Small business transactions in the U.S. increased by 5% in 2024, with 9,546 closed deals representing an enterprise value of $7.59 billion, 15% higher than in 2023, according to BizBuySell’s Insight Report. Despite three Federal Reserve rate cuts, the impact on the business-for-sale market remained limited, with 60% of surveyed buyers reporting no effect on their purchasing timeline. Higher-Priced Deals Drive Market Growth Business sales grew steadily throughout the year, with 10% growth in Q1, followed by 5% in Q2 and Q3, before leveling off in Q4. The median sale price increased 3% year-over-year to $345,000, while the average cash flow multiple rose from 2.49 to 2.57. Transactions also moved faster, with median days on the market dropping to 168 days. “Despite the Federal Reserve’s rate cuts, many commercial lenders have kept underwriting criteria tight, resulting in minimal pass-through savings for acquisition financing,” said BJ Delhamer, vice president at Insite Commercial Real Estate Advisors. With post-election uncertainty fading, buyers are expected to accelerate purchases. Carrie Duvall, CEO at 1st & Main Partners, reported a strong start to 2025, closing multiple deals exceeding her best annual earnings. Manufacturing, Technology, and Construction Sectors Surge Key industries drove transaction volume in 2024, with manufacturing, building and construction, and online and technology businesses seeing a combined 32% year-over-year increase in sales. Manufacturing: 15% increase in acquisitions; median sale price $700,000; cash flow multiples up 9.5% despite weaker margins. Online and Technology: 74% surge in transactions; median sale price $650,000, 24% lower than 2023, reflecting more lower-priced deals. Building and Construction: 10% growth in acquisitions; median sale price $760,000; stable valuations with small gains in cash flow. AI and cloud-based platforms have made technology businesses more scalable, while reshoring efforts continue to boost U.S. manufacturing appeal. Tariff Concerns Loom for Small Businesses The return of Trump administration tariffs raises concerns about rising costs. 48% of business owners are bracing for increased expenses, while 15% are seeking domestic suppliers to mitigate risks. One in five business owners surveyed said they would pass tariff-related costs onto consumers, potentially fueling inflationary pressures. Inflation and Rising Costs Challenge Small Businesses Despite easing inflation, 54% of business owners say costs remain high, with 78% reporting increased expenses in 2024. Key cost drivers included higher goods costs (70%), insurance (51%), and payroll (44%). Financial performance remained flat, with median revenue fluctuating throughout the year and cash flow following similar trends. The median sale price of small businesses rose just 3%, reflecting ongoing financial pressures. More Sellers Enter the Market Despite Financial Uncertainty Sellers continued to offload businesses despite weaker financials, with 38% of brokers saying the market favors buyers. Retirement remains the top reason for selling (38%), followed by pursuing other opportunities (35%) and cashing in on high business values (21%). “We are tired. It’s incredibly difficult to find good employees that will help us provide the high level of customer service that we are known for. We have managed to show significant growth year-over-year since 2019 and along with solid investments we are in a position to retire very early,” said Levi Fehrs, owner of Kodiak Furniture in Alaska. New Buyers Emerging: Corporate Refugees and Young Entrepreneurs The rise of corporate refugees—professionals leaving corporate jobs to own businesses—has fueled demand. 42% of buyers identified as former corporate employees, while 14% were recently unemployed. Young MBAs are also entering the market, driven by Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA) programs at major business schools. Service, Retail, and Restaurants Hold Steady; Private Equity Grows Service businesses: 40% of transactions, median sale price $325,000, slight growth. Retail: Flat transaction volume, median sale price $255,000, steady demand for specialty businesses. Restaurants: Flat sales volume, median sale price $225,000, 4% drop in revenue offset by higher profit margins. Private equity firms: Increasing interest, particularly in niche industries with strong cash flow. Market Outlook for 2025 With financing constraints persisting, seller financing is expected to play a larger role, with 91% of brokers citing it as critical. Interest rates remain a top concern, and 23% of brokers rank them as the biggest market challenge. “With tighter lending conditions, both buyers and sellers should be prepared to negotiate creative financing options, such as seller notes, earn-outs, or partial equity retainment. These structures can help bridge valuation gaps and signal confidence in the business’s future performance,” said Delhamer. As AI, reshoring, and entrepreneurship drive business acquisitions, buyers are focusing on stable, recession-resistant businesses (76%), while 42% analyze financial performance as their top priority. Despite challenges, demand remains steady, and savvy entrepreneurs continue to find value in the market. Ever since Apple released the new Apple Watch Series 10 earlier in September, it has been steadily dropping in price; it's currently sitting at $329 (originally $399) after a $70 drop, the lowest price yet, according to price-tracking tools. There are also some key upgrades from the Apple Watch 9, although they're less than older Apple watches. If you're curious to know how it compares to other flagship smartwatches, you can check out our head-to-head comparison post here. Some of the first things you'll notice on the Series 10 are a thinner case and a bigger OLED screen (either 1.6 inches or 1.8 inches, depending on which size you get). Unlike the Series 9, which could only take calls on the speaker, the Series 10 has audio playback, meaning you can listen to podcasts or Spotify on its speakers. The sleep features were also improved, with a notification that gets triggered by sleep apnea symptoms. There are also new depth and water temperature sensors that automatically turn on when you go underwater, a feature that used to be unique to the more premium Apple Watch Ultra series. The battery will last you anywhere between 18 and 36 hours, depending on your use. You still get the same fitness features, heart rate monitor, and sleep tracker from previous models—but still no blood oxygen sensor. View the full article

When selecting breakroom furniture, focus on durable materials such as wood, laminate, and vinyl. These options are designed to endure daily use, resist stains and scratches, and are simple to clean and maintain. Additionally, choose upholstery and finishes that are designed for commercial use, as they are typically more durable and resistant to wear and tear. How can I maximize the use of limited breakroom space while still providing comfortable seating? To make the most of a small breakroom, opt for space-saving furniture like bar-height tables and stools, which can accommodate more people in a smaller footprint. Additionally, consider using wall-mounted or foldable tables and chairs that can be easily stored when not in use. Finally, create a sense of openness by using light colors, mirrors, and minimalistic furniture designs that don’t overcrowd the room. Are there any breakroom furniture sets specifically designed for small businesses? Many furniture manufacturers offer breakroom furniture sets tailored to small businesses, which typically include a combination of tables, chairs, and storage solutions that suit smaller spaces. Look for compact, multifunctional pieces that provide the necessary features without taking up too much room. How can I ensure that the breakroom furniture I choose is easy to clean and maintain? When selecting breakroom furniture, prioritize materials and finishes that are easy to clean, such as laminate, vinyl, and stain-resistant fabrics. Additionally, choose furniture with smooth surfaces and minimal seams, which will help prevent dirt and debris from accumulating. Regular cleaning and maintenance, like wiping down surfaces and vacuuming upholstery, will help keep your breakroom furniture looking new and fresh. What are some eco-friendly breakroom furniture options? Eco-friendly breakroom furniture options consist of items crafted from sustainable materials, including reclaimed wood, bamboo, and recycled plastic. Furthermore, seek out furniture manufacturers that emphasize environmentally responsible practices, such as utilizing low-VOC (volatile organic compound) finishes and water-based adhesives. Choosing eco-friendly furniture not only benefits the environment but also demonstrates your business’s commitment to sustainability. Selecting the perfect breakroom furniture for your office is an essential step in creating a comfortable and functional environment for your employees. By considering factors like space, layout, design, and durability, you can transform your breakroom into a space where employees can relax, recharge, and collaborate. With the right furniture, your break room will become a cherished oasis within the workplace, promoting productivity and overall well-being. When you think about ChatGPT, what do you see? A box. A prompt. A lot of text. OpenAI’s flagship product is defined by typography—it’s the way users communicate their queries, and the way the model responds in kind. Typography is “the first thing people interact with when meeting AI for the first time,” says OpenAI design director Shannon Jager. [Image: OpenAI]Which is why for its first rebrand ever, OpenAI put typography squarely at the center of its new look. OpenAI’s refreshed brand includes a tweaked “blossom” logo with lines that are thicker and all the same width, a new “point” mark, and a fresh wordmark set in its new typeface OpenAI Sans. [Image: OpenAI]Designed for cohesivenessBefore the brand refresh, OpenAI’s visual identity was a collection of various fonts and marks. It was a symptom of the company’s rapid growth. In the three years since the launch of ChatGPT, “nobody really had time to work on a unified identity system,” Veit Moeller, OpenAI’s head of design, says of the company’s design team, which was three people at the time. “Sam [Altman, OpenAI’s CEO,] asked us to create one system, one identity.” [Image: OpenAI]The rebrand was completed over the course of nine months as a collaboration between OpenAI’s in-house design team, Berlin type studio Dinamo, and the Netherlands-based graphic design agency Studio Dumbar. Dinamo’s font plays off of the idea of the circular cursor ChatGPT uses when responding to queries. It’s designed with curved letterform and circular dots above the lowercase j and i. “We wanted something that was both friendly and technical,” Jager says of the font. “We’re always looking back at our mission, which is creating AI for humanity.” [Image: OpenAI]Balancing the technical and emotionalThe brand refresh comes as the company expands its product suite and makes plans for a new corporate structure for its for-profit division to become a public benefit corporation. OpenAI released its newest reasoning model last week, o3-mini, on the heels of the low-cost model from China, DeepSeek. And this week, OpenAI announced Deep Research, a tool that it promises will be able to analyze and synthesize research and spit out “a comprehensive report at the level of a research analyst.” [Image: OpenAI]It’s never been more important for OpenAI to imbue a sense of humanity into its technology, as concern around AI’s rapid acceleration continue to grow. And indeed, the rebrand attempts to do that through supplemental brand images featuring gauzy shots of sunsets, landscapes, and bird flying through the air (some of which were, unsurprisingly, generated with AI, according to Wallpaper). [Image: OpenAI]Last year, OpenAI came under fire when leaked images of the rebrand revealed an empty black circle. Many assumed it would replace the company’s oft-copied blossom logo—a sign, no doubt, of its sinister intentions. It turns out the dot was real, only instead of replacing the logo, it’s simply an element in the brand system. In a video showcasing the rebrand, a large black dot transforms into pastel dots before bursting into a array of confetti. The rebrand is both restrained and playful. Clearly, OpenAI has done is work on countering its robotic undertones without extinguishing them altogether. After years of Silicon Valley trying to convince us that they had our best interests at heart with their goofy, amorphous figures and “corporate Memphis” style, it’s refreshing to see a company embrace the honesty of a more technically minded brand. Honeywell, one of the last remaining U.S. industrial conglomerates, will split into three independent companies, following in the footsteps of manufacturing giants like General Electric and Alcoa. The company said Thursday that it will separate from its automation and aerospace technologies businesses. Including plans announced earlier to spin off its advanced materials business, Honeywell will consist of three smaller entities in hopes that they will each be more agile. “The formation of three independent, industry-leading companies builds on the powerful foundation we have created, positioning each to pursue tailored growth strategies, and unlock significant value for shareholders and customers,” Honeywell Chairman and CEO Vimal Kapur said in a statement. Honeywell had said in December that it was considering spinning off its aerospace division. The public announcement arrived about one month after Elliott Investment Management revealed a stake of more than $5 billion in the aerospace, automation and materials company. Elliott had been pushing for the Charlotte, North Carolina, company to separate its automation and aerospace businesses. The board of Honeywell International Inc. had been exploring strategic options for the company since earlier in 2024. The company, which makes everything from eye solution to barcode readers, has been seeking ways to make itself more nimble. Over the past year and a half, just after Kapur took over as CEO, Honeywell has announced plans for the advanced materials business spinoff, entered into an agreement to sell its personal protective equipment business, and made several acquisitions. The separation of the automation and aerospace technologies businesses is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026. The spinoff of the advanced materials business is anticipated to be completed by the end of this year or early next year. Like Honeywell, other U.S. conglomerates have been pressured by shareholders to simplify their structures, allowing each segment of the company to move more freely and adapt to changes in their respective markets. Iconic CEOs like Jack Welch of General Electric spent years building corporate American behemoths with the belief that with scale came power. Yet those massive companies were forced to compete with upstarts with a narrow focus and a more clearly defined set of goals. Investors also wanted a more clear view of the priorities within each division, which became more murky as the companies grew. In 2015 metals maker Alcoa said that it was splitting into two independent companies, separating its bauxite, aluminum and casting operations from its engineering, transportation and global rolled products businesses. GE announced in 2021 that it was dividing itself into three public companies focused on aviation, health care and energy. At the time, the move was viewed as a potential signal of the end of conglomerates as a whole thanks to the move toward a digital economy. Shares fell almost 3% before the market opened Thursday. —Michelle Chapman, AP Business Writer View the full article

Bluesky is very hot right now—just ask Mark Zuckerberg. Even though Bluesky has a fraction of the total Threads user count (30 million vs Threads's 320 million), Adam Mosseri, Head of Threads, is working hard at making Threads more like Bluesky. Bluesky's unique features include a non-algorithmic timeline and more sophisticated moderation tools, but one of the features that Bluesky users really like, and the one that Threads is adopting first, is the shareable custom feeds. Threads, too, has an option to create custom feeds. And now, you can share them with either a link or DM, or even by advertising them on your profile page. Creating a custom feed means freedom from Thread's algorithmic feed, which might show you content from accounts you have no interest in. You can create custom feeds from the Threads app or website. Tap and hold the For You or Following feed, then select the Create New Feed option. Next, ensure that the Public Feed option is enabled if you want your new feed to show up on your profile for others to see. Tap the Add topics or profiles button. Search for profiles and add them to the list. You can also do this for any topic or search term. When you're done, tap on Create Feed. You can add up to 150 profiles and 5 topics to a custom feed, and you can create up to 128 custom feeds overall. Credit: Khamosh Pathak Once created, your new feed will show up in your feeds bar. Here's where you can start sharing. On your Profile page, go to the Feeds tab and select a Feed. Here, tap the Share feed button. You'll see an option to DM it to Instagram or Threads users. Or, you can just copy a link to the feed to your clipboard, which you'll be able to share anywhere. Credit: Khamosh Pathak When interacting with other people's feeds, you'll have two options. You can use the Pin to Home button to add the feed to your Threads home screen, so you can browse it without following everyone included in it. Alternatively, tap the Follow Profiles button to follow all the profiles in the list. If you decide you don't like a custom feed somebody's shared with you, no worries. Like with any other feed, tap and hold the feed tab from the top and choose Remove to get rid of it. View the full article

Gucci announced on Thursday that its creative director of under two years, Sabato De Sarno, has left the position just two and a half weeks before the next runway show, and that the new collection would be created by the design team. The abrupt announcement of De Sarno’s departure comes as Gucci prepares to open Milan Fashion Week with a combined womenswear and menswear collection on February 25. His replacement will be announced “in due time,” the statement said. Gucci’s new CEO, Stefano Cantino, expressed gratitude for De Sarno’s focus on “Gucci’s craftsmanship and heritage,” while Kering deputy CEO Francesca Bellettini said he had “further strengthened Gucci’s fundamentals.” De Sarno, 42, was named creative director of the storied Italian fashion house two years ago after the surprise departure of Alessandro Michele, who powered brand sales and owner Kering’s earnings with gender-fluid, eclectic, and romantic collections that rewrote Gucci’s codes. De Sarno’s tenure was marked by a return to more essential silhouettes and wardrobe basics that sought broader public appeal—but ultimately had disappointing sales. Kering earnings have been slipping, with third quarter revenues down 15% to 3.8 billion euros as Gucci revenue plunged 26% to 1.6 billion euros. Kering announces its full-year earnings next week. Gucci’s heritage as a luggage and leather goods maker founded more than 100 years ago in Florence has given successive creative directors the potential for great leeway to interpret the brand’s codes—starting with Tom Ford’s sexy silhouettes of the 1990s. This is not the first time the Gucci has taken a dramatic late-season creative shift. The departure of Michele’s predecessor, Frida Giannini, was announced in January 2015 only as the fashion crowd arrived for the menswear runway preview. The new collection, headed by Michele as part of the Gucci team, was put together in a scant five days, and featured the then-dramatic pussy bow blouse for men as the new eclectic vision for Gucci took focus. De Sarno arrived from Valentino, where he was fashion director overseeing both men’s and women’s collections. Michele is now putting his stamp on Rome-based Valentino as creative director. The announcement comes amid a series of creative moves at major fashion houses, including the recent departure of Kim Jones as creative director of Dior’s menswear collections. —Colleen Barry, AP Fashion Writer View the full article

Dairy cattle in Nevada have been infected with a new type of bird flu that’s different from the version that has spread in U.S. herds since last year, Agriculture Department officials said Wednesday. The detection indicates that distinct forms of the virus known as Type A H5N1 have spilled over from wild birds into cattle at least twice. Experts said it raises new questions about wider spread and the difficulty of controlling infections in animals and the people who work closely with them. “I always thought one bird-to-cow transmission was a very rare event. Seems that may not be the case,” said Richard Webby, an influenza expert at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. A version of the H5N1 bird flu virus known as B3.13 was confirmed in March after being introduced to cattle in late 2023, scientists said. It has infected more than 950 herds in 16 states. The new version, known as D1.1, was confirmed in Nevada cattle on Friday, according to USDA. It was detected in milk collected as part of a surveillance program launched in December. “Now we know why it’s really important to test and continue testing,” said Angela Rasmussen, a virus expert at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, who helped identify the first spillover. The D1.1 version of the virus was the type linked to the first U.S. death tied to bird flu and a severe illness in Canada. A person in Louisiana died in January after developing severe respiratory symptoms following contact with wild and backyard birds. In British Columbia, a teen girl was hospitalized for months with a virus traced to poultry. At least 67 people in the U.S. have been infected with bird flu, mostly those who work closely with dairy or cattle, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. USDA officials said they would post genetic sequences and other information about the new form of the virus to a public repository later this week. Scientists said that would be key to understanding whether the spillover was a recent event or whether the virus has been circulating, perhaps widely, for longer. “If this turns out to have been something that crossed into cattle a couple months ago, a couple months is a long time not to detect it,” said Michael Worobey, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Arizona who has studied the H5N1 virus in cattle. He added that it’s important for federal officials to share promptly information about a virus that has the potential to trigger a pandemic that could “make COVID seem like a walk in the park.” “It’s a vital part of national security, global security, the well-being of people, of animals, and of businesses in the U.S.,” Worobey added. Google just made a move that disrupted rank tracking, potentially increasing costs and changing how search visibility is measured. In January, Google implemented a requirement for JavaScript to render search results, which significantly impacted SEO tools that rely on scraping. (You may recall there was suddenly a great deal of volatility in the SERPs that was initially attributed to another update. Still, it turned out to be a disruption in data collection that was causing the reports to be all over the place rather than the rankings fluctuating.) This change raises questions about the future of rank tracking and how SEOs can adapt. While some are ready to declare rank tracking “dead,” the reality is more complicated. So, what exactly happened now? Google “introduced” (read: “sprung upon everyone with no warning”) a requirement for JavaScript to render search results, making traditional scraping techniques significantly more difficult. Since most SEO tools need to scrape the SERPs to track keyword rankings, this new mandate means if the tools want to continue providing this service, they must now execute JavaScript, which adds complexity (and costs) and potentially reduces data accuracy. Google has framed this as an effort to: Prevent bots (which is what the tools are). “Reduce spam.” Improve security. Fair enough. However, it also benefits Google by keeping ads highly visible and making AI-driven search features, like AI Overviews, harder to bypass. This shift means that SEO tools scraping the SERPs must now navigate AI-generated content, potentially requiring them to distinguish between organic rankings and AI-driven responses (this is the added complexity part). Why this makes sense for Google Google’s decision to require JavaScript isn’t about making life harder for SEO tools. It also conveniently supports their push toward AI-driven search features in a few key ways: Rendering AI Overviews AI-generated content, such as Google’s AI Overviews, is dynamically inserted into search results. Since JavaScript is required for rendering these elements, enforcing its use ensures that all users (including scrapers) interact with AI-generated content in the same way as human users. Complicating data extraction Requiring JavaScript makes it harder for SEO tools to extract clean ranking data, especially when AI Overviews push traditional organic results further down the page. Scrapers may now have to differentiate between AI-generated responses and standard search listings, increasing complexity. Encouraging more Google dependence By making it more difficult for third-party tools to scrape SERPs, SEO professionals might find it easier to use Google’s own data sources (like Google Search Console and Google Analytics), which naturally integrate AI-powered search insights. Get the newsletter search marketers rely on. Business email address Sign me up! Processing... See terms. How bad is this going to hurt your favorite SEO tools? With Google requiring JavaScript to render search results, SEO tools that rely on scraping now face increased costs. Executing JavaScript requires more computing resources, which means tools must invest in more powerful infrastructure or develop more sophisticated methods to continue gathering data. This likely means higher overhead, and those costs may be passed down to you. Some rank tracking services may need to shift their pricing models. Others may discontinue rank tracking features entirely if they become too expensive to maintain. Some tools might find ways to work around this limitation by leveraging browser-based scraping techniques, but this could introduce latency issues and further drive up operational costs. But does this mean rank tracking is dead-dead? Before we change into our mourning attire, let’s consider what “dead” means in this context. Traditional rank tracking – the act of monitoring exact keyword positions across devices and geographies – is without a doubt becoming more difficult. But does that mean it’s completely dead? No, rank tracking isn’t all dead – more like mostly dead. But, as Miracle Max said, “mostly dead is still slightly alive.” Rank tracking can still shape SEO strategies – it can help you monitor competitor activity, spot trends, and gauge progress. But let’s be honest – most of the time, it’s a reporting metric for stakeholders. While rankings can be useful, they’ve never been the sole indicator of success. SEO has evolved beyond a keyword position arms race, and the industry needs to shift toward more meaningful ways of demonstrating results. Which brings us to… Finding new ways to prove SEO is working Lately, rank tracking has been more of a reporting tool than a core driver of SEO strategy. The industry needs to consider alternative ways of demonstrating success. Look at this shake-up as an opportunity to get smarter about measuring success. Here’s how to stay ahead. Diversify metrics Move beyond rank tracking to focus on holistic performance indicators such as organic traffic growth, conversion rates, and engagement metrics. Understand visibility Embrace tools that measure “share of voice” or visibility across broader topics rather than individual keywords. Leverage Google’s tools Take advantage of Google’s own platforms, like Search Console and Google Analytics, which provide actionable insights without the risk of disruption. Explore JavaScript-ready solutions Some tools are developing advanced JavaScript rendering capabilities to handle the new challenge. Keep an eye on these emerging solutions. Communicate with stakeholders If clients or leadership teams rely on rank reports, start conversations now about transitioning to alternative metrics. Highlight how these changes align with their broader business goals. As AI reshapes how search works, the ability to track organic rankings will continue to diminish. The user-observed SERPs already have so much personalization and localization, and they’re only going to get more fragmented. Smart SEOs will pivot early and embrace more sophisticated ways to measure and report success. Quit pronouncing everything dead SEO isn’t dead, nor is rank tracking – but clinging to outdated methods is. The game is evolving. You should, too. SEOs must rethink their reliance on old-school metrics and adapt to this more dynamic and user-centric search ecosystem. In a landscape where the only constant is change, we must be flexible and adapt to remain effective. View the full article

February is cold, wet, windy and downright inhospitable to outdoor gardening—but you know you are mere weeks from the start of spring. The irises and crocuses are beginning to emerge. Like most gardeners, this fills me with both excitement and anxiety with a capital A—am I already behind? You’re not, because February is the time to catch up. So in this, the shortest of months, you have not one, but two jobs: Wrap up all the things you’ve not yet accomplished for winter, while preparing for spring. By the time we talk next month, we’ll be deep in seeding season. Get your fruit readyWe’re at the tail end of the work that’ll determine what kind of fruit harvest you’ll have. Start by pruning any fruit trees and shrubs you haven’t gotten to yet. This includes blueberries, currants, huckleberries, winterberries, and all other berry shrubs—it is officially last call for this. Prune and train your grapes, and prune back your fall-bearing raspberries. Check with your garden center to see if it’s time to prune summer-bearing raspberries and other cane fruit. If you’re planting fruit trees or shrubs this year, the window is now open. It’s also the right time to relocate any trees or shrubs that might do better elsewhere. You can start planting rhubarb, too. Once you’re done with the structural work above, it’s time to think about fertilizing all that fruit. Your garden center can help you with fertilizer specifically for fruit trees, vines, and the special acidic fertilizer that blueberries love. I urge you to start considering strawberries. These early fruiting berries sneak up on you, and you'd be wise to spend some time considering where they'll go, what you need to do to prep the area (adding sand and compost) and what varieties you'll plant. If you’re up for the challenge, consider cloche-ing or wrapping your strawberries to encourage an early fruiting. Take care of your rosesAs with fruit, now is the time to give your roses the late winter chop. If you’ve never really paid attention before, this kind of pruning helps encourage your roses to grow strong vines with prolific blooms. Just letting them grow without any pruning or training can result in scraggly and crooked vines. Consult a guide to pruning roses, sterilize your pruning clippers, and wear arm protection. You’ll start to see roses in the garden center, and you can start getting them into the ground later in the month. All roses will benefit from fertilizer as well. Fertilize your shrubsYour plants are going to start waking up in a month or so, and giving them food is an investment that will pay off. Find slow release fertilizer and spread it around your shrubs. The rain will take care of the rest, slowly releasing nutrients to the plant so it gets precisely what it needs over the next month or two. Divide (some of) your plantsThere are a wealth of plants in your yard that benefit from occasional dividing. Dividing gives plants more space to grow, more ability to absorb nutrients, and allows roots to flourish. They're also two plants for the price of one. Now is the ideal time to dig into those herbaceous perennials and divide those suckers and relocate. To do so, dig up the entire plant, generously going around the root ball. Lift it out of the ground, and then tease apart the roots with your hands or a sharp knife. You want each division to have at least three shoots. Replant them within the day, and give them a drink of water and a little shade for a few days. Now, this isn’t for all perennials, but the fall blooming perennials. Asters, astilbe, iris, bee balm, blanket flower, bleeding heart, daylily, phlox, hosta, lambs ear, agapanthus, ornamental grasses, and sedum are some common plants you should look to divide. Resist the urge to clean upThe first week of 50-degree weather sends everyone into their yards, eager to be back outside. While you should embrace the feeling, resist cleaning up the leaves and woody stems you so graciously left in fall. This includes grasses and plants like euphorbia. The beneficial insects that are using the leaves and stems to hibernate aren’t ready to exit quite yet. You’ll want to wait until closer to summer. In the meantime, those leaves and stems are becoming useful mulch and compost. Instead, redirect your energy into tuning up your lawnmower for the spring and hunting down every slug and snail that survived winter. Prune winter blooming plantsRemember, you prune plants after they've bloomed. So while we're leaving our summer blooming plants alone for now, the winter bloomers like winter jasmine and heather can be pruned back once their blossoms drop. Even late summer and fall bloomers like clematis can be pruned back now. On the precipice of seedingWe’re still too far out for most of the U.S. to seed tomatoes, eggplants, and summer vegetables, but it is right around the corner. You can, however, get a crop of spring vegetables started, including broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, and other short crops. If you can find starts at the garden center, they can go in the ground as soon as the ground is workable. What can definitely go in the ground now are pea seeds, including sweet peas and edible pea pods. What you can seed right now is your earliest annual flowers: petunias, portulaca, sweet alyssum, and trailing nasturtiums, the flowers for hanging baskets and window baskets. You can start ginger and turmeric inside. Mostly, though, you should use this time to get your seed-starting supplies cleaned and sterilized with a mild bleach solution and ensure you have all the seeds you want for the year ahead. Google is scrapping some of its diversity hiring targets, joining a lengthening list of U.S. companies that have abandoned or scaled back their diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. The move, which was outlined in an email sent to Google employees on Wednesday, came in the wake of an executive order issued by President Donald Trump that was aimed in part at pressuring government contractors to scrap their DEI initiatives. Like several other major tech companies, Google sells some of its technology and services to the federal government, including its rapidly growing cloud division that’s a key piece of its push into artificial technology. Google’s parent company, Alphabet, also signaled the shift in its annual 10-K report it filed this week with the Securities and Exchange Commission. In it, Google removed a line included in previous annual reports saying that it’s “committed to making diversity, equity, and inclusion part of everything we do and to growing a workforce that is representative of the users we serve.” Google generates most of Alphabet’s annual revenue of $350 billion and accounts for almost all of its worldwide workforce of 183,000. “We’re committed to creating a workplace where all our employees can succeed and have equal opportunities, and over the last year we’ve been reviewing our programs designed to help us get there,” Google said in a statement to the Associated Press. “We’ve updated our 10-K language to reflect this, and as a federal contractor, our teams are also evaluating changes required following recent court decisions and executive orders on this topic.” The change in language also comes slightly more than two weeks after Google CEO Sundar Pichai and other prominent technology executives—including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg—stood behind Trump during his inauguration. Meta jettisoned its DEI program last month, shortly before the inauguration, while Amazon halted some of its DEI programs in December following Trump’s election. Many companies outside of the technology industry also have backed away from DEI. Those include Walt Disney Co., McDonald’s, Ford, Walmart, Target, Lowe’s, and John Deere. Trump’s recent executive order threatens to impose financial sanctions on federal contractors deemed to have “illegal” DEI programs. If the companies are found to be in violation, they could be subject to massive damages under the 1863 False Claims Act. That law states that contractors that make false claims to the government could be liable for three times the government’s damages. The order also directed all federal agencies to choose the targets of up to nine investigations of publicly traded companies, large nonprofits, and other institutions with DEI policies that constitute “Illegal discrimination or preference.” The challenge for companies is knowing which DEI policies the Trump administration may decide are “illegal.” Trump’s executive order seeks to “terminate all discriminatory and illegal preferences, mandates, policies, programs” and other activities of the federal government, and to compel federal agencies “to combat illegal private-sector DEI preferences, mandates, policies, programs, and activities.” In both the public and private sector, diversity initiatives have covered a range of practices, from antidiscrimination training and conducting pay equity studies to making efforts to recruit more members of minority groups and women as employees. Google, which is based in Mountain View, California, has tried to hire more people from underrepresented groups for more than a decade but stepped up those efforts in 2020 after the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis triggered an outcry for more social justice. Shortly after Floyd died, Pichai set a goal to increase the representation of underrepresented groups in the Mountain View, California, company’s largely Asian and white leadership ranks by 30% by 2025. Google has made some headway since then, but the makeup of its leadership has not changed dramatically. The representation of Black people in the company’s leadership ranks rose from 2.6% in 2020 to 5.1% last year, according to Google’s annual diversity report. For Hispanic people, the change was 3.7% to 4.3%. The share of women in leadership roles, meanwhile, increased from 26.7% in 2020 to 32.8% in 2024, according to the company’s report. The numbers aren’t much different in Google’s overall workforce, with Black employees comprising just 5.7% and Latino employees 7.5%. Two-thirds of Google’s worldwide workforce is made up of men, according to the diversity report. —— Associated Press business reporter Alexandra Olson contributed to this report. —Michael Liedtke, AP Technology Writer View the full article
