Joann fabrics’ last stores are closing: This is your final weekend to shop at remaining locations. See the full list
Fans of Joann have one last chance to grab fistfuls of fabric, yarn, and other critical sewing supplies before the ill-fated retailer closes for good—but time is running out. The beloved brand, which has been winding down operations after seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for a second time, will close its last remaining stores at the end of May, meaning this is the last full weekend that they will be open for business. A spokesperson for GA Group, the asset firm that took control of Joann in February, shared the list of locations with Fast Company. It includes 444 stores in 45 states. At the time of its bankruptcy filing, Joann had roughly 800 locations, but hundreds of those stores closed in April, as Fast Company previously reported. Among the remaining stores, California has the most, with around 40 locations left. New York, Michigan, Texas, and Florida, and Arizona also have relatively large shares of stores on the list. Why did Joann fabrics unravel? Founded in 1943, Joann Inc. grew into a craft superstore with hundreds of locations in the ensuing decades as a publicly traded company. By the late 1990s, it was the country’s largest fabric and crafts retailer. The company was taken private in 2011 by private equity firm Leonard Green & Partners for around $1.6 billion, only to go public again a decade later as the COVID-19 pandemic was fueling a resurgence of crafting and other at-home activities. But those good times didn’t last, and the company eventually succumbed to a number of factors that have battered many physical retail chains in recent years, including high inflation and the broader shift to online shopping. When it filed for bankruptcy in January, it reported nearly $616 million in debt obligations. The remaining Joann stores have been holding going-out-of-business sales. According to GA Group, all stores will be closed by Saturday, May 31. You can find the full list below. Saltbox Introduces Access Plan to Make Logistics More Accessible for Product-Based Entrepreneurs
Saltbox, the Atlanta-based co-warehousing and logistics company, announced the launch of its new Access Plan on May 22, 2025, aiming to lower the barrier of entry for small and emerging product-based businesses looking for flexible logistics and workspace solutions. The Access Plan is a new, low-cost membership tier that allows entrepreneurs to work onsite at any Saltbox location and access key logistics services without the commitment of leasing a dedicated warehouse suite. With this plan, Saltbox seeks to broaden its reach and empower a wider range of business owners, including solopreneurs, ecommerce startups, and early-stage brands. “At Saltbox, our mission is to remove barriers to entrepreneurship,” said Olivia Mariani, Vice President of Marketing at Saltbox. “The Access Plan reflects that mission by giving rising business owners a way to plug into our community, gain access to key logistics services, and grow their product-based business without the need for a warehouse space.” Members of the Access Plan will benefit from a range of services and amenities across Saltbox’s nationwide network of locations. These include: Saltbox-managed freight receiving and onsite carrier pickups Use of open coworking desks, packing stations, and photo studios On-site logistics support provided by Saltbox staff Access to discounted shipping rates through the Parsel app Member pricing for additional services like pick & pack and storage Invitations to exclusive member programming and community events The ability to upgrade to a dedicated warehouse suite as the business grows The company positions the Access Plan as an ideal option for entrepreneurs who are outgrowing home-based operations and are seeking professional environments that offer flexibility and scalability. With no requirement for private warehouse space, this plan is intended to serve as a gateway to Saltbox’s broader offerings. The Access Plan is now available at all Saltbox locations. The company says it’s especially suited for ecommerce brands needing logistical support, workspace, and a collaborative community as they build and expand. Anthropic’s Promises Its New Claude AI Models Are Less Likely to Try to Deceive You
While it doesn't have quite the same prominence as ChatGPT or Google Gemini, the Claude AI bot developed by Anthropic continues to improve and innovate. Brand new Claude 4 models are now available, promising upgrades in coding, reasoning, precision, and the ability to manage long-running tasks independently. There are two new models, Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4, and Anthropic says they're both "setting new standards" for what you can expect from AI. Coding is a big focus, and the models are said to have achieved the highest scores to date on two widely used AI coding benchmarking tools, SWE-bench and Terminal-bench. Claude 4 models can actually work for hours on projects without any user input, Anthropic says. The updated models are better at handling more steps across more complex tasks, debugging their own work, and solving tricky problems along the way. They should also follow user instructions more exactly, and create end results that look better and work more reliably. Anthropic quotes partners such as GitHub, Cursor, and Rakuten in explaining how much of a step forward these models are. Away from code generation and analysis, the models also bring with them extended thinking, the ability to work on multiple tasks in parallel, and improved memory. They're better at integrating web searches as needed, and to check for supporting information and make sure they're on the right track with their answers. New AI model launches usually come with benchmark charts showing improvements—and this one is no different. Credit: Anthropic Also new are "thinking summaries" that give more insight into how Claude 4 has reached its conclusions, and an "extended thinking" feature, launching in beta, that lets you force the AI bot to take more time mulling over its responses. Anthropic is now making its Claude Code suite of tools available more generally as well, another step towards agentic AI that can work autonomously, without continuous help from flesh and blood users. In a demo video, Claude 4 models are shown compiling research papers from the web, putting together an online ordering system, and extracting information from documents to create actionable tasks. Claude 4 is available now (but you'll need to pay for the more advanced model)The Claude Sonnet 4 model, which is faster and doesn't have quite the same capacity in terms of thinking, coding, and memory, is available now to all Claude users. The more advanced Claude Opus 4, which also includes extra tools and integrations, is available to users on any of Anthropic's paid subscriptions. The path to releasing these Claude 4 models wasn't all smooth: Anthropic says its safety advice partner warned against releasing earlier versions of the models because of their tendency to "'scheme' and deceive." Those issues have now been worked out, apparently, but it's a reminder that as AI models get increasingly powerful, they also need to come with improved guardrails and safety features attached. The new models are available inside Claude now. Credit: Lifehacker I'm not really a coder, so I can't comment with any real authority on the primary upgrades included with Claude 4, but I have been able to test out the extended reasoning and thinking capabilities of Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Opus 4. These capabilities aren't easy to quantify or measure, but all the responses I got were well written and well presented, and as far as I could tell provided accurate information, with online citations. To be honest, I'm always a bit stuck when it comes to how to make full use of AI chatbots and their latest upgrades. They can definitely save time when running certain web searches and researching topics online, but I don't fully trust the results, or AI's ability to decide what is relevant and what isn't—I'd still much rather do the reading and summarizing myself, even if it's slower. There's a new Extended Thinking Mode you can make use of. Credit: Lifehacker Maybe I need to start a coding project and see how far I can get on vibes alone. I did ask Claude Opus 4 to build me a simple HTML time tracker I could run in a browser tab, to make sure I wasn't spending too much time distracted during the day. It did the job in a couple of minutes, and produced something that worked well, closely matching the instructions I gave. While it functioned fine, Claude 4 reported a couple of errors along the way, which of course I didn't understand—I guess I can ask the AI about them. Anthropic isn't the only AI company with new models to tout. At Google I/O 2025 earlier this week, the company unveiled improved coding assistance and thought summaries in Gemini, following on from the announcement of its best AI models yet a few weeks ago. OpenAI, meanwhile, has been testing its GPT-4.5 model since February, touting improvements in coding and problem solving. View the full article

China blasts Trump administration’s ban on Harvard’s international students
The Chinese government said Friday that the The President administration’s move to ban international students from Harvard would harm America’s international standing, as anxious students and parents overseas fretted over what would come next. Among the two largest parts of the international student community in Harvard are Chinese and Indian students. The university enrolled 6,703 international students across all of its schools in 2024, according to the school’s data, with 1,203 of those from China and 788 from India. The The President administration’s move, announced Thursday, was a hot topic on Chinese social media. State broadcaster CCTV questioned whether the U.S. would remain a top destination for foreign students, noting Harvard was already suing the U.S. government in court. “But with the long litigation period, thousands of international students may have trouble waiting,” the CCTV commentary said. It went on to say that it becomes necessary for international students to consider other options “when policy uncertainty becomes the norm.” Educational cooperation with the U.S. is mutually beneficial and China opposes its politicization, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a daily briefing in Beijing. “The relevant actions by the U.S. side will only damage its own image and international credibility,” she said. She added that China would firmly protect the rights and interests of Chinese students and scholars abroad but she didn’t offer any details on how it would do so in this situation. Indian authorities say they currently assessing the impact of the U.S. order on Indian students who are already enrolled with Harvard, as well as those aspiring to study there in future, but have not issued any statements of criticism. Chinese students in U.S. previous point of tension The issue of Chinese students studying overseas has long been a point of tension in the relationship with the United States. During The President’s first term, China’s Ministry of Education warned students about rising rejections rates and shorter terms for visas in the U.S. Last year, the Chinese foreign ministry protested that a number of Chinese students had been interrogated and sent home upon arrival at U.S. airports. Chinese state media has long played up gun violence in the U.S. and portrayed America as a dangerous place. Some Chinese students are opting to study in the U.K. or other countries rather than the U.S. Meanwhile, two universities in Hong Kong extended invites to affected students. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology said it would welcome international students already at Harvard and those who have been admitted in a statement Friday. City University in Hong Kong did as well without mentioning Harvard by name. Some people in China joked online about having the university open a branch in the northeastern Chinese city of Harbin, whose name shares the same character as Harvard’s name in Chinese. Wait and see Mumbai-based higher education and career advisory firm, ReachIvy, is receiving anxious queries from aspirants and their parents about the impact of The President administration’s latest move. The company’s founder, Vibha Kagzi, herself an alumnus of the Harvard Business School, said they were advising students to keep calm, and wait to see how the situation unfolds as legal challenges were underway. “Harvard will surely fight back,” she said, adding that the situation remains fluid. Kagzi, while recalling her days from 2010 at Harvard, said the U.S. was then welcoming international students and its immigration policies supported educational aspirants. “Indian students should stay hopeful. Universities value global talent and are exploring all options to ensure continuity in admission and learning,” she said. Associated Press writer Kanis Leung in Hong Kong and AP researcher Shihuan Chen contributed. Roy reported from New Delhi. —Huizhong Wu and Rajesh Roy, Associated Press View the full article

These Scammers Target People Recovering From Natural Disasters
It's always storm season somewhere, and recent disasters in the South and Midwest have left significant damage in their wake. Unfortunately, scammers strike when people are vulnerable. Some seemingly helpful individuals and organizations may be what the Better Business Bureau calls "storm chasers"—fraudsters who target homeowners impacted by severe weather or a natural disaster that causes damage and necessitates major repairs. How storm recovery scams workPost-storm home improvement scams can play out in a number of ways, but they usually start with an unsolicited phone call or knock on your door from a "contractor" offering to repair your home quickly and on the cheap. They may say that they are doing work for your neighbors and have leftover materials and extra time and can offer you a deal. They may pressure you to pay upfront so they can begin immediately. They may tell you that you can submit the bill to your homeowners insurance for reimbursement or persuade you to sign over your claim payment to them. More than likely, none of this is true. These fake contractors will take your money and run, sometimes without doing any work at all. Or they'll do such shoddy repairs that you'll end up paying again to have it done right. This isn't the only way in which people attempt to take advantage of post-storm recovery efforts. Scammers will set up fake donation sites and collect money that'll never be distributed to the cause or community they claim to represent. Some bad actors may even impersonate FEMA personnel or other first responders to gain unchecked access to disaster areas and, as a result, your property and any belongings (including documents containing personal information) left behind. Watch out for storm recovery scam red flagsWhen you're trying to rebuild your home and your life after a storm, it may be hard to turn down help that's offered—but as always, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. There are a number of red flags that you might be dealing with a scam contractor: They demand cash or prepaid debit cards or payment via peer-to-peer apps. They promise a huge discount but are vague about the final price. They pressure you to make a decision on the spot. They request payment up front. They claim to have leftover materials to offer for cheap. They refuse to provide a contract. They say you're responsible for pulling permits. They try to avoid inspections. The best way to avoid this scam is to not act out of urgency or emotion. Take the time to do your due diligence: Check the contractor's license and insurance, and request a written estimate and contract. Get several estimates for the job, even if it takes time. Don't pay the full fee until the work is finished to the contract specs. If damage is the result of a storm or weather event, do not pass go until you've contacted your homeowners insurance company. You should begin the claims process as soon as you can and document everything as thoroughly as possible. Taking any other action before making this call could compromise what your policy covers. Finally, you should take steps to secure high-value belongings and sensitive documents so they're not easily exposed in the event of a disaster, and always research organizations before you donate. Elon Musk’s DOGE team is using his Grok chatbot in federal government, raising alarms about conflict of interest
Billionaire Elon Musk’s DOGE team is expanding use of his artificial intelligence chatbot Grok in the U.S. federal government to analyze data, said three people familiar with the matter, potentially violating conflict-of-interest laws and putting at risk sensitive information on millions of Americans. Such use of Grok could reinforce concerns among privacy advocates and others that Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency team appears to be casting aside long-established protections over the handling of sensitive data as President Donald The President shakes up the U.S. bureaucracy. One of the three people familiar with the matter, who has knowledge of DOGE’s activities, said Musk’s team was using a customized version of the Grok chatbot. The apparent aim was for DOGE to sift through data more efficiently, this person said. “They ask questions, get it to prepare reports, give data analysis.” The second and third person said DOGE staff also told Department of Homeland Security officials to use it even though Grok had not been approved within the department. Reuters could not determine the specific data that had been fed into the generative AI tool or how the custom system was set up. Grok was developed by xAI, a tech operation that Musk launched in 2023 on his social media platform, X. If the data was sensitive or confidential government information, the arrangement could violate security and privacy laws, said five specialists in technology and government ethics. It could also give the Tesla and SpaceX CEO access to valuable nonpublic federal contracting data at agencies he privately does business with or be used to help train Grok, a process in which AI models analyze troves of data, the experts said. Musk could also gain an unfair competitive advantage over other AI service providers from use of Grok in the federal government, they added. Musk, the White House and xAI did not respond to requests for comment. A Homeland Security spokesperson denied DOGE had pressed DHS staff to use Grok. “DOGE hasn’t pushed any employees to use any particular tools or products,” said the spokesperson, who did not respond to further questions. “DOGE is here to find and fight waste, fraud and abuse.” Musk’s xAI, an industry newcomer compared to rivals OpenAI and Anthropic, says on its website that it may monitor Grok users for “specific business purposes.” “AI’s knowledge should be all-encompassing and as far-reaching as possible,” the website says. As part of Musk’s stated push to eliminate government waste and inefficiency, the billionaire and his DOGE team have accessed heavily safeguarded federal databases that store personal information on millions of Americans. Experts said that data is typically off limits to all but a handful of officials because of the risk that it could be sold, lost, leaked, violate the privacy of Americans or expose the country to security threats. Typically, data sharing within the federal government requires agency authorization and the involvement of government specialists to ensure compliance with privacy, confidentiality and other laws. Analyzing sensitive federal data with Grok would mark an important shift in the work of DOGE, a team of software engineers and others connected to Musk. They have overseen the firing of thousands of federal workers, seized control of sensitive data systems and sought to dismantle agencies in the name of combating alleged waste, fraud and abuse. “Given the scale of data that DOGE has amassed and given the numerous concerns of porting that data into software like Grok, this to me is about as serious a privacy threat as you get,” said Albert Fox Cahn, executive director of the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, a nonprofit that advocates for privacy. His concerns include the risk that government data will leak back to xAI, a private company, and a lack of clarity over who has access to this custom version of Grok. DOGE’s access to federal information could give Grok and xAI an edge over other potential AI contractors looking to provide government services, said Cary Coglianese, an expert on federal regulations and ethics at the University of Pennsylvania. “The company has a financial interest in insisting that their product be used by federal employees,” he said. “APPEARANCE OF SELF-DEALING” In addition to using Grok for its own analysis of government data, DOGE staff told DHS officials over the last two months to use Grok even though it had not been approved for use at the sprawling agency, said the second and third person. DHS oversees border security, immigration enforcement, cybersecurity and other sensitive national security functions. If federal employees are officially given access to Grok for such use, the federal government has to pay Musk’s organization for access, the people said. “They were pushing it to be used across the department,” said one of the people. Reuters could not independently establish if and how much the federal government would have been charged to use Grok. Reporters also couldn’t determine if DHS workers followed the directive by DOGE staff to use Grok or ignored the request. DHS, under the previous Biden administration, created policies last year allowing its staff to use specific AI platforms, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the Claude chatbot developed by Anthropic and another AI tool developed by Grammarly. DHS also created an internal DHS chatbot. The aim was to make DHS among the first federal agencies to embrace the technology and use generative AI, which can write research reports and carry out other complex tasks in response to prompts. Under the policy, staff could use the commercial bots for non-sensitive, non-confidential data, while DHS’s internal bot could be fed more sensitive data, records posted on DHS’s website show. In May, DHS officials abruptly shut down employee access to all commercial AI tools – including ChatGPT – after workers were suspected of improperly using them with sensitive data, said the second and third sources. Instead, staff can still use the internal DHS AI tool. Reuters could not determine whether this prevented DOGE from promoting Grok at DHS. DHS did not respond to questions about the matter. Musk, the world’s richest person, told investors last month that he would reduce his time with DOGE to a day or two a week starting in May. As a special government employee, he can only serve for 130 days. It’s unclear when that term ends. If he reduces his hours to part time, he could extend his term beyond May. He has said, however, that his DOGE team will continue with their work as he winds down his role at the White House. If Musk was directly involved in decisions to use Grok, it could violate a criminal conflict-of-interest statute which bars officials — including special government employees — from participating in matters that could benefit them financially, said Richard Painter, ethics counsel to former Republican President George W. Bush and a University of Minnesota professor. “This gives the appearance that DOGE is pressuring agencies to use software to enrich Musk and xAI, and not to the benefit of the American people,” said Painter. The statute is rarely prosecuted but can result in fines or jail time. If DOGE staffers were pushing Grok’s use without Musk’s involvement, for instance to ingratiate themselves with the billionaire, that would be ethically problematic but not a violation of the conflict-of-interest statute, said Painter. “We can’t prosecute it, but it would be the job of the White House to prevent it. It gives the appearance of self-dealing.” The push to use Grok coincides with a larger DOGE effort led by two staffers on Musk’s team, Kyle Schutt and Edward Coristine, to use AI in the federal bureaucracy, said two other people familiar with DOGE’s operations. Coristine, a 19-year-old who has used the online moniker “Big Balls,” is one of DOGE’s highest-profile members. Schutt and Coristine did not respond to requests for comment. DOGE staffers have attempted to gain access to DHS employee emails in recent months and ordered staff to train AI to identify communications suggesting an employee is not “loyal” to The President’s political agenda, the two sources said. Reuters could not establish whether Grok was used for such surveillance. In the last few weeks, a group of roughly a dozen workers at a Department of Defense agency were told by a supervisor that an algorithmic tool was monitoring some of their computer activity, according to two additional people briefed on the conversations. Reuters also reviewed two separate text message exchanges by people who were directly involved in the conversations. The sources asked that the specific agency not be named out of concern over potential retribution. They were not aware of what tool was being used. Using AI to identify the personal political beliefs of employees could violate civil service laws aimed at shielding career civil servants from political interference, said Coglianese, the expert on federal regulations and ethics at the University of Pennsylvania. In a statement to Reuters, the Department of Defense said the department’s DOGE team had not been involved in any network monitoring nor had DOGE been “directed” to use any AI tools, including Grok. “It’s important to note that all government computers are inherently subject to monitoring as part of the standard user agreement,” said Kingsley Wilson, a Pentagon spokesperson. The department did not respond to follow-up questions about whether any new monitoring systems had been deployed recently. (Additional reporting by Jeffrey Dastin and Alexandra Alper. Using ChatGPT’s Advanced Data Analysis feature for PPC
The world of generative AI is evolving rapidly, with breakthroughs in image and video generation, multimodal capabilities, and – crucially for marketers – data analysis. For PPC professionals, these tools offer a new level of speed and depth in uncovering insights and optimizing performance. One standout capability is ChatGPT’s Advanced Data Analysis, which allows users to upload raw data, ask natural language questions, and receive clear, actionable insights – fast. What once took hours can now happen in minutes. Advanced data analysis in ChatGPT: Access and availability Originally launched in July 2023 as a beta feature for Plus and Enterprise users, Advanced Data Analysis is now integrated directly into the core ChatGPT experience. Free users have limited access to file uploads and advanced data analysis Plus and Pro users have extended limits for deeper, faster analysis. Here’s a look at how this tool can elevate your PPC workflow. Uploading and preparing your Google Ads data To get started with ChatGPT, click the plus button to connect or upload the data source you’d like to analyze. In this example, I uploaded a .csv file that I downloaded directly from Google Ads. Exploring key insights: Conversion rates by day I started by asking which day of the week had the best conversion rates and requested a chart. ChatGPT began by scanning the file to identify where the actual data starts and what each column contains. This step alone is valuable. It means you don’t have to clean the data yourself or give detailed instructions upfront. For instance, this dataset doesn’t include a conversion rate column, so the model calculated it automatically. I didn’t specify which data points to use in that calculation. The model inferred it, just as a junior data analyst would. Once the data is normalized, ChatGPT generates a graph sorted by the day of the week with the highest conversion rate. In this case, it turned out to be Friday. From there, you can customize the chart’s colors and interact further with the data using the “Now interactive! (Beta)” button built into the chart. Dig deeper: Top AI tools and tactics you should be using in PPC Forecasting and budget recommendations I then decided to take it a step further and asked ChatGPT to forecast results through the end of the year and recommend a target spend amount. This is a common request we get as PPC marketers: How much could we spend? What would the results look like? Traditionally, answering these questions can take hours – or even days – of building and refining models. Tools like ChatGPT and Gemini can now do this in a matter of minutes. In this case, the model provided a recommended budget along with projected outcomes based on the dataset. It also offered strategic suggestions for improving performance and achieving the forecasted results. Get the newsletter search marketers rely on. Business email address Sign me up! Processing... See terms. Uncovering deeper insights with correlations Here’s another use case that I believe delivers meaningful insights quickly. In this example, I wanted to explore whether click-through rates (CTRs) and conversion rates were correlated. ChatGPT quickly generated a scatter plot and identified a negative correlation of -0.64, meaning that, in this dataset, days with higher CTRs tended to have lower conversion rates. It also provided a possible explanation for this pattern. This is particularly valuable for those of us in paid search. While we often know which levers to pull within the platform, we typically rely on a data scientist or analytics team to uncover and interpret deeper insights like this. In this case, ChatGPT handles that analysis for you – bridging the gap between execution and strategy. Dig deeper: 6 ways GPT Operator is changing PPC automation Handling complex visualizations The volume of data requests and potential analyses is virtually endless. Fortunately, you can ask follow-up questions or refine the dataset if it’s too large to interpret effectively. For example, I initially asked for a heat map broken down by campaign, but the output was overwhelming and unreadable. So, I followed up by requesting just the top 10 campaigns by spend – and received a much cleaner, more useful visualization. Letting AI suggest the next analysis Even if you’re not sure where to begin, ChatGPT can help you get started – sometimes all it takes is a simple question. In this case, I asked: “What are some other interesting insights or visual analyses that can be done with this data to help me improve performance?” The model responded with several suggestions that not only helped me dive deeper but also surfaced ideas I hadn’t considered. These AI-driven prompts can spark meaningful new directions in your analysis. Dig deeper: ChatGPT for PPC: 17 strategic prompts you can use today Pareto analysis and actionable optimization Next, I asked ChatGPT to generate a bubble chart for the top 30 campaigns and run a Pareto analysis. This analysis revealed that 20% of campaigns were responsible for 80% of conversions. That’s incredibly useful insight, especially when deciding how much to invest in tail terms versus your core performers. Both the bubble chart and Pareto breakdown provided quick takeaways and suggestions for actionable next steps based on the data. Final thoughts: Advanced data analysis in ChatGPT and beyond The real advantage here is how easily advanced data analysis becomes part of your workflow. What used to take hours or specialized support can now happen in minutes, with AI identifying patterns, correlations, and opportunities you might have missed. These insights lead to faster, more informed PPC decisions – whether it’s reallocating budget, refining targeting, or identifying underperforming campaigns. As the tools evolve and more data gets connected, analysis becomes not just easier, but proactive. This shift is giving PPC marketers a new edge: the ability to act on insights faster than the competition. This Portable Sonos Speaker Is at Its Lowest Price Ever Right Now
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. At $336 (down from its usual $449), the Sonos Move 2 is seeing its lowest price ever right now, according to price trackers. That makes it a bit easier to justify if you've been eyeing a portable Bluetooth speaker that doesn’t compromise on sound. Sonos Move 2 $336.00 at Amazon /images/amazon-prime.svg $449.00 Save $113.00 Get Deal Get Deal $336.00 at Amazon /images/amazon-prime.svg $449.00 Save $113.00 This isn’t some lightweight travel companion you toss in a beach bag. It’s nearly 6.6 pounds, built like a tank, and clearly meant to pull double duty as both an indoor speaker and an outdoor one. It looks clean, charges on a minimalist wireless base, and comes in either matte black or white. The audio setup includes dual tweeters for stereo separation and a single woofer that holds its own, especially at moderate volumes. At higher levels, the bass pulls back a bit to prevent distortion, but unless you’re constantly maxing it out, that won’t be a huge issue, notes this PCMag review. Bluetooth 5.0 is a little behind the times and won’t please audiophiles who want higher-res streaming on the go. But this speaker was clearly built with wifi use in mind—and on that front, it shines. Pair it with the Sonos app, and you get access to EQ adjustments, TruePlay room tuning, and the ability to link it to other Sonos speakers. It also supports AirPlay 2 and hands-free voice control with both Alexa and Sonos Voice. It’s not fully waterproof, but the IP56 rating means it’ll survive a heavy downpour or occasional rinsing. The battery life has been bumped up to a solid 24 hours (though that number depends on how loud you play it and how often you use voice or wifi features), and the app makes setup and everyday use easy, whether you're already in the Sonos ecosystem or not. The Move 2 is expensive, no doubt, and Bluetooth specs could be better. But if you care about full-bodied, room-filling sound, smart features, and portability that doesn’t feel like a toy, this might be the speaker to grab, especially while it’s at its best price yet. Someone Made an Actual AI Clippy
AI always reminds me of Clippy, the infamous talking paperclip added to Microsoft Office in the '90s. This little guy frustrated users, was based on a faulty understanding of how people want to use technology, and had a way of showing up even after you specifically turned it off. It was probably inevitable, then, for someone to make a tool that combines large language models and the 30-year-old animated paperclip. That someone is developer Felix Rieseberg, who built a Windows 95-themed Clippy app that can run real large language models on your computer. The application is available on Windows, Mac, and Linux devices, and works offline. Clippy looks just the way you remember and hovers over whatever you're working on. He cycles through several animations. Click on him to start chatting, the way you would with any other large language model. The application works offline, meaning you can chat with Clippy on a train or airplane if you really want to. To be clear: this is not intended to be a functional tool. Rieseberg calls it an art project he made just because it's fun. "If you get as little as a small chuckle out of it, I’m happy to hear it," says the project's "about" page. Even so, Clippy is probably the easiest tool I've come across for running large language models locally on a computer. Just download the application, install it, then choose which model you want to run in the Windows 95 themed preferences. The default, Google's Gemma, works well enough. Credit: Justin Pot This application is based on Ollama, an open source application built by Meta which makes it possible to run a variety of large language models on your own computer. Clippy offers eight different models to try out. Generally, the larger they are the more system resources they'll take to use—you can try a few different ones to get a feel for how well they work on your device. It's fun, if not entirely practical. Clippy can't access the internet, so you can't get real-time information, and the responses aren't as sophisticated as what you'd get from a top-of-the-line AI service. There are a few more things you can tweak in the settings, including the default font and whether Clippy should always be on the top. You can also write your own system prompt for Clippy, allowing you to take control of his personality. This AI-powered art project isn't going to change the world, and it's not supposed to. It's a piece of art, like this musical masterpiece Clippy inspired earlier this year. View the full article

Louisiana residents were warning their neighbors about polluted air—now the state could fine them $1M for doing it
On days of heavy pollution in Sulphur, a southwest Louisiana town surrounded by more than 16 industrial plants, Cynthia “Cindy” Robertson once flew a red flag outside her home so her community knew they faced health hazards from high levels of soot and other pollutants. But she stopped flying the flag after Louisiana passed a law last May that threatened fines of up to $1 million for sharing information about air quality that did not meet strict standards. On Thursday, Robertson’s group Micah 6:8 Mission and other Louisiana environmental organizations sued the state in federal court over the law they say restricts their free speech and undermines their ability to promote public health in heavily industrialized communities. When neighbors asked where the flags went, “I’d tell them, ‘The state of Louisiana says we can’t tell y’all that stuff,'” Robertson said. While the state has argued the law ensures that accurate data is shared with the public, environmental groups like Micah 6:8 Mission believed it was intended to censor them with “onerous restrictions” and violates their free speech rights, according to the lawsuit. Despite having received Environmental Protection Agency funding to monitor Sulphur’s pollution using high quality air monitors for several years, Michah 6:8 Mission stopped posting data on the group’s social media after the law was signed last May, Robertson said. While federal law requires publicly disclosed monitoring of major pollutants, fence-line communities in Louisiana have long sought data on their exposure to hazardous and likely carcinogenic chemicals like chloroprene and ethylene oxide, which were not subject to these same regulations. Under the Biden administration, the EPA tightened regulations for these pollutants, though the The President administration has committed to rolling them back. The Biden administration’s EPA also injected funding to support community-based air monitoring, especially in neighborhoods on the “fence-line” with industrial plants that emitted pollutants that they were not required to publicly monitor under federal law. Some groups say they lack confidence in the data the state does provide and embraced the chance to monitor the air themselves with federal funding. “These programs help detect pollution levels in areas of the country not well served by traditional and costly air monitoring systems,” the lawsuit stated. In response to the influx of grassroots air monitoring, Louisiana’s Legislature passed the Community Air Monitoring Reliability Act, or CAMRA, which requires that community groups that monitor pollutants “for the purpose of alleging violations or noncompliance” of federal law must follow EPA standards, including approved equipment that can costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. “You can’t talk about air quality unless you’re using the equipment that they want you to use,” said David Bookbinder, director of law and policy at the Environmental Integrity Project, which represents the plaintiffs. He added there was no need for community groups to purchase such expensive equipment when cheaper technology could provide “perfectly adequate results . . . to be able to tell your community, your family, whether or not the air they’re breathing is safe.” Community groups sharing information based on cheaper air monitoring equipment that did not meet these requirements could face penalties of $32,500 a day and up to $1 million for intentional violations, according to analysis from the Environmental Integrity Project. “We’re a small nonprofit, we couldn’t afford to pay one day’s worth of that,” Robertson said. “And the way the law is written, it’s so ambiguous, you don’t really know what you can and can’t do.” There is no known instance in which the state has pursued these penalties, but community groups say the law has a chilling effect on their work. “The purpose of this was very clear: to silence the science, preventing people from doing anything with it, sharing it in any form,” said Caitlion Hunter, director of research and policy for Rise St. James, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit. “I’m not sure how regulating community air monitoring programs ‘violates their constitutional rights’,” Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill countered in a written statement. Industry groups are excluded from the law’s requirements, the lawsuit notes. The law presumes “that air monitoring information lacks accuracy if disseminated by community air monitoring groups, but not by industry participants or the state,” the complaint states. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency declined to comment, citing pending litigation.
