  1. Just days after President Donald Trump’s second inauguration, Ruby Robinson went to Detroit’s immigration court to post a notice that a help desk his organization ran for people facing deportation was no longer available. The desk staffed by the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center shut down after a Trump executive order prompted the Justice Department to instruct nonprofit organizations “to stop work immediately” on four federally funded programs that provided information to people in immigration proceedings. “There were individuals in the waiting room who we otherwise would have been able to assist, but we’re not able to do so at this time,” said Robinson, managing attorney for the center, which he said has helped about 10,000 people since it began operating the help desk in December 2021. Without the programs that educate people in immigration courts and detention centers about their rights and the complicated legal process, many will end up navigating the system on their own. Advocates worry that due process and the backlogged immigration courts will suffer as Trump tries to make good on his campaign promise to crack down on illegal immigration. A coalition of nonprofit groups that provide the services filed a lawsuit Friday challenging the stop-work order and seeking to immediately restore access to the programs. Despite the loss of federal funding, staff from the Amica Center for Immigrant Rights went to a Virginia detention center to provide services the day after the Jan. 22 stop-work order. They had spoken to about two dozen people when detention center staff escorted them out, telling them they could no longer provide those services, Amica executive director Michael Lukens said, describing the stoppage as “devastating.” “We often hear that people don’t know what’s happening. Why are they detained? What’s going to happen next? And we are being stopped from even giving that basic level of orientation,” Lukens said. Lawyers running a help desk inside Chicago’s busy immigration court provided services to more than 2,000 people in 2024. The National Immigrant Justice Center started the effort in 2013 with private funding and expanded it three years later with federal funds. Since the stop-work order, the organization has provided scaled-down services, but they are unsure how long they will be able to continue that with the gap left by federal funding cuts, spokesperson Tara Tidwell Cullen said. Several organizations said they’ve been told that posters informing people of their services and information about legal help hotlines have been removed from detention centers. Congress allocates $29 million a year for the four programs—the Legal Orientation Program, the Immigration Court Helpdesk, the Family Group Legal Orientation, and the Counsel for Children Initiative—funding that’s spread among various groups across the country providing the services, Lukens said, adding that the programs have broad bipartisan support. The amount is the same regardless of the number of people they’re helping, and the organizations often do additional fundraising to cover their costs, he said. Trump previously targeted these programs during his first term, but this time things are different. In 2018, then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the funding would be pulled from the programs, but the threat of legal action by a coalition of organizations that provide the services, as well as bipartisan support from members of Congress, caused the Justice Department to reverse course. This time, the action was more abrupt, with the stop-work order issued just hours before it took effect and program staff being barred from detention centers. Immigration law is incredibly complicated and, unlike in criminal courts, people do not have a right to have an attorney appointed if they cannot afford one, and many end up going through the system without legal representation. Immigration courts throughout the country are clogged by a backlog of about 3.7 million cases, which can leave people in limbo for years. When people know what to expect and have their affairs in order, hearings move more quickly because judges don’t have to explain the basics to each person who appears before them, advocates assert. It can also reduce lines at filing windows in immigration courts because people know what forms they have to fill out and can get help completing them correctly. People can make informed choices to either move forward with a case knowing their chances and the risks involved or, if they don’t want to go through a court battle or don’t see any available relief that fits their situation, they may decide not to fight and to just go home, said Edna Yang, co-executive director of American Gateways, which operates in three detention centers and the immigration court in San Antonio, Texas. “Stopping programs that actually help people get the information they need isn’t going to fix the system,” Yang said. “It’s just going to make it worse.” The organizations also make sure due process rights are respected, alert people to imminent filing deadlines, ensure that translators are available, and help avoid deportation orders that could unlawfully return asylum seekers to a harmful situation, advocates said. Milagro, a 69-year-old woman from Venezuela, arrived in the U.S. in May 2024 when she got an appointment through a U.S. government app after spending four years in Mexico. The Associated Press agreed not to use her last name because she fears that speaking out could affect her pending case. She filed an asylum application, citing a fear for her life in Venezuela as part of the political opposition. She didn’t have a job when she arrived and used the help desk operated by Estrella del Paso at the immigration court in El Paso, Texas, for help with her asylum application. The last time she went, she discovered it was closed because of the stop-work order. “You feel a kind of frustration because the window that you had open to ask, to get advice, is closed,” she said in Spanish. “It is a feeling of helplessness and loneliness.” Without their help, she said, “I would have had to pay money that I do not have.” But with a court appearance coming up in February, she fears she will have to use much of the salary she earns as a caretaker for a 100-year-old woman to pay someone to help her. —Kate Brumback, Associated Press View the full article

  3. I just learned that one of my favorite ways to pass the time in a hotel gym has been given a catchy name and a celebrity endorsement. It’s the 15-15-15 workout, and it will give you a good 45-minute cardio session even if you cannot stand doing anything for 45 minutes straight. What is the 15-15-15 workout? The 15-15-15 is a simple idea: You just do 15 minutes each on three different cardio machines. Like so: 15 minutes on a spin bike 15 minutes on the elliptical 15 minutes on a treadmill I’ve often done a version of this when I’m at one of those sad hotel gyms with few or no weights, just cardio machines. There’s usually a treadmill, an elliptical, and/or a bike, so I’ll do a few minutes on each. The 15-15-15 version will give you a 45-minute workout. Where did the 15-15-15 workout come from? As far as I can tell, its origin is in one brief quote from an interview that Jennifer Aniston gave to In Style magazine in 2021. She said that, after taking time off for an injury, “I was missing that kind of sweat when you just go for it. I‘m going back to my 15-15-15, which is a 15-minute spin, elliptical, run.” Why the 15-15-15 is perfect if cardio bores youIf you get bored on cardio machines, a 45-minute workout is a pretty big ask. But 15? You could manage 15, I’m sure. That’s just a five-minute warmup, five minutes of solid work in the middle, and then for the last five minutes you’re on the home stretch. (Mentally breaking up workouts like this helps my brain, even if I'm doing the exact thing for all 15 minutes.) Then hop off that machine, choose another, and repeat. Three of those mini workouts and you’ve done 45 minutes for the day. Feel free to adjust the timing as needed; you could do a 10-10-10 for a 30-minute workout. How hard should the 15-15-15 workout be?There’s no wrong answer to this question. The 15-15-15 would be a great way to get in a zone 2 cardio workout, going at an easy conversational pace for all three segments. Some people find zone 2 work to be easy and fun, and they’ll watch a video or chat with a friend while doing it. But some of us get bored more easily, and breaking each mini-workout into intervals can make it a lot more engaging. Try this: Warm up for three minutes at an easy pace. Go hard for one minute, then recover with very easy activity for one minute. Repeat those intervals five more times, for a total of six hard and six recovery minutes. That’s three minutes of warming up, and 12 minutes of alternating intervals, ending with an easy minute. You can do this mini routine on each machine in turn, or only on some of them—perhaps the first and the last, while challenging yourself to hold a steady state on the middle machine. Can you do the 15-15-15 on different machines, or in a different order? You sure can! There’s nothing magic about the order of bike, elliptical, run. You can move them around. You can also swap in different equipment—how about stair stepper, bike, rowing machine? Or, heck, bounce between the bike and the treadmill if you only have those two machines available. (Hello, again, to very small hotel gyms.) The 15-15-15 isn’t so much a “workout” as it is a structure that you can fill in with any workouts you desire, so feel free to get creative. 4. When it comes to keeping your commercial space clean, no tool is more vital than a heavy-duty vacuum cleaner. As a small business owner, freelancer, or entrepreneur, you know that a clean environment promotes productivity, creates positive first impressions, and enhances overall satisfaction among employees and customers alike. But finding a robust commercial vacuum cleaner that lives up to its promises can be more difficult than vacuuming all the pet hair off your favorite area rug! Don’t worry. We’re going to cover all the ins and outs of heavy-duty vacuum cleaners to ensure you find the best one for your commercial needs. Understanding the Importance of Heavy-Duty Vacuum Cleaners Why does your business need a heavy-duty vacuum cleaner, you may ask? Well, imagine this: it’s a busy workday, and your trusty little home vacuum is huffing and puffing, struggling to clean large spaces and handle the tough cleaning task that a bustling office or storefront brings. Clearly, you need a heavy-duty upgrade! Regular vacuum cleaners are great for domestic cleaning, but when it comes to commercial cleaning, they may require more effort. Why? Because commercial spaces deal with a heavier influx of dirt and debris. Commercial vacuum cleaners are designed to be a thorough, long-lasting solution for spaces that see a lot of action. They not only ensure deep cleaning but are also built to last, thanks to heavy-duty plastic and other robust materials. Commercial vacuums come in different shapes and sizes, from upright vacuums to canister vacuums, cordless stick vacuums, and even backpack vacuum models. Each type has its own pros and cons, so understanding your specific needs and preferences is crucial in making the right choice. Factors to Consider When Choosing a Heavy-Duty Vacuum Cleaner When selecting heavy-duty vacuum cleaners for small businesses, several key factors come into play. We used the following criteria to curate our recommended list, with each criterion rated on a scale from 1 to 5 for its importance: Suction Power (5/5): The effectiveness of a vacuum cleaner largely depends on its suction power, especially for heavy-duty tasks. Durability (5/5): A robust build is essential for withstanding regular, intensive use. Ease of Use (4/5): The vacuum should be user-friendly, with intuitive controls and ergonomic design for comfortable operation. Versatility (4/5): The ability to handle various types of surfaces and debris is crucial for diverse cleaning needs. Filtration System (4/5): An effective filtration system is essential, particularly in settings that are sensitive to dust and allergens. Capacity (3/5): A larger capacity reduces the frequency of emptying the vacuum, enhancing efficiency. Noise Level (3/5): It is preferable to have lower noise levels, especially in customer-facing areas or locations subject to noise restrictions. Portability (3/5): Features like wheels and handles improve maneuverability, which is especially important for larger spaces. Maintenance Requirements (4/5): Easy-to-maintain vacuums save time and reduce long-term costs. Cost (3/5): While budget is a consideration, it should not compromise essential features like suction power and durability. These criteria guide our selection to ensure we recommend vacuum cleaners that meet the demanding needs of small businesses. Now, let’s move to the fun part – the product recommendations! 7. Have you ever worked under someone you just couldn’t wait to get away from—maybe to the point where you’d daydream about finding a new job (or hoping they’d leave instead)? That’s what we call an “Extinguisher.” These leaders sap energy from their teams and throw up roadblocks that stand in the way of success. On the flip side, “Generators” are those leaders who inspire and empower people to reach their full potential—and they’re the ones everyone wants to work for. Most of us want to steer clear of Extinguishers (and make sure we never become one ourselves). The trouble is, it’s not always obvious when you’re dealing with one—at least not until you’re already burned out. That’s why we conducted two major studies to pinpoint exactly how Extinguishers differ from Generators. Our research revealed four early warning signs that can help you spot an Extinguisher before it’s too late. Extinguishers hide their flaws and struggles Extinguishers wear a mask when they come to work – hiding their true selves. They often cover up their mistakes and flaws – to be perceived as the “perfect” leader. Unfortunately, this creates distance between them and their employees. Can you really be open about your struggles if your leader seems perfect and untouchable? It can feel too vulnerable to share imperfections with someone who is “perfect”. In this situation, it’s hard to get the support you need because you won’t feel comfortable asking for it. Even well-meaning leaders can fall into this Extinguisher trap. Leaders want to be seen as competent and deserving of their role. So, they may feel extra pressure to keep up a facade. However, employees can sense leaders’ inauthenticity, decreasing trust and healthy communication on the team. If you have never seen or heard about your leader struggling with something, if all you hear about is how “perfect” they are, or you feel like they are being fake, watch out. You may be working for an Extinguisher. Extinguishers don’t care about your personal life Adding to the distance between them and their employees, Extinguishers do not want to hear about employees’ personal lives. They don’t care about what’s going on with you outside of work and see conversations about your partner, pets, or other important aspects of your life as irrelevant. Extinguishers also fail to share anything about themselves with their employees. This is because Extinguishers believe that you shouldn’t bring your personal life to work – and view these two spheres as separate. Why is this a problem? If a leader doesn’t know you, how can they know how to support you? Extinguishers don’t understand you as a whole person. They are focusing solely on your work. But, what happens if something awful occurs in your personal life that has clear implications for your work? What if you need extra time or some flexibility to manage life stressors? Extinguishers don’t want to hear it and, thus, won’t give you the support that you need. If you feel like your leader knows nothing about who you are as a person, you are likely working for an Extinguisher. Extinguishers never disconnect from work Extinguishers never take a break. In fact, they often brag about working late at night or early in the morning. You get emails from them at all hours of the day and while they are supposedly on vacation. For example, on Sunday nights, Extinguishers might send tons of messages in preparation for the busy week they are about to create for you. This can create pressures to respond when employees are supposed to be disconnecting. But, Extinguishers do not believe in work-life balance. They prioritize work over life – and often expect you to do the same. Unfortunately, Extinguishers’ bad examples create harmful expectations. Actions are much louder than words – when leaders never disconnect, neither will their employees. Plus, employees start to believe that being always “on” is required to get to the next level. This can create unsustainable expectations about what it takes to be a leader. If you never see your leader disconnect or if you consistently get messages during “off” hours, you are probably working for an Extinguisher. Extinguishers believe there’s only one right way Finally, Extinguishers think there’s one right way to do everything – and it’s their way. How do you become a leader? By following their exact path. How do you achieve that big goal? By taking the steps they would take. Extinguishers don’t recognize that there are many ways to be successful. This is a recipe for disaster. Processes will never evolve and improve if organizations stick to the way it’s always been done. Plus, we know that career paths do not look the same for everyone. Your strengths, background, and goals are unique. Each leader makes it to the top in their own way. Extinguishers discourage uniqueness and make it harder to lead authentically. If your manager shoots down new ideas, only offers advice based on their own experiences, and micromanages you to do things exactly their way, there’s a good chance you’re dealing with an Extinguisher. If you spot these warning signs, think about ways to build a support system that can help protect you from their negative behavior. If you’re feeling courageous, you might even try sharing some feedback so they have the opportunity to grow. It’s also wise to start mapping out a plan to move on before things get worse. And when you’re interviewing for a new role, don’t forget to ask some probing questions to see if your potential new boss shows any of these red flags. It’s the best way to avoid jumping from one Extinguisher to another. View the full article
  8. Conventional wisdom says to use your tax return to pay off debt or add to your savings, but psychologists say it’s also acceptable to use a tax return to invest in your own happiness. “When people get a tax return, it’s seen as a bonus and it can feel like an even bigger bonus when people decide to invest it in themselves,” says Maya Weir, clinical psychologist and founder at Thriving California, a private practice in Napa, Calif. Don’t limit your thinking about money to just saving and investing, says Annie Cole, EdD, founder and money coach at Money Essentials for Women in Vancouver, Wash. “If you’re already meeting the mark when it comes to finances, paying down debt, putting extra cash in saving and covering your expenses, then the next thing to do is explore how surplus money can impact your life,” she says. Cole recommends making a bucket list of what you would do if you had extra cash to spend. However, she warns against simply making a list of expensive items to buy. Instead, she recommends focusing on ways to spend money that will either create a long-term memory such as a trip or a special dinner or will improve your life such as joining an upscale fitness center that offers yoga and meditation if you’re into wellness. Jenny Mahlum, an integrative psychotherapist at New York Counseling in Manhattan, agrees that if you’re looking to invest in your happiness, it’s best to focus on novel experiences rather than accumulating items. “While we might momentarily get a burst of joy when wear a new sweater or drive a new car, eventually the novelty tends to wear off and you stop appreciating the experience of the item you just bought,” Mahlum says. In comparison, a novel experience can create a new memory. Here are five unique ways to use your tax refund to invest in your happiness. 1. Take a class or workshop that would give you skills to generate side income or help you get a promotion. Learning a new skill can increase your sense of accomplishment and confidence, and that could contribute to feelings of happiness, Mahlum says. She recommends framing this purchase as an investment in yourself and align it with your values and a larger sense of purpose rather than seeing it as a means to earn more money so you can buy an extra sweater or handbag. Generating more income through a side hustle or getting a raise also creates a sense of abundance, which generally makes people feel happier and more secure, Weir says. 2. Make a home upgrade that would bring you joy, such as creating a reading nook or mini-indoor garden. A home upgrade that creates a mini sanctuary has the potential to bring joy daily however, Mahlum recommends spending time reflect on it beforehand to make sure it’s really something you want to invest in. Think about why you want it and imagine yourself using it otherwise, if you build it and don’t use it, you might feel guilty, Mahlum warns. Keep in mind that a home upgrade doesn’t have to be elaborate. Cole recommends walking through your house and thinking about where you spend the most time and how you could make that area more comfortable. For instance, maybe you want to make your bedroom cozier with new pillows and hotel-quality sheets. Think in terms of little delights. “Sometimes it’s a good meal, a good chocolate, a special coffee blend or cozy pajamas,” Weir says. “Anything that makes you feel physically comfortable.” 3. Create a “try something new” fund and use the money to experience something new each month. According to research by Dr. Laurie Santos, experiences tend to make us happier than material possessions because they provide a sense of social connection and personal growth, Mahlum says. Novel experiences tend to bring people joy, Weir says. There’s something about trying something new that gives us a sense of accomplishment and provides a release of dopamine. 4. Create a “happiness fund” to pay for random acts of kindness like paying for a stranger’s groceries or supporting a local artist. People feel joy when they are being generous with others, Weir says. There is also an empathy layer, she says. When you see that someone else happy, it can make you feel happy too. People report a boost in happiness when completing good deeds for others. A study by researchers at Ohio State University found that performing acts of kindness can ease depression and anxiety. 5. Create a “micro-adventure” fund and use the money for several unique experiences throughout the year rather than waiting until you’ve saved enough for a big, three-week vacation. Curate experiences for yourself that create feelings of awe, Mahlum says. “We underestimate what feelings of awe can elicit in us in terms of a higher sense of well-being that can cascade into feelings of joy and creativity,” she says. 9. Lately, I’ve noticed my grocery money isn’t going quite so far, especially with meat. I’ve needed to change things up a bit. Specifically, the chicken that I usually toss into my salads, pasta dishes, and soups, well, I’m swapping it out for slabs of fried cheese. Is it weird? Maybe. But I love an excuse to eat cheese, and it’s really working for my wallet. Let me start by saying that my household consumes a great deal of chicken. What can I say: It’s a wonderful bird. And when you’re buying multiple pounds of it, and if it’s the bougie air-chilled chicken that I like, you can see how this quickly ends up being unaffordable. While my problem may be the price of chicken, it’s a likely story with numerous other meats as well. Steak, fish, lunch meats, you name it, the price is up. The answer to this problem is cheese. Why fried cheese worksCheese—the grillable, fry-able kind of cheese—is actually helping me stretch my budget and, remarkably, it’s been pretty effortless. I haven’t given up on chicken completely, but replacing it in a few meals per week has been a nice switch-up, and it’s truly satisfying as a main protein. It’s even less prep and effort than replacing meat with slabs of tofu. (And this is coming from a person who adores tofu.) Where texture is concerned, fried cheese is a delight. Whether it’s halloumi, queso blanco, or any assortment of frying cheese, the outside becomes crusty and browned where it contacts the pan. The inside remains soft, chewy, or squeaky, depending on the variety, and you’re rewarded with creamy, salty flavors that pair up well with nearly any dish. In regards to preparation, frying up a batch of cheese slabs is a helluva lot faster than cooking meat. It requires nothing more than a knife and a dry frying pan, and you don’t have to deal with trimming fat, gristle, or the bacterial risks of raw meat. If you’re worried about the loss of protein, don’t fret too much. A serving of this type of cheese has the equivalent amount of protein to a large egg, about 6 grams. What cheeses are best for fryingIf you haven’t done it before, frying cheese is easy. The best types of cheese for this purpose are firm or semi-firm high-protein cheeses because they don’t liquify when met with heat. You'll want halloumi, paneer, queso blanco, panela cheese, queso para freir, or kasseri cheese. Some packages will even say “grilling cheese” or “frying cheese.” When you’re in the grocery store, check the refrigerated aisle; they may be with other cheeses or potentially in a section with International cheese varieties. Depending on the cheese and your grocery store, a brick with 10 servings or more might cost $3 to $7 dollars How to fry cheeseCut the block of cheese into planks. I usually cut them about a quarter-inch thick, but you could certainly cut them to a half-inch or thicker. Add the cheese to a frying pan. Make sure there’s some space between the slices. They will expand a bit when the heat is on and you want to keep them from touching. Turn the heat up to medium-low and allow the cheese to cook for a couple minutes. Carefully lift one piece to see how it’s browning underneath. I like to fry it until it’s medium to dark brown. Flip all of the pieces to brown the other side. From here, the world is your cheese plank. Nestle these crisp, flavorful rectangles onto risotto, or serve them as the centerpiece for a green salad. Place the slabs of cheese on a pedestal of pasta with tomato sauce. Chop the planks into smaller pieces and stir them into soups or curry sauces. Or simply top a slice with a bit of jam and enjoy it as a tart and salty snack. View the full article

  11. Cryptocurrency investors are waking up to a bloodbath this morning. As of the time of this writing, crypto markets are getting hammered as major coins including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP, are down across the board. Popular meme coins like Dogecoin and $TRUMP have also collapsed. But why is crypto crashing? Here’s what you need to know Trump’s tariffs may launch a global trade war Over the weekend, President Donald Trump initiated tariffs against America’s two largest trading partners. Trump ordered that tariffs as high as 25% be levied on numerous Canadian and Mexican goods entering the country. Trump also announced an additional 10% tariff on certain Chinese goods, as well as threatened tariffs on goods imported from the EU. Tariffs are not paid for by the countries whose goods they are levied against. Tariffs are paid by the companies who are importing those goods into America. For example, if Walmart is importing goods from Mexico, Walmart must now pay those tariffs on the goods. Or if a U.S. energy supplier is importing gas from Canada, that U.S. energy supplier is on the hook for paying the tariffs. Those U.S. companies will not simply absorb the costs of the tariffs, as this would affect their margins and thus their bottom lines. Instead, those companies will pass the cost of the tariffs on to American consumers, raising the costs that Americans must pay for goods. Canada has already outlined its response to Trump’s tariffs, placing a 25% tariff on numerous American goods entering the country. Mexico says it will follow suit with tariffs of its own on U.S. imported goods. It is likely that China will follow suit, and if Trump unleashes tariffs on the European Union, the EU will react in kind. In other words, Trump’s tariffs could mean the world is on the cusp of a global trade war. Trade wars increase costs for businesses and consumers. Because of higher prices, consumers tend to spend less, hurting businesses’ bottom lines. The higher costs also lead to inflationary pressures. All this can dramatically increase economic uncertainty—and markets hate uncertainty, including cryptocurrency markets. The risk of a global trade war is sinking crypto markets Trump’s tariffs and the resulting trade war they look to be kicking off are sending crypto markets tumbling. As of the time of this writing, major cryptocurrencies are tanking. Bitcoin is currenlty down almost 4%, to just above $95,000 a coin. But that drop looks minuscule compared to other cryptocurrencies. Ethereum and XRP have crashed over 16%, while Cardano is down over 19%. And it’s not just the more well-known coins that are tanking. Popular mem coins are also crashing. Dogecoin is currently down over 13%, while President Trump’s meme coin, $TRUMP, is down nearly 14%. Of course, none of these coins are directly impacted by Trump’s tariffs. However, when economic uncertainty arises—as is the case with trade wars—investors tend to extract profits where they can while they can. That’s why one possible reason for crypto’s collapse today may be profit-taking. Crypto markets have had a good run as of late, so it’s little surprise that many investors worried about the broader economic impacts of a global trade war may be seeking to lock in what profits they can now by selling their cryptocurrencies. Another possible reason for the crypto fall today is that cryptocurrency markets are historically volatile—and if a global trade war does kick off, it could cause economic uncertainty worldwide. During uncertain economic times, many investors tend to stay away from more volatile assets, leading to decreased demand in some markets. Fear of possible reduced demand for crypto in the near future may also be impacting crypto prices today. Stock markets are in crisis, too It’s important to note that Trump’s tariffs aren’t just rattling crypto investors. Stock market investors are also panicking this morning. While U.S. markets aren’t open as of the time of this writing, futures are down across the board. In premarket trading, Dow Futures have dropped over 560 points, or 1.26%. S&P Futures are down 85 points, or 1.4%, and Nasdaq Futures are down 349 points, or about 1.62%. There’s no telling how long Trump’s tariffs will stay in place, and it is yet unknown exactly how countries like Mexico and China will react, not to mention the European Union if Trump enacts tariffs against its goods too. What does seem certain is that there will be significant uncertainty in both the cryptocurrency and stock markets for the near future. View the full article

  20. Are you looking to start your entrepreneurial journey and need some ideas? Here are 25 cash flow business ideas you can start. These small businesses are easy to start, require little up-front investment, and generate a consistent flow of income. Let’s get started! What are the Characteristics of a Good Cash Flow Business? Having a steady cash flow business with recurring income is important for small business owners. Here are five characteristics of a good cash flow business: Low Overhead Costs A business with low overhead ensures that a significant portion of the revenue isn’t eaten up by fixed and variable costs. It’s the foundation of sustainability. Less money spent on essentials like rent, inventory, and equipment means more profit at the end of the day. Scalable A scalable business model is a gem. This means as the business grows, the increase in profits outpaces the increase in costs. It allows entrepreneurs to expand their reach, tap into new markets, or introduce new products/services without proportionally increasing their expenditure. Recurring Revenue The true advantage of recurring revenue lies in its predictability. Companies that benefit from a reliable and consistent income stream, like subscription models, can make more informed plans, reinvest with assurance, and maintain stability even during market fluctuations. High-Profit Margins Profit isn’t just about making money; it’s about keeping it. Businesses with high profit margins have the advantage of being able to reinvest in their growth, weather economic downturns, and provide returns to stakeholders while still maintaining a healthy bottom line. Simple to Operate Simplicity leads to efficiency. When a business model minimizes the need for extensive efforts in marketing, customer service, or daily operations, it allows the entrepreneur to concentrate on strategic growth. These businesses typically have streamlined processes, well-defined value propositions, and require less micromanagement. READ MORE: What is Cash Flow? 23. AI has been used in the hiring process for many years. Anyone who has ever wrangled their résumé into an Applicant Tracking System has experienced the frustration of distilling your human-ness for a keyword-focused bot. But that’s just scratching the surface. Already a quarter of employers use some form of AI in their hiring process and, according to some estimates, nearly 70% of companies will be using AI tools to hire by the end of this year. It’s no surprise that AI in hiring is attractive to employers. It can make what’s often an overwhelming and time-consuming process much more efficient. But for job seekers, this technology can make the already opaque hiring process more difficult to navigate. And now, as AI becomes more sophisticated and widespread, it won’t stop there. Even the interview, often the most human part of the hiring process, is being outsourced to bots. So, how can job seekers prepare for these changes? What should companies and hiring managers consider before implementing new tech? On the latest episode of The New Way We Work, I spoke to Dr. Kerry McInerney, an AI ethicist and researcher at the University of Cambridge. She says that from a candidate’s perspective the job search process now has “a lot of unknown unknowns.” 4 ways AI is used in hiring McInerney says there are four main areas where you’ll see AI being used in hiring, some more visible than others: 1. The dissemination of ads: Companies might use AI to decide where job ads are surfaced and deliver it to specific people who the recruiter might think would be a good fit. This application could seem innocuous, but it has the potential to encourage the same profile of candidates if the parameters are too narrow. 2. Screening candidates: Here, AI is used to go through a large volume of résumés and create a short list. This is very common and also widely critiqued. Not only do these systems make it difficult for candidates to craft a résumé that will get past these screens, but it’s also ripe for unintentional bias. McInerney referenced a 2019 case study where Amazon tested a beta version of an AI résumé screening tool that was shown to systematically discriminate against female candidates. Beyond extreme red flags like that, résumé screening tools often miss things like transferable skills or nuance like career gaps. 3. Assessment of candidates: Another way AI tools are being used in hiring is to test candidates or to distinguish candidates from one another once a company has a short list. Most of this is pretty visible to candidates: things like gamified tests and skill assessments. Another is AI video interviews. McInerney pointed out that these tools had a boom during COVID-19, but that many of the metrics they measure (including facial recognition-based tools that read a candidate’s voice and expressions and do sentiment analysis on the words that they use to get a sense of a candidate’s personality) are viewed as pseudoscience by AI ethicists. It’s also not possible to discern someone’s personality from their face. Some AI interview tools have also shown to rank candidates higher for arbitrary and irrelevant factors, like having a bookcase in the background. 4. Administrative aspects of hiring: The most innocuous way AI is being used in hiring is tools that help companies schedule interviews, or via AI chatbots on a company’s website that answer questions about a job. These types of tools run a very low risk of introducing bias into the process and fulfill the basic promise of AI: to reduce tedious and time-consuming tasks. The importance of asking questions McInerney emphasized that the AI hiring tools are made with the best intentions but that, if they aren’t created with the expertise of hiring managers, they can end up out of step. Her bottom line for employers: Don’t be sucked in by AI hype that tells you a tool can do things that actually sound really impossible. “There’s just a huge emphasis on AI literacy, which is very important,” she says. “Sometimes, the way that these tools get talked about in hyper-technical ways can make people feel like that they can’t ask those questions or they’re scared of looking silly or ignorant if they ask them.” But, she says, ”It’s really important to ask those questions, because any tool that is worth its salt should have scientific backing and should be able to show it.” In other words, the most important tool when using AI in hiring is the very human skill of critical thinking. 24. Hello and welcome to Modern CEO! I’m Stephanie Mehta, CEO and chief content officer of Mansueto Ventures. Each week this newsletter explores inclusive approaches to leadership drawn from conversations with executives and entrepreneurs, and from the pages of Inc. and Fast Company. If you received this newsletter from a friend, you can sign up to get it yourself every Monday morning. When Geoff Martha, chairman and CEO of Medtronic, took over the medical device maker’s Restorative Therapies Group in 2015, the company faced a tough decision. The group at the time was underperforming, and the leadership team had to consider how to prioritize technology investments such as neuromodulation—sending electric signals to the brain to treat disorders—that can take years to develop and bring to market or invest in other opportunities that might produce more immediate wins. Management decided to keep investing in brain therapies, and the bet appears to be paying off. Earlier this year, Medtronic received approval from European regulators for its adaptive deep brain simulation (aDBS) technology, which includes an implant that can dynamically adjust signals to help personalize therapy for people with Parkinson’s disease. “Our leadership team joined hands,” Martha recalls. “We said, ‘this is what we’re going to do, and it’s going to be a long-term play.’” Playing the long game Long-term plays are nothing new for Medtronic, which was founded as a medical device repair business in 1949 by Earl Bakken and Palmer Hermundslie. The company introduced the first battery-operated pacemaker in 1957 and the first implanted pacemaker a year later. Despite its groundbreaking innovations, the company was on the verge of bankruptcy in the 1960s. The scare prompted Bakken to write a mission statement that highlighted the company’s commitment to contributing to human welfare. At Medtronic, those contributions come to life through direct interaction with patients. Every year the company brings patients from around the world to its operational headquarters in Minnesota to hear about their lives before and after treatments and therapies with Medtronic technologies. “They thank our employees, and there’s not a dry eye in the place, including mine,” Martha says. In addition to improving the human condition, Martha says Medtronic needs to be performance driven in order to attract new talent, develop best-in-class new products, increase profits, and reward shareholders. Martha’s holistic approach to long-termism brought to mind a 2024 LinkedIn post by leadership expert and Harvard Business School executive fellow Bill George, who also served as Medtronic chair and CEO from 1989 to 2002. In a piece titled, “Choosing long-term leadership in a short-term world,” George urged executives to stay true to their companies’ missions and strengths. “Creating sustainable value must start with the alignment of all stakeholders around a shared mission and values in service to an organization’s customers, employees, shareholders, and all those who have a stake in its success,” he wrote. Marrying mission and performance I asked Martha what it was like to sit in a chair once occupied by someone who has literally written the book—make that books—on leadership, and he commended George and Omar Ishrak, his immediate predecessor, for their accessibility to Medtronic’s leadership team. “We keep in touch because they understand the mission,” he says. “But they talk about how much harder it is to be a CEO today. And so, we take the best of what they did and emphasize what we think still works, but then we’ve got to put our own imprint on that.” And one of Martha’s imprints is the marriage of mission and performance. “My job and our leadership team’s job is to keep reminding our employees that we’ve got to be an ‘and’ company: mission and performance,” he says. “We know we can do both.” How does your company combine performance and purpose? Does your company combine mission and performance—and if so, how? Does one take priority over the other? Send your comments to me at stephaniemehta@mansueto.com. I’d like to share some of your insights in a future newsletter. 25. There are certain social media rules we can all agree on: Ghosting a conversation is impolite, and replying “k” to a text is the equivalent of a backhand slap (violent, wrong, and rude). But what about the rest of the rules? When can we really remind someone of our old Venmo request? What happens when someone tries to flirt with you on LinkedIn? Fortunately, terminally online writers Delia Cai and Steffi Cao are here to answer all your digital quandaries, big or small. Welcome to Fast Company’s new advice column, Posting Playbook. This week, Steffi opines on what you should do when you don’t want to be tagged in the group photo. How should I tell my friend I look bad in the group photo and want them to untag me? So you’re looking through the group iCloud after a night out, where your Type A friend has uploaded all the photos. You swipe through and immediately cringe. Oh no! This was not the sultry, chic, carefree pictures you thought you took together. Your hair is messy, you’re not at your optimal photo-taking angle, your skin isn’t at its best, you can see your undereye circles, your cheeks are puffy from last night’s ramen, your smile looks kind of…weird. And then, Defcon 10: Someone posts that group photo on their public Instagram feed. And they’ve tagged you. Que horror! What you should do is just tell your friend you want to be untagged. Yes, I’m all for learning to be okay with the different ways your face looks, and the importance of body neutrality, but if it’s going to discomfit you to the point of distraction, just tell them. That’s your friend after all, right? In all likelihood, they’ll tell you that you’re beautiful and perfect (you are) and respect the untag. No one is responsible for your own self-perception, but we’re all going through the same mental obstacle course of being constantly exposed to technology-influenced ideals of beauty, so we can at least be polite about it. There’s been a lot of coverage about how we were never meant to see ourselves this much, and it still rings true. Social media has lured us into believing our faces are insufficient under the microscope of the infinite scroll. By the metrics of the wider celebrity and influencer landscape, everyone else seems to have glass skin, a defined jawline, a cinched waist, shoulders that could be drawn in perpendicular lines—so why don’t we? Not to mention, everyone can be made into content by any phone at any time, making us more conscious than ever of how we look from every angle. While content used to be a window into life, saved for special occasions or those with the technological access and capability, now, every moment of life is a frame for content. Meals, daily routines, nights out, routines at home. There’s an emphasis to make every aspect perfectly aspirational. We don’t have to accept it, but in the meantime, we need to find ways to manage it while understanding that it’s not the healthiest choice for our lives. Overall, my stance is that the proper etiquette is to let everyone select their favorite photos before running to post them online. Everyone’s relationship with their own bodies is so personal, the least we can do as people going through the same thing is to respect an Instagram request when it comes up. How should I introduce myself in a group chat? At this point, we have seen every kind of group chat introduction under the sun, ranging from “hiiii this is sarah so excited to be here~” to “Victoria.” It can be daunting to introduce yourself, especially in a big group, but moreover, it’s more important to start standardizing it all. My take is that we should all start introducing ourselves in group chats with a simple first name-last name text, simply for the organizational purpose of logging contacts into everyone’s phones. There are no nicknames in my phone, no emojis for loved ones. Everyone is saved by their government name. Toss a “hi!” in if you want, but I need it to be short and informative. Cut the nonsense. I don’t need to know that you are excited to be in the group chat—we all are, and I’m looking forward to hanging out with you. The information I need is an ID. Especially if you’re introducing yourself via text outside a group chat, I also encourage that you add context as to how you both know each other. Everyone is overstimulated, and it’s nice to keep that reminder in. I have 322 unread text messages from a lot of unsaved numbers because I can’t figure out who “emilyyyyy :3” is. Did I meet emilyyyyy at a work event? At a bar? Through a mutual friend’s birthday party? What’s wrong with: Hi! It’s Steffi Cao, glad I ran into you at the bookshop. Let me know when you’re free for coffee! I don’t care that it doesn’t reflect my loud and abrasive personality! I’m here to make our phone storage easier. Bring back organization! I will learn about your cute and dazzling personality IRL! View the full article
