growing Starbucks rival has made significant strides in its expansion. Dutch Bros recently opened its 1,000th store and added 151 locations in 2024 alone, which is on the lower end of projections it had made early last year. With plans to now open at least 160 more shops this year, the company continues its aggressive growth strategy while increasing its advertising efforts and expanding its rewards program. Barone also highlighted future plans for mobile ordering and food offerings. “We see a clear path forward, with multi-year transaction-driving initiatives that layer on top of this foundation, with opportunity to unlock throughput and ramp mobile order in 2025,” she said. “In 2026 and beyond, we are excited about opportunities with expanding our food offerings.” Preserving culture amid growth As Dutch Bros continues to expand, the company said it remains committed to preserving its culture of friendly service, courtesy of the “broistas” (Dutch Bros’s term for baristas) who have been key to its success. “As we expand [broistas’] roles, we must consider how to do so in ways that continue to foster a fun and energetic work experience that assures we continue to attract and retain the very best people,” Barone explained.
